Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

    Foster / Heaton

    Danilo / Dawson / Pied / Mee / Trippier

KDB / Ramsey / Carrol / Mkhitarian / Ward Prowse

    Rashford / Kane / Jesus

I'm taking a few risks with nailed on starters but there's a few differentials already in there I reckon. What do you think folks? Cheers

Way too many risks for the start of the season imo.

Ashford looks good but is a risk, as is Mkhi although I like that punt.

Ramsey is too punty as he's often deep.

Mkhitarian has had a reasonable pre season and I barely see him in any RMTs. I think he'll do well this season

    RMT please

    Foster
    Trippier Bertrand Kolasinac Lindelöf
    De Bruyne Willian Zaha
    Kane Lukaku Chicharito

    Elliot Carroll Loftus-Cheek Hudson

    1mil ITB

    Thoughts?

I see Kane, Lukaku and De Bruyne as essentials. The rest of my squad I tried to balance.

I kept 1mil in case I need to replace or upgrade any players should they not be starters. I'm only worried about Lindelöf for now. If my starting 11 is nailed, I may look at upgrading Foster to De Gea, upgrading Lindelöf to a premium wingback, or upgrading Willian/Zaha to Pogba/Mkhitaryan should they hit the ground running given their fixtures. Alternatively the 1mil could also help with getting any early in-form players.

Lindelof is iffy to start gw1. I would go Foster to DDG and Lindelof to Dawson.

Personally don't like Chicharito for the first 2 gw's. I would use .5 to get Defoe since you have Zaha. Alternatively downgrade to Gayle/Austin and upgrade Zaha to Pogba.

People pay more for a mid that scored 6 goals last season than one that scored 18, because they already have Kane 🙂

    Kane/ Lukaku (Quaner)

    1. Boniouk

Avoid Rangel. High % ownership so *if* he doesn't play, he will get sold off by lots of people and price will drop. Pick a lower owned 4.0.

Ramsey... i'm tempted by him if Sanchez leaves, but if not, I'm not sure he will feature much? He's been coming on for Xhaka around 70 mins in during pre season.

You could sell Salah who is a bit of a punt, replace with someone cheaper with favourable fixtures like Tadic/Redmond or Phillips or Zaha. That would free up 2m ish.

    Hi guys!

So I've got a couple concerns about my team and no clue as to how to remedy them (if they need remedying at all!)

    1) I've got too much money sitting on the bench (and then where to spend any money I gain by cutting down on my sub prices)
    2) I've got three Spurs players but I can't work out which (if any) to get rid of

This is what I've got at the moment (after a load of chopping and changing)

    £0.0 ITB

    Foster (Elliot)
    Daniels, Luiz, Trippier (Cedric, Rangel)
    Eriksen, KDB, Willian, Coutinho (RLC)
    Austin, Kane, Chicharito

So what do you guys think? Cheers in advance!

    Am I insane for contemplating a 4-3-3-?

Amazing what going Kaneless can get in midfield.

Keep an eye on Coutinho transfer moves....looks solid though - apart from Blind....huge rotation risk. I think for security you need to spend more for a Man Utd def.

  14. Witty Pun: Not good at this…

    8 years, 5 months ago

Jonty, I think one thing to consider currently is the dearth of third strikers without caveats. Of all of them, Benteke and Defoe are the ones I'd be most comfortable with-even Firmino is suspect, as I have no doubts the Pool mids will do better than him this season. Everyone below them has issues - Soton strikers not nailed, Chicharito bad fixtures to start with, etc. I would suggest going for JWP who also gets CS points in a 3-5-2 and the money allows you to upgrade Foster to De Gea...

    1. J0E
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

      • 16 Years

I may well switch to a 3-5-2 but that relies on there being a 4.5 striker who plays - we could do that last season with Diomande and Anichebe but that player hasn't emerged yet. That would mean benching more than 4.5....and currently Carroll offers better chance of retaining value in mid.

As soon as a 4.5 striker emerges who actually plays I'll consider 3-5-2 definitely.

II think its okay. Coutinho may leave and i wouldn't double up on liverpool anyway, so a plan B may be necessary.

I like the bottle to go with Ince and i think JWP is a gem for this year.

I think Kane will start slow like previous 2 seasons, but he has high ownership and i may even be wrong.

I would only worry about the bench if you are not planning on using your wildcard early. I also have a weak bench but i am planning on wild-carding in week 3.

Nice team. Looks fairly balanced - I'd be tempted to spend that 0.5 in defence though. You can always downgrade later.
      Maybe Yoshida --> Betrand
      Or Stones --> Kompany
Or better still Stones --> Bailly for that Utd defensive coverage.
I personally am going have toyed with City defenders, but am going to take a lot of winning over after last season.

Thanks for comment! I thik Stones could be good. He has netted twice and one assist in pre-season, but I agree in what you say about City-defenders. Whas thinking of upgrading Benteke to Firminio after GW1, but maybe I´ll spend that 0,5 in defence instead.

    A) Mane Aké Ritchie/6.0 Mid
    B) Salah Francis Willian

B would have me rotating one of Yedlin/Francis each week.

Im using the sun and the telegraph fantasy football which don't require a bench

I would scrap stones and Austin for a 4.5 forward and walker or another wing back. I would also be tempted to play 442 as elite defenders outscore mid-price midfielders and bad strikers

    Any thoughts please or changes:

Have 0.5 in bank. Might use to change one of the 4.5 defenders to Zabaleta
    Week 2.

    De Gea
    Trippier. Yoshida. Ake
    Salah. De Bryne. Fabregas. Chadli
    Jesus. Lukaku. Ilhenacho

    Subs: Elliott. Carroll. Prodl. Hegazi

    RMT please

    Foster (Elliot)
    Yoshida Davies Stones (Mee Smith)
    KDB Salah Zaha Willian (Carroll)
    Lukaku Kane Abraham

Considering including Fosu-Mensah as well but unsure if he is nailed on, thoughts on that would also be appreciated.

    Please give me some feedback

    Foster
    Valencia Kompany Bertrand
    Alli KDB Zaha Willian
    Kaku Firmino Gabbiadini

    Elliot, TC, Mee, Brad Smith

I feel United will keep a decent amount of CS to start the season with so Valencia might be worth it.

As the article says this is aimed at sparking discussion and the main aim of this thread is for you to share your RMTs and give advice.

I do hope though that some of the issues in this article do chime with your own ahead of GWK 1.

I'm canvassing the moderator team now in the search of someone who favours a heavy hitting frontline or a four at the back formation. All being well we should be able to do a follow up article with that team as well in the run up to the season's start.

I like the Stones pick, although I think he's overrated as a player he'll most probably play and is a cheap route in. I currently have Alonso, regardless of Chelsea's fixtures I'm struggling to put a team together without him in there.

I like J Rod for the cheap striker just because of his goals and assists per minute last year but Charlie Austin is a good shout so long as he nails down the position.

KDB looks a brilliant assetsasset but is there a reason you'd not even consider Aguero for your Man City coverage?

Like it aside from Stones. Much prefer Betrand for the better fixtures, attacking potential, nailed-on-ness and arguably better defence

The more people who ignore Stones - the better he becomes as a punt. 🙂

😀 It just seems so un-dullard. And quite frankly bordering on risky. 3-5-2 has happened pre-season, sure. But I don't think that gives us any indication at all what Pep will start with early doors. And even if it does, Fernandinho as a RCB to accommodate Yaya in midfield seems a very Pep move

Don't like the first two fixtures. Think he'll do ok for his price if they don't sign another. On the whole though I think Brighton will struggle for goals - that's why I've gone for a cheap bit of everything player like Suttner.

IMO you could easily have done a fifth mid like JWP, downgraded Austin to a cheapo, and upgraded your goalies to DDG and Hart. What do you think, Jonty?
