Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

100% no............if he has a minor hamstring, it will take at least 3 weeks. International break after Palace game. They won't risk him.

Planning on Cédric > Jones after this GW.

Got the exact money to do it now! Is it worth doing it before the Cédric drop / Jones rise or just leave it until GW12?

    Otamendi • Cédric • Duffy • Yedlin
    Salah • E. Hazard • Richarlison
    Kane(C) • Aguero • Vardy

I haven't even worked out if I had a terrible week yet.

Played FHC, got 45 points but I'm sure this is more than if I hadn't played it.

I'm not so much 'managing' this season as 'flailing around.'

    Advice needed. Took my eye off the ball on fixtures a little and have a lot of tough fixtures for these lot;

    Elliot, Fabianski

    Otamendi, Kolasinac, Cedric, Maguire, Naughton

    Sanchez, Ramsey, RLC, King, Carroll

    Jesus, Morata, Kaku

So, free hit chip this week?? And if so, who should I be looking at?

100% not the week to freehit. Plenty of teams in the same boat as yourself which will limit the damage. Your only real issue is 3 arsenal. Maybe time to get rid of kola

If Kane plays tomorrow then I'd say he's fine for the weekend. A minor strain can heal up very quickly, and I doubt he'd feel ill effects once it had healed

Alternatively, If he plays he could hurt it more, or require more rest. If he doesn’t play, he might heal with a few extra days for the weekend.

very difficult for you to upgrade any of your players post that if you need to, say haz or morata. im wc that IB as well and will have a similar front 8 but will try and get a sort of bank there that i could downgrade if need be.

v difficult to do so really, I think eriksen will become a very good asset in a couple of GWs when spurs get a good run of fixtures so would have a plan to upgrade a mid in case him or hazard become too hard to ignore, but for now I think no one could say much bad about it
I put richarlison in last week and I'm still not completely sold on him, tempted by someone along the zaha/ramsey route longer term

It's easier to find a good cheap defender than a good expensive replacement. You can always upgrade another problem defender to a more expensive one when you know which one you want.

Poch would be mad to risk Kane if he has a hamstring strain. Madrid and Palace are hardly must win games - Spurs are in a strong position in both their CL group and in the league. Risking Kane over potential 6 points could cost Spurs far more if his hamstring is aggrevated.

Yeah I'm confident he won't play in either.

Yeah I think so, - they can't afford to be cut adrift, and need a Wembley win vs a side lower in attacking intent than 'pool, but not convinced they need Kane to do that

      Sterling (9, 20, 72)
      Silva (30, 45, 87)

This is the only scenario where my season gets back on track. In danger of becoming a write off.

Think Sané will start vs Arsenal though.

Id say Sané Aguero Sterling as the front 3.

Ive got no love for this game at the moment. Last season i was flying. The season before i was doing better. This season so far has been a shambles. Played my wildcard in gw6, scored badly. Turned out i should have just left my team alone as i would have scored about 13 more points. Last week i used my 'free hit' as the team i made with it looked awesome and, on paper would score highly. Scored terribly and again, had i left my team alone i would have scored 22 more points. See you at the end of the season as i aint touching nothing.

Why not just set yourself a new goal and work towards that. Like top 500k, then top 100k.

top 500k is quite a goal. im currently sitting at 1,496,045. best ive finished was 93k last season.

    Best captaincy option this week?
    1) Aguero

Depends on kane news, obviously if he starts then kane but if poch isnt sure then i think i am gonna go aguero (because i dont have salah), don't want kane coming off the bench and getting me a point,

I visit this site every day. I see he is around 60 for now, but his price is jumping very fast. I hope he will keep his price until tomorrow.
