The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead KolaŔinac

We’ll start with Sead KolaÅ”inac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked KolaÅ”inac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon KolaÅ”inac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that KolaÅ”inac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, KolaÅ”inac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for KolaŔinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even KolaÅ”inac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

KolaÅ”inac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to KolaÅ”inac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Ɩzil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

Think I've finally settled on my side for GW1. Some thoughts would be more than appreciated:

    Foster/Elliott
    Stones, Ake, Bertrand (Suttner, Mee)
    KDB, Mane, Zaha, RLC, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Gabbi

All I want is to have at the start of the season is a solid team of 10 outfield players who are all capable of scoring assisting at a pretty decent level for each .... and for that to include defenders who have a good chance of CS ... and 2 rotating keepers who will have plenty of save and bap chances available ... If I can get that, with big 6 attack cover, then I don't particularly need to rely on a certain individual starting the season well ... Is that too much to ask?

Have you watched much of Mayweather over the years?
Or do you understand the difference in punching techniques in these sports?
Boxers can generate power in really short distances using technique.
MMA punches are generally what boxers call "arm punches".
McGregor might seem powerful in MMA, but put big gloves on and the punches will weaken a lot.
Then, remember in MMA a punch is just a means of opening an opponent up for the headlocks trips and grappling and hitting on the floor etc.
In boxing, he'll only have the punch. Mayweather isn't a big puncher but I suspect McGregor's punching will be about that level at best.
Far better boxers and far bigger punchers have fought Mayweather and either, not landed cleanly, or weren't able to KO him.
It's not to say McGregor can't fight. In a general street fight, I bet he'd win easy.
But this isn't "fighting", its boxing. Its actually a sport and a skill. You can't just learn it overnight because you've done something similar before

I'm a huge fan of both sports. Have trained in both and followed them closely. Boxing doesn't need any help embarrassing itself. 90% of boxing fights are a complete waste of time padding out records and jumping through hoops. Don't even get me started on the corruption, or the deaths in the ring when fighters aren't protected. Despite all of that nothing gets my juices flowing like a canelo v golovkin super fight

Oddly that fight to me isn't that interesting.
Golovkin has basically made a long career out of fighting very poor opponents in my view.
Other than a bloated up Kell Brook.
He totally ducked Ward when he called him out.
GGG has basically never taken a slight risk until this, a guy who got outclassed easily by a naturally smaller Mayweather

But styles make fights. Ggg has the perfect style to beat canelo. If he stays mobile, on his toes, using combos then moving again. Having said that I reckon the younger, hungrier canelo will wear him down and finish him late.
Disagree about ggg ducking people. It's all risk vs reward business decisions in boxing these days. Mayweather is the master at that. These guys aren't scared of anyone trust me.

                    Totally agree they aren't scared.
But GGG doesn't push his management to make these fights.

Mayweather gets accused of this but beat unbeaten Corales Hatton and Canelo
Also moved up to beat Cotto DeLaHoya Castillo
                    And beat Pacquiao Marquez Mosley
Even likes of Juhda Gatti Baldomir were decent

GGG cant list anyone at that level and he's almost retired

He's stayed at one weight and defended the straps against whoever they put in front of him. It's a different method to Mayweather going through the weights picking champs. Both just play the joke of a game that is modern boxing, risk vs reward. One loss for Mayweather along the way (got lucky vs that Mexican though) would have affected his future earnings massively. Didn't used to be that way. Robinson would lose and just rematch them two weeks later.

Got to also understand that Ward isn't a big draw. Scared is not the word, they are canny about the fights they pick especially if it's 50-50. Why do I fight against a top quality fighter like Ward and risk my unbeaten record for low ppv draws when I can fight Canelo for a massive payday. If, and I don't know if it'll happen, but the GGG-Ward fight after a GGG win could be real big.

I've always said Don King was sort of good for fans.
Terrible guy, terrible to his boxers, but in a way, his lack of interest in them gave fans good timed.
He basically gave the fans every fight they demanded knowing another would always come along and he was best just selling what was in demand

Some time in his decline boxing became a business with the boxers using their brains. Its gave us the likes of de la hoya running it now. Much more of a good guy with boxers best interests in mind. But that basically means selling us dud fights for a few years before the big ones.

Mayweather will lose the first, and win the second and third.

Why make the money from one fight, when everyone involved can treble it from three? The whole thing is a con to proper sports fans - and the powers that be are confident that enough that most people are stupid enough to buy into the whole spectacle of a series.

And sadly, they are probably right.

Yip that's going to be a cracker. I'm keen to see lomachenko go up again too. Some great champions lurking for him up there.
The publicity tour was fun for the Mayweather McGregor farce. Particularly enjoyed McGregor abusing the showtime boss and the fact he can legit look Mayweather in the eyes and tell him if this was a real fight you'd be dead in seconds, and floyd knows it's true.

He's amazing hey! Some Bruce Lee level martial arts that guy has. Got the talent to be spoken about in the same breathe as sugar ray Robinson if it all goes well for him.
399-1 record as an amateur! Would love for him to fight rigo but don't think it will happen. Rigo would have to give up a lot of pounds.

Was the first time I'd watched Lomachenko fight. Thought he was showboating a little too early by tapping Marriaga on the head and then inviting him to a corner ala Ali but he got the job done so clinically. There was such a gulf in class, it was unreal. Yeah, that Rigon fight could really be something. They need to promote these events better. Can't believe how bad the (lack of) publicity for Ward-Kovalev was. Such an elite event that.

I don't think you really need to be explaining things here. It's fairly obvious for the most part that this event is a joke. There are diehard fans, who like to suspend disbelief and believe their hero is capable of anything. It's like saying Federer will beat the badminton world number 1 at badminton. It just doesn't make sense and those who claim otherwise are clearly disrespectful of the other sport. Not worth your time discussing I'm afraid.

Yep, spot on. Even still McGregor has a punchers chance, certainly a better chance than Mayweather would have in the cage. He still has no right being in the ring with Mayweather. I have huge respect for any mma fighter or boxer. Really takes huge guts to do that never mind the actual fitness is beyond anything else in sport.
My biggest fear would be lucky KO actually being the death of boxing as young fans would see it as evidence that mma is better if that happened

Shit yeah. The balls and fitness are next level on these fighters.
I've enjoyed training and sparring on and off for years. Have never got in the ring for an amateur fight. Half because of nerves half because I haven't trained serious enough and have had injury problems. It's on my bucket list to train hard for 6 months and jump into an amateur fight. Just to know I tried. I'm 33 so certainly won't have a future in it šŸ˜†

That's a good point that last bit. Though boxing is doing a fine job of killing itself off anyway

All that analysis and Paulie Managnaggi got slapped up so badly he quit the training camp looool

That pretty much derails all your arguments

You try to make out that I am not educated on Mayweather but you say this:

"Then, remember in MMA a punch is just a means of opening an opponent up for the headlocks trips and grappling and hitting on the floor etc."

If you think that is how McGregor fights you clearly don't know what you're talking about

As above. I highly doubt McGregor with that. Just selling the fight. Otherwise he'd show footage.

Any footage of him boxing I've seen he's extremely wooden and slow. Like, surprisingly slow. Very telegraphed punches too. And head movement looks ridiculous

I don't claim to watch MMA. But I can tell you, I've seen McGregor rolling about hitting guys on the floor in MMA. So it is a part of his game

Well I watch both, McGregor is deceptively fast and powerful with his left hand. Generally uses his jiu jitsu to get the fight back to standing so he can tee off.
Him being young, strong, fast, southpaw vs Mayweather being old (one day he'll be too old, could it be this day? Cursed 49-0 record šŸ˜‰ ) a lot smaller and struggles more with southpaws gives McGregor a very small punchers chance in the early rounds.
Betting on Mayweather by knock out SHOULD be printing money.
Personally I'd love for McGregor to knock him out.
