The tempting offer of six fixtures over the final four Gameweeks means Southampton’s budget-friendly regulars are among the main beneficiaries of our latest Watchlist refresh.

The impending Double Gameweek 37 also plays a part as we start to fine-tune our plans for the second Wildcards over the run-in.

Southampton’s pair of Double Gameweeks 36 and 37 elevate both Fraser Forster and Maya Yoshida to the top of the keeper and defender standings respectively.

At 4.4 to Forster’s 5.0, Yoshida – who has a goal, two clean sheets and seven bonus points in his last four outings – offers potential at both ends of the pitch, which should come in handy bearing in mind that the Saints take on Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United (as well as Middlesbrough) across their two doubles.

Between the posts, Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford faces Bournemouth, Hull City and Swansea City (as the first of his Double Gameweek 37) in the next three rounds of fixtures.

Coming in at a mere 4.1, he’s chalked up 11 save points in seven appearances since returning from injury and is sure to be kept busy regardless of whether his side concede. Pickford looks tailor-made as a Bench Boost option in Double Gameweek 37 for those eyeing up Forster as their first choice option.

Similar to Southampton, six matches in the remaining four Gameweeks helps Arsenal duo Petr Cech and Laurent Koscielny move up our ladder, though a single clean sheet in six is a worry.

Nacho Monreal could also profit in his new stint as a wing-back – as evidenced by his goal against Man City at Wembley – yet Arsene Wenger’s switch to a three-man defence could also promote Gabriel as a cheaper option at just 4.8. We continue to monitor both.

Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso and Leicester City’s Robert Huth both have five matches in the remaining four Gameweeks and boast a considerable goal threat.

From Gameweek 36 in particular, Alonso’s schedule (MID, wba & WAT, SUN) looks very encouraging for returns, as he looks to strengthen his grip as the top-scoring defender in FPL.

Huth, meanwhile, has delivered two goals, an assist and a pair of clean sheets in his last six. Owned by just 2%, he could be an effective differential with home encounters against Watford and Bournemouth on either side of a Double Gameweek 37.

Since Craig Shakespeare took the helm in Gameweek 26, the Foxes’ centre-half leads all defenders for attempts, efforts in the area and shots on target.

West Brom’s six-goal man Gareth McAuley also returns in our latest update, ahead of clashes with Leicester, Burnley and Swansea, in addition to a Double Gameweek 37.

Manolo Gabbiadini is the major climber among the forwards in light of Southampton’s upcoming six matches.

Four goals in his first three appearances serve as a reminder of the Italian’s potential. With his fitness now hopefully up to scratch after returning from injury, the January signing – having dropped to just 6.4 – is staking a claim as a third forward option for Wildcard teams over those back-to-back doubles.

As highlighted by his 16-point haul in Gameweek 27, Dusan Tadic is capable of posting huge hauls for the Saints, yet a single assist in the subsequent five also underlines the Serbian’s inconsistency.

Given that Tadic sets you back 6.9, though, we’ll also be monitoring James Ward-Prowse (5.0) and Nathan Redmond (5.9) as cheaper routes into Claude Puel’s attack.

As the only team to offer a pair of home matches in Double Gameweek 37 – against Leicester and West Brom – investment in the Manchester City attack could pay off.

Leroy Sane has to be our pick from the centre of the park. The German international has started each of his side’s last 12 league matches, chalking up four goals and a pair of assists over that period. Priced at just 7.6 and owned by only 5%, Sane squares up to Middlesbrough, Palace and Watford from next week onwards.

Gabriel Jesus‘ return to training stalls Sergio Aguero in the forward standings. Having found the net in five successive Gameweeks – and scoring in the FA Cup loss to Arsenal – the Argentine has found his best form of the season in recent weeks.

But Aguero limped off at Wembley, so if Jesus can return to contention, a price of just 8.6 to his team-mate’s 12.8 would have significant repercussions on our end of season plans.

Bournemouth’s Josh King keeps his spot among the top five midfield options after netting for the eighth time in nine outings in Saturday’s rout of Middlesbrough. He may not have a Double Gameweek to offer but a trip to Sunderland, followed by home clashes with Stoke and Burnley, could barely be kinder for the 6.1-priced midfielder. Those without Wildcards will surely be clinging on.

Wilfried Zaha slips a little this time around ahead of his home encounter with Spurs on Wednesday. Palace have a kind home fixture against Burnley next weekend but, with trips to City and United in Gameweeks 36 and 38 respectively, will his owners look to hold for a Gameweek 37 visit from Hull when the Eagles are one of ten teams without a double?

Elsewhere for Palace, Christian Benteke owners will be holding tight, for now at least, – double-figure hauls against Chelsea and Liverpool in the last five Gameweeks suggest he could continue to deliver returns.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s Jamie Vardy looks an assured starter for the five-match run-in. He’s hardly cheap at 9.9, but the front man’s transformation under Craig Shakespeare has been remarkable.

Vardy has racked up six goals, three assists and 12 bonus points in seven appearances since the change of manager, producing points on each of those occasions.

Having netted eight of his 11 goals at the King Power Stadium, you’d fancy Vardy to benefit from those home clashes with Watford and Bournemouth (either side of his Double Gameweek 37) to flirt with selection in our squads. Those with Wildcards and in need of a combustible end of season differential will surely be considering the Foxes striker.

You will find our current Watchlist standings in your right-hand menu on desktop and mobile.

Sterling to King (15 DGW'ers aren't essential), then upgrade the D.

Just following on from a previous post. It's quite an interesting point that sacrificing one higher priced option to upgrade three defenders for the DGW could be brilliant.

With City Arsenal and Chelsea all having Double clean sheet potential, surely it's worth considering?? Just a quick theory.

    Yoshida (3), Stephens(3), Holgate(6), OTHER, OTHER
    Hazard (0.0 ITB) (20)

    TOTAL = 32

    OR

    Koscielny (8), Kolarov(12), Rose/Alonso (12) OTHER OTHER
    JWP (0.1 ITB) (7)

TOTAL = 39, take away the assist for JWP and it's 36 but still worth more.

With the other two possibly also being premium by the way, presuming you're not going for a c20.0m total defense.

Now I've not gone for a Chelsea defender here but could do Kolarov to Stones/Clichy then use the rest for Alonso (More affordable if you've had him for a while).

Clearly I've used presumed scores but think I've been generous all round (no defender attacking points either) and it could go either way BUT if any premium options present a rotation risk, surely it's not worth it and using the funds elsewhere? I know you have captaincy on this but again you'd captain someone else that would also score 20 points (the dream?).

Admittedly I'm saying this on the back of having Kolarov for the City DGW and captaining Negredo this week so have a slight bias when it comes to DGW defenders HOWEVER I do not believe my logic to be flawed.

Also forgot to mention, this theory could work for the likes of Dele Alli etc. Possibly to less of an affect but maybe even Lukaku? What's the likelihood of him scoring 20 points in his single GW. I'll likely have Hazard for the DGW but all about the theory.

It's why some of us have got Anichebe as an enabler in our WC sides, leaves me with a quality starting 7 mids/forwards and Alonso, Kos, Vert and two Saints double DGW'ers at the back.

This. It also makes for an interesting benching problem for the Ars/Soton double wk. I think I'll be benching at least one Soton double week defender

Interesting counterpoint. I just know that I went for a premium defense coming out of the last international break and low and behold I got sucked into a rotation vortex. Made me think that "nailed on" isn't as predictable as it used to be during other parts of the season, so spending money on premium defenders, just to watch them sit on my bench would make me more angry than cheapies in the same situation. But I do admit, you could be on to something if the rotation risk doesn't impact the premium guys you select.

      1. greghammer95
        • 16 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Very true! Walker/Coleman I guess? There are time's in the season where premium defenders just don't work but even then it could be worth getting three players in that are around 5.0m and more nailed on?

Counterpoint to your counterpoint, if one of the defender's gets rotated you've still got two more, if the premium attacker gets rotated, that's it? Points impact theoretically less affected?

I think I'll be using this logic on getting rid of Lukaku for say Gabbiadini or an enabler, was going to keep but could better use his value elsewhere.

I think for sure you need to go with 2 premium defenders always (in my case Alonso and Monreal/Bailly) and one Saints defender.

So, in that respect I agree with you. I would never sacrifice Hazard, though - the projected highest scorer for GW37.

I know you can't look too much into underlying stats, but Herrera absolutely kills Kante in passes, key passes, chances created, tackles, interceptions, blocks, clearences, aerial duels, successful take ons and most other criteria...

Is Ngolo really all that or are we blinded by the Kante goggles and the Leicester effect?

Wouldn't call Herrera dirty; the likes of Roy Keane, Joey Barton, Even Sergio Ramos, occasionally even Dele Alli or Rojo are what I'd call dirty players. Can't say I've seen him hurt an opponent or be deserving of a straight red.

He plays with a passion that I quite like

For me, I've not watched as much football as I'd have liked over the last couple of years, whenever I watch Kante though he's one CDM that I actually notice on the pitch making that impact where it counts and when it's unexpected, he pounces on opponents and sets up quick counters.

Every team notice's there own CDM, West Ham fan here, obviously think Mark Noble is a legend. But to notice it somewhere else, for me, I find quite something.

Kante wins more tackles though, and his distribution is better. He also recovers an insane amount of balls. It was more pronounced at Leicester though, with a different set up and a more combative Kante.

His speed is a massive thing too - Kante is so quick across the ground. I like Herrera though, and his marginalisation for so long as a big mistake.

I should be clearer - Kante is better in terms of passing percentages but he is not incisive. Kante will not create as much as Herrera, but Kante will misplace a pass less often.

                BPL p/90 mins

He does have more tackles lost though, you're right. Maybe he just attempts more. Also this comparison should be hugely in Kante's favor as Herrera is seen as a more creative player

I'm looking at average per game and I expect you are looking at average per 90? The FFS scout resource reflects a higher amount of tackles per game, recoveries per game, and percentage of tackles won for Kante. I'm assuming it's ok to say this because I doubt it will influence any of our fantasy choices 😀

I'm not sure what recoveries cover, but yeah Kante has less tackles lost! I changed it to average p/ game and Kante is 0.01% higher than Herrera on tackles, but every other defence criteria he's still significantly weaker.

He also does much better than Kante on possession and attacking criterias, whereas Kante SHOULD be far superior on defensive ones

Irrespective, Herrera has done very well this season, but it is not fair to say that he kills Kante in some of the aforementioned stats. Kante's passing percentages are also higher in all areas of the pitch (including the final third).

I also like Gueye alot, as an Everton fan. He is an extremely successful tackler with alot of energy. His passing is not up to Herrera and Kante's levels though, in terms of consistency.

Why do Southampton need to rotate centre backs? They havent been involved in cup football in a while and Stephens has played 10 league games this season, and Yoshida 16. It's only 2 extra mid-week games.

Yeah it is hard to call anyway - if one thing is for sure, there will be a few rotation shockers between now and the end of the season. I expect that United and City will be particularly frustrating in that respect.

      There's always risk of rotation.

However, I don't expect many points from them anyway so if Yosh/Stephens misses one game of three, it's OK.

    Siggy jwp Son pedro puncheon

    Lukaku aguero kane

I like it but not sure on all out attack with Puncheon in the team. 4 non blanks all season. Would rather Yoshida CS potential Hull (H).

If you could swap Puncheon for someone a bit better then I'd say go for it, same also goes for JWP a little bit.

Really interested in how Poch uses Son this week. Not really bothered about his points as I'm not expecting much but really want to see him back in that attacking position. If he keeps it up he's a certainty for the DGW37 squad and a great enabler. Him and Jesus could be key.

How important do we think Kane is for the run in? Spurs don't need to worry about goal difference, so they could revert to a 3-4-3, looking to close out games 1-0 or 2-0. Plus these aren't exactly plum fixtures...

    ARS
    whu
    MUN/lei

I don't think I'd captain him any week and getting now makes getting Hazard and a MCY attacker very difficult without a WC.

Spurs would only become tight if the gap suddenly closed down. While it remains at 4 points I don't see them changing their style just yet.

I see things completely differently - Kane the only "essential" player.

His goal involvement % is sky-high and he appears fixture-proof.

I see him as the "new Aguero" - an automatic captain choice. Plus no other strikers really excite me at the moment.

Going without is high risk - but if you are correct, potentially high reward.

WC finally in a place worth sharing:

    DDG/Pickford
    Alonso/Maguire/Dawson/Yoshida/Stones (if healthy)
    Hazard/Sanchez/Eriksen/Sane/JWP
Kane/Gabb/Jesus (Rashford for this week then Jesus if confirmed starting)

Best I can manage so far...

Not sure I'd have Maguire on a WC despite his recent form. Stones is a rotation risk even when fit and Aguero will share gametime with Jesus for sure. I'm also not sure in JWP's points potential and maybe he's a waste of a spot.

All in all I'd personally want a rethink.

Had Maguire for weeks and he has been a star. For 4.4 no one is getting more points that him right now.

JWP best 5th mid for the bench boost and if pre-injury Jesus play time tells you anything, Pep likes him.

Don't really agree with any of this...

There was no point in you posting then.

Stones? Whatever you opinion is the Fact is that he's not nailed and is very likely to miss at least one of the double gameweek fixtures.

Aguero and Pep's relationship has developed a lot since the injury to Jesus. As has Aguero's ability to play in Pep's "system".

Looking back to historic points and play isn't a guarantee of future points.

Wow Vardy. Great spot @Scouts. Had not considered him, but am now. The home games (WAT; BOU) either side of the (admittedly poor) DGW look so tasty. Have been unsure about Gabbi but this might well be a good idea. Scuppers my Cech in for Hennessey move, but Hennesey has HUL in 37 so I'm not too upset about that.

JWP is also at risk. The look on his face last week when he came off at 59 minutes was telling. I think the whole team is a bit fed up with Puel's quick fire substitution strategy. AND THEN came the hilarious Shane Long on for 22 minutes to give way to JRod for another 8 minutes. Its like the keystone cops down there.

I would drop Walker for Vertonghen (as an owner, Trippier rotation has been doing my head in). I'd drop Valencia. If hell-bent on a United defender, Bailly/Blind.

Gabriel isn't -nailed- although has put in some good performances lately. He could be, if Wenger sticks with the 3-4-3. Hard to tell without a longer stretch of games, sadly.

Given the way Jesus played pre-injury do we think he'll become nailed again from Boro onwards?

Don't think his form is even a factor.
Pep clearly prefers him, he's part of the long-term plan

If he is fit, I say he plays.

Can play left or right as well and I bet it hurts Sterling and Sane's chances as much as Aguero.

Thursday will be interesting to see where he slots in, even off the bench.

    Rate my wildcard please?
    Cech Pickford
Holebas Holgate Stones(if fit) Yoshida Davies
    Hazard Capoue Alli Sanchez JWP
    Kane Gabb Jesus (if fit)

I dislike Capoue but I don't have money for a better option, and he has a DGW so who knows. Also if Jesus isn't fit I may have a problem has I have no B plan in attack (possibly Rashford and upgrade Capoue?)

Yeah, Rashers until Jesus is nailed on.

Squeezing in King for JWP so you don't have to play him or Capoue...
