Manchester City come from behind to beat a resolute Huddersfield Town as Sergio Aguero is handed a surprise start while Raheem Sterling excels.

Jumping to the wrong conclusion regarding Pep Guardiola’s plans is now so ingrained that even the man himself is issuing contradictory statements these days.

Last week, he announced that Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus would have to be rotated while a system tweak to cope with the injury to Benjamin Mendy remained in place.

Mendy is still very much injured, but now Pep has this to say:

“I can say I think they are going to play together again, even with or without Mendy. Until now I decide to play in that way and I decide one or the other one. Of course, they can play together, but I decide to play more with specific wingers with their quality there and play with one striker. They are perfect to play together and that is going to happen.”

No surprises then that Guardiola was full of surprises when it came to his personnel choices for the trip to Huddersfield.

Having handed Aguero the full 90 minutes in midweek away to Feyenoord – a match in which Jesus was given only a late cameo – more than 195,000 Fantasy Premier League managers sold the Argentine going into Gameweek 13.

The fact that Jesus had started every away match in the league this season was further evidence that it would be the Brazilian’s turn to lead the line against the Terriers.

But it was Aguero who got the nod and the 8% of brave souls who handed him the armband were duly rewarded when he slotted home a penalty just after half-time following a foul on Raheem Sterling.

The 18.8%-owned forward now has nine goals in as many appearances this season. He’s also started every home league fixture he’s been available for but, having played 175 minutes in two matches this week, that record looks in serious doubt ahead of visits from Southampton and West Ham over the next seven days.

While Aguero has played close to two full matches in six days, Jesus was given just 36 minutes.

The Brazilian has also started just one of the last three Gameweeks, but he’s still managed to produce returns in all of them, with an assist from yesterday’s ten minutes from the bench to go with back-to-back goals previously.

Everything now seems to point to Jesus starting against Southampton on Wednesday, but we’re second-guessing Guardiola, so nothing is assured.

Sterling on the rise again

Yesterday’s goal, assist and maximum bonus for the 10.5%-owned Sterling (8.1) took him to within three points of his pricier (9.0) and more popular (29.7%) team-mate Leroy Sane.

The England midfielder’s output has been stellar this campaign, with 12 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions. That’s his best ever single-season return, and we’re not even out of November yet.

But even his recent superb form – three goals and four assists from his last five appearances – has failed to impress FPL managers and he lost nearly 300,000 owners between Gameweeks 11 and 13 as managers jumped ship to, among others, Sane and David Silva.

But Sane has now produced just a single assist in three Gameweeks, the Spaniard two assists in five.

Sane also picked up a booking at the John Smith’s Stadium, which, while not yet confirmed by the FA, moves him to four for the season according to our records. Sane earned a yellow card in the EFL Cup tie with West Brom and has three cautions in the Premier League. He should, therefore, be just one yellow card away from a one-match ban. Expect an update from us on this once FA records are updated today.

Fernandinho also looks to be on four bookings and given that the Manchester derby is looming in Gameweek 16, it will be interesting to see if this now enters in Guardiola’s thinking with his team selection prior to that encounter.

Unlucky Otamendi still has much to offer

With more than 358,000 managers moving Nicolas Otamendi out of their squads, he was the most sold in Gameweek 12 following his one-match ban.

Coming into Gameweek 13, he was drafted in by 133,000+ – more than any other defender.

An own goal at Huddersfield that he could do little about gave his 16.7% ownership a nasty zero on the day, and Otamendi’s recent showings have been similarly disheartening.

After claiming six clean sheets in the first nine Gameweeks, City have managed just one shut-out in four – ironically in the match, against Leicester City, for which Otamendi was suspended.

As a result, the fifth most popular defender in FPL has produced just a single point over the last four Gameweeks.

But hope is on the horizon.

Seven of City’s nine matches (SOT WHU swa BOU new cry WAT) between now and Gameweek 22 on January 2 look very promising for defensive, as well as attacking, returns.

Guardiola’s backline has also allowed fewer shots (75), attempts in the box (42) and efforts on target (21) than any other side.

John Stones’ hamstring injury and Vincent Kompany’s never-ending fitness issues mean that Otamendi could be safe from rotation over the festive period – a huge potential plus during such a traditionally fraught time for Fantasy managers.

Hastily moved early last night cause I really like the upside of Alonso.

    GW14 Transfers: Trippier + Vardy >> Alonso + Wilson (-4)

I am not too happy with these transfers but the thought process was Trippier may be rotated with Aurier midweek and Vardy hasn't returned so he became my enabler. I am worried about Wilson's minutes though.. and ideally would have liked to have waited for the pressers.

    GW14 Team:

    Elliot
    Walker - Daniels - Alonso - Bellerin
    Sane - Hazard - Surman
    Kane(c) - Morata - Wilson

Bench: Forster - Maguire - Carroll - Carrick

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on:
    A) My transfers
    B) GW team (yep I am really playing triple bournemouth vs burnley)

personally would have used the cash from Vardy to upgrade your midfield rather than get Alonso, he is a great option though

sadly Surman isn't even close to somebody like RLC in terms of threat, was considering starting him myself until I had a look at the stats

Agreed, did consider a further move but thought RLC for Carroll wouldn't warrant an extra -4, when I could play Surman

I considered a similar move to get the same 2 players or Wilson and Hazard as I saw the prices changing but I have Surman and Daniels too. I didn't want 3 Bournemouth with their 3 difficult fixtures in 3 weeks time. I think Alonso is worth having though. Not sure on Wilson yet personally. I think he will start most of the next 6 games but unsure if he will get any returns. Also likely to come off at 60 mins with the running he does but not really an issue I guess

I know Sterling excelled for fantasy points but he sucked bad in the game, dived for a pen, had a goal bounce in off his knee and generally lost possession or misplaced a pass every time he got hold of the ball

If Southampton were to sign a Man City midfielder (I know, I know) There are 6 I'd choose before Sterling.
Silva, Sane, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Gundogan, and Foden.
      But Fantasy team wise...

🙂 I don't hate him, just don't think he's a very good player, he has speed and that is his greatest attribute. But he isn't a great finisher, doesn't have good vision (like Silva or De Bruyne) often seems to make the wrong decision when he gets the ball, will turn into traffic, keep it too long when a flick or one touch pass would be better.
Anyway, don't hate him, just the article saying Sterling excels made me laugh and I'm bored now. Watched the game yesterday and laughed as Sterling racked up the points. Wasn't worried I already had 63 points with Ederson the only Man City player in my team.

Anyone else seriously concerned about Lukaku´s possible ban?
If he is suspended, is the verdict most likely to happen after the upcoming GW 14?

If he is suspended for 3 matches, I will get a low price forward (Niasse?) to Lukaku. I have Tammy A and Morata as well. Considering the uncertainty surrounding the premium forwards, investment in defense and midfield seems more safe.
Bringing in a 6.0 (max) forward frees up LOADS of funding for heavy hitters in midfield and also Azpi in defense. Azpi/Alonso is a must in my mind, considering Chelsea´s ridiculous schedule.

    Thoughts?

This is exactly what I was thinking this morning.

It's either find 1.3m to get Kane or downgrade and get an awesome 5 man midfield. I like Austin and Niasse as they rotate well.

      Pope-elliott

      Alonso-Otamendi-Monreal-Mee-Naughton

      Hazard-Salah-Sane-Sterling-Richarlison

      Morata-Austin-Niasse

Could have something like this in 2 gws

It is a good point that Lukaku is facing a tough few GWs, considering his history against top tier opponents. Might as well dont worry about the ban and just offload him anyways.

      Courtois-Elliott
      Azpi-Otamendi-Naughton-Daniels-Rangel
      Salah-Pogba-Silva-R.L.C-Richarlison
      Morata-Niasse-Tammy

      Left in the bank:
      A whopping 6.7!

The plan will be to spend it on premium defenders with kind schedules and/or at least one more premium midfielder.

      Diversify til you die!

    (3/4th defender, 3rd mid & 5th Mid)

    A) Mustafi/Monreal, Pogba & RLC

    B) Kiko, Pogba & Choupo-Moting

    C) Kiko, 9.5mid & RLC

    Have Salah & Sane.

RLC nailed Carrol is not. Well maybe RLC might suffer some rotation also but so does everyone else.

Made a 22 point loss on the transfers I made last GW.

    Sick as a dog.

It happens. Don't dwell. Judge it over the next 4 or 5

Yeah. Luckily there's another GW coming up. Hard not to think about the rank jump if I'd left Kun/Sterling in there.

Is Zeegelaar an option or will he be ousted quickly when injuries get better for watford?

Looks like a good prospect, rotation is definitely an issue.

I already got in this. I don't think Silva is that confident in Holebas.Links up with charlison.

Holebas was fit last game, zeegelaar played and took the game by storm

I really want to know this too. Is Holebas his main / only competition?

Looks like a fantastic option if somewhat nailed or at least constantly in the mix.

Maybe he is worth the gamble. I am on a wild card right now and I am probably getting him. But It would be nice to have some insight in what the watford manager thinks. But no one knows maybe...

    Fabianski Elliott
    Otamendi Moreno Daniels Mee Mbemba
    Salah Silva Gross Shaqiri RLC
    Aguero Kane Morata

Did TC > RLC, any hits needed? Thinking of saving my next FT and shifting Aguero to Hazard after the weekend

    GTG? And bench order ?

    De Gea
    Alonso - Daniels - Mee - Moreno
    Shaqiri - Hazard(C) - Salah - Gross
    Kane (vc) - Aguero
    Speroni - Dunk - Milivojevic - Niasse

Shaqiri, Dunk, Milivojevic I think one of the will play atm I rely on Shaqiri.

This is why it’s important to play for money as well as points....although people always disagree until they are a couple of mill short of a player

It's an interesting one. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle personally. For it's points > pounds to an extent, but more like 70% / 30% than 100 / 0. It is important to build some value along the way, without obsessing over it.

I have a ML rival who is clearly chasing TV massively, taking hits every week on players certain to rise etc. He's up to 103.8 now after flying to 103 way before anyone else's team that I had seen. Problem is, the players are often not great choices and their value eventually stalls or dips back.

I've opened up a massive gap on him in overall points, but I can see that he's still chasing value big time.

Meanwhile I've mostly worried about points, but kept TV and rises in mind when it seemed like some value was available. Now my TV is 103.1 and I'm totally fine with that. I guess the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Good reply, you have to take both seriously anyone not thinking about money at all will suffer after crimbo...I’m currently on 105 TV with 30k rank

Tbh my team value is actually very good. I just can’t squeeze Hazard in with hits and losing good players. Team below:

            Pope, Elliot
            Alonso, Jones, Mee, Dann, Naughton
            Salah, Sane, Sterling, Richarlison, Carroll
            Kane, Morata, Wilson
