In yet another tense final day, Ben Crabtree has been crowned the Fantasy Premier League champion for 2016/17.

Nestled in the top ten since Gameweek 28, Ben – who made just a single four-point hit in the final 11 Gameweeks –
claimed top spot for the first time in the very final round of fixtures.

Trailing Uwais Ahmed by two points heading into today’s deadline, Ben went ahead before kick-off following Uwais’ four-point transfer hit.

That saw Liverpool pair Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho swapped in for Spurs’ Dele Alli and Leroy Sane of Manchester City – trades that would eventually prove decisive in the battle at the top.

Ben – with two free transfers – made equally radical transfer moves, shifting out Eden Hazard and Victor Anichebe for Bournemouth’s Junior Stanislas and Chelsea’s Diego Costa.

Starting on Ben’s bench, the Cherries midfielder was the makeweight for the gutsy signing of Costa, although, on the day, it was Stanislas who was to prove the unlikely hero.

He scored the opening goal of the day and, with Josh King in Ben’s starting XI but missing out through injury, those points from the bench helped him extend an early lead.

The Stanislas strike, together with assists from Christian Eriksen and Leroy Sane, saw Ben seize a 12-point advantage heading into half-time.

While Uwais quickly countered with early second-half goals from his signings Lallana and Coutinho, Ben edged further ahead with an assist from his own Gameweek 38 capture, Costa.

The tide looked to be turning back in Uwais’ favour when Cesc Fabregas produced one of two assists in the second period. However, Ben Davies’ strike for Spurs on 84 minutes in their 7-1 rout of Hull City was to deal the killer blow.

While Uwais edged the bonus points on the final whistle, the two awarded to Stanislas on Ben’s bench, introduced as the auto-sub for King, were to take him to a final tally of 97. That surpassed Uwais final tally by three points on the day, and by a five-point margin in the overall ranks.

A proven FPL manager of some pedigree, Ben bettered his previous best rank of 353rd back in the 2011/12 season to become the FPL’s latest champion.

Huge congratulations go to Ben from all at Fantasy Football Scout, and also to Uwais who fought a valiant battle to give us a dramatic final day.

Elsewhere, Bibek Thapa from Nepal stormed to a 99 – 68 victory over Polish manager Peter B to claim the FPL cup.

Many congratulations go to Bibek.

We will have further post-season coverage coming up in the next 24-hours, as we round up the winners of this season’s Scout Leagues and Cups.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Buy her something nice and she'll associate it with FF - then you'll be set for next year, which will enable you to buy another present.

Go on, TM, justice for My Pretty Pony 🙂 I'm happy anywhere in amongst that lot, to be honest, though top would be amazing.

As I've said before, I think several of us 'old timers' will be usurped before long anyway as other, better players build up a few seasons history.

But if the HoF is based on positions, rather than points, I would imagine my points increase over the others will not have been matched by an equivalent rank rise as there's little movement in the top k. That could be it, although tbf I've never read how the HoF is calculated, so could be way off base.

How many final league positions would be different if the Evan's header hadn't fluttered McAuley's hair as it sailed past into the net?

Take 6 points off McAuley, give an extra 3 to Evans and an extra 3 to Brunt.

    Hi folks,

By way of a memo for myself for next season I've listed out my lessons learned from this year. Thought it might be interesting to share and also hear the thoughts of the more grizzled in our ranks.

This was my debut FPL season and I didn't discover this site until late on in the campaign. I was ranked well outside the top 1 million in GW20 but have slowly climbed back up to a 30K OR rank. No dramatic green arrows here - I'm sure others have had much more significant moves to the top - but it just goes to show that if you don't panic and concentrate on the basics you can make up a lot of a ground and salvage a disastrous season.

1.) Be wary of 'bargain' Strikers promoted from the Championship.
2.) Assume the worst and have nailed players on the bench.
3.) This is an ownership game.
4.) Do not chase Form. (Redmond, Stones, Fuchs)
5.) Do not get stubborn. (Coleman, Costa YC scenario)
6.) Accept that some players are set and forget even if they don't seem to ever net you points in the fixtures you expect them to. (Coutinho & Hazard - the villains of my season.)
7.) Put stock in twitter rumours on matchday.
8.) Be calculated and aggressive in the transfer market. (TV at end of season was only ~103 million)
9.) Nail the best formation for the Season based off the availability and price of players and stick to it. Prevents you taking unecessary hits to switch in and out of formation.
10.) Do not underestimate the power of saving a FT.
11.) Use 2 FT's and a hit to take a mini-wildcard or correct early transfer gone wrong.
12.) Pay attention to upcoming air miles over international breaks.
13.) Short term punts are rarely the answer.
14.) Bench boost is not the be all and end all of a Season.
15.) A player having a historically good record against a particular team should not sway a transfer decision.
16.) Cheap keeper for the first half of the Season is the way to go. (Pickford, Heaton)
17.) If a player appears to have been dropped, take the hint. (Stanislas)
18.) Save AoA if possible. Possibly for GW38.
19.) Form over Fixtures (Benteke vs Negredo)
20.) Never give up and believe in your game. It's a marathon; not a sprint.

Many thanks to all the FFS members who have helped me with my decisions during the campaign. I'm sorely aware of the need to contribute to the discussion next year. I fall very easily into the forum stalker category.

Congratulations to all you FFS'ers who have achieved their goals this Season. There are some utterly amazing ranks on here. Enjoy Match of the Day!

      Some good comments.

I am not sure about point 3. I see many focusing on ownership, but as it is a marathon (point 20) it is better to maximize expected points than to make worse transfers due to ownership levels.

Point 4 is also questionable. There are some good examples where form has been a good prediction of future points. Just make sure you are looking at form in actual numbers rather than FPL points.

Completely agree - I guess I should have elaborated a bit more on # 3. For instance, I often ended up taking hits for players returning from injury with relatively low ownership at the time because of the fear factor. (e.g. Coutinho, Aguero) But they weren’t too threatening to my rank at the time. But as you suggest, just because a player is highly owned doesn't make them a must buy. Jumping off of Costa and Lukaku at the right times this year were key.

      1) Follow most bandwagons most pay off into points and if not the price rises are helpful
      2) cheap rotating keepers is the one (picks/Heaton)
      3) don't overthink, go with your gut more. (I transferred in Giroud last day because of stats) wanted vardy and Lallana, got coutinho and Giroud
      4) AOA for GW38 next year.

As an additional point, I've been using SOT this year as a good recognition of form, and it's tended to work.. just make sure players are nailed on. Will be doing this again next year and looking at some good defence rotations.

Nice tips, although 4 and 19 are slightly contradictory. My Bench Boost was a mess and I certainly won't be adamant next season on playing it in a Double Gameweek, I think TC is a must but BB is only 4 extra games max. Looking at the GW38 fixtures, it would probably have worked quite well there to be honest. Oh well, 3 months off now 🙂

I’ll certainly consider bench boosting in a SGW though if my bench is looking strong. Cash can then be spread around for the TC DGW to really maximise the value out of the Wildcard.

Difficulty with the DGW bench boost this year was the inability to afford good nailed on players with some actual threat because our funds were demanded elsewhere. Suspect this is probably the case every year (as I say, it’s my first Season) but it sounds like people had cash to spare in the 15/16 Season. So decision possibly dependant on market prices each year?

#19 form over fixtures. Not always true and has two sides to this.

One side is the Benteke (very difficult fixtures but has form) over Negredo (easy fixtures but bad form).

The opposite side is that dgw36 captained Hazard (MID) instead of Sanchez (tot, sou) since he had some blanks and Arsenal having a patchy away form. Sadly to missed out the other half portion of his points sadly.

It’s a nice list thanks fella.

I’d just like to add I think the most important thing is flexibility and it’s a lesson I’ve consistently got to relearn. I think inflexibility comes out in a number of different ways and causes us all problems.

Too often people back themselves into a corner by over stretching up front and not being able to afford an in form midfielder or going over the top on one particular team and not being able to draft in an in form player from the same team. If it's a one to one swap it’s easy to make, if you have to make 2 changes you’re going to hesitate, if you have to make surgery more often than not you’re not getting that player in and that could be the difference in your entire season.

It's most important at the start of the season - we all agonized on whether to have Aguero and Ibra in our teams this season, those that went with both were right, not just because they both had a blinding start but also if they didn’t we could easily down grade 1 to Costa, Those that maxed out their £100m without Ibra and or/ Aguero had to spend points right from the off to get them in.

My view is you should start with flexibility in mind - have a balanced team, don't fill your bench with the lowest price players (though that one 4.0 defender is probably fine) - keep some value throughout the squad ready for any player(s) to emerge to be within reach whatever team, position or value they are.

Flexibility is also required when it comes to our long thought out and best laid plans. Stubbornness can be a killer – I wont linger on this point because I think its been made many times before.

My final point is that we need to be flexible with our pre – conceptions and this is always alluded to. We are experienced so we base our plans trying to use this advantage and then we stick to them because we believe we know best as we’ve seen it all before – until we’re wondering why those part timers and ghost teams drift past us – for example thinking Costa is going to get that 5th yellow, or away teams wont score many goals on the last day of the season. We sometimes try to be too smart for our own good - I remember a period where people were favouring 3 - 5 - 2 on a basic premise that midfielders get extra points for scoring so logic dictates you have more in midfield than attack so stuck to it- that was looking for a pattern that wasn't there, the simple fact was that teams needed to be sufficiently flexible to accommodate for the fact that midfielders were outscoring and attackers and there were no mid-price forward options, but that will switch back soon - I myself spent far too long in my 3 - 4 - 3 formation because it’s just what I had known was best. If what’s done you well last season is going to pot change it up because no season is the same.

Knowledge from forums, scoutcasts and experience is great but don’t forget your basics – such as form and fixtures – and be flexible in your pre – conceptions.

He has been burned by the aggressiveness of price changes this season IMO. His TV suffered and as a result he had a poor WC (no Kane).

So who here has caught someone in their ML when it looked hopeless? caught up 114 points in two GW's to clinch one of my ML's.. Ended up 14 points ahead, what's even better this player was 531 in the world and 181 points ahead at that point.. Now he did screw it up and panicked using his chips at terrible times but still, blooming exciting that was. 😀

Ditto. Came out on top of work ML, second year running! Caught up about 80 over last 8 or so weeks. He didn't do much wrong except no Sanchez, trusting Costa, Hazard and Alonso in final games and too much Southampton. I led going into this week by 4 but took a hit on the King news.

Congrats to Ben - winning it on the last day must feel pretty sweet! Bet Uwais is pretty gutted however.

I ended up on 374 OR, which i'm definitely happy with and my best result yet, a real maverick season though including a whopping 216 points worth of hits... so I'll probably remember it as the season that could have been so much more!

A few punts too many, and stubbornness at never once having the likes of King, McAuley, Heaton, Eriksen etc, ultimately cost me a shot at winning the thing though I reckon.

Thanks to everyone on here, good giggle as ever. Roll on August! 🙂
