It takes 210 minutes and penalties for Chelsea to finally beat Norwich in the FA Cup third round, while Swansea City also progress, but Bournemouth crash out.

Chelsea’s win over the Canaries came with some major collateral damage for both coach Antonio Conte and any number of his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) counterparts.

The Blues were seconds away from a 1-0 win, courtesy of Michy Batshuayi’s goal from a low Kenedy cross, when the Championship side equalised.

Thirty unwanted minutes of extra time duly followed, during which Pedro and Alvaro Morata were sent off, their bookable offences both including dives in the penalty area. Willian also saw yellow for the same sin.

The nine men still left on the pitch then took the tie to penalties and a 5-3 spot-kick win resulted.

That, however, was as good as it got for the home side.

The two Spaniards will now miss Saturday lunchtime’s trip to Brighton, which has prompted a further collapse in Morata’s ownership.

The striker has scored just once in eight Gameweeks, with more than a million managers moving him on as a result.

He remains the most sold player going into the weekend, with a further 133,000+ getting rid as his ownership heads towards the 800,000 mark – from a season-high of more than two million.

Goals have been a major issue for Conte’s side recently. They’d suffered three straight 0-0 stalemates in all competitions prior to last night’s result, which itself was the Blues’ fifth consecutive drawn match.

Losing Morata, however out of form he might be, isn’t exactly helpful then, particularly as his understudy, Batshuayi, had a poor match despite his goal.

Conte may well now deploy Eden Hazard, who came on in extra time last night, up front at Brighton.

That’s potentially good news for the 7.1% of managers who have stuck by the Belgian through an eight-Gameweek run in which he’s produced just one goal and a single assist.

But the midfielder has struggled for a goal threat in the false nine role, and with Pedro unavailable, Conte will have to re-think his attacking strategy anyway.

When not using Morata, the Italian has gone for a front three of Hazard, Pedro and Willian – a combination he won’t be able to use at the Amex Stadium.

As if all that wasn’t enough for the coach to consider, last night’s victory does nothing to ease his side’s fixture congestion.

Chelsea remain in four competitions.

They’ll complete their EFL Cup semi-final with Arsenal next Wednesday, follow that up with an FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Newcastle on the Sunday and then entertain Bournemouth in Gameweek 25 just three days later.

Should they progress in both cup competitions, they’ll have an FA Cup fifth round tie on the weekend of February 17, a Champions League Round of 16 match against Barcelona on the Tuesday after that and then the EFL Cup final on the following Sunday.

On current form, all of that might be a moot point, but Chelsea’s squad is starting to look decidedly thin anyway, particularly in the attacking areas.

Rotation is, as ever, inevitable.

An FA Cup win against Newcastle would mean a fifth round tie between league matches at home to West Brom and a huge clash at Old Trafford against Man United.

Conte certainly rang the changes last night, retaining only two players – Cesar Azpilicueta and Tiemoue Bakayoko – from the team that drew 0-0 with Leicester City at the weekend.

That was good news for the 26.0% who own Marcos Alonso as the Spaniard was rested from the squad.

But despite a fine short-term schedule (bha BOU wat WBA), all is not well at Chelsea and – Alonso aside – investment in their prime assets looks increasingly vexed.

Swansea strikers step up

Goals from Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Bony took Swansea City into the fourth round at the expense of Championship high-fliers Wolves.

Bony’s winner, from a Tom Carroll cross, was only the Ivorian’s third goal of an injury-hit season – he’s not scored in the league since Gameweek 16.

But the opener from Ayew, a superb individual effort, confirmed the Ghanaian international’s fine current form – he’s also found the net three times in the last five Gameweeks, only four of which were starts.

His ownership has been quietly rising since Gameweek 20 as a result, and he’s now in 7.2% of FPL squads as a productive budget (5.1) third forward.

More than 91,000 managers have jumped on board going into Gameweek 24, although the Swans’ immediate schedule involves a visit from Liverpool and a trip to Arsenal.

After that, however, things pick up (lei BUR bha WHU hud SOT) and Ayew looks well-placed to take advantage.

He was one of only three players – Alfie Mawson and Carroll were the others – to retain their places from the side that drew with Newcastle last weekend as coach Carlos Carvalhal made it abundantly clear that Premier League safety takes priority.

But they won nonetheless and now face a tie away at League Two outfit Notts County that suggests advancement to the fifth round is well within their grasp.

If that’s the case, they’ll have matches at home to Burnley and away at Brighton either side of that tie.

Chastened Cherries

There was one Premier League casualty last night as Bournemouth bowed out 3-0 away at Wigan.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe made eight changes to the side that started the 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday, and it showed.

The defeat sets up a classic ‘concentrate on the league’ scenario for Bournemouth, which is just as well for a team a mere four points above the relegation zone.

From a Fantasy perspective, the good news was that in-form striker Callum Wilson (5.8) had the night off.

He’s scored three times in four Gameweeks and is picking up new owners as a result.

More than 73,000 FPL managers have bought him this week, making him the seventh most popular pick of Gameweek 24, as the Cherries embark on a strong schedule (whu che STK hud NEW lei).

On another note, Bournemouth could now be guaranteed their fixture for Gameweek 31 when the FA Cup Quarter-Finals take place.

Howe’s men face West Brom in that set of fixtures and, unless the Baggies overcome Liverpool in their fourth round tie, that match will join Stoke vs Everton as a “lock-in” for Gameweek 31.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The Chelsea Blues

Despite their strong fixtures Chelsea look out of sorts currently as they look to navigate an exceptionally busy run of games across the New Year.

Is Aloneso the only way to go?

Where now for Morata's 14.3% ownershp - surely a blank this weekend is the final straw, following his red?

What of Hazard? Is he just simply not worth the outlay?

Are there any other Chelsea options we are unfairly ignoring? Willian perhaps? Or Fabregas?

The RC yesterday was only a blessing for me to lose Morata for Kun. Was so hesitant losing any of the CHE players given the fixtures but not now.. Only got Courtois. And considering GW28 possible blank, Courtois is enough imo.

Probably just Alonso. But I'm biased now as got Morata early for the 'amazing fixture run' (and held and held...)

I think Willian is a perfect "1 week punt" for this weekend.
Hazard not worth the possible hit it would cost for most.
Then after the Brighton game, I'll be swapping Willian for Ramsey providing he plays an advanced role this weekend.
      That's my current plan anyway

One last go for Hazard at Brighton for me. Will end up getting an assist probably, making me keep and then blank the next three. However good a player he is,he just isn't a good FPL option. Biggest troll of the game imo. Hope he goes to Madrid next season.

Chelsea have been a real pain all season. I've had double-CHE-defence twice already this season and it didn't work out. Now I have only Courtois, but am so reluctant to get in Alonso because, well, they're rubbish and I don't want to double-up again. They look tired and unmotivated. I still don't know what to do about Alonso, though. Would be an easier decision if I didn't have Courtois.

Picking Christensen over Alonso in GW14 WC seemed a good move until GW20.(30pts each) Last 4 weeks has killed me 33pt difference. Would have had me top 100.
Hazard went for for Son - GW 19 - no regrets. Too many cheaper mids to make Hazard an option.
Morata - even with lack of striker options - he's not worth it even at 8.5/9m. Half his points came in 1st 6 GWs.
No other Chelsea options. Willian flatters to deceive. Too much rotation/ltd game minutes to make Chelsea mids interesting.
Alonso had 6 goals, 5 assists, 15 CS last year. Already got 6 goals, an assist and 10 CS this season. With top 10k ownership so high has to be essential if you want to do well.
A nailed Christensen would still be good value in that Chelsea defence.

Jonty I'd love to know what you think of Christensen as an asset moving forward. I got him in just in time for him to be dropped/rested/ill/whatever and I'm considering swapping him out on a FT - possibly for Stones.

His benching last night could be seen as a positive, but it wasn't a positive benching in the same way that it was for Alonso. It could be seen as a missed opportunity for him to play himself into a bit of form. I'm really not confident about his chances of starting the next game.

I've been rolling with a defensive double up of Courtois & Alonso which has been doing well. See no reason to change for the time being and none of their attackers look worth it at the moment.

I have Alonso and Hazard. With those beautiful fixtures and Alonso's shots being at equal level with Hazard's, indeed, he is the way to go, the sole Chelsea player worth of any investment, as well as being an essential. That is the perfect asset to own; essential and sufficient. For me, yesterday seal Hazard's end. I will happily downgrade him tomorrow and acquire either Agüero or Firmino (in lieu of DCL) for a hit.

Opted to sell Morata for Wilson a few days back and pretty thankful now. Leaves me with £5.4m ITB to upgrade #1 Magic Bean to Mahrez. That'll still leave me with £1.3m to upgrade Mee/Kenny/Masuaku to Jones to cover Man Utd defence. Only now have Alonso, having sold Hazard for Son to afford Alonso!

Aguero doubters seem to be forgetting that he scored a brace against Burnley two weeks ago, or does that not count because it was in the FA Cup? He then scored in a 20 min cameo vs Bristol City. I'm not saying he is good value, of course he isn't - but this 'out of form' stuff is a bit of a stretch imo

Kane was considered bad value once, still is by some - still gets points, and plenty of great value options to offset that overpay anyway.

It''s quite easy. That's a 3-5-2 structure but you have 4 premium defenders. Downgrade one to a cheapie to rotate with Chilwell (an Everton or Stoke defender would work) and upgrade Christensen to Alonso

You might need to shave a little more off eslewhere but a GK pair like Foster/Adrian would do that. It's not far away once you have adjusted the defence anyway.

I like it, but Christensen now seems a slighty loose pick for a WC team.

And Elliott doesn't worry you ?
Downgrade Mahrez to Albrighton would be enough for you to get Alonso ? Mahrez could still be transfered out ... I wouldn't invest on him now.

    Pope
    Otamendi Jones Ogbonna
    Salah Arnautovic Sterling Mahrez Lingard
    Kane (c) Firmino

    Speroni Mee Calvert-Lewin Hunemeir

    1 FT, 3.1 ITB

    What to do here please??

Is Firmino >> Aguero a good move?? Or should I look at something else?

    Thanks.

Already did Morata to Firmino earlier in the week so have 1.5m itb, anything else worth a hit? Obvious concerns are DCL playing time and RLC injury.

    Courtois
    Otamendi Jones Azpi
    Salah Sterling Son Lingard
    Kane Firmino DCL

    Bench: Adrian, Duffy, RLC, Hune

Nothing in bank and feel bit stuck with Richarlison. Only feasible moves would be to Ox or Albrighton so thinking may as well keep and hope his time comes v Leicester!

    Adrián
    Otamendi Jones Alonso

      upgrade one of your defender

West Ham have great fixtures so I have to hold, especially at that price. Kenny is more prone to rotation but after Big Sam's comments after the Spurs game I think they will start to get more CS's.

Schindler would be the one to replace but not too sure who to get for £4.9m...

    Thoughts on this:

Hate to downgrade Kane but Son might partly cover the points, and a massive upgrade to Erikesn and Gross.
