Transfer speculation and a feast of new Members Area statistics took centre-stage in this week’s community discussions, which also considered Fantasy Premier League’s bonus point allocation and the power of shirt sales.

Our members’ table constructors are already getting their teeth into the new information available to them, while our community article and tournament sections assess the latest league positions and transfer targets in the Fantasy competitions taking place over the summer.

The Community Articles

Norwegian top-flight game Eliterserien Fantasy continues this weekend when Gameweek 14’s action gets underway. Niemi dropped by to consider some key transfer targets and players to avoid for this next set of fixtures.

Elsewhere, Giggs Boson was back to offer his analysis of last season’s clean sheets. This excellent article builds on his Hot Topic a year ago and provides a breakdown of where the shut-outs were owned. If you’re a member, it also provides you with a ready-made set of team ratings to enable you to create Giggs Boson’s definitive Fixture Ticker for clean sheets.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Cristiano Ronaldo’s rumoured reunion with Manchester United was among the most eye-catching transfer rumours this week. However, opinion was mixed on whether his mooted return – given he was an essential asset for much of his time in the English top flight – would help or hinder Fantasy managers.

Should he return, his transfer fee, as well as his Fantasy price, is likely to range between the eye-popping and the astronomical. But, pondered ZoumasBloomers, are the transfer fees commanded by football’s ‘galacticos’ justified considering the marketing revenue they can generate?

ZoumasBloomers was back during the week to canvass your views on overrated players, a category that few would place the Portuguese forward in given his stellar career so far.

A more water tight transfer involved the move that brought former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah from Fiorentina to Liverpool. Now that the deal is done, Fantasy managers will face an even trickier task in selecting the best option among their midfield, according to our discussion.

Liverpool players such as Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho were among a raft of midfielders who offered excellent value in the 8m to 8.5m price bracket last season. However, with a hike in value likely for the Brazilian pair, we asked for your views on who next season’s best options will be in this price category.

The issue of price rises was also discussed by Shawcus, who is intrigued to know how Fantasy price-setters decide players’ value.

After his Golden Boot winning campaign, Harry Kane is among those likely to succumb to inflation in 2016/17. But the community has mixed feelings about starting next season with the Spurs striker, according to White Lightning’s hot topic.

An increase in value is also expected for Manchester City midfielder Leroy Sane. But will rotation threaten to curtail interest in the German and the rest of Pep Guardiola’s troops? Kuntheman – Silva has been examining the extent to which the Spaniard likes to freshen up his starting XI. This was a theme also addressed by Ludo later in the week.

According to Witty Pun, focusing on midfielders in a 3-5-2 formation could be key to success next term, with his research on third strikers revealing that the days of 3-4-3 may be over. There was further argument against investing in budget strikers, even if they have a good pre-season, in Wild Rovers canvassing of the best and worst summer bandwagons of all time.

Elsewhere, we revealed a raft of new statistics added to the Members Area armoury, including figures on creating big chances and being tackled – both important factors in calculating FPL bonus points. This prompted us to ask whether FPL has got it right when allocating extra points by penalising players who are targeted by tough tacklers

Among defenders, Harry Maguire could prove a lucrative option next term following his move from Hull City to Leicester City, thinks Mark. However, bonus points may be hard to come by for the towering centre-back after he secured extra points on just two occasions last season, in spite of some resolute rearguard displays and ranking second for shots inside the box among defenders.

Pairing up cheap defenders and goalkeepers was once again a hot topic, with Brighton’s capture of Australian keeper Mat Ryan from Valencia sparking a discussion later in the week on budget match-ups at the back.

Finally, Friday delivered a stickied comment that demands your attention. Following the appointment of Mauricio Pellegrino as Southampton manager, Foozeball offered their in-depth analysis of the Argentinian manager. Given Southampton’s fixtures, Pellegrino’s tactics and team selection look set to be key to our early Fantasy fortunes.

To view all our discussions, please visit our Hot Topics page. We are also still keen to hear from you about how this can be further developed.

The Members Tables

Mr Emre-Can-Pie has been examining wing-backs and attack minded full-backs who completed at least 100 successful passes in the final third of the pitch last season.

To add to the aforementioned Hot Topic on players who get frequently tackled, I’ve created a table to showcase the attackers who struggle to keep hold of the ball and may find themselves missing out on FPL bonus points as a result.

Sticking with the Members Area’s latest statistics, the newly-added ‘big chances created’ figure is the focus of another table I’ve made.

Meanwhile, Giggs Boson returned to scout midfielders who could be due a goal next season after registering a high number of close range efforts but rarely finding the net in 2016/17.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Congratulations to all those taking part in the Fantasy Euro Under 21 FFScout league, which was ranked first in the competition’s league of leagues during the week.

In the Norwegian Eliterserien Fantasy game, Colmans Mustard remains top of the community’s main league, while Dutch Warrors continues to lead the H2H competition.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

I read this earlier today. What was your conclusion on the herd mentality of those who switched Sanchez to Hazard around GW19? Just blind luck that we missed out on Sanchez's West Ham haul?

Hi Virgin - just double checked, you're referring to the example I used in the article. The West Ham haul was GW14 for Sanchez; the Haz haul was GW11. We swapped from Sanchez -> Haz mostly after the Everton performance for Haz.

Def elements of both the herd mentality I detail plus authority bias (the tendency for people to place more emphasis on advice given by those we view as experts in decision making) due to Mark advocating it on the show (quite rightly, as I say!)

As I say in the long article, the point is that it was UNlucky if you swapped as an involved FPL manager. The stats pointed to Haz dominating in the league; instead, we saw Haz drying up and Sanchez explode.

Hope that helps - in the long article I (try to at least) explain this in detail 😀

I going Eriksen over Alli. I think he has the edge in terms of hitting double figures consistently. His stats are impossible to ignore and he keeps beating his score from previous seasons.

It's impossible to say Alli won't do well, but I think Eriksen has the edge in terms of week-in, week-out consistency. He seems to get to 10 points much more easily than other mids.

I think Eriksen looks like the better player than Alli whenever Son is in the team. The downside to Eriksen is that he abuses the pitch size of WHL more than Alli/Son, so I'm a bit hesitant to go with a Spurs midfielder from the start.

I was a big proponent of the treble Spurs attack last season but i was not convinced by their shocking Wembley form. The possible price of Spurs assets being very high in the coming season i might not be willing to take the chance.

I'd like to see how we approach this. Fullbacks can help largely to break these teams down (Spurs and Chelsea were the best at it, City will be great at it next season). Our fullbacks are kak.

Yeah, will be interesting to see what Klopp comes up with .. not very original but why not a 343 and convert one or more of our mids to wingbacks. A quality left footed attacking fullback would be a better solution ... though Milner did okay.

Kompany just doesn't play consistently enough otherwise I'd have him.

              de Gea; Azpilicueta-Alderweireld-van Dijk-Rose; Kante-Wanyama-Coutinho/KDB; Sanchez-Aguero-Hazard.

We have a long history in this country of younger people not bothering to vote and as a result have become easy pickings for the Conservatives who have feathered the nests of the older voters who are their core support.

Corbyn found a way of unlocking the political conscience of the young at the last election and it's a all that just keeps rolling.

Today he turned up at Glastonbury to address the crowds to great applause and support.

                    Pffft. Not any more.

The Liberal democrats were the last party to appeal to the young by promising to scrap tuition fees if the got into power....and then a few weeks later when they did get into power they actually tripled tuition fees.

Like I said the young have been shafted in this country for many years.

If he never does anything else he will have provided a platform for others to build on, wether they do or not is questionable, but he's driven the left a long way down the road these past few weeks.

It is great to see young people taking a interest in politics and exercising their right to vote.

The sooner they elect that old fart into no.10 the better because then they will realize that he is a crackpot and will vote tory for the rest of their lives.

That link won't show for me.

My middle son is 18 and suddenly he and his friends are really engaged. Whether Corbyn makes a good leader or not isn't really that important...what us important is that he's woken a generation up.

Millions of young people engaged in politics and voting means whoever seeks power has to give them something to vote for. That's good for young people in the long run and a job well done by Corbyn...even if he does nothing else...

If he did become PM I'd hope he'd concentrate on what matters i.e. the NHS, housing and education rather than the things which aren't that important like renationalisation of the rail etc.

People say he'd be a disaster as PM but Cameron and May have overseen a decline in the NHS, a massive rise in homelessness, a botched war in Libya, furthering arms sales to the Saudis and bloody Brexit. That sounds like disaster to me already.

I listened to "Talksport" today debating wether Liverpool was a big club or not.

What a ridiculous argument and debate IMO...of course they are.

What makes a big club IMO is the relationship between the club and the Town/City they represent, Liverpool as a City is utterly obsessed with both of Liverpool and Everton, they're the life blood of the city. Newcastle is the same.

A big club isn't measured by the trophies won or transfer fees paid but by the fact that virtually the whole City they belong to are engaged with their clubs.

So a few days ago I go to eject my FIFA 17 disc from my Xbox One, and it makes the noise and nothing comes out. I repeatedly spam the button, and nothing happens.

So I look up how to fix it, and there's a method that can be done with an Allan Key or a paper clip. I spend hours trying this method and it doesn't work. I restart the console a hundred times, nothing happens. I decide to take it apart, and I start doing it before getting stuck, and I put it all back together. I even try a method where you put another disc in halfway, and then pull it out to mess with the disc tray and force it to spit out everything in it. Still doesn't work.

Out of frustration, I decide not to play on my Xbox for a while after that, especially because it's likely that I destroyed the disc with all of my methods. Today I decide to turn on my Xbox and try FIFA, just to see if at least the disc is working and I can play this game for eternity...and the screen pops up with an error message asking where the disc is. So I'm like, "Well I'm screwed, I've obviously destroyed it." But then something comes to me, and I start frantically searching through my game cases...and there's FIFA 17, nice and neat, inside a Halo 5 case.

This sort of thing has to only happen to me, right?

Lol just started listening to a recent episode just now. Cundy described Salah as a poor man's Pedro.

While that may or may not be unfair, actually he has a good point about why on earth Coutinho should be moved deeper when he's way better than Salah

This, as the most forward of the midfield three he could be immense, he'll now have the players in front of him to pass to and play those threaded balls he loves, he pulls the strings for everything we do and he really battles in midfield too which is what makes him a class above anyone else, he really gets stuck in and puts himself about.

I'd say Salah is better than Pedro, Pedro is an okay player but his all round game doesn't match up with Salah's, he doesn't have the intelligence or nous Salah has.

As it seems to be music night.

I can't be bothered to tell the whole story but in 1977 (ish) after a gig by Motörhead in Blackburn I found myself at a table with Lemmy and Animal whilst I was drinking a pint of bitter shandy.

    How wrong was that?

No I don't....or maybe I would if I heard it. I saw them twice at king George's Hall. My cousin was the one they were talking to at the table (five years older than me) I was just a pathetic child with his bitter shandy...

A fictional team OK here we go then all players are fictional

              GK - Donkey Kong
Def - Mike Ehrmantraut - Travis Bickle - Dutch (Predator
              Mid - Billy Whizz - Bryan Robson - Gollum/Smeagol - Harry Potter
Fwd - The Joker - Jessica Rabbit - James Bond

As you can see I favour the 4-3-3 formation

Pep Guardiola wants to bring four full-backs to Manchester City this summer, according to the Star on Sunday.

The City boss has identified Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, Juventus’ Dani Alves, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Monaco’s Benjamin Mendy.

The Star claim Guardiola’s spending spree will set City back a staggering £110m, necessary outlay given the departures of Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta’s earlier this summer.

Well he did get rid of all the full-backs and so does need 4. Not sure Walker's worth the big bucks, but if City can sort out their defensive problems they ought to be favourites for the Premiership and good for a serious punt at the Champions League.

Double or triple up is alright imo. Cover is the biggest nonsense in FPL. You either have the right player or you don't. No point in taking a player you don't believe in.

I like the idea of cover of a good few teams to start while avoiding those with bad fixtures eg Everton, Stoke

Would personally like Arsenal,Spurs,City,United,Pool cover to start the season. No point picking useless players as cover though. Might have to neglect some teams at the start.

I don't accept the concept of cover, but at the start of the season I'd avoid tripling up until I have a better idea of settled first XIs. Last season I had 3 from Chelsea for most of the season and 3 from Spurs after they exited Europe.

I'll naturally seek to have cover from a variety of teams at the beginning, but that's mostly because I struggle to see a nailed on eleven for City and United. Also there hasn't a couple of clear top teams the last few seasons, making it difficult to commit hard for a team from the beginning. I'm expecting big price hikes for most of the top 6 teams this season, which will make it difficult to double up offensively on anyone.
