With Premier League action resuming this weekend, we have launched our latest Captain Poll to canvass your opinions on the best armband options for Gameweek 23.

A home encounter with Everton provides Harry Kane (12.9) with a golden opportunity to atone for a disastrous double Gameweek 22 that produced just three Fantasy Premier League points against Swansea and West Ham.

As well as topping that Gameweek’s poll, more than 1,320,000 (24.2%) of FPL managers handed him the captaincy, with 121,000+ trusting the Spurs striker with their Triple Captain chip.

Those backing Kane again will be comforted by his brace against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup yesterday. Furthermore, he collides with a Toffees defence that has conceded more shots (81) than any side over the last four Gameweeks.

His team-mates Dele Alli (9.0), Son Heung-min (8.1) and Christian Eriksen (9.3) could also profit.

Intriguingly, all six goals that the Merseysiders have conceded over the last nine Gameweeks have been scored by midfielders, with Charlie Austin’s brace in Gameweek 13 the last time a striker breached their backline in the league.

Of this trio Alli has the slight edge in terms of form, having scored twice and assisted a further four goals over his last quartet of league matches. However, Son has also impressed over this period with two successful strikes and as many assists – indeed, the South Korean has scored in all but one of his last seven outings at Wembley Stadium.

At home to a managerless Stoke side that have shipped a league-high 27 away goals, Manchester United’s key assets are bound to be popular.

The number one transfer target for Gameweek 23, Jesse Lingard (6.3), has emerged as a viable captaincy option having dominated the Red Devils’ attacking play since cementing a starting berth in Gameweek 14.

Over that period he has been involved in more than half (53%) of his side’s goals, having found the net seven times and assisted two more. His goal in the FA Cup against Derby on Friday further underlines his potential ahead of this clash, which is the first match for the Potters since Mark Hughes’ departure.

Despite missing three matches through suspension over that period, Paul Pogba (7.9) is second only to Lingard among Jose Mourinho’s charges for goal attempts. The Frenchman was handed licence to roam forward away to Everton last time out, claiming two assists and 12 FPL points – his first double-digit haul since Gameweek 12.

Romelu Lukaku (11.3) also scored against Derby in the FA Cup and could attract interest, despite only finding the net twice in his previous nine league run outs.

With a solitary shut-out and 18 goals conceded on their travels, Leicester’s poor away defence should encourage interest in Chelsea’s assets for their head-to-head at Stamford Bridge.

Should he recover from a calf injury Eden Hazard (10.7) may be the most popular option. Even though his penalty in last week’s clash with Arsenal was a first goal since Gameweek 15, the Belgian’s six efforts in the box was more than any single-Gameweek player.

Marcos Alonso (7.3) form and broad points potential continue to smash the myth that a defender should never be handed the armband.

Over the last six, the Spaniard has averaged an impressive 8.8 points having notched three goals, an assist, four clean sheets and six bonus points. He is also second only to striker Alvaro Morata (10.5) for shots this season among Chelsea assets.

Manchester City’s trip to Liverpool is among this Gameweek’s trickiest ties to call and could hinder the prospects of both sides’ big-hitters.

At home, no side have allowed fewer shots (63) or goals (four) than the Merseysiders, while their visitors have been similarly miserly at the back on the road, shipping a league-low five away goals.

But with both sides in fine attacking form, their defensive records could be shattered this weekend. Away from the Etihad, Pep Guardiola’s troops have had more shots (193) than any other side while at home only Spurs (233) have fired off more goal attempts than Liverpool’s 225.

Those backing City assets in the poll could well turn to former Red Raheem Sterling (8.9). The winger has earned attacking returns in each of his last five league starts, notching three double-figure FPL points hauls along the way.

With no competition for a start from the injured Gabriel Jesus, Sergio Aguero (11.7) should also attract interest – a brace in the FA Cup against Burnley this weekend brings the Argentine’s goal tally to six in his last eight starts.

Mohamed Salah (10.1) looks the man most likely to prosper for the hosts – providing, of course, he recovers from a groin injury. The Egyptian – who is FPL’s top scoring player – has produced a goal or assist in 12 of his last 13 league outings.

Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino has served up four sets of double-digits in his last six starts and has moved to just two points off Aguero in second in the FPL forward standings. He is, however, currently involved in an FA enquiry following Friday’s altercation and exchange with Everton’s Mason Holgate.

Voters may also consider taking a punt on an Arsenal player. The Gunners travel to Bournemouth desperate to make amends for yesterday’s FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest and two successive league draws, to West Brom and Chelsea.

The Cherries last kept a clean sheet in Gameweek 13 and since then have shipped 20 goals, with only Stoke conceding more.

Three goals and an assist in his last four league run outs again makes Alexis Sanchez (11.8) an explosive differentia, although one that comes with risk attached as speculation mounts over a rumoured move to Manchester City.

Mesut Ozil (9.3), with two goals in his last quartet of starts and Alexandre Lacazette (10.3), with three assists over the same period, could also plunder the points against Eddie Howe’s erratic defence.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 23 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

No. don't know how anyone could pick a keeper. Can just about see the merit of captaining a defender like otamendi and Alonso that can still score if they concede

A rival of mine tripple captained Grant (stoke) last season during the dgw when they played Boro/Mcy.

everyone else was captaining mcy attackers, partiuclarly Kun
which was a total disaster , as you may remember.

he walked away with over 50 pts for Grant.

You always look for the chance of the biggest possible haul when deciding on a Captain, DDG has one double figure haul, Salah 9, Kane has 7, Firmino, Sterling, KdB 6 ... Kun 3 😉

      Wouldn’t captain a keeper.
He will most likely get 6-8 points this week.

My bet would be 6, as I can’t see Stoke having a lot of shots and I think United will score a couple.

From next GW and the coming month:

    a) Silva + Firmino

    b) Choopu-Moting + Aguero

B has CM with great fixtures and Aguero with two juicy Captain fixtures. A is probably a bit more balanced though.

    Thoughts?

In my opinion Choupo-Moting is not solid. A lot of games with one or two points.

Choupers fixtures and kun captain for NEW WBA (maybe bur too) very nice as a differential punt if you want to try to rise the ranks, Hansel. I'd also be worried about Dilva due to the sad circumstances that mean he's always going to be a doubt currently.

Might be worth rolling with B and taking the risk - I think they could score similarly.

Gross has good fixtures. Not too sure on him though. I can't even afford him though, so taking a punt on Albrighton (5.5) to fit Aguero in.

Masuaku is an absolute tub of lard - one assist all season, a walking suspension waiting to happen - avoid like the plague

terrific midfield but beyond that I don't really like this - defence is not strong enough at all for a WC and where is Chelsea attack given fixtures?

pay the extra for Alonso and downgrade Rooney or Firmino

    Appreciate a couple more views

The only essential for this week is how to get Lingard in. Need some help as not enough money itb without losing someone I'd rather not!

Can free up max £1.4m through downgrading DCL and Duffy but that would mean starting on a hit.

What about: Vertonghen, Carroll >> Lingard, Long/ TAA/?

    1FT £0.3itb

    DDG, Elliot
    Alonso, Otamendi, Vertonghen, Ogbonna, Dffy
    Sterling, Son, Salah, Arnie, Carroll
    Kane, Firmino, DCL

    Advice appreciated!

Not worried you're overthinking it? Surely Son to Lingard is staring you in the face, plus you then have £££ to reinvest. Can understand the reluctance to lose Sonny but it's a risk either way really - if you do Vertonghen those alternatives you'd be actively buying would be difficult to stomach if it were me 🙂

I hear what you're saying but Son is in a great run of form and my thinking was to have a super-strong midfield (by doing Carroll > Lingard) to provide options if there are injuries/ bans

Yep that could work - I like that approach too. I have removed Son myself - was only ever a punt for the dgw - as I'm freeing up funds to bring Kun in OR just for onward flex if I decide against reaching for the comfort blanket.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

    Captain Lingard or Kane ?

Lingard: in form, Stoke weak and managerless, differential captain

Kane: can destroy teams on his day with the right feed from teammates, but Everton may park the bus effectively. Probably the #1 captain this GW all around FPL

This year's most important poll for me. If Kane or Hazard do not get an overwhelming majority, I will happily not captian one of them and go for either Pogba or Lingard.

I think it is dangerous if a player you own is captained around or more than 1/3 teams and you find yourself not captaining him. But this time, I genuinely belive no player will be so widely accepted as a captain and I am thinking of a ManU armband.

Following your rationale I think that you'd better have another look at the current poll standings. Kane has almost as many votes as all the others put together, so it would be indeed dangerous to go against the trend.
However, if he blanks it would be a huge advantage if you can pick a high scoring alternative.

That's exactly what I was fearing. I know myself. I won't dare not captaining Kane unless his captaincy is less than 29%. I am still not such a gamlbler. I wish I were...

Yep I think in a week when it's not clear who to captain a nice punt on someone like Lingard or Pogba could pay dividends. If Kaku had been fit, firing, consistent and in all squads there wouldn't even be a debate here!

As he has tried to do pretty much every single game, yet even Bournemouth broke through twice. They've conceded the highest number of chances, as the article says, and they're up against Kane, in the open spaces of Wembley. Very easy to see why people might think the Everton bus won't be big enough.

Because of the risk. Linguard or Pogba are unlikely to hit more than 12. Kane is unlikely to hit more than 17. People are assessing the maximum risk regardless of the ins and outs of what we think will happen in this particular game

8 goals in last 4 starts in all comps = good form
      Highly involved in team goals
      Explosive
      Nailed on for 90 mins
      Highly owned + highly captained.
      Everton def not very solid
Lack of other clear cut options + people tend to be more comfortable captaining expensive players

Probably many more people initially picked these low priced midfielders than their forward equivalents.

probably because a 4.5m mid is more commontly owned at the start. at 343 prevails .

4.5m fws rarely become massive bandwagons at the start of the season.

it is an intersting find though.

    Current team:

    De Gea

    1) DCL Alli to Aguero Albrighton (-8)

Debating whether to sell Christensen or Mee for Alonso.

I like Chelsea's fixtures so would be happy to double up but if Chelsea advance to the cup final, they miss gwk 28, a week in which Mee has Southampton at home.

Is this reason enough to sell Christensen over Mee or am I overthinking it? I also have 3x United & 2x City who will most likely miss gwk 28 too

    1. Licious Lizard (delete acc)
      8 years, 6 months ago

Mee is still great value depending on when you bought him. And if you can bench in GW 24 and 26, he has good fixtures as well.
Christensen good value as well if he’s nailed. I don’t suspect Luiz will play in the league.

I still have Coutinho in my team because i dont want to do -4 and planning tonget rid of him next week.

    He currently have red flag.
    His price can still drop?

    1. Pasqualinho
      • 17 Years
      8 years, 6 months ago

It shouldn't do. Normally, however, players status flag is set to 'Unavailable' when they leave the Premier League, however Coutinho's is still at 'Doubtful' - so this may mean he can still drop as people transfer him out. So I wouldn't be 100% that his current price is locked.

      1. FotnikPL
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 6 months ago

Coutinho is red flagged. He was 75% chance of playing and around -80% at price changes sites. When FPL flagged him red his rate at Fix was reset and currently is -28%. At FPL statistics was reset too but still showing 0.0 and this suggests it's locked.

Come on it's just a -4. What if your expected starters get rotated and you need your full bench?
The player you transfer in for him can score more than 0.

Final positions on my WC (4th and 5th defenders).

    A) Elliot, Mee, Duffy
    B) Pope, Masuaku, TAA

I have Adrian who will be my main keeper if I go with A. Also have VVD so having TAA is not optional, since it might hinder me to double up on Liverpool attackers if it would come to that.
I was on B because I like the idea of Pope and Adrian, but just noticed downgrading Pope might actually be better to get more viable rotating options.

Even when fit he won't walk straight back into the starting eleven as Darlow's played OK whilst he's been out, Newcastle will likely try to bring in a GK during this window as well as I don't think Rafa's keen on either long term.
