Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Pretty depressing GW with 41 pts for my WC team (pre WC team would've gotten 51 pts 🙁 )

Punt on Laca (vc) for Kane didn't work out and captaining Aguero gamble obviously didn't work out.

I'm right to hold my FT until after the Int break this week provided Kane isn't past fit? Left 2.6m ITB for Laca back to Kane when fit.

    Speroni Elliot
    Mee Otamendi Kiko Gomez Dunk
    Salah Silva Rihcarlison Gross Carroll
    Morata Aguero Lacazette

This is about a non-story as you could possibly tout. Typical British press spin on nothing comments. Who doesn't find London busy and stressful.

If a Brit had said the same thing about London it'd be a non-story but we'll be damned if Johhny Foreigner says so!

    Got this bunch of jokers:

    Elliott (Fabs)
    Cedric Azpi Ward Stones (Mbemba)
    Silva Salah Sterling (Carroll RLC)
    Kane Vardy Morata

    0.2ITB

Stones -> Jones is a good transfer, but maybe not for this week. Likewise with Cedric -> Daniels.
Better to roll a transfer? (if no injuries before this weekend)

there are better chances of United keeping a clean sheet at chelsea than that of city's against arsenal, So i'd if you're gonna do it eventually, do it this week before his price rise

  8. MAVER!CK

So here's a dilemma, I had Alonso and brought Azpi in last week to cash in on obvious clean sheet against Bou and had planned to do Alonso>Ota this week, but looking at how United's defensive record, their cover seems must have(or even double up). So now I'm contemplating Alonso>Jones and they play each other this week. This fixture is screaming 0-0 to me or 1-0 at most either way. NOW you see being a United fan I don't want to hope for a Chelsea clean sheet over the weekend. So should I stick with Azpi-Alonso Chelsea double or use my FT on Jones (have ritchie>Rich transfer I've put off for few weeks..Or do both with -4?)
Sorry about the essay, Cheers 😉

yeah I get that, that's why there's not a single United player in my team. Thing is chelsea's defence hasn't been that great w/o Kante, so I thought It'd be better if I spread the risk, if it ends 0-0, great. If it ends 1-0 I still get one CS. What say?

Rough: Playing the Free Hit Chip with Sanchez (C), Lacazette, Monreal and Richarlison.
Smooth: Hazard, Vardy, Firminho, Pope, Ward.
Smoothest of all though was that I was languishing just below the 2m rank and decided to do a Jonty season 2016/17 and take a load of hits last Sunday, to catch the price rises / falls and hopefully save my season. So I took 5 hits for -20 bringing in amongst others Ottamendi, Aguero, Richarlison ,Femenia and Salah, who were surely going to be worth the hits. Fast forward to Friday evening and news of Kane’s unavailability, which now meant -24! Went on FFS site and read at the 11th hour on the Hot Topics that the Free Hit Chip would wipe all my previous hits, which until I’d read it I was oblivious to.( Thanks Musicholic!) Here’s my comment of disbelief!
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/10/27/yahoo-focus-gameweek-10/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_16826568
Decided to play the chip and not go -24. My teams week score with the 5 hits (-20 )would have been 9 !. My Free Hit Chip score was 56! Up 380k. Best use of any chip I’ve ever had. So my advice to anyone who makes some bad hits and discovers that they need to make even more due to late injuries, the FH chip really can help!!!!

I'd like to discuss the merits of looking at value (points per million) as a means of choosing players. Many swear by it, I don't personally.

Here is an eleven of the best value players, following FPL budget and formation constraints (bench is cheapest possible = irrelavent).

    DDG
    Jones, Otamendi, Ward
    Sane, Fernandinho, Gross, Doucoure, Davis
    Abraham, Diouf

The total score for this team so far is 568. There are 4 players in the overall best team.

Here is my best attempt at making an eleven based on total points within budget and formation (bench is identical fodder).

    DDG
    Valencia, Otamendi, Jones
    Sane, Sterling, Gross, Richarlison, Doucoure
    Kane, Lukaku

The total score for this team so far is 641. There are 9 players in the overall best team.

    Conclusion:
    a) It's points over value when looking at players.
    b) Be careful to not pick players over performing their price point for that reason alone.
    c) Premium players will rarely rank highly in value lists but they score the most.
    d) It's OK to have premium players without captaining them. The second team is far ahead already but when captaining Kane/Lukaku over someone captained in the value team, it would absolutely rinse the value team.
    e) Stay away from looking at list based on value (points per million). Look at total score then simply fit in who you can afford, else you'll end up with Diouf.

Shucks. You're right. I could switch some around but the total will be similar. I probably haven't even got the ideal combination anyway, a better one would be even further ahead of the value.

    2. TheTwelfthMan
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

That makes little, if any sense. You would have over 25m in the bank, if you choose the cheapest fodder, with that side. People don't choose value players to stock on value players and keep money in the bank because they earn interest on that money. They choose value players to maximize the amount of big hitters they can have.

      1. TheTwelfthMan
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

The point you're basically making is a team with a few expensive players and a few cheap players will do better than a team with 11 cheap players. That's not breaking news.

      2. Oddjobleff
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member
        • 9 Years

I'm trying to say it isn't a game of maximising value. It is an extreme example but I think some people get sucked in to thinking some players aren't worth their fee due to value, particularly if they're not captaining them. Value shouldn't be a reason to not get someone. Kane's ppm is awful but nearest to essential we have.

        1. TheTwelfthMan
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

It is a game of maximizing value though, you can't afford all the best players without maximizing value elsewhere. What your post is saying is don't go for 11 value players and 4 bench fodder and don't completely avoid premium assets.

and I’m going to play all 4. Hoping Kolasinac can link up with Sanchez as he did in the last game.... City are conceding if late. Think it’s better to play him than Tom Carroll.

Coming to a site where members pay for these stats and asking where you can get them for free...

I use a free site called 'my job'. It's a bit finickity though, you work for money and then pay for goods and services such as fantasy football scout membership using that money.

Just thought I’d mention that DDG is currently fourth in the overall points table. That puts him ahead of the likes of Aguero, Erikson, Sarah, Morata and a host of other big names.

At the 5.5 he started and even the 5.7 he now costs, that represents exceptional value.

Is Trippier nailed in his position? Considering Aurier took his spot this week...

    A) DDG, Ben Mee, Gross/shaqiri, Eriksen
    B) Courtois, Daniels/5.0 def, Gross/shaqiri, Eriksen
    C) Krul, Mbemba, Sterling, Eriksen
    D) Pope, 4.5 def, Sterling, Sane
    E) Pope, Mbemba, Sterling, Coutinho
    F) Pope, 4.7 def, Eriksen, Ramsey
    G) Courtois, 4.4 def, Eriksen, Richarlison
    H) Krul, 5.0 def, Sterling, Sane
    I) DDG, Ben Mee, Sane, Ramsey
    J) Other combination of 1 gk, 1 def, two midfielders for a combined 25.8

Oviously DDG can become Courtois in any option

This is/would be the rest of the team:

    Elliot (xxx)
    Jones Gomez Naughton Cameron (xxx)
    Xxx Salah xxx (RLC Caroll)
    Aguero Kane Morata

I know it is not easy. But would love some suggestions.
