For the second Gameweek in a row there were green arrows for all the Top Five as this elite group find their collective feet. However, some did their best to sabotage this through some poor transfers.

Mark Sutherns (aka Mark) made his first foray into the top 100k moving up in the overall rankings to 92,272 with a gameweek score of 62. It could have been 71 had he not transferred out Swansea’s Kyle Naughton for Manchester City’s Nicolas Otamendi. The former collecting a clean sheet and all three bonus points, the later managing no clean sheet and an own goal. His decision to bench Crystal Palace ‘magic bean’ Reuben Loftus-Cheek, who he has championed on the Scoutcast, was another mis-step in an otherwise strong week.

Gameweeks 13’s highest scorer in the Top Five was the lowest ranked manager Matthew Jones (aka Numb) who jumped from just inside the top 1m to 572,079. He benefitted from a double digit points return courtesy of Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and a 16 point haul from his captain Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Interestingly Matthew benched Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino, who he has been slow to ditch, having kept him throughout a barren run of just one goal and an assist since drafting him in on his Gameweek 4 wildcard.

After the Brazilian was rested against Chelsea, and with a decent run of fixtures for Liverpool, Matthew may feel he has a potential differential on his hands as he looks to avoid hanging onto the wooden spoon among this elite group.

One manager he won’t be catching any time soon though is current Live Hall of Fame leader Jay Egersdorff. Jay moved up to 331 overall with a decent 61 points, which was not helped by selling Swansea ‘keeper Lucasz Fabianski, another player to score 9 points, and replacing him with Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni, who was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the home match against Stoke.

Explaining his moves for Gameweek 13, he reasoned that by selling Fabianski for Speroni he was adding precious funds to his transfer kitty.

This season’s career HoF number one Peter Kouwenberg (aka My Pretty Pony) was another to fall victim to Roy Hodgson’s surprising team selection. Peter transferred in defender Scott Dann for Manchester United’s injured defender Phil Jones, yet he still mustered a very decent 58 points.

The headline in Gameweek 13 for Peter is that he broke his awful run of luck when captaining Kane – the Spurs man finally scored at home against a supposedly weaker team set up to defend.

Career number two Graeme Sumner (aka Gregor) was the only manager not to captain the England frontman this week. He instead went for Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku, who failed to score against a resolute Brighton defence. Graeme still managed a score of 62, thanks to points returns from all but three of his players.

Graeme re-invested the £4.5m he had in the bank (ITB) heading into Gameweek 13 by upgrading Swansea’s Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham to Chelsea’s current centre forward Alvaro Morata. Even though the Spaniard was taking on a resolute Liverpool home defence I suspect that move was made to catch his price rise, as Graeme now has no funds left in the bank.

This is a reduced article this week due to the quick turnaround, jump to the end for thoughts on Chelsea players and who to captain this week.

This article focuses on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of this site’s Career Hall of Fame. Between them these managers have achieved nine top 1,000 finishes in the past three seasons and have ended up in the top 10,000 a whopping 37 times over the course of their FPL careers.

To help out I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Kane is the most popular having been chosen 48% of the time followed by Lukaku on 35%. So far Lukaku has proved the more reliable choice averaging a 14.2 point return when chosen as captain compared to Kane’s 9.7 points.

In the graphic below I’ve displayed this information for the five most popular captain picks.

The other three most popular players who have been chosen as captains by our Top Five this season are Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette. Salah has been chosen 6% of the time and averages eight points as captain, while Aguero and Lacazette have both been chosen 5% of the time, averaging 22 and 12 points respectively.

A 3-5-2 set up continues to prove a popular choice since first being used in Gameweek 10. So far this season 3-4-3 has been chosen 63% of the time with 4-3-3 second most popular on 18%. 4-3-3 was the canny early season choice as managers looked to take advantage of real world formations favouring wing-backs, but it hasn’t been used by our Top Five since Graeme played it in Gameweek 9. Managers are now shifting their attention to the value to be found in midfield as choices emerge across a range of price brackets.

GAMEWEEK 14 Preview

With a strong run of games throughout December and well into 2018 Chelsea assets look set to dominate the top five’s thoughts. So far ahead of this week’s deadline Jay, Graeme and Mark are ahead of the game, with Peter and Matthew forced to play catch up.

Chelsea players in the Top Five’s teams before transfers ahead of this week’s deadline:

  • 0 Chelsea defenders
  • Hazard is only owned by Mark
  • Morata owned just by Jay and Graeme.

Peter has made three transfers so far this gameweek taking an eight point hit and it seems likely that either Morata or Hazard, or both, have joined his team?

Former career HoF number one Ville Ronka has I’m fairly certain brought in both Morata and Hazard with his two free transfers.

Mark and Matthew have also made moves this week, with a strong likelihood that both have swapped Lukaku for Morata.

In Mark’s case this would mean doubling up on Chelsea with Hazard and Morata.

Despite eulogising about Hazard after being in the crowd for the Liverpool v Chelsea match last week, Jay is yet to make a move.

It looks like the captaincy choice could also be split, and I think we will definitely see either Hazard or Morata handed the armband this week, with some possibly opting for Kane.

Here’s Jay’s comments on this week’s captaincy pasted from his YouTube page:

1) Morata/Hazard – both on form, decent fixture on paper. Downside is Swansea don’t let in many. Hazard has the slight advantage of an extra point for a goal (vs Morata) and an extra point if Chelsea don’t concede. A Chelsea (C) would be the sensible choice.

2) Kane – away form stronger than home form. Spurs’ overall form isn’t great and they haven’t scored more than one goal in a league game since October. Spurs need to win to stay in touch with the chasing pack.

3) Salah – great form, Liverpool’s best player. Worth a look if you need to gamble to climb the rankings.

    Thanks for this.

Mark, Jay and Graeme have been ahead of the pack re Chelsea so far....this could give them the edge and the freedom to make other moves while the others catch up.

Will certainly be all about Chelsea among this group this week I reckon.

Interesting split; I thought Jay would go for one of his Chelsea players - he's added Hazard to Morata - but he instead opted for Kane captain. As indeed has Mark.

Peter's taken a 12 point hit!!! and has captained Salah.
Players in: Hazard, Morata, Christensen, RLC
Players out: Sterling, Lukaku, Zaha, Holgate

Matthew and Graeme on Morata (c). Graeme another to buy Christensen.

Peter really going for it, Salah captain I think is bold as there's an outside chance he could be rested. Kane his VC.

        Salah captain is interesting.

The 12 point hit looks strong if Christensen comes off. I think Hazard is borderline necessary through December and the rest of November and the same with Morata. 12 is a lot though..

Kane felt like the safe choice. I wanted to go Hazard captain but couldn't quite convince myself to do it :/

You've both ended up with exactly the same front 7 this week, perhaps a December template is forming. I certainly feel nervous not owning Hazard this week.

Peter's improved his team overall and made his bench stronger by getting rid of Holgate, hopefully it will pay off for him. He was spot on with most of his transfers last season.

Kane is the safe choice, at least I feel he's doing well even if Spurs as a whole are slightly in the doldrums. Another tough captain choice coming up - Kane away to Watford, Haz home to Newcastle - remember that hat-trick he got against them a few years ago?

That is bold! I like the moves though, just not sure I would have made them all the same time myself. Maybe they needed to be together though for budgetary reasons.

Christensen I think is a good buy. Conte was already trusting him more than Luiz, and now Luiz is injured it only strengthens his starts. I think I'll be getting him in for either the next gameweek or the one after that.

I think you're right regarding Salah, TM. Definately think he will miss either tonights game or the one at the weekend, having just played 3 games in a week, and with the crucial game against Moscow and the Merseyside derby the following week. Peter will probably reluctancy accept a complete benching tonight, the killer is the 10 min 1 point cameo. FPL managers might really suffer with Salah as a direct result of Liverpool throwing away that 3-0 lead against Seville.

I just think Alonso is such a better option, and maybe Azpi as well. I'm really hoping to find a way to fund one of them over Christensen.

Two goals or a few assists before January for both of them is likely I think

Oh I don't doubt that, Alonso and Azpi I'm sure will outscore Christensen over the coming gameweeks. But with rotation for all 3 of them likely, they might not justify the additional 1.5m outlay. Depends on the situation of each person's team, but that could be the difference between Carroll and Gross in midfield, non playing Elliott and Courtious in goal, Alli and Hazard in midfield, or Chuopo-Moting and Ramsey. Guess you have to weigh up the points potential of those respective combinations over a 10 game period 🙂

Desperate times for me - I should probably leave well enough alone given how poorly my transfers thus far have gone. However, I was concerned about benching 'somewhere' (Silva, Moreno, Haz, Salah, to name but a few) and I was already missing Niasse, Holgate and probably Dann.

Lukaku and Zaha (reluctantly!) had to go for budget reasons and Holgate for benching reasons. I could have kept Sterling instead of getting Hazard to avoid a -4 but at the time I felt Sterling was a bigger rotation risk.

It's desperation stuff, though. The team was a state and needed some significant surgery. With Niasse and Dann already missing out this week, I'm hoping only one of the remaining players is rested (max) and obviously not Salah!

As far as mini wildcards go, it looks sound in thought to me, can't afford to carry too many non players through this period! I'm going all in on Chelsea too shortly, so agree with you on the players incoming too 🙂

I feel the Salah benching is more likely at the weekend against Brighton, as Salah had 2 weeks off in the international break relatively recently. But Klopp did basically say yesterday Firmino and Mane were coming back into the team tonight and I just worry that may be in place of Salah, with Ox retaining his start and Lallana possibly eating into everyone's minutes...

No question, Salah was a gamble, and my (and other's) insecurity was reflected by the fact I had captained and viced Haz and Morata (I think in that order) before switching to Salah and Kane just before the deadline!

I think Kane as vice was a logical choice for anyone gambling with a rotation risk for their first choice because he was always likely to play. Beyond that, it's high risk but potentially high reward.

And, as you say, then the same quandry again this weekend. And next. And next...

Haha! I almost did the same, I was really wavering between Hazard and Kane, in the end stuck with my original decision to cap Hazard and VC Kane. I did wonder if Leicester would turn it on at the King Power under the lights. Still Hazard to play though so if he gets 1 point then in hindsight I should have captained Kane!

Next weekend looks a horrible one in terms of picking a captain, for me; Morata, Hazard, Sane, Kane and Salah are all good options! However tonights matches may reveal some clues on selection that can help us inform our decision. Either way, for the reasons you mentioned above, Kane should probably be the VC as a safety play.

        Hi MPP,

I thought we were going to see a different you this season? 😉

Every time I eulogised about your incredible transfers (and hits!) last year I felt you were occasionally embarrassed about your success - reminding me that you are not really this type of hit-taking manager and normally much more cautious in your approach. Well if Plan A doesn't work your Plan B isn't bad 🙂

Two moves didn't surprise me - Lukaku and Holgate - losing them makes your team much stronger I think. The other two moves are quite instructive; selling Sterling, who got the winning goals in the last two City matches, and keeping D. Silva as your City mid is really interesting. Opting for steady and less rotation risk over potentially more explosive yet higher rotation risk. With rotation likely to affect so many players at this time of the season, perhaps having a balance of players who are more secure vs those who could be more explosive yet less secure, is key. You could also argue Silva has been unlucky not get more points.

FYI Jay sold Silva instead of Sterling, so this could prove to be an important decision in the battle for the number HoF spot.

Finally selling Zaha, Jay was equally reluctant about selling Ramsey this week, but if you want Hazard and with RLC offering good value, these are the tough decisions you have to make.

Good luck sir! Good to have the hits-taking Peter back, much more exciting 😉

Haha, hey TM, good stuff. Hits are great, if they're the right hits 🙂 This season, my gambles have rarely paid off (as you have identified) and the times I've been cautious have also not worked out.

I have to admit to shifting Sterling (mainly because my priority was nailed options) before his Sunday haul, due to price changes (which ultimately didn't matter, but hey). If I had a reliable 14, my 15th would be Sterling.

I'm not sure there is much of a battle for #1 this season. I need to get back on track to stay in the top 10, let alone top 5. Jay is absolutely flying and would love to see him win the overall thing.

It would be amazing if he won the whole thing, as Graeme said a few weeks ago, a manager of his calibre making such a good start means he has to be in with a shout.

You are by no means out of the race for the number one HoF spot at the end of the season, a manager of your quality! I'm really looking forward to seeing how the race unfolds, long way to go yet.

Courtois is an option. He does take up a valuable Chelsea slot however, and Alonso / Azpi have the bonus of attacking returns. Christensen also managed four goals last season at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Courtois tends not to get many bonus or save points either. Personally I prefer trying to find that gem of a keeper who is cheap, and does well playing for a not-so-good team with saves and bonus points.

Courtois definitely a very secure route into the Chelsea defence. All defenders have a greater element of rotation risk.

Bittersweet reading this. Was all set to beat the HOF top 5 in GW13 assuming a decent captaincy showing, but where they benefitted from Kane captaincies and Sterling ownership, I backed Man City in the form of captain Sane and really suffered for it 🙁 feel a bit hard done by!

4 captaincy blanks in the last 5 gameweeks and gone with Hazard this week, everyone else who did the same should be concerned! 😛 I think there's a strong chance either Morata or Hazard will have minutes managed, possibly Hazard starting up front in a 3-4-3 and being replaced by Morata after an hour. But with Fernandez out for Swansea their defence won't be up to much, so I think Hazard and Morata are more than capable of getting attacking returns in the time on the pitch they are given 🙂

Elliott being dropped has put the cat amongst the pidgeons a bit, plenty won't have a playing keeper this week. This might in a way bring premium keepers back into play as Coutios and DDG are only 1m-1.3 more expensive than the cheapest playing keeper now, and offer a security of starts that Smalling, Rojo, Christensen, Alonso etc may not over this xmas period.

It's always painful when you don't get XI out in a given week, but I don't think even those who have a goalie will get too many points this week. The only goalie with more than 5% ownership who can keep a clean sheet is Courtois - United conceding hurt a lot of owners.

Yeah I decided to play Elliott over Fabianski this week, so hoping for some save points from Fab tonight! But I can't expect to gain too many points over the teams with 2 non playing keepers this week, I agree. Good point on De Gea, and all those starting Valencia too.

      Hi TRM,

Captain blanks are so painful! Kane the main culprit this year, Sane could have been a real differential pick last week, you are right to feel a little hard done by.

Re Hazard and Morata, I watched the Conte press conference yesterday and I got the feeling Hazard will start. I know there's that rumour going around about Haz and Azpi not starting but I'll be amazed if that's true. When asked about Hazard missing a few games over this busy festive period Conte responded by saying he needs to protect his players but also that Hazard is used to the kicks in the PL. Others have said there's a greater chance of Morata being rotated as the less battle-hardened of the two.

Nonetheless with Kane seemingly more secure at Spurs it does pose interesting captain dilemmas over the next few gameweeks.

        Hi TM,

Yeah I've suffered from them a lot this season, partly Kane but also from City players. 7 blanks in 13 gameweeks, only 114 points, which is just 15% of my total score. Shocking stuff, and bizarre considering how well I picked them last season. It was painful watching MOTD2 and seeing Sane had hit the crossbar, and picked up his yellow after the game had ended! How are you getting on with captains this season?

Ah ok, thats good to hear 🙂 Yeah Hazard got kicked by a few pool players, and especially Salah just after half time didn't he? I guess thats what he was referring to in particular. Yeah Morata has never played for any club consistently, let alone 3 games in a week. He's also always had a winter break too. He strikes me as the greater rotation risk.

Certainly does. Peter and I were discussing earlier that having Kane always as at least your vice captain may be a safe strategy, heaven forbid getting a captain AND vice captain no show in the same week! :O

Captains not great but not suffering quite as much as you! The highlight being when I captained Salah away to WHM instead of Kane v CPL, I should have left the armband on him though! 148 points, 20% of my total score.

Where I'm not doing very well this year is transfers; -3 immediate transfer points gained, add on my 20 points in hits and I should really stop making any moves at all! Another reason for you to feel confident about Hazard is that I haven't transferred him in this week 🙂

Haha I don't think many are! That was a good call on Salah, I didn't even own Salah at that point so was a big rank dive for me that week. 20% is a bit healthier though, I seem to remember 25%-30% being what we should aim for, based on last season?

Oh dear! -3 is very unfortunate! Think I'm on 22 immediate points gained, with 12 points in hits, so not pulling up any trees on that front myself either lol. Haha I guess we shall find out in a few hours 🙂

Just another thing I noticed on fplstatistico, I've gained 41 points in autosubs. Maybe one thing I have done ok on this season so far is having a strong bench, a skill which may prove useful over this congested winter fixture list!

Remember this is just a percentage of your total score so for instance Jay and Mark both have 172 captain points this season but that's 20% of Jay's score and 23% of Mark's. I'd rather have Jay's 20% 🙂

30% would be exceptional, 25% very good. I think Peter did best out of the HoFs last season with 26%. As he also got an exceptional points total it shows that captaincy decisions were a key part of that.

My total auto-subs points is only 13. I should probably stop looking at my team on fplstatistico, it makes me depressed! A strong bench definitely be a benefit over the coming weeks.

Haha yes of course. And I'd rather have a performing team with underperforming captains than over performing captains in an underperforming team! its certainly more sustainable anyway lol. Just have to keep plugging away and hope my luck turns on the captaincy front.

Ah OK, I'd elevated the percentages in mY mind a little then.

Haha! You have climbed the ranks over the season though haven't you? Ive just treaded water between 100k and 500k all season lol. Not sure which is better, if any!

Not sure if I've actually posted congratulations to Jay on his exceptional season so far. Smashing it and could well be challenging for the overall title this season - good luck to him!
