Southampton and Arsenal both deliver a clean sheet in the first match of their Double Gameweek 36, with the Saints’ stopper Fraser Forster the big ticket item thanks to a spot-kick save at Anfield. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain proves a deadly differential, though Alexis Sanchez blanks again as the Gunners defeat a much-changed Manchester United at the Emirates.

On the Rise

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Reinvented as a right wing-back in recent weeks, the midfielder showed just why he was voted Arsenal’s April Player of the Month by providing assists for both goals in today’s win over Man United.

Sitting in less than 2% of FPL squads, Oxlade-Chamberlain was picked up by just 17,000 FPL managers last week after serving up just a single assist from Gameweek 16 onwards.

With both Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil doing little to justify their premium price tags, today’s haul highlights the England international’s value at a mere 5.8.

Double Gameweek 37 clashes against Stoke and Sunderland now await, before a final day home encounter with Everton. Those with Wildcards still in hand may well find a place for Oxlade-Chamberlain as the Gunners’ bid for a top-four finish gains momentum.

Fraser Forster, Jack Stephens
Drafted in by a combined 193,000+ FPL managers for their Double Gameweek clashes with Liverpool and Arsenal, the Southampton backline and keeper chalked up a fourth clean sheet in seven matches in today’s goalless draw at Anfield.

The result can be credited to Fraser Forster, who ended James Milner’s 100% record from the spot to also earn maximum bonus in the first of his pair of fixtures.

The Saints’ stopper followed on from Man United’s David de Gea, after the latter ended Double Gameweek 34 as joint top for returns, thanks to a 17-point haul over matches against Burnley and Man City.

Owned by just 4% of FPL managers, Forster picked up 16 points from today alone to steal a march on his Double Gameweek rivals ahead of the Gunners’ midweek visit.

The top target in Southampton’s defence, Jack Stephens was transferred in by over 66,000 new owners last week.

Granted, he was somewhat fortuitous after conceding the spot-kick, yet Stephens once again highlighted his ability to collect bonus when his side earned the shut-out – he’s now earned additional points from each of the Saints’ last four clean sheets.

At a price of just 4.2, the schedule suggests he’ll continue to flourish – Southampton have a Double Gameweek 37 that includes a trip to Middlesbrough before a final day home clash with Stoke City.

In Decline

Alexis Sanchez
It’s a single goal in seven now for the Chilean, who continues to look a shadow of his former self in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

Second only to Man City’s Gabriel Jesus for transfers in last week, Sanchez was the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll and claimed over 492,000 armbands (11.2%). Yet he mustered just two attempts on goal, with neither finding the target.

A midweek blank against the Saints will place major question marks over his captaincy credentials for Double Gameweek 37 at a time when the likes of Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham’s big hitters also play twice.

Gabriel
While premium-priced trio Laurent Koscielny, Petr Cech and Nacho Monreal vindicated the recent raft of Double Gameweek investment, the Brazilian’s run of five successive stats came to an abrupt end against United.

Acquired by over 51,000 FPL managers last week, Gabriel was replaced by Rob Holding in the back-three as Arsenal chalked up a fourth clean sheet in their last five at the Emirates.

With Sunderland and Everton still to pay visit and a trip to Stoke as part of Double Gameweek 37, the prospect of further defensive returns may well be on the cards for Wenger’s outfit. Gabriel’s security of starts, however, looks far less certain.

Manolo Gabbiadini, Nathan Redmond
Over 108,000 FPL managers acquired the Italian for Double Gameweek 36 – more than any Southampton player – yet today’s blank means he’s served up just a single assist in his last five league outings.

Worryingly for his 8% FPL owners, Gabbiadini failed to register a single shot on goal and did not touch the ball in the penalty area before being replaced by Shane Long on 68 minutes.

While a midweek visit from Arsenal still affords a degree of hope, the Saints’ attack is causing reason for concern – they have failed to find the net in three of their last four matches.

Another blank against the Gunners and those holding Gabbiadini may well consider their options, given that one of their Double Gameweek 37 matches is against Man United. The return of Charlie Austin to reserve action on Friday night also offers Puel food for thought as he attempts to address his side’s woes in the final third.

Second only to Gabbiadini for transfers in among the Southampton contingent, Redmond fared even worse in the first of the Saints’ two Gameweek 36 matches.

Benched for the second time in three as James Ward-Prowse was handed a recall, he ended with one point as a second-half substitute.

With Puel’s rotation clearly still a factor, the 67,000+ who acquired the 5.9-priced Redmond for the two matches could also be seeking alternatives, given that nine other teams will also play twice next time around.

Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino
The most transferred out player ahead of Gameweek 36, Coutinho recovered from the leg problem that forced him off at Watford on Monday night.

Yet despite playing from start to finish, the 19%-owned playmaker could not breach the Saints’ resilient rearguard and extended a run that had seen him score in four of five appearances prior to limping off early at Vicarage Road.

Unable to add to his tally of five double-digit home returns, Firmino also failed to produce the goods. After a run of returns in six successive appearances over Gameweek 27-33, he has now drawn blanks in each of the Reds’ last three league fixtures.

While a final day visit from Middlesbrough still looks encouraging, Liverpool now travel to a West Ham outfit that has chalked up four clean sheets in five and kept out Spurs’ attack on Friday evening.

Devoid of a Double Gameweek 37, the exodus is already picking up pace – the pair are among the three most sold midfielders since the deadline passed, with Coutinho leading the way as over 12,000+ look elsewhere.

Manchester United
United’s bid for a place in next season’s Champions League via success in the Europa League continues to wreak havoc with Jose Mourinho’s domestic teamsheets.

The Red Devils’ manager made no secret of his intentions to rotate prior to the match and was good to his word as key players such as Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Daley Blind were all omitted from the XI.

United may have a Double Gameweek 37 to follow, but the first of those fixtures is away to Spurs and takes place just three days after their Europa League semi-final second-leg clash with Celta Vigo.

Should United prevail against their Spanish opponents on Thursday, they would clinch a place in the final, which takes place on May 24 – just three days after the end of the Premier League season.

Essentially, in terms of schedule, progressing past Celta would hand the Old Trafford side a run of four matches between May 14 and May 24. Given that three of them would be league fixtures, many holding United regulars – perhaps aside from David de Gea – could now cut and run with Mourinho potentially set to continue his recent shuffles.

Btw this 'on the beach ' term which keeps getting thrown about is nonsense imo. Supposedly Southampton were one of those teams. Did you watch the game tonight? Passion from all the players playing like they were fighting for a champions league spot. When Liverpool won the pen they were incensed and did you see all their reactions when forster made the save? Didn't look disinterested or 'on the beach' to me.

This is a case of when you let your fantasy thinking take over reality. Players, managers still have thier pride, future prospects etc to play for. Another case in point Sunderland putting Hull to the sword when already relegated and Hull having a must win game.

There is no on the beach and we should just play the form and fixtures as per usual.

The thing is - it isnt nonsense but it has to be contextualised. Not every team with supposedly 'nothing' to play for will not try. Southampton, with league places to aim for, and after much criticism and conjecture, have a reason to try. Southampton have pride to play for, and perhaps more importantly for some players, futures elsewhere.

But Everton? That Swansea result was predictable. I'm an Everton fan, and I've lost so much desire for results atm, because our position will not change. We can't be caught, and we can't catch anyone, and there is no way, as a consequence, that the match on the weekend meant as much to us as it did Swansea. And that was obvious from watching us.

It is a case by case basis, but I've seen plenty of times die off at the end of the season when there is little to play for. I remember Everton getting a 7-0 drubbing by Arsenal after top 4 was secured in the early days of Moyes.

Yeah, Watford, Everton, West Brom, Stoke are all examples. Something in the game needs to happen for them to maintain their interest i.e. they either somehow need to be leading or drawing. The 'on the beach' teams don't give up the moment the game starts, but they give up the moment they go behind and have to fight and scrap to change the course of the game.

In a weird way the likes of Leicester being "on the beach" for me benefits a player like Mahrez. He likes to hog the ball, showboat and be selfish.

In a zero pressure situation he's a great player to own imo.

Can't say Leicester are on the beach. I know they have nothing to play for, but they got so much criticism after the Ranieri sacking, that I think they'll keep trying under the new manager to win back fans.

This 'on the beach' applies mainly to smaller teams playing the bigger teams. They will fight to stay in it, but the moment they trail, you pretty much know the game is over.

Yeah i get the term of on the beach and it's not correct in what I'm applying it to with Leicester but I'm trying to explain a good side with no pressure as defending champions with Ranieri gone and no pressure because of league position.

That a player like Mahrez can in that scenario go out and express him particularly in this run in period, i believe anyway.

              Leicester aren't on the beach.
They're playing for Craig Shakespeare to keep his job.

He was assistant to Nigel Pearson for their amazing escape from relegation 2 years back, he assisted Claudio Ranieri when they won the title last season by sticking with Nigel Pearson's methods, and he restored their fortunes this season after Ranieri had failed miserably in attempting to change them.
Ranieri also sacked some of the backroom staff including the club psychologist at the start of this season, and appeared to be ignoring Shakespeare's advice.

Perhaps Nigel Pearson and Craig Shakespeare ought to be given more credit than Claudio Ranieri for Leicester's title win.

I am a Swansea fan and believe me it did not look like Everton eased up in the last 15 minutes.

I felt it was a typical Everton performance - and there have been better and worse performances than the one against Swansea.

Swansea recently went on a terrible run losing against the likes of Watford, Hull, Bournemouth etc and if Swansea were safe by then it would have been ... ''Swans on the beach'' type comments ... rather than just a bad form issue

I think the Hull v Sunderland game boiled down to Hull playing under extreme pressure and Sunderland having zero pressure.

But i do think there is a case of "on the beach" or season petering out. Those 3pm Saturday kick offs were a drab pile of nonsense, as was Spurs on Friday, as we're both games on Sunday.

Agree on the Hull game. However look at the 3 relegation threatened Championship teams who all won v 'beach' teams. By definition these are poor sides yet they all beat teams above them.

Swansea beat Everton because Swansea are fighting for their lives and Everton are cemented in the table at their position. The beach argument is definitely relative, but also definitely a thing. Swansea beating Everton 10 weeks ago would have been surprising, but this weekend it was fully expected. On the other hand, Sunderland finally scored a few and won because they can play freely and have nothing to lose, whereas Hull were do-or-die and choked on the pressure due to their lack of quality. The Liverpool game was not shocking, Southampton generally have a good defense, Liverpool struggle to break down any team that doesn't fly at them full pelt. Southampton is on the beach to a degree and thus their attack looked lethargic and poor, whereas the defenders aren't going to go out there and get embarrassed on purpose, so they try hard and succeeded. But you have to break it down based on a team by team basis, look at their individuals who are playing for a place in the team next year, or a transfer. Have to look at the coaches, their job security, how long they've been in the job, how secure the players feel under said coach etc. i.e. Watford and WBA are massively on the beach, Everton also but they still have a striker wanting to top score. Leicester need to play well after all their drama (a) to get a respectable finish and (b) to make their new coach look successful and make sure he keeps his job after all the drama it took to get him to be manager over Ranieri. It's all relative and there is definitely merit to analyzing teams as do-or-die, fighting for 4th, and on the beach.

I agree. I think it's better to diagnose what we see rather than try and second guess underlying motivations for players and managers we have never met and never will. Teams like Everton are out of form, is it because they lack motivation? Perhaps. Does it matter? Not really just avoid because they are out of form.

      I watched the game.

They were pretty spirited and organized in defense, but in attack they did not even try. Their first shot off goal came in the 74th minute. There were plenty of opportunities for them on the counter, but they lacked concentration and could not even produce one correct pass.

As a Gabbi owner you could tell this makes me pretty upset - he almost did not touch the ball.

Maybe it's a case of them being on the beach, or maybe it's just that they are at that level ability-wise. Who knows - maybe it's a bit of both. In either case, they do not give me any confidence they will try to score in their remaining games. I'm even considering swapping Gabbi for Llorente for the double - at least the latter will try to score.

      Cheers!

Yup, watched the game as well. Gabbi being recently back from injury with no massive motivation to score and win games at this stage of the season wouldn't help you as an owner. Not to mention Austin's return, and higher rotation since they have less to play for (Shane Long). Their performance up front was flat especially relative to a Liverpool side fighting for Top 4. Defensively though, the defenders aren't going to go out and get mauled on purpose. Notably, Van Dijk could easily be leaving to Liverpool/elsewhere in summer and thus those CBs are fighting for a starting role next season etc. All these type of factors need to be analyzed imo to get the bigger picture and make decisions from now til season end.

But it's often freak results that build that up. I'd never pick Southampton to have a CS at Liverpool very often of rest Kane for Ndidi.
Shows you've got a good back for injuries and rotations.
But it's true it almost never use more than one sub a week. Having a stronger bench gives you rotation options for fixtures.

Wow, that seemed waaaay too much until I seen my 286 points benched this season and that's not counting the 20 points on the bench this week. It's either we've too good a team that scores a lot every week or we're doing something very wrong!!?

Not that many when you break it down though.

302 points over 36 weeks = 8.5 points per week

That's only just over 2 points per bench player per week

      Doesn't seem outrageous really.

    De Gea
    Holgate Yoshida Alonso
    Sanchez Alli Tadic Hazard
    Kane Benteke Jesus

    Randolph - PVA Maguire Clayton

1 FT, 0.3 itb (Just TC left)

Chasing a 50 point lead and rival has already made 2 transfers for a hit. Trying to work out what he did haha. He has BB left and I fear he's made 2 cover moves. 😡

I am looking at getting Sané in but would Pedro be better? Rival can't get him as he has 3 Chelsea already.

I could do Tadic to Pedro for free, avoid the hit and be up 4 points on rival before the gameweek has started.

50 points is a lot.....I think your best bet is to go Man City, probably Silvia and Kompany, and yes pick up Pedro. You probably need all DGW players and your best bet might be on the defensive, play a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Defenders, I think, are likely to play both games.....I like Kos and Monreal. Take the hits you need to get your best team....

I disagree with taking many hits at this stage. You're only making your task harder.
If your only aim now is to cstch him you need to take big differential punts.
Silva is one. Fabregas is another. Sterling? Mahrez? Think non template. Transfer out players he has. It's your only way even though you may fall further behind. I came back from 65 points last year with 2 games left altho we both still had bench boost.
Your TC is crucial next GW.
Maybe punting on taking Sanchez out for big Benteke upgrade. Sanchez, Tekkers out for Sterling and Costa?
Don't lose the faith. It's doable but you've got to throw caution to the wind.

You'd have to take a risk by dropping Sanchez or Alli for extra money.

I have a feeling they could sneak into top 4, if Chelsea win tomorrow- Spurs got absolutely nothing to play for, they play Man Utd at home and Leicester away. Those will be sloppy games in my books. Ozil and Sanchez could be the way forward.

        1. fedolefan
          • 11 Years

Hmm, I'd like to believe you and I have them both mainly because I try to play fairly non-template. Already regretting though and would much rather have the Spurs guys. I've captained Ozil ovr Sanchez this week 😛 and am slapping myself pretty much every match day.

Think this year Spurs will come out strong to make a point even though they have nothing to play for. Almost like saying, we got close again, but we'll get you next time and it starts now.

For enough but their (Spurs) opponents aren't easy. Arsenal will be bombing those teams and their defences. King will also face a crazy good goalie in Heaton and has been a bit toothless without Afobe. Albrighton- tough fixtures but could make up for King in those two.

The man utd that just lost 2-0 at Arsenal and will be playing a similarly under strength team next Sunday and Leicester who yes are good at home but can be got at defensively. Then of course playing Hull away in 38 which could be anything. Have to take 38 into consideration too...

I wouldnt be so hasty with hits for Spurs players after just one bad result.

Bailly is an issue, as United have zero motivation in the league. I'd carefully listen to what Koeman has to say about Holgate too. I own him, but there is a chance that Kenny might start a game before the season is finished.

And by motivation, I also mean in terms of starting important players. I'd be amazed if Bailly starts the rest of United's games. I could see him getting just one of the final 3 in the league.

Why is Arsenal playing every game with 10man?

In my opinion ever since Wenger removed Sanchez from striker position and putted him on the wing,he is kinda lost,he is everywhere on the field he keeps playing as roaming playmaker mostly, or even deep lying playmaker, and by doing that loosing strength and not doing his job as inside forward which is ridiculous considering we have Ozil on playmaking duties,or wait what Ozil?WHAT is wrong with Mesut ghost Ozil i honestly dont know...How many games Wenger needs to remove him from the first team...Its obvious he doesnt wanna play for Arsenal anymore, and i dont know why Wenger keeps giving him chances.I have seen in recent matches more killer ball attempts to Ozil from Sanchez then other way around which is funny considering Ozil is too lazy to run, slow whatever, but why isnt Ozil trying to make more through balls...
The fact that is making this even worse is that Arsenal got lucky win today and Welbeck(he wasnt even half bad,100% better then Giroud) scored a goal, which lowers Sanchez chance of getting to that striker position which we all love so much and start delivering us those insane points which we all like :),he can still score there is no doubt about that, form free kicks, penalties, etc, but open play with the likes of Ozil,Giroud,Ramsey oh boy 11.6M gl with that.
And i also know as soon as i remove Sanchez from the squad,Wenger might put him to the striker roll,or Ozil wakes up,and Sanchez scores 3goals in 45mins etc...The fear is real,i know "no balls"

Im sorry about the long and frustrating post,i know i sound like the guys from Arsenal FanTV,had to write something tho, also do you think Sanchez will stay and play for other premier league team and if so where would you like to see him,or would he go abroad.

      (A) would be best ...if Sanchez blanks again on Wednesday. See my post right below for similar question.

Thoughts on a massive -12 for

    Kane / Heaton / Maguire / Zaha
    to
    Costa / Caballero / Kompany / Chamberlain?

Figure since 3 out of 4 are SGW to DGW players, it's only really a -6 that I'm taking

Sanchez has stoke and sunderland coming up. Do you think Sane has a higher chance of covering the hit at more? Can you find another way to get Kompany in?

Also, people here are treating it like Sanchez did NOTHING last night. Yes he wasn't good by any means but could have got something easily that first half if Ramsey was a better player than he is. I'd be very cautious.

Thoughts on a Fabregas punt? Started Chelsea's last four home games, their next two at the Bridge look gorgeous (WAT & SUN), has returned consistently at home even when not starting, and you'd expect him to at least get some minutes off the bench at West Brom. Only 1.9% ownership, on some set pieces and possibly on pens if Costa and Hazard don't play.
