This evening we roll out the fourth in our series of player list articles focusing on the Fantasy Premier League game.

Having assessed the goalkeepers, budget defenders and mid-price defenders, we now turn our attention to the backline options in the top bracket – costing 6.0 and over.

Certainly, for this sort of outlay, you would expect more than just the possibility of clean sheet returns, with added goal threat and an ability to bring in bonus points also major factors to consider.

In addition, rarely – if ever – would you wish to bench such a costly pick. Rotation is therefore off the table at this price point.

While many Fantasy managers will understandably be keen to seek out budget backline options, there is still potential value to be had in the more expensive bracket.

Last season, the three top scoring defenders in FPL, Chelsea trio Gary Cahill, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, all recorded at least 170 points – only eight midfielders and five forwards achieved such a feat.

With that in mind, and with the proliferation of wing-backs throughout the Premier League, the Premium defenders are enjoying something of a renaissance, with many FPL managers considering abandoning the accepted 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 tactic to start the season with a four-man backline.

Inevitably, we have to pay attention to fixtures when investing heavily in a defender.

Assessing the opening schedules, Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia has to be our among our early favoured options.

More expensive than team-mate Eric Bailly (6.5 to 6.0), the Ecuadorian faces just one of last year’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks (WHM swa LEI sto EVE sot CRY liv hud) and was utilised as a wing-back in the recent friendly win over LA Galaxy.

Valencia supplied 41 successful crosses – third among FPL defenders – and also registered 31 key passes, yet brought home a mere three assists.

Those numbers underline that he offers the greatest upside in a defence that chalked up 16 shut-outs in their first season under Jose Mourinho.

So far, though, only 6.5% have chosen to recruit Valencia, with David De Gea (27.3%) and Victor Lindelof (13.5%) proving far more popular at 5.5 apiece.

Over in the blue half of Manchester, City also have a kind opening batch of fixtures – Pep Guardiola’s side host Everton, Crystal Palace, Stoke City and Burnley and also travel to Brighton, Bournemouth, Watford and West Brom in the first 10 Gameweeks.

However, Vincent Kompany’s (6.0) ability to steer clear of injury is a major factor in our assessment of their defensive potential.

The Belgian played all but 14 minutes of the final eight fixtures of 2016/17 and delivered three goals, five clean sheets and six bonus points. If Pep Guardiola prioritises him for domestic matches to manage his fitness, we are confident that Kompany can eclipse new arrivals Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy (both 6.5) as the most profitable route into City’s backline.

Granted, Walker’s total of six assists was more than any other defender last term, but it remains to be seen if he’s employed in a wing-back role by Pep Guardiola.

Nonetheless, over 19.1% have snapped up Walker, while Mendy also has to be a consideration.

As our recent Scout Report revealed, Mendy’s delivery from the left flank was lauded at Monaco, and he has already talked up his ability to provide goals on his arrival at the Etihad.

However, with Mendy currently nursing an injury and with fellow new signing Danilo – priced at 5.5 – available as a rotation option, City’s full-backs both look vulnerable whereas Kompany surely plays when fit.

Six favourable matches (new BUR SWA whm hud BOU) in the first eight also strengthen Spurs’ chances of providing early returns.

Ultimately, though, Walker’s departure diminishes the appeal of his premium-priced former defensive team-mates Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld (both 6.0) along with Danny Rose (6.5), who remains an ongoing doubt with a long-term knee complaint.

Instead, the Walker transfer makes the 5.5-priced Kieran Tripper an almost irresistible prospect for points, both from clean sheets and assists.

Over 19.9% have now turned to the former Burnley man, who claimed five assists in just 12 outings last term. Meanwhile, Spurs recorded 17 clean sheets and conceded fewer goals (26) than any side in 2016/17.

It’s difficult to look beyond Trippier while Spurs continue to stall in strengthening in his position.

Across north London, having failed to claim a Champions League spot, many anticipate that Arsene Wenger will prioritise the Premier League and rest his Arsenal regulars when Europa League matches come around.

This could be good news for the Gunners’ defence as they seek to improve upon last season’s 13 clean sheets – down from 18 in 2015/16.

Laurent Koscielny, Hector Bellerin and Sead Kolasinac all come in at 6.0 apiece, with Bellerin currently the most popular of the three at 13.8% ownership.

Yet the Spaniard is arguably the least promising pick at present as he faces a battle with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the right wing-back berth in Arsene Wenger’s new 3-4-2-1 formation.

Indeed, Bellerin himself has recently acknowledged how Arsenal’s new system has damaged the security of his starting role.

With Koscielny suspended for the first two Gameweeks, we are currently favouring Kolasinac – who scored three goals and five assists for Schalke last season – to establish himself as the next must-have wing-back.

There are cheaper alternatives to consider at the Emirates, though, with Nacho Monreal and Shkodran Mustafi at 5.5 apiece. The latter’s 20 headed efforts on goal was ranked top for FPL defenders in 2016/17.

Arsenal’s first five home clashes (LEI BOU WBA BHA SWA) look conducive to early investment, as are trips to Stoke City and Watford in the first 10 Gameweeks.

Staying in London, Chelsea boast as many as six defenders in the premium price bracket – somewhat surprising given that they conceded more goals (33) and earned fewer clean sheets (16) than both Spurs and Man United.

When assessing their prospects this time round, the degree of rotation may ultimately determine the most secure targets now that Conte has the Champions League to consider.

It’s also worth noting that only three of the champions’ 16 shut-outs came in the final 16 Gameweeks, suggesting that the cracks were appearing in their 3-4-3 formation.

If we can discount the threat of rotation, Marcos Alonso has to be the stand-out Chelsea candidate even though he’s the most expensive defender on offer at 7.0.

The statistics highlight why.

The former Fiorentina man ranked top for shots (46), efforts in the box (25) and attempts on target (16) for defenders on his way to averaging 5.7 points per match (ppm).

While Chelsea have coveted the services of Alex Sandro from Juventus, Alonso’s role at left wing-back currently looks uncontested. If it stays that way, then he has to remain worthy of the investment with Chelsea’s testing early fixtures the only caveat (BUR tot EVE lei ARS stk MCI).

Cesar Azpilicueta (bonus potential), Gary Cahill (six goals last season) and wing-back Victor Moses – now listed as a defender – all set you back £6.5m and have their upsides.

But it’s David Luiz who is the most popular defender in the FPL game, with 21.4% ownership.

Along with new arrival Antonio Rudiger, the Brazilian is the cheapest Chelsea backline member at £6.0m. Despite scoring once last year, he placed sixth for shots (31) among defenders and could yet prove a stronger value option.

Luiz clearly has merits, but given Chelsea’s early schedule, we may need attacking returns from our Blues defender to eke out early value. Alonso is clearly the most likely to offer that.

Reclassified as a defender this time around, Liverpool’s James Milner has penalty-kick duties to strengthen his appeal as a fire-and-forget option.

Priced at 6.5, at least 1.0 more than any of Jurgen Klopp’s defensive regulars, Milner netted seven times from the spot in 2016/17 and has already converted a penalty in pre-season.

In terms of creativity, Milner boasts a considerable upside – he supplied more key passes (56) and more successful crosses (53) than any defender last season.

Despite earning just 12 clean sheets last term, he would have claimed third spot in the FPL defender listings if classified as a defender.

Essentially, then, like Chelsea’s Alonso, Milner could play huge part in our seasons if he can avoid rotation, though the acquisition of Andrew Robertson (5.0) clearly makes that unlikely.

Milner is currently troubled by a thigh injury which will see him possibly miss Liverpool’s next two friendly encounters. While we expect him to be fit and start as the Reds’ first choice left-back, we are also anticipating that Robertson will go on to make between six-10 starts as Klopp perhaps rotates around European fixtures.

Elsewhere on Merseyside, Everton pair Leighton Baines (6.0) and the injured Seamus Coleman (6.5) also boast lofty price tags.

With Coleman stuck on the sidelines and the Toffees set to face Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Man United in the first five, many will be side-stepping their defensive regulars until the schedules smiles on them from Gameweek 6.

At that point, the likes of Michael Keane (5.5) and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (5.0) look likely to emerge as routes into a rearguard which claimed 13 shut-outs in 2016/17.

Why does it sometimes tell me to bench a player who will not be one of the lowest scorers of the week?

    Example:
Week 2, says to bench Foster (3.5) over Elliot (3.1)
Week 2, says to bench Alsonso (2.6) over Dummett (2.0)

Blimey. The level of FFS comments has really reached the nadir if someone is saying that "no-one takes points per £1m seriously".

Captaincy aside (and even that is related), points per £1m budget is the very core of the game.

So, so much about "which player". So, so little about game mechanics and underlying strategies. It's a shame really. 🙁

Yes, but do you realise that last season for the first time ever (as far as my research can go) the very top FPL managers actually achieved a better average ppg from GKs than they did from defenders?

GK is a more important position than it once was for FPL. The better BPS value given to saves now has made a significant difference. In addition the percentage of clean sheets has been falling steadily for 4 or 5 seasons now and that affects defenders more than GKs because GKs have save points even when the CS goes whereas defenders only have the vague (and usually over-estimated) hope of attacking points.

Posted this earlier. It's kind of basic, but goalkeepers are definitely priced more favourable this year.

            http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/07/27/fpl-player-list-analysis-premium-defenders/?hc_page=7#hc_comment_15964107

For as long as I remember, the staple tactic has been to go cheap with your gk and get an attacking defender, but FPL appear to have baselined each team's defence (4.5m across the board for promoted sides, 5m for mid table sides, 5.5m for top 6 sides), and then added a premium to each defender for their potential attacking returns.

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 4 months ago

Yep. The compression of GK prices with the highest at 5.5m has also had an effect.

Heaton was 2nd best GK in 2014/15 (by 1 point) and best last season. In between he was in the Championship. Yet he's 5.0m. It's almost as if FPL are saying that his performance over his last 2 FPL seasons was an accident, even though 150 points and then 149 points in those 2 seasons shows remarkable consistency. If people could get 150 points from a 5m midfielder they'd be over the moon.

I'm not saying he's the best or only pick but it kind of makes the point about the importance of the GK slot(s).

              1. Twisted Saltergater

                8 years, 4 months ago

Heaton is an interesting one as they've acknowledged he's not and shouldn't be bargain basement, but there must be a nod to Keane leaving and whether Burnley will survive another season. As we know with Foster, it only takes a relatively defensive team to concede one regularly for his weekly points to read 2, 2, 2.

What is welcoming is that compression of the top end. Instead of DDG and Courtois being 6m, they've been priced inline with 5.5m defenders, thus increasing their PPM value and attractiveness.

I had 'Jak & 3.9', 7.8, for a good run, why did I buy Pick and bench Jak's pen save? Sigh... it does work, w/o rotation.

Anyone besides Random Name like to comment on my current team?

    Fabianski (Elliot)
    Kompany - Kolasinac - Trippier - Bertrand - Cedric
De Bruyne - Redmond (RLC, T. Carroll, Cork)
    Kane - Lacazette - Jesus

Just lost Alonso and Lukaku to fund Chalobah > Redmond (and Kompany). Improvement? If Redmond doesn't look favoured by GW1, I'll switch back or rethink.

I love Willian, but I don't want to plan a transfer/WC for GW2-5 ish, and his fixtures help me justify the decision to 'risk' going without him.

        Besides a 6.0 def to a 4.0 gives me 2.0 to udgrade Cork to a 6.5 not a Willian, I'm afraid.

I would avoid kolasinac. He is such a physical player and can't fit in LWB imo. Should be monitored if he plays there. Personally think he is not that good playing with ball and going forward.
Bellerin is much better choice if he is nailed.

Doesn't make sense to me sorry. He's a good winger. I only know from youtube, but the evidence is there. I would probably have both Bellering and Kolasinac if Bellerin were nailed, but he isn't and can't be until he's played a string of games this season (unless Ox leaves or is injured).

Could be brilliant. But an awful lot depends on lacazette, Jesus and redmond to meet /exceed expectations. Personally I don't think I would do it.

As soon as Lacazette and Jesus score in preseason, you'll change your mind, and the next time Lukaku blanks it'll be time to ship. We're all fickle here. Trying to stick with what I know from outside preseason and only let it guide how nailed players might be. What do you think of the previous version (I had for about a week)?

        Fabianski (Elliot)
        ALONSO - Kolasinac - Trippier - Bertrand - Cedric
De Bruyne - Loftus-Cheek (T. Carroll, Cork, CHALOBAH)
        Kane - Lacazette - LUKAKU

Could still do Kaku to Jesus and Bertrand to Milner. I'm not so worried about ownership, but about goals, and Lukaku isn't certain to be worth the extra money in my book.

I think I like Jesus over lacazette and I'm on the fence about lukaku. I'm actually thinking of going opposite formation and loading up the midfield with kdb, Erikson, salah/cout, willian, and then Kane plus 2 cheaper Fs like Austin and gayle.

Fair enough. Those 9.0-10.0 mids are very desirable indeed. But I do feel that Laca and Jesus are worth the extra. I'm actually less sure about Jesus. I think people are reading too much into Laca's positioning in preseason. I suppose a lot depends on Sanchez though

Points potential on paper is good. That's all guess work at this stage though and a lottery early doors. More important to me is flexibility to adapt to form and you've got very little with this.

      1. Deulofail
        • 9 Years

If I go back to my previous lineup (above), I have the flexibility of Alonso > any defender, and Lukaku > any forward. I think flexibility is a little overrated/underdefined, since we're always scrambling to get this week's new thing, and it's very rare that next week's hot think was the same as the last anyway. Add to that that there's no guarantee that your flexibility approach doesn't leave you 0.5 short of the play that's hot property, and it seems like building a team for points is gaining validity.

One is getting the players that have just gotten points, assuming past points = future points.
The other is using what we see watching the football to make informed predictions about the future. (Unlike pre gw1 where it is a lot less informed).
When I say form I mean relevant real life form not recent fpl points.

I'm running a 5-2-3 myself; your double midfield pivot is too weak. I've got a 8m/7m combo. I've done that by spending a little less on the front 3 than you.

      1. Deulofail

Can you explain to me what you actually mean by the midfield 2 is too weak? What does 'weak' really mean here, and why is that a bad thing, given that the money then goes elsewhere in the team.

I don't see any player under 7m as being sufficiently prolific or sustainable. Redmond will get you the odd haul but mostly 2-3 points.

Andy I feel the same about 7-8m defenders, so I guess much approach fits my beliefs about the player values. I'm just lucky that my beliefs allow my to spread more money elsewhere. Although tbf, 8+7 is actually more than I've spent on my double pivot! But my cheap player(s) let's me go big on the other player.

Well yes, I agree that since our formation is inflexible (can't drop a defender, 3 rubbish midfielders on the bench), we do need maximum flexibility to play free transfers. By having premium defenders (I've got Alonso, 2x6m and 2x5.5m) we can easily change one defender for another. I've also got Kane/Kaku up top which means I can drop one for any striker in the game. My liitation is that at the moment I can't afford a midfielder over 8m although I feel there re plenty of good options in the 7-8m bracket. That can change of I switch Kane or Kaku for a cheaper striker, of course.

I'm sure we'll both tinker plenty before kick-off, but it will be good to compare how our teams get on relative to one another.

Information still comes in week-by-week, and the flexibility approach assumes you can use this information to make judgements. I'm saying the new information each week is contractictory because it's so variable with the samll sample size at the start of the season. So may as well make decisions based on knowledge we already have (like form from last season).

Okay, but i think that as there are quite a few viable options at 7m, if my 7m pick (Zaha) doesn't fire, I can easily switch him with my 1FT, so there is greater flexibility there.

            1. Deulofail

To Ramsey or a Saints mid. Otherwise player who's probably going to score much fewer points from the budget category.

I think I have enough on my bench (and not too many risks) to wait till GW3 for 2FT, and see if I want to use both then (who knows maybe a hit, given that plenty of people will be hitting anyway)

And what's to say Zaha won't haul the following week. You're forcing yourself to chase points if you're using 1 or 2 performances to decide your transefs in a particular price category. Looking for value that you can't guarantee is there, in my view.

Wherease - in my view - I can pretty much guarantee that my defence is good value, and I personally thing my premium options are too. Only one slot I should be nervous about.

That assumes you only make decisions based on information from the last week. Which would be very strange. In reality as each week passes we get more and more and better quality predictive information.
This has gotten very philosophical lol trig might write a book on it 😛

I agree mate use what you have, form from last season and fixture difficulty. Just saying the information you gather once footy is being played is much more predictive.

            1. Deulofail
              • 9 Years
              8 years, 4 months ago

Much more predictive than nothing, I agree. But still not very powerful, I don't think.

And if you're picking players because there are lots of players at that price point rather than because you think they are good value themselves (and in the context of the money spend in the whole team), then I think that's...an interesting tactic, one that's got legs (and definitely has legs on this site), but it's certainly not definitely the best way, as far as I can see.

Anyway, thanks for not saying I was an idiot for going 523 🙂

Let me clarify my thoughts on this. I was specifically focusing on the 7m midfield price-point here, nothing else. I feel that there are a number of good options there, and all of them, for me, are effectively far more than 0.5m better than the 6.5 options. For me it's a chasm. Anyone at 6.5 and down can be expected to average 2-3 points - yes a small group of exceptions will emerge and bandwagons will form, but pre-season we can't predict who they'll be. Whereas the 7m+ lot are known, reliable and should bag goals or assists every 2 weeks.

Not sure who all these 7m players are. You can switch from Zaha to Ramsey, and that's about it? Maybe Lanzini and Arnautonic? Willian would be a risk to switch to after GW1 unless Hazard's injury is extended.

Ramsey, Fab & Willian, Arnie & Lanzini, Zaha. Think that's enough to jump from one to another.

                      8 years, 4 months ago

Okay fair enough. I wouldn't personally think that Fab or Willian are a good idea in the first 5 weeks or so, since we won't know if they're nailed (Conte could switch tactics anytime near the start, and the rotating/resting patterns of Fab may not be evident/established yet). And Willian will likely be involved even less than Fab once Hazard's back (GW2-GW5? Who knows?). So for me that leaves 3 players, and I wouldn't want to bet that any of them will show themselves to be great options.

However I will say that I don't see a chasm at all. Redmond for me may be worth 7m+ given his fixtures. But aside from inflated value from fixtures, I see a gentle slop down. Though if sub 7.0 mids only collect 2-3 points, then I may as well get 4.5 to do that for me. I don't see 7m mids PPG being anywhere near the 9.0-10.0 mids, and I think the money saved on 4.5 mids lets me cover the difference between Zaha and 2-3 PPG-and then some (with KDB + 0.5). Plus I get to choose which 4.5 to play whcih my increase my PPG from 2-3 to 3 or something! haha

Anyway, sorry that was long and boring. I'm off to bed now.Goodnight!

Calling out Southampton Fans... May be too early in pre-season to tell but how do you expect you midfield to line up next season.

I saw a rumour Gabbiadini could play attacking left side supporting Austin up top which would give us all a good third striker option with them cracking fixtures and his good price £££.

I have a slot saved for a Southampton midfielder - currently on Tadic as I think he under performed last year and expect more from him this year. I think Tadic just edges it over Redmond for me. My major question and an area I need some help with is Boufal. Big money signing, didnt hit the ground running but can we expect him to kick on this year. Showed some class with the odd goal last year but can he produce this regurlarly?

Id love to save the 0.5 by downgrading Tadic to Boufal but cant bring myself to do it without some major backing from Southampton fans..

I'd rather have 2 defensive slots for Soton players than doubling on attack.

I dont actually have a Southampton striker at the moment.... but if Austin bangs a few in then I can see myself jumping on him!

Currently only have Cedric and Tadic...

      Here are your options:

Cedric (or whoever his understudy is if he doesn't make GW1)
      Bertrand
Austin (if it looks like he's going to play)

      Don't worry about the rest

No room for Tadic or Redmond (or Boufal)

Do you not think that is a bad move with the good fixtures?

I can see doubling up on the defenders but this will encourage me to be playing 433 not 343 which im not too sure about!

Competition is a factor. He's played for Madrid and in the CL, course he's proven. Just not world class, and that's the level Madrid operate at.

Danilo is a better fullback than walker IMO. I back him to win the job, but even then Mendy may not be fit to start the season and Danilo played LB in their friendly vs Madrid.

    Couple reasons to get RLC:

-Townsend playing as right wing back in pre-season means a spot further forward opens up
-Cabaye is getting older and is heavily linked with a move to Marseille
-Puncheon also getting older & has really struggled of late (many captains have sat on the bench)
-RLC is versatile and can fit in just about anywhere (defensive, box to box, front 3)

Why do people bid for things on eBay then not pay or even bother to respond when you email them?

Why friggin bid if you have no intention of paying for the goods?

You are. Some guy was successful bidding for my epos speakers on Sunday night. Still no payment. Sent him two messages but no response to either.

Have opened it up in Resolution Centre now and he can get some negative feedback once the case is closed.

But why bid for something you have no intention of buying and no desire to even communicate with the person selling the item?

Had a few issues in the past myself selling some mobiles. Ebay don't seem to be able to enforce it if someone bids. Pathetic really considering how long you wait to try and sell something.
