Tough fixtures for many of the usual front runners in Gameweek 30 meant our last Captain Poll saw no player emerge as a stand-out option.

It should be a different story this time around.

Arsenal host a West Ham side they destroyed 5-1 in the reverse fixture, while Manchester United welcome back top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4) for their home tie with Everton.

The big Swede has been sorely missed over a three-match suspension – Jose Mourinho’s charges have scored just once in the league, away to Middlesbrough in Gameweek 29.

Having been involved in half of all the Red Devils’ league goals, the 26.1%-owned veteran looks a strong front-runner against a Toffees side that has shipped seven goals and failed to win in their last four road trips.

Gunners’ top scorer Alexis Sanchez (11.6) is another set to compete for top spot after scoring three times and assisting another goal in that West Ham rout earlier in the season. Over the last 10 Gameweeks, the 26.9%-owned Chilean has delivered attacking returns on eight occasions.

The Hammers come into this encounter in woeful defensive form, having shipped 13 goals and failed to earn a clean sheet in their last six.

But handing Sanchez the armband comes with a slight caveat – he might once again be handed a role on the left flank, where he mustered just one off-target goal attempt at home to Manchester City yesterday.

Liverpool could offer a source of top performers in our latest poll, as Jurgen Klopp’s troops welcome a Bournemouth side that has conceded 31 times on the road.

With Sadio Mane expected to miss out after picking up an injury in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, that game’s star turn, Philippe Coutinho (8.3), will likely attract considerable interest. The Brazilian has already gathered more than 84,000 new FPL owners, after a goal, assist and maximum bonus points return at the weekend.

In Mane’s absence, Divock Origi (6.1) could earn a start. Given the 3.3% owned Belgian has scored or assisted in three of his last four appearances, all off the bench, he may be a shrewd option for those looking to take a risk with the armband.

Roberto Firmino (8.5) should also garner votes, having delivered attacking returns in four of his last five league starts, including a double-digit haul at home to Arsenal in Gameweek 27.

The favourable home matches for form sides continue at the King Power Stadium, where Leicester City take on Sunderland. Jamie Vardy’s (10.0) four goals in as many fixtures since Craig Shakespeare took charge puts the 14.6% striker among the likely poll favourites. This recent record is set to put team-mate Riyad Mahrez (9.0) in the shade, even though the Algerian has scored twice under the new regime.

Among those with an away fixture that could attract attention are Spurs’ trio of attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen (8.7), Dele Alli (9.0) and Heung-Min Son (7.0). They’ll be at the Liberty Stadium, where Swansea City have shipped 30 goals – more than any other side at home.

Of this selection, the 30.2%-owned Alli looks to be the favourite, having delivered attacking returns in all four of his last league starts.

Crystal Palace’s visit to Southampton on Wednesday night offers a pair of intriguing differential candidates for the armband in Christian Benteke (7.0) and Wilfried Zaha (5.7).

The pair registered a goal and assist each away to Chelsea and have proved particularly effective away from home, scoring 13 times between them on their travels, compared to just three goals in total at home.

The Saints somehow kept a clean sheet against Bournemouth at St Mary’s at the weekend, but over their last six matches they have generally been in poor defensive form, giving away 10 goals.

With Chelsea hosting Manchester City, interest in Diego Costa (10.7), Eden Hazard (10.2) and Sergio Aguero (12.7) is set to be limited, although with both sides conceding twice in Gameweek 30 this could be a good fixture to back a premium attacker.

The Blues’ 37.4%-owned Spain forward has had more close range efforts than any other player over his last six matches, with City’s 21.8%-owned talisman notching the second highest tally over the same period.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We’ll be back to check in on the progress of the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 31 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

So this is me guys. Anything worth a -4? Could get Ibra / Vardy / Kun (thinking about next game also vs Hull) as I still own Kane, but that would mean benching one of King - Carroll - Siggy which could hurt. Am I stuck with this team and keep Kane as he's coming back soon or should I pull the trigger and get one of the Ibra, Vardy, Kun?

    Foster
    Alonso - Davies - Brunt
    Sanchez - Eriksen - Siggy - Coutinho - King
    Lukaku - Carroll

    Thanks all. Appreciate the feedback.

      I like it!
Wouldn't worry too much about benching the ones you mention. I don't see that many points from those three..

Vardy tempting agree, who out of Siggy, King, Carroll would you bench then? Siggy, King on pens and Carroll vs leaky ARS defense.

        Cheers mate.

    Alexis for me.

However, a friend of mine mentioned this trial that he's supposed to have in Chile, regarding some speeding he did last month? What's the story there, will he be travelling soon? Could that affect his minutes for Arsenal?

Not bad. I'd sacrifice Vardy and play 3-5-2 personally. Try to get Vertonghen instead of Bavies as it's currently just a transfer waiting to happen. It would also be nice to upgrade Coutinho to Eriksen 😀

Lawro - you really going to WC? Thought you had a decent team IMO. West Brom have clean sheet chances - possibly only missing Spurs but can do that for GW32?

West Brom isn't just the issue, it's the distribution of funds. Would take me forever to switch to the team I want 😉

So, we are trying to convince each other that my choice is better than yours. Nice :D. Actually, Vardy I chose just to get cash if he rose .2, I'm half way there but on second thought his fixture this week is tempting to hold on to him. I plan to go to Gabi when he returns and possibly upgrade Zaha/Cout/Alli depending on form to Hazard or Eriksen. Your advice on 3-5-2 is also sound. So much to think before the deadline tomorrow then!

Smooth: Coutinho getting some return, finally...

      Another Daniels clean sheet.

Vardy (c) and Bertrand in for Aguero and Coleman worked out. Now have enough to get Sanchez no hit for GWK 31.

Cash mini league gaps closing especially as none owned Vardy and most captained Costa or Lukaku. 🙂

No Gabbiadini was expected, but I also expected Albrighton to come in.. And then suddenly neither Deeney nor Walker started so I ended up fielding 10 players, and finishing with a gw rank of over 1M.

Luckily my two last defenders Mawson and Yoshida, both got clean sheets. So even with the low gameweek rank, I still managed a tiny green arrow! Up to 68k now, still chasing that top 10k finish, but I'm slowly running out of gameweeks...

      Got a healthy 64, helped by my 2FT moves of Coleman & F.Mori > Valencia & BDavies

Returns from Coutinho, Grosicki, Aguero were satisfying. Late armband change from Aguero to Siggy not so.

I started Alonso and Costa, whilst Pennington was on the bench as my 3rd sub.

Rough: Coutinho (opted to just play Mane, and Carroll) and Robertson on bench.

Rough: Brought in Mahrez (and captained) instead of going with the crowd and bringing in Vardy. Praying he justifies my selection on Wednesday against Moyes Rejects FC (aka Sunderland)

Smooth: Robertson 10 pointer off the bench for Walker

Smooth: Really didn't have any idea who to (C), as any of my players could score well. Turns out they almost all did: Pickford, Valencia, Davies, Holebas, Sane, Mane, Alli, Aguero all getting me points.

Rough: Still managed to put the (C) on one of those missing out, Alonso. Robertsons 10 Points staring at me from the bench.

Really happy with Sane, kept him since gw27 and he is in great form. Very excited about double City attack after the fixture swing in 32.

Rough: changed my captain from Aguero to Sanchez 10 mins before deadline, highest scoring player was 1st sub Robertson, also had Brunt on bench, Mane injury.

Smooth: Costa blank, a small green arrow and saved my transfer.

Smooth - Cout, Mane - C (inj/rough), Sane, Kun (Llorente - out with inj, first on bench - Britos! 🙂 !)

Rough - Tadic in (post, chances, attempted assists) - Grosicki on bench; Heaton in - Foster on bench, Costa - doing nothing

Sold McAuley (8), Coutinho (13) and Rondon (1) at a cost of -4 for Valencia (8), Milner (2) and Deeney (0).
Even my Aguero captain had a sting in the tail.

      Smooth - nix.

Smooth: 60pts. Robertson (starter), Davies, Coutinho,Carroll

rough: Costa (c), Lukaku, Bench 20pts (Foster, Brunt, Grosicki)
To be fair Grosicki was a half rough as it was between him and A. Carroll starting.
So many people getting "lucky" West Brom pts off their bench!!!!!! Ranking took a bit of a pounding when autosubs were done.

Rough: Had to pick one of Llorente and Carroll to sell. I picked Carroll of course.
Smooth: it was for Captain Vardy; second highest points scorer for my team behind my other transfer in - Valencia. A hit well spent in the end, only 49 total but a green arrow and into top 400k for the first time this season (I'll take the victories where I can!)

Smooth: Coutinho finally coming good, Getting in Valencia for Coleman and getting Daniels auto sub when Kyle Walker was rested. Pickford over Heaton.
Rough: Costa and Alonso 1 point each, Sanchez(c) and Lukaku blank. T. Carroll auto sub for Llorente with McAuley 8 points left on the bench. Also my opponent in FFS Members Cup wildcarded so out already. Maybe if Charlie Daniels had taken the penalty at Southampton would have been different.

Rough: A Valdes super save effectively keeping out a 19 point goal I'd estimate from Siggy (c), Carroll assist. Would have won me my monthly ML tenner.

Smooth: Somehow dug out 48 points from injury hit side for my 14th green arrow out of last 15. Up to 4k odd.

      Rough :

      Smooth :
      - I had a nice 10 points off the bench from Robertson due to Walker not starting

Smooth: Coleman to Valencia. Keeping Coutinho and Aguero despite suggestions to ditch, and Ranocchia coming from the bench instead of Walker with 11 points. Total of 73 points with no hits.

Got in Bailly, Vertonghen and Vardy for a net gain of 14 points (21 with captaincy). Got the keeper right again and a resultant green arrow.

Benched Ranocchia and missed his 11 points and what's worse is I had him at 2nd position with Pieters coming on for a 1. Eriksen assist being taken away.

      Proper mixed bag.

Brought in Vardy and Fuchs (for Coleman and Barnes) to captain the revitalised forward. Thought I captained Vardy as soon as I brought him.
Checked my team twice before deadline and saw blue shirted forward as captain.

Only when I happened to check my team during Liverpool game Lukaku 2 points stood out. Surely an FPL mistake I thought.
      No it was my error...

That error cost me 5 points.

Would have won my Members cup tie by 1 point and qualified for Jarvish Frequent Poster. Just scraped through 2 points clear in TM's LMS.

Although when I say that McAuley (8) and Groscki (7) off the bench for Walker and Llorente perhaps will dampen any sympathy.

      *He even captained Alonso!

Rough:- Continued annoyance at invisible injuries to players that effect both himself and another team member (Llorente/Siggy (c), Mane/Firmino). Continued annoyance part two of absolutely shocking bonus results. My 11 scored 3 goals, 3 assisted and 2 clean sheets. 1,1,2 total. Gap closed to top2 in mini league but still 29 behind.

Smooth:- Moaning over, 58m points, into top 50k from 1mill in gw18. Coleman to Valencia and Lukaku to Vardy worked nicely and now have the cash for Alexis return .

      All smooth!

WC team got 70 points and green arrow into top 2k OR.

Took risks by dumping Alonso Siggy Lukaku and ignored Costa.

Full set of CS from DDG Valencia Yoshida Vertonghen. Even got a Fabio CS off the bench for Llorente.

Vardy captain. Mane and Hazard contributed. I had Zlatan on the bench too ready to be unleashed on Everton dodgy defence.

      1) Is Vardy on one of his consecutive goalscoring runs like last season?

      2) Valdes or Hennessey?

      3) If it was any other defender, would Alonso be gone by now?

      4) Will we be rewarded for showing patience or ruthlessness towards the likes of Sigurdsson, Costa and Lukaku?

      5) By switching between players who have 9 or 10 games left, is there a shrewd way to plan our transfers so we get lots of extra games out of our players?

      6) How many GW34 players are you getting ... And who are you sacrificing in your team to get them?

      7) How many players with just 8 games left do you own?

      8) Is it wise to get Manchester united players for the doubles if Mourinho prioritises the Europa League?

Mourinho has helped us out for this question. If we win the next 2 then assets are good for DGW 34. If we don't then they aren't:

          I'll third this.

At what point is a point hit appropriate or not.

          For eg bought in:
          Ibra for Aguero
          Sanchez for Mané
          And to afford those two:
          Baines to Holgate.

Is that / was that wise as a long term investment??

Wildcard timing is now critical. Is it late enough to be able to cover the remaining fixtures AND possible DGWs/blanks between now and the end of the season or do you still think a dedicated WC to BB is the best option as long as teams don't need major surgery?

I could easily use it to reshape my team for the fixtures to come, but I don't have any pressing issues which couldn't be fixed with a hit or two. I think a lot of people are in my situation.

      1) Is it Origi time?

      2) Is Sanchez really essential? He has to break down Boro and Palace defences single-handedly in the next 4. If anyone wants him for his double, there's always the option to bring him in later and choose from the wealth of (potentially) better value options at the moment.

      3) Is Ibra really essential? I just don't see him scoring enough to justify the price tag. Is he really a TC option? I might be tempted to TC a SGW player instead (If not Sanchez either). Should we make space for Ibra and Kun or choose one? Isn't Kun a better choice? Kane is rumoured to be coming back in GW32 or soon after as well. Do we need both? All 3? Or is Kane our man?

(Planning to get Origi. Planning to get Kane. Not planning to get Ibra atm)

I was thinking of a different series, sorry. Similar to Thin Blue Line? Difficult, but these are good:

Blackadder, Extras, The Thick of It, The Office, Green Wing, Peep Show, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, Nathan Barley, The Mighty Boosh, Cuckoo (Series 2+)

I'd like to hear you discussing Crystal Palace.

Four wins in a row now, with the latest against the mighty Chelsea. I think many were initially planning on ignoring them for the DGW34, but they now suddenly seem like must-haves. Who are the usual suspects? PVA, Zaha and Benteke?

Will any of you be looking further than Sanchez for Arsenal's doubles? With the thinking that Arsenal's 2nd double will drop in 35 is there anyone that tickles your pickle in the Arsenal ranks bar Alexis? Walcott? Welbeck? Mustafi?

Is it time to get rid of Siggy?

No DGW & fixtures are turning Spurs at home then 2 away games.
Yes he's very consistent but double digit hauls are rare. So many other players in that price bracket with double could outscore him eg. Sane, Zaha, Pedro, Coutinho, Firmino

With many FPL managers playing 3-5-2, does Mane's injury give us an ideal route back to 3-4-3, to take advantage of Ibra, Gabbiadini, and in the medium term, Kane returning?

I for example have transferred Mane out for Zaha, to leave money in the bank to potentially switch back to 3-4-3, and also with the bonus of getting in a DGW 34 player.

Alonso- could be worth having for last 3 weeks and keeping if can ride it out for GW31-34 , fixtures are Mid, WBA, MID , Sun and 3 at home as well, inc double GW poss in that period, could depend on if Chelsea have league sown up etc

How's the planning going for the DGW34?

Have you considered captaincy yet for that game week? In other words is Ibrahimovic the only option so is needed?

Jonty - as mentioned over the weekend. Is Zaha in this week a decent option? Cheap, in good form, playing for a team still needing wins, plus surprisingly better away stats than home, plus a DGW on the way!

Is it worth ditching Leicester assets after tomorrow night? The Everton game being moved to Sunday means they'll have to take it easy ahead of Atletico... then Palace away three days before the second leg. They should be safe with a win tomorrow, so I think they'll clock out for the next few Prem games.

What's the latest thinking on wildcard timing? Planning for that underpins everything else really. Any hits being taken now need more justification if you still have wc to play.

On the other hand, I'm much happier to take shorter term punts (B Davies whilst Rose is out, considering bringing Origi in even if Mane only out for a couple of games) than I usually would be as I have the insurance of deploying wildcard if major surgery needed.

I cannot decide between Alexis, Vardy and Zlatan!

Currently Alexis (C) and Vardy (VC)

Best WC... 4-4-3 OR 4-5-2. Any other help would be also be great. Thank you 🙂

          4-5-2:

Walker • Valencia • Alonso (Stones • Yoshida)
          Sanchez • Alli • Eriksen • Sane • Zaha
          Ibrahimovic • Lukaku (Barnes)

          4-4-3

          Valdes (Pick)
Walker • Valencia • Bertrand (Stones • Yoshida)
          Sanchez • Alli • Eriksen • Sane • DeRoon
          Ibrahimovic • Lukaku • Gabbiadini

Tough call... it feels wrong to WC and then end up playing 4-4-2 the first week with option B 😀

yeah but Gabbi has 2 double GWs to play. I may put origi in as a placehold for midweek 🙂

          Foster
          Valencia - Lovren - Baines - Pieters
          Siggy - Mane - Alli
          Aguero - Lukaku - Llorente

Jaku - Lallana - Tom Davies - Stones

          1FT 0ITB

I don't normally take hits but thinking Baines to Yoshida, Lallana to Zaha and Mane to Sanchez for -8

Leaves me with enough to get Gabby in for Llorente next week if he's fit. Advice please!

          A) Tekkers & De Roon
          B) Sane & Barnes

          On a WC.

Questionable. You better hope he delivers this week, because I like Carroll more in GW32 and GW33.
