Tough fixtures for many of the usual front runners in Gameweek 30 meant our last Captain Poll saw no player emerge as a stand-out option.

It should be a different story this time around.

Arsenal host a West Ham side they destroyed 5-1 in the reverse fixture, while Manchester United welcome back top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.4) for their home tie with Everton.

The big Swede has been sorely missed over a three-match suspension – Jose Mourinho’s charges have scored just once in the league, away to Middlesbrough in Gameweek 29.

Having been involved in half of all the Red Devils’ league goals, the 26.1%-owned veteran looks a strong front-runner against a Toffees side that has shipped seven goals and failed to win in their last four road trips.

Gunners’ top scorer Alexis Sanchez (11.6) is another set to compete for top spot after scoring three times and assisting another goal in that West Ham rout earlier in the season. Over the last 10 Gameweeks, the 26.9%-owned Chilean has delivered attacking returns on eight occasions.

The Hammers come into this encounter in woeful defensive form, having shipped 13 goals and failed to earn a clean sheet in their last six.

But handing Sanchez the armband comes with a slight caveat – he might once again be handed a role on the left flank, where he mustered just one off-target goal attempt at home to Manchester City yesterday.

Liverpool could offer a source of top performers in our latest poll, as Jurgen Klopp’s troops welcome a Bournemouth side that has conceded 31 times on the road.

With Sadio Mane expected to miss out after picking up an injury in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, that game’s star turn, Philippe Coutinho (8.3), will likely attract considerable interest. The Brazilian has already gathered more than 84,000 new FPL owners, after a goal, assist and maximum bonus points return at the weekend.

In Mane’s absence, Divock Origi (6.1) could earn a start. Given the 3.3% owned Belgian has scored or assisted in three of his last four appearances, all off the bench, he may be a shrewd option for those looking to take a risk with the armband.

Roberto Firmino (8.5) should also garner votes, having delivered attacking returns in four of his last five league starts, including a double-digit haul at home to Arsenal in Gameweek 27.

The favourable home matches for form sides continue at the King Power Stadium, where Leicester City take on Sunderland. Jamie Vardy’s (10.0) four goals in as many fixtures since Craig Shakespeare took charge puts the 14.6% striker among the likely poll favourites. This recent record is set to put team-mate Riyad Mahrez (9.0) in the shade, even though the Algerian has scored twice under the new regime.

Among those with an away fixture that could attract attention are Spurs’ trio of attacking midfielders Christian Eriksen (8.7), Dele Alli (9.0) and Heung-Min Son (7.0). They’ll be at the Liberty Stadium, where Swansea City have shipped 30 goals – more than any other side at home.

Of this selection, the 30.2%-owned Alli looks to be the favourite, having delivered attacking returns in all four of his last league starts.

Crystal Palace’s visit to Southampton on Wednesday night offers a pair of intriguing differential candidates for the armband in Christian Benteke (7.0) and Wilfried Zaha (5.7).

The pair registered a goal and assist each away to Chelsea and have proved particularly effective away from home, scoring 13 times between them on their travels, compared to just three goals in total at home.

The Saints somehow kept a clean sheet against Bournemouth at St Mary’s at the weekend, but over their last six matches they have generally been in poor defensive form, giving away 10 goals.

With Chelsea hosting Manchester City, interest in Diego Costa (10.7), Eden Hazard (10.2) and Sergio Aguero (12.7) is set to be limited, although with both sides conceding twice in Gameweek 30 this could be a good fixture to back a premium attacker.

The Blues’ 37.4%-owned Spain forward has had more close range efforts than any other player over his last six matches, with City’s 21.8%-owned talisman notching the second highest tally over the same period.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

We’ll be back to check in on the progress of the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 31 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

So who to join Llorente and Baines on the bench?
    A. King.
    B. Siggy.
    C. Holebas
    D. Alonso.
    E. Zaha.

Also have Kun, Kaku on poor fixtures - but undropable really. Also wbrom keeper and McAuley playing.

I'd love to not get him - don't much fancy those fixtures - but there's always a chance he'll bag a few and his effective ownership will be cripplingly high.

Would you wildcard this team? Simple yes or no 😀

    Heaton / Pickford
    Alonso / Cedric / Mawson / McAuley / Brunt
    Sanchez / Coutinho / Sigurdsson / King / Carroll
    Aguero / Costa / Lukaku

It looks a little crazy when I write it down but I've got no Spurs or United, the defence looks crap and the distribution of my funds makes it difficult to change things... I could get this:

    Valdes / Pickford
    Alonso / Valencia / Vertonghen / Yoshida / Holgate
    Sanchez / Alli / Eriksen / Sigurdsson / Sane
    Ibrahimovic / Lukaku / Barnes

Sometimes you have to be aggressive...

That's the way I'm leaning too... I mean that WC team is awesome imo. Ticks all of the boxes. I reckon Sane can match Aguero and then the difference in the front 7 is Costa, Coutinho and King vs Ibrahimovic, Eriksen and Alli! The defence is objectively superior too...

    Few things

Heaton vs Jaku - Stoke are dangerous, Boro not really, so playing Jaku makes sense, but Heaton save points and potential bonus means I think he has a higher cieling. What do we think? Currently Jaku..

Baines - Keeping faith, prob on Pens (have Lukaku also), can always get an assist, great fixtures after this. Just worried about CS with the youngsters playing but Schneiderlin return will help them defensively.

Finally, No Liv players at home to Bournemouth, and Coutinho has 'that' feel again. Worth a hit anywhere?

    San(c)hez Sane Siggy Alli King
    Aguero Lukaku

    Cheers

I never rotate Heaton, he can have a 10 pointer at any time. I'm starting Maguire though as my third defender this week.

I have Firmino and Coutinho still from the blank gameweek. Going to captain Coutinho this week I think.

      Going for Heaton this week

I though MID looked dangerous at times against SWA ... and Hull aren't really getting clear sheets

LEI was expected to get a clean sheet over the weekend, and did, because of Stoke's away form ... so I think the same applies away to BUR

Definitely not Zaha. Probably Lukaku, seems to still struggle in bigger games.

Although I wonder if that Palace result will prompt a back-to-basics, tight defensive approach from Chelsea? They really won't want to lose to City, and a draw suits them pretty well. Also if memory serves Kaku has scored a few V Utd.

Anyone considering foregoing Zlatan altogether, or at least not planning to get him unless form dictates?

Arguments for: 2xDGWs, fulcrum of Utd attack, high ownership.

Arguments against: Basically just fixtures, and I'm not yet sure I don't want him, I just don't know when I would want him.

Next two could well be very profitable, EVE and sun, but then it's CHE, bur and city. I would much rather have Kane (if fit) for BOU and CPL and Kaku for BUR and whm.

Then he's got SWA, fantastic, I'd captain him, but that's followed up by Arsenal Spurs and Southampton away while Chelsea, Spurs, Leicester and Everton all have arguably much easier ends to their seasons.

All this being said, he'll probably pummel Everton and I'll be scrambling to get him immediately. Anyone else got Ibra-uncertainty, or any thoughts on those fixtures?

I am not sure either, though I will have him for DGW34 if Man U is still fighting for a top 4 spot. If they lose one of the next matches, I may forego him completely, re Mourinhos comments in the Guardian.

I just don't think I could go without. Such high ownership and he can score against anyone.

Yeah, he's the definition of essential when in form. You got him for midweek?

No just can't justify a hit to take out Agüero for him.

Presumably keeping Aguero home to Hull as well? I think that's the issue I'm going to face every time I want him (up until the point where his form demands I get him, which could well be V Eve), for every given period I see players I'd rather get, or at least wouldn't sell.

I think he should now play all of United's remaining games as he has effectively had a mid-season break with his suspension and the international break meaning come the Everton game it will be nearly 3 weeks since his last game. He's in for me... but reluctantly for Vardy as I think they will rotate ahead of UCL.

Could well rotate for UCL, but surely in the Everton game 3 days before Atletico. Over a week between Sunderland and UCL?

    Llorente to Negredo or Origi?

    1. Dr. Mantis Toboggan

Carroll for me. Origi of those two. Gabbi eventually.

Origi or Negredo just gives me enough money to do Costa and Siggy -> Ibra and Alli next GW

hard to rule out Carroll anyway without seeing what else could be done to accomplish next week's desired transfers. Big Andy's potential returns the next 3 GW's seem far greater to me than either Negredo or Origi.

My bad, didn't realise Carroll was more expensive.

Ballsy move for gw32, looks good based on form and long-term but Costa and Siggy have great fixtures that week.

prefer Andy Carroll over those 2, by far.

Alright, I would really appreciate some advice here boys.

    Jaku (Pickford)
    Alonso-McAuley-Holebas (Ake, Fernandez)
    Sigurdsson-Hazard-Sanchez-Alli (Fletcher)
    Llorente-Defoe-Lukaku

Since Llorente and Defoe are out this week and Hazard's fixtures are mixed, I was thinking I could make this transfer:
Hazard, Defoe -> Coutinho, Vardy for -4pts
Majority of my players would be set with good upcoming fixtures for a while and I can wait for Llorente to heal up. The only issue I have with this move is that I have Defoe signed for 7.5 when he's currently 7.8
Another idea was moving Llorente for Origi, but that seems like a slippery road to go down.

    Thanks.

Kaku (Man U) or Aguero (Chelsea) - 1 week in isolation>? Surely Aguero...

      Third option: Ibra (Eve)

Oh well in that case definitely Ibra.

      Aguero, tentatively.
I made the point above that a draw would suit Chelsea perfectly and they might be shocked back to basics by that Palace result. They've been leaking goals and getting away with of late, but I don't think they'll allow it to continue and threaten the safety of their lead.
Still though, when it comes to big games, Aguero over Lukaku.
