Jermain Defoe grabs the headlines, but Jamie Vardy catches the Fantasy eye as England make fairly light work of a defensive Lithuania.

Scotland and Northern Ireland also win, but there’s an injury scare for Diego Costa ahead of Spain’s friendly in France tomorrow night.

Here’s how Sunday’s action unfolded.

England 2 Lithuania 0

A regulation win for England was lifted, to a degree, by the opening goal from Jermain Defoe, the international return of the Sunderland striker described by his manager Gareth Southgate as ‘a great story’.

But the main Fantasy narrative was provided by England’s second scorer of the evening, Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

His cool finish from an Adam Lallana pass was one of a man whose form and confidence has returned – much like his club side – just in time to capitalise on a reasonable run-in and solid short-term schedule.

The Foxes face Stoke and Sunderland at home next and will have a double Gameweek to come, too. A tricky run of four consecutive away matches will take some of the shine off Leicester’s lustre, but Vardy’s three goals and two assists from his last three league starts points to a man back to his best.

Fantasy Premier League managers agree – the forward is currently the third most transferred-in player this week, behind only Man United’s Antonio Valencia and Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Indeed, Vardy is the number one striker for transfers in over the last 24 hours as the bandwagon picks up pace.

Sold by over 22,000 FPL managers since the previous deadline, Defoe’s goal, following fine work by Raheem Sterling, would have come as a relief to his 23.6% ownership who have endured his four-match drought in the league.

Sunderland remain favourites for the drop, but have an attractive set of fixtures and double Gameweek to offer plenty of potential for more returns from the Black Cats’ striker.

Second-half substitute Marcus Rashford also caught the eye, enlivening a match in which the referee’s name – Ruddy Buquet – was one of the more interesting aspects.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic serving the final segment of his three-match ban at home to West Brom on Saturday, the 4.6%-owned Rashford looks likely to lead the line for Jose Mourinho’s men.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Keane, Stones, Bertrand, Dier, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sterling (Rashford 60), Lallana, Alli, Defoe (Vardy 60).
Subs not used: Clyne, Heaton, Shaw, Gibson, Livermore, Ward-Prowse, Barkley, Lingard, Redmond, Forster.

Northern Ireland 2 Norway 0

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis was the man of the match as Northern Ireland saw off a tame Norway.

Davis set up his country’s second goal while a defence containing West Brom trio Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Chris Brunt and Watford’s Craig Cathcart held firm at the other end.

The Norwegians only threatened occasionally, with FPL’s man of the moment Josh King – seven goals and an assist from his last six Bournemouth starts – starved of service.

West Ham midfielder Havard Nordtveit also featured for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Scotland left it very late to secure a 1-0 win over Slovenia that keeps them in the race for second place in the group England currently top.

West Brom’s James Morrison shook off an ankle injury to play 82 minutes and Andrew Robertson and Robert Snodgrass were the only other Premier League starters in Gordon Strachan’s side.

Four Premier League players started the match on the bench as Germany eased to a 4-1 win in Azerbaijan.

Shkodran Mustafi and Emre Can remained there, while Mesut Ozil, who has missed Arsenal’s last two league matches, came on after 61 minutes and Man City winger Leroy Sane was given a late run-out.

Swansea keeper Lukas Fabianski and Hull City wide man Kamil Grosicki were in action as Poland won 2-1 in Montenegro.

Grosicki was replaced deep into stoppage time.

Romania and Denmark played out a goalless draw in which Kasper Schmeichel and Christian Eriksen both played the full 90 minutes for the Danes.

All the South American sides are in World Cup qualifying action tomorrow night and there are also a number of European friendlies.

Early news includes Belgium pair Thibaut Courtois (hip) and Marouane Fellaini (toe) being ruled out of their country’s trip to Russia. They will return to their clubs to be assessed ahead of the weekend fixtures.

And there was an injury scare involving Spanish striker Diego Costa, who suffered an impact injury to his leg and ankle in training ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with France.

The forward, owned by 39.7% of FPL managers, underwent an X-ray but remains with the Spanish squad, with Chelsea informed on his condition.

It remains to be seen if Costa is considered fit enough to turn out against the French tomorrow night with the injury under observation by Spain’s medical team according to reports. The Blues, of course, already have concerns over Eden Hazard, who pulled out of Belgium duties with a calf complaint earlier in the break.

Big head to head I need to win this GW, what you experts think?

    A. Coleman > Valencia (Play Capoue).

    B. Antonio > Pedro / Tadic (Play Evans/Pieters).

    C. Both A and B for -4.

    Heaton (Jaku)
    Walker Alonso *Coleman* (Pieters Evans)
Siggy J. King Mane *Antonio* (Capoue)
    Costa Aguero Lukaku

Go for Tadic I reckon - I'm going for Valencia/Toby and Mahrez myself 🙂

Sort of - very competitive ML, every point is precious atm but I have to do it because I want to get Sanchez in for 31 - hopefully earlier than others will be doing so.

Basically I have to replace those 2 guys, and I don't mind too much taking the hit in this instance cos the replacements are quality

        Carroll has Hull, tough one.

King has really tough game in my book, Sterling has no form and bad fixture and Carroll is...Carroll - on a good day can score 2 anytime.

I think I have to play King due to form and OOP, and it will be a toss up between Sterling and Carroll. 🙁

Bertrand frees up more funds , so if you have a solid 7 ( is lorente really solid? ) then walker can make his way into your team ..... if not though then that extra 0.4 mil could be the difference between an explosive returning player and an average 2 pointer . Just my opinion 🙂

The FPL flags have never waited for official news from the clubs when doubts are concerned - only, in the main, when making players available. Doubts are added when there is a volume of media stories surrounding a player suggesting a doubt on his availability. That's the way it's always been.

        1. The Tinkerman
          • 10 Years

Siggy has been withdrawn from the Iceland squad with injury but hasn't been flagged. It's far from consistent when adding and removing flags. Another recent example was Baines being flagged after being taken off at half time for Everton.. After the game Koeman went before the press and said explicitly that he was fine and would be available for the next fixture, but the flag stayed on for the rest of the week.

Basically it seems he got the all-clear for a "serious injury" but it seems Spain are still monitoring him ahead of tomorrow night - I guess to reassure Chelsea that he won't figure if there's any doubt.

The volume of reports has increased this morning and they've built enough doubt surrounding his availability for the weekend. One report says he's actually out tomorrow night but most indicate he's still in contention.

If he turns out for Spain then he won't be a doubt for the weekend and we'll know for sure tomorrow evening.

Similar to the reports on Costa then, which say there is nothing wrong with him. I guess Siggy will be flagged tomorrow when he doesn't show up for the Ireland game, but as has been suggested it's pretty inconsistent.

That broke on Twitter and one single Icelandic story. There was not a volume of reporting anywhere near what we've seen on Costa - the reports on Costa actually suggest he will be a doubt for the weekend. That was not the case on King.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What sacrifice are you about to make to gear your team up for the impending double Gameweeks.

With pricey options once again becoming desirable with double Gameweeks what sacrifices are you are about to make to ensure Sanchez is in place for Arsena's double double and Ibrahimovic for Man Utds DGWK 34?

Or are such pricey options not necessary?

I did similar in my disastrous November (three sub 30 scores in a row) Did Firmino to Lallana to free up funds for Sanchez.. Firmino scored a brace and Sanchez did hardly anything for a month.

Took me about two months to recover from that.

So while I would do similar again ...I'm wondering whether Sanchez really is worth such butchery. Not sure I can handle another month like that November again.

      Sanchez & Ibra essentials IMO.

Sanchez and Valencia already in place. I'm seriously considering going without Ibra, partly because I have too much money in my midfield lol. But I'm also not convinced those fixtures are very good for him, sticking with Lukaku that week instead may be the better option!

I'm probably wildcarding in GW35, so until then its planning for the return of Ibrah and Sanchez, and divesting my Everton/WBA assets in Defence. Ideally I want the big guns in GW31, but that means sacrificing Mane's home fixture against Bournemouth.

I think the most sought after players with SGW's are Kaku, Siggy, Mane, King. It is plausible to keep all of those 4 soI don't think there will be a massive trend to go for anyone other than you might have anyway.

Targets being Ibra, kane if fit, Sterling, Sanchez Costa, Hazard, Walker, Alonso, Gabbi, Valencia. One would probably have a mix of what they can afford out of these.

Looking like Siggy has to go for Sanchez. Sad to do it, but come 31 Swansea have tot then two away games, vs. Sanchez and the awesome run in we have (despite current form). Big sacrifice, love Siggy, but he has to go.

Additionally, might have to replace Coleman with a decidedly un-sxxy 4.3 defender in Yoshida to afford Ibra further down the line...

Brunt>Valencia this week, I'm then 0.1m short of getting Ibra back for Costa, so will have to let Coutinho go as my next move.. I will also need to get Kane back for Lukaku at some point which is a bit scary to be honest. I may well swap Coutinho for a 6.0m ish mid to give me the funds for both in due course as the FT's are starting to run out!

How sure are we Valencia is not going to be rested in april with their busy schedule? He wasn't rested until now, with that said, really hoping it's not a trap. The most obvious Coleman replacement with DGW in mind but is he really the one or am I just overthinking this?

Ah man I see, and I know the feeling of "oh sxxx better get him in" - yeah I'm watching this closely, problem is Valencia plays tomorrow night and I don't want any more enforced -4s through making early swaps (imagine if Valencia gets injured after you've brought him in!) so I'm hoping he survives at his current price next couple of days.

Think we'll be OK - all the initial Coleman sales have seen the drop, but it looks to have stabilised now - and I wouldn't doing the early move as it can all go wrong very quickly!

I'm sure you have a "maintenance" transfer (e.g. WBA def -> cheap Saints def) you can do for the long term if you're really worried about taking a hit 🙂

I agree waiting is the smartest thing to do. Will probably wait and leave it as it is. Kane is my other red flag I wanted to sort out this week, but then Coleman injury came along. Hoping for no more injuries 'cause then my team is gonna become a mess. 🙂

                This is me.

                Pickford / Foster

                Alonso - Coleman* - Olsson / Brunt - Amat

                Mané - Eriksen - Sanchez - King - Siggy

                Lukaku - Carroll - Kane*

                Could do

GW30 Coleman to Valencia this week.
                GW31 Kane - Brunt - Carroll to Ibra - Walker - Barnes for -8. or (2x -4)

Which would leave me with 0.0M ITB 🙂 I believe only Valencia will rise in price before Friday so it's doable if I get Valencia before he rises. This is the team I'd be happy with when Ibra comes back. No Che or City could hurt though.

This International break really isn't doing me any good. Tend to plan too far ahead and losing momentum. 🙂

Like I said, that's my mind process at the moment and I could easily just wait until Friday and go another route. 🙂

I think Valencia plays for Ecuador tomorrow so holding until after that game at the very least makes sense in my opinion, his price prob won't increase for another day.

Thoughts on Ibra being rested during that spell? I'd expect him to play mins in every game, but how secure are the PL mins?

Hopefully Ibra had his rest during his suspension. His minutes should be safe, I really don't think Mou has any replacement for him, so he won't go with Rashford and company to lead the line. And Ibra gets a rest when he himself decides to get it, not Mourinho. 😉

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 30

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 12noon tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 12noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

    Best option? 1FT & 5.6 ITB

    Jaku(WHU)
    Baines(liv) Brunt(mun) Yoshida(BOU)
    Alli-Erik(bur) Siggy(MID) King(sou)
    Lukaku(liv) Carroll(hul) Llorente(MID)

    Grant Coutinho Coleman! Chambers!

    A) Brunt & Coleman ➡ Walker & Valencia (-4)
    B) Wildcard
    C) Any other?

    Appreciate your thoughts!

My team is in decline and my ML opponent is getting within close range (especially Sanchez & King hurting me)... What to do? Wildcard time?

    Valdes Jaku
    Alonso Walker Mori Byram Pieters

    For -4
    Out:
    A. Llorente
    B. Carroll
    In:
    1. Costa
    2. Vardy
    3. Kun

    ...or save ?

      I'd keep A over B.
Vardy for short term, then Costa for long (cheaper)

What a choke I meant I'd keep Carroll over Llorente easily

I'd be keeping Llorente & Carroll for this GW, then ship after depending how they get on.
Vardy may have a tough game with Stoke.

Stuck between playing 3-5-2 and 3-4-3
Mids: Firminio, Coutinho, Siggy, Sane, Alli
    Attackers: Lukaku, Carroll, Llorente

What you reckon? Who gets benched? Or perhaps transferred out?

Currently got Llorente benched with a 3-5-2

I'd stick with that formation for sure. I'd Maybe swap Firm/Cout for Pedro/Willian/Mata, but that's just me

Planning to offload one of the LIV mids for a more budget friendly option shortly to enable bringing in Sanchez at some point

He has been poor of late, yes lots of attempts but how many on target?
I'd be looking to ship him soon as possible.

I think Siggy is enough Swans coverage. Plus you never know how Everton's defence is going to cope without Coleman, they always bend over for Liverpool as it is

Fabio just as nailed as Gibson, any reason to choose Gibson? Goal threat? Gibson has played 90 minutes every game so might be worth paying extra?

Gibson is nailed. Chambers, Ayala and Friend all on their way back from injuries, which might conflict with Fabio's playing time.

If i take coleman out i have £6m for a def

    Alonso - Valencia - X - (Fernandez - Chambers)

    I'm thinking:

    A - Mustafi
    B - Vertonghen
    C - Bertrand

It would be for a -4, I don't want to lost anymore value by keeping

I'm not making the Coleman switch until Friday, I can't see him dropping any more from now until then, and there may be more pressing moves I need to make by then.
Your def is looking strong as it is so I wouldn't be spending another 6m.
Vertonhen probably best out of those.

Out of those B, Spurs comfortably have the easiest fixtures/best defence

With Coleman and Antonio injured, should I consider wildcarding this week? I had been planning to wait and wildcard in 35 or 36, but I'd probably change about 9 or 10 players in my current team now.

    Heaton, Pickford
    Alonso, Coleman, Baines, McAuley, Amat
    Mané, Coutinho, Alli, Antonio, Carroll
    Aguero, Lukaku, Llorente

Wouldn't say your team warrants a WC, I'd save it.

Just take a -4 this week and change two priorities.
Coleman & Antonio > Valencia & Sanchez/Eriksen/ punt on Mata

Next GW > Carroll & Aguero > Ibra & Siggy

You'll be back on track then
