We assessed the double Gameweek 36 defensive options yesterday and now turn our attentions to attack in the second of our two-part series.

Neither Arsenal nor Southampton approach their pair of fixtures in convincing form, yet while the Saints are ensconced in the security of mid-table, Arsene Wenger’s men have plenty to play for with a top-four spot still in the balance.

Their push for a Champions League finish is very much in Fantasy managers’ minds – Alexis Sanchez, as the top scoring player in FPL, is the most sought-after pick in the Gameweek ahead of a home encounter with Man United and a midweek trip to St Mary’s.

Over 66,000 have snapped up the Chilean this week, yet one goal in the last six Gameweeks is a clear concern, with the recent switch to 3-4-2-1 seeing Sanchez alternate between a central support berth and the lone striker spot.

Mesut Ozil has been stationed alongside Sanchez behind the lone striker in recent matches. A secure starter, two goals and a pair of assists in his last six make Ozil the Gunners’ form attacker and, at 9.4 to Sanchez’ 11.5, he is far kinder on the budget.

Wenger’s shape-shifting has seen Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud all drift in and out of the starting XI in recent matches, with too many question marks hovering over their pitch time.

The switch to 3-4-2-1 could promote Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as an unlikely double Gameweek asset, though. He has been handed a wing-back berth in recent matches and bagged an assist in the FA Cup win over City.

For Southampton, Claude Puel’s recent penchant for rotation may have limited our viable options.

The number one transfer target for Gameweek 35, Manolo Gabbiadini, was hauled off before 60 minutes in last weekend’s goalless home draw against Hull City.

Four goals in his first three league appearances highlighted his points potential, yet the Italian’s pitch-time remains an issue – he’s been replaced before the hour-mark in two of his three outings since returning from injury.

Having played 90 minutes in each of the last five Gameweeks, Dusan Tadic (6.9) looks the most secure option in Southampton’s midfield. Granted, a single assist in his last seven is far from encouraging, while the Serbian’s missed spot-kick against Hull has also deterred many from taking the leap.

Elsewhere in the sub-6.0 category, Nathan Redmond (5.9) and James Ward-Prowse (5.0) have both started eight of the Saints’ last nine league matches, scoring three and two times respectively over that period.

However, it’s only recently that doubts have emerged over their minutes – Redmond was benched in Gameweek 34 and Ward-Prowse in Gameweek 35 as Puel looked to give the fit-again Sofiane Boufal more pitch-time.

The Top Targets

Alexis Sanchez – despite a downturn in output, the Chilean remains a dominant figure in his side’s attacks and has produced eight double-digit hauls this term. Owned by over 25%, Sanchez looks the runaway armband candidate this week – over 51% of the voters have picked him in our Captain Poll.

Manolo Gabbiadini – although there are question marks over the Italian’s pitch-time, he still offers the most potent goal threat in Puel’s side. Since making his debut in Gameweek 24, Gabbiadini has registered more shots in the box than any team-mate. Over the season, only Sergio Aguero (18.3 minutes) has fired an attempt on goal more frequently than the winter signing (22.3 minutes) among first-choice forwards.

Differentials

Mesut Ozil – it’s fair to say that Ozil has been fortunate to score twice in the Gunners’ last six – he’s produced just three efforts on goal to Sanchez’s 16. Nonetheless, the German has the potential to serve up explosive hauls – he’s registered 10+ points hauls on six occasions this term.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – he has started three of the four matches as a right wing-back in all competitions since Wenger’s change of formation. The only exception was at home to Leicester City, where he was benched with a minor knock. A big punt but, at a price of just 5.8, the versatile midfielder could appeal to those unwilling to shell out on Ozil.

Dusan Tadic – over the last six Gameweeks, the playmaker sits fifth for shots on goal (18) and fourth for chances created (16). Although he’s struggled to translate that into Fantasy returns, Tadic – with just a 2% ownership – has the underlying numbers to emerge as a valid differential for those keen to invest in Puel’s attack.

Nathan Redmond – he may have only scored six times this season, yet the summer signing from Norwich still boasts a decent goal threat. Priced at a mere 5.9, Redmond is ranked top for shots, efforts in the box and attempts on target for Southampton in 2016/17.

Monreal very likely to be rotated, right? Was rotated during the Christmas period and benched in February for Gibbs because Gibbs was better "suited" for that game. Now they are playing 4 games in 9 days. Can't see him playing all of them?

Missed 3 games. One due to injury and rotated in two (played 20 minutes in one of them). With 4 games in 9 days I'm fairly sure he'll be rotated again. Will most likely play 3 though, which is still good over 2 GWs.

Isn't the difference this time that Monreal and Gibbs can be in the same team in the 3-4-2-1? He's more likely to be rotated with one of the centre backs

Exactly! Monreal playing centre back and left back now. If Mustafi is available Arsenal will surely go him Koscielny and Gabriel as the back 3 and Monreal back to wing back.

    Bottomed. Re: Saints and JWP

Trying to second-guess Puel's team sheets for the double, I think Puel could start JWP in both games alongside Davis and Romeu in a more defense-minded lineup. JWP will thus be the more attacking mid of the three and use his set pieces as a weapon against Pool and Arsenal.

    Does this sound reasonable?

Do the chips actually add anything to the overall experience of the game? They were introduced to keep the casuals interested for longer with the view of increasing the YoY traffic growth to the site. From looking at my MLs I dont think I can say ive noticed a significant difference. Would you happily see them removed altogether or do you think they add a much needed extra dimention?

      • 9 Years

I agree it gives people hope and keeps them playing longer without making much of a material difference to rankings and performance. If all three chips were to return a combined average 50-75 points it's like 2-3% of a top manager's score, around 5-7% of the average perhaps.

Keeps things fun, I'd say keep 🙂

I would make one change to the FPL game, the right to an automatic free transfer if any of your players is ruled out through injury for a month or more.

I wildcarded early this year. This is my 4th season of fantasy and most likely my best. I've always wildcarded early, typically in January or Feb as a lot injuries and changes occur over the winter period. As always, unhappy with my team I made 10+ changes (GW21) and continued to climb. I saw many dire teams rot this season because they held onto this belief that the DGW-BB combo would erase a season's worth of sin. For many of this fantasy religion, the saving of your wildcard has become a treasured tradition. Its time people realise the higher point ceiling lies in the wildcard bolstering your team over a period of months, not simply 3 weeks at the end. This is my team following a -4 taken this week. Compared to most templates I see 2-3 changes. My point, as unpopular as it may be, is careful planning can easily nullify the benefit of the late wildcard.

    Jaku Heaton
    Alonso Yoshida Monreal (Robertson, Bailly)
    San(c)hez Eriksen Alli Sane King
    Kane Jesus Gabbi

Be interested to know your score and rank when you deployed your WC and again at the end of the season. I'm a 37 BBer so would be useful to compare, see if we can quantify the value of each strategy.

I think we would need a lot of data from both camps though.

gameweek history is linked on my profile with rank etc. I agree definitely needs more data

It all depends. Using when you wildcarded (GW21) as an example I can say that I was 256k then and right now I'm 78k. Didn't use my WC early, was still able to climb, and now hope to climb even further over the doubles.

I did early last year and slowly hunted down ML leader. Finally beat him with TC on Sanchez for 75 and a well used BB on other DGW.
Like you I primed my team by bringing in a future DGW player in a few weeks in advance. Think I only played -8 in hits getting there.
Kinda wish I'd done it earlier again this season.
      Well done champ.

    Who do you captain?

    a) Ozil (MUN, sot)
    b) Gabbiadini (liv, ARS)
    c) Hazard (MID)
    d) Costa (MID)
    e) Kane (whu)

So last season, I ruined my team in order to get in DGW players. I.e. taking out spurs players who then scored heavily in their SGWs...

No sure i like the idea of loading with Arsenal/Southampton players at all. Just get Sanchez and aim for in form DGW players the following week.

    Thoughts?

If you're wildcarding you may as well get a couple of each for 36; bear in mind you have a transfer for 37 and a hit on top of that would most likely be repaid.

Luckily this year almost all the 37 DGWers have good 36 and 38 fixtures, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

I always aim for a DGW captain, but other than that the DGW is a bit of a distraction.

This week, I am happier with Jesus and Sterling than I would be with, say, Gabbi and JWP. Sanchez almost a must have with two fixtures, even allowing for recent form - he's the top scorer in the game!

    Forster (Valdes)

    Gabriel vertonghen Stephens (Ward, Gibson)

Sanchez (TC) Walcott Alli King JWP

    Aguero Llorente (Rashford)

then Aguero and King > Hazard and Jesus for GW 37 (BB)

    A- downgrade Sanchez to Ozil
    B- Downgrade Hazard to Pedro

Last 3 GW worth $1500 between me or my rival

RIVAL (WC Last Week, TC Sanchez GW36, BB GW 37) :
    Hennesy (Pickford)
    Blind Cahill Bavies (Gabriel Holgate)
Alli Sanchez Hazard Redmond (Oriol Romeu)
    Costa Afobe Lukaku

ME (WC This Week, no TC, no BB, Leading 71 points) :
    Caballero (Jakupovic)
    Monreal Koscielny Alonso (Stephens Kingsley)
    Alli Sanchez Hazard King (T.Caroll)
    Costa Kane Jesus

Question : Me win $1500 or Rival win it ?
    Any tips?

Would nearly be a choke of Newcastle 96 proportions if you blow a 71 point lead at this stage.

Thoughts on this WC team? 0.1 ITB.

    Caballero - Pickford
    Alonso - Monreal - Verthongen - Huth - Stephens
    Sanchez - Hazard - Eriksen - King - Albrighton
    Kane - Jesus - Anichebe

    Thanks!
