West Brom and Liverpool are involved in one of the more incident-packed FA Cup ties of recent centuries, while Spurs need a late goal from the usual suspect to save them from an inglorious exit that is instead saved for West Ham.

Five goals and three major video assistant referee (VAR) decisions ensured Saturday night FA Cup fourth round football produced primetime entertainment at Anfield.

The 3-2 win for the Baggies also confirmed that Liverpool’s Gameweek 31 home fixture with Watford will go ahead as planned now that both sides are out of the cup.

The competition’s quarter-finals collide with Gameweek 31’s schedule on the weekend of March 17 and, at present, the only league matches certain to go ahead are the Liverpool fixture and Stoke City v Everton.

Today’s matches, replays and the entire fifth round will add more fixtures to that list, but the news that popular Liverpool players Mohamed Salah (55.1%) and Roberto Firmino (40.1%) should be in league action (barring injury) will help ease the otherwise complex planning required from Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Both were front and centre of a wild tie at Anfield, Firmino opening the scoring with a divine chip after Salah’s effort was saved by Albion keeper Ben Foster, while the Egyptian fired his 25th goal of the season to make it 2-3 late on.

Firmino also missed a penalty, belatedly awarded when VAR was used to confirm a foul on Salah. This miss could lead to yet another change in Liverpool’s designated spot-kick taker.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have now missed six of their last ten penalties in all competitions, all spurned by four different players – Origi, Firmino, Salah and Milner.

With Milner only a bit-part player this campaign, Salah may now be given a second opportunity to lay claim.

Both sides were at close to full strength at Anfield, with West Brom bouncing back from Firmino’s goal with a quick brace from Jay Rodriguez.

The striker smashed home after being put through by Chris Brunt before doubling his tally when he steered in Kieran Gibbs’ low cross.

The Baggies had a third goal ruled out for offside by VAR, only for the technology to then confirm a Joel Matip own goal when the Reds defender turned Craig Dawson’s cross-shot into the net on the stroke of half-time.

Salah’s late strike – from a Firmino assist – set up a frantic finale, but West Brom rode out the storm.

Rodriguez caught the eye throughout, suggesting he is close to the form that earned him an England call-up before long-term injury stalled his career.

Priced at 5.5 and owned by just 1.2%, he is in fine form, with two goals and an assist from his last four league starts and five in six in all competitions. He’s also now confirmed as the Baggies’ designated penalty taker.

But trips to Man City and Chelsea over the next three Gameweeks will deter most from immediate investment. West Brom’s fixtures do ease for six Gameweeks following the Chelsea match before ties with Man United, Liverpool and Spurs usher in a testing season run-in.

The win also came at a price, with Gibbs and Hal Robson-Kanu both withdrawn through injury, while Jonny Evans and Jake Livermore also limped through to the final whistle. All four injuries are reported as hamstring issues, which gives manager Alan Pardew some major headaches ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Manchester City.

Owners of City’s attacking assets – particularly Sergio Aguero – will be far less concerned.

As for Liverpool, Klopp made his FA Cup intentions clear by sending out a strong line-up.

The return from injury of left-back Alberto Moreno complicates matters in defence, although Liverpool’s resilience remains an issue – they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet for six matches in all competitions and the introduction of Virgil van Dijk has so far failed to solve their apparent vulnerability at set-plays.

Kane to the rescue

Mutterings about managers not respecting the FA Cup were muted by the teamsheets at Anfield, and Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino was another to send out a strong side.

Not that it did him much good at Newport County, as it required a Harry Kane equaliser eight minutes from time to spare his blushes.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and midfielder Christian Eriksen were again absent as they recover from illness, while Son Heung-min, Dele Alli and Ben Davies all started on the bench.

But Pochettino still fielded a number of regular starters, with Kane handed a striker partner in Fernando Llorente as he went with a 4-4-2 formation.

That proved to be a miscalculation as Newport, aided by strong wind and a bumpy pitch, had the best of the first half and finished it a goal to the good.

Spurs reverted to three at the back after the break, with Son, and later Alli and Davies, introduced to chase the match. It took most of the half for Newport to finally succumb when Kane tapped in Son’s flick from a corner.

A replay might not seem like great news for Spurs, or Fantasy managers trying to read their rotation.

But that match will fall between league fixtures with Liverpool (Gameweek 26) and Arsenal (Gameweek 27) and at least provides some definitive clues as to Pochettino’s thinking for the Gunners clash.

It should at least reveal the likely full-back selection, and may also calm fears on the selection of Son.

While Spurs got a scare, Pochettino will surely be content fielding a second-string line-up for the replay, given the importance and difficulty of those two league fixtures.

As for Kane, he’s now scored in three successive matches in all competitions, although an immediate schedule that also involves Man United continues to prompt sales, particularly in light of Aguero’s imminent meeting with West Brom.

More than 87,000+ managers have sold Kane so far, making him the fourth most sold player ahead of Gameweek 25. Indeed, the striker is one of three Spurs players in the five most transferred-out – Eriksen and Son are the others.

Hammers Take Casualties

West Ham boss David Moyes made six changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Bournemouth for the trip to Wigan.

His intention was clearly to concentrate on the league, and he got his wish as his side went down 2-0.

But the circumstances of the defeat were chastening, with Arthur Masuaku seeing red for spitting at an opponent and Pedro Obiang stretchered off with a serious knee injury.

Masuaku will now miss six matches for his indiscretion, which Moyes described as ‘despicable’, meaning the defender will not be available again until Gameweek 31’s visit from Manchester United – if the Red Devils are not involved in an FA Cup quarter-final tie, that is.

The Frenchman had enjoyed a modest upturn in ownership, to 2.3%, when West Ham played two matches in Gameweek 22. But his recent output has been poor, with just eight points from his last six starts.

Obiang, meanwhile, had started all but two of the Hammers’ league matches since Gameweek 11, with Moyes delivering a gloomy assessment of his injury post-match.

“We think it is medial ligament but we will have him sent for a scan to tell us exactly what’s wrong.”

New midfield signing Joao Mario was given a 45-minute run-out, but the side’s resources are now severely stretched, with key men Marko Arnautovic and Manuel Lanzini both sidelined by hamstring injuries.

And those players who remain fit and available offer little attraction to Fantasy managers, despite a schedule (CRY bha WAT liv swa BUR) of some promise.

Saints edge past Watford

Southampton’s mini-revival – they’ve drawn three of their last four league matches – was boosted further by a narrow cup victory over Watford.

Jack Stephens scored the only goal, from a Shane Long rebound, just four minutes into the tie, which was new Hornets boss Javi Gracia’s first match in charge.

The Saints then held on comfortably enough as the visitors mustered just one shot on target all day.

A rare clean sheet – they’ve managed just five in the league this season – bodes well ahead of an excellent run of opponents through to Gameweek 33.

But an injury to full-back Ryan Bertrand, at 4.7% one of only two Southampton players with more than nominal FPL ownership, makes him a doubt for Wednesday’s vital home match against Brighton.

Jeremy Pied replaced him and could now start the midweek contest.

Gracia’s introduction to English football was less than ideal, with reports of Jose Holebas – one of four changes the new coach made to the side – arguing with disgruntled Watford fans after the defeat.

There were also precious few clues available as to Gracia’s tactical intentions.

Known to be a fan of 4-4-2, he set up his side yesterday in a 4-2-3-1 in which Andre Gray was the lone striker, before reverting to his favoured formation and then switching to a 4-3-3 by the end.

Wednesday’s trip to Stoke City will likely provide further clues as to any potential on offer.

Second string Foxes cruise

Leicester City boss Claude Puel talked up the FA Cup prior to yesterday’s match at Peterborough, declaring the competition ‘a big objective for the club’.

He then made ten changes to his team, but that didn’t stop the Foxes from romping to a 5-1 win in which Kelechi Iheanacho and new signing Fousseni Diabate impressed and scored two goals apiece.

Wilfred Ndidi was the other scorer, with assists coming from Adrien Silva and Christian Fuchs.

The presence of the latter in the team was significant, suggesting strongly that Ben Chilwell – who was on the bench at the ABAX Stadium – remains Puel’s first choice left-back.

The 21-year-old has started the last two matches in the league and, at 4.3, is a cheap route into a defence that has kept back-to-back clean sheets and has a schedule (eve SWA mci STK BOU wba) which promises more of the same.

Indeed, Leicester’s fixtures are set fair until the end of the season, with only Man City, Arsenal and Spurs representing major tests across the remaining 14 Gameweeks.

Key assets Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy remained on the bench yesterday as the prospects of a side who have won two and drawn one of their last three league matches remain solid.

Elsewhere…

Huddersfield could only draw 1-1 with Birmingham as coach David Wagner made seven changes to the side that lost at Stoke last weekend.

Striker Steve Mounie scored from a Florent Hadergjona assist for the Terriers.

New signing Alex Pritchard was cup-tied, while midfielder Danny Williams picked up a knock that makes him a doubt for Tuesday’s home match with Liverpool.

Glenn Murray’s knee won Brighton their cup tie at Middlesbrough 1-0, a clearance ricocheting off the striker and into the net in the 90th minute of the tie.

Seagulls’ boss Chris Hughton made seven changes to the team beaten 4-0 by Chelsea in Gameweek 24, with well-owned assets Pascal Gross (15.0%) and Lewis Dunk (3.7%) kept on the bench and Shane Duffy (4.0%) not even in the squad.

Swansea City were held to a 1-1 draw by League Two team Notts County.

Renato Sanches was recalled to the side after a hamstring injury, only to suffer what looked like a recurrence of the issue after 30 minutes.

His replacement, Ki Sung-yeung, then set up Luciano Narsingh’s opener.

Only three players used in Monday’s win over Liverpool started yesterday’s tie, with defender Alfie Mawson one of the trio, while top scorer Jordan Ayew was given just 20 minutes from the bench.

Fellow striker Tammy Abraham was back in action after five matches out injured.

Spread the love – or focus on one true love

Sanchez has caused quite stir among many Fantasy managers, who are looking to get him in ahead of Huddersfield’s trip to Old Trafford.

But as many have found getting him in means sacrifices elsewhere.

Can Kane be ditched? Surely Salah has to stay? What of avoiding the likes of Alonso or a Manchester United defender?

Hall of Fame number one Jay is among many others wondering whether it is best to focus on one true love for Alexis, or instead spread that love around the squad.

    https://twitter.com/JEgersdorff/status/957540720725970944

Is Salah, Kane AND Sanchez achievable?

What sacrifices have to be made?

What would be good is for you to post your teams with Sanchez in – whether he’s already there or a team you are tinkering with but yet to press the button on.

Also those without Sanchez feel free to post your teams.

Would be good to assess whether it is better to have a balanced squad or focus most of your resources on only few players.

The key sacrifice on Sanchez, Kane and Salah teams I've seen on twitter so far is having to play one of Quaner or a 4.5 mid every week. Or go for that 4.5 double pivot set up that proved so unsuccessful earlier this season.

I am doing Arnie and Kane > Aguero and Shaqiri in preparation for bringing in Sanchez for free next week. I will have to lose Sterling to get him in.

That will give me Salah, Sanchez and Aguero as my three big hitters

Kane will only be short term (next three fixtures then switch).

Sterling has tough upcoming fixtures and I think Aguero and Otamendi will negate it somewhat.

Sterling hasn’t been as impressive recently

Quite simple for me having tried it now! Just swapped Stering out for Danchez and changed Azpilicueta to a cheaper defender like Gomez. Gives me Kane, Kun, Salah and no crap mids(ish).

Then best way I can get Sanchez is to drop Aguero and Lingard and bring in a striker for 6.3 or below.

It would leave me with a 4-4-2

        DDG
        Alonso Otamendi Mee Simpson
        Sanchez Salah Mahrez Sane
        Kane (6.3m striker)

        Subs: Elliot Carroll Quaner Mbemba

The fact I’ve got Aguero makes it a lot easier for me to do the Sanchez move and keep the Salah and Kane. When Jesus comes back I will definiatly consider this because I’d rather have a 11.7m starter than wait every week for the team sheets behind my sofa hoping my investment starts.

I would have to lose Otamendi and Pogba to get Sanchez and 4.3 defender.
I would also have to play a 5.4 mid every week (Arnautovic replacement)
Decided that Pogba could be good enough to have and he may start getting even better returns with Sanchez in the team.

      Strugling with this all week.

      Sanchez plan:

Arnautovic, Son, DCL ---> Sanchez, Ulloa, Gudmunsson (or other max 5.0)--> not keen on either

      Not Sanchez plan:

Arnautovic, Son ---> Mane (fixtures, gw31, differential), Shaqiri (or other max 7.4 with DCL to Ulloa)

      Which is better?

I've got several issues with Sanchez.

For starters, at Arsenal, he was arguably their main source of goals.

For all Lukaku's recent struggles, we have to consider that he's potentially stronger as a goal scorer than any striker that played with Sanchez at Arsenal recently.

Then we've got the goals from midfield. Did Arsenal have players like Lingard and Martial who could push 15 goals a season? That's what they seem capable of at their current rate.

Then we've got goals from Pogba to throw in too. What do we think? Perhaps 5,6, maybe even 7 more goals to come from him?

If we add all this up, either United are suddenly going to score hatfuls of goals, or Sanchez is going to struggle to repeat his rate of output at Arsenal.

With Mourinho likely to be playing a results game in the end season and perhaps rotating key assets if CL progress continues, I'd say we won't see the Arsenal version of Sanchez.

Added to that, at least one of Martial, Lingard and Pogba is going to offer value, surely?

I think he will monopolise set pieces and penalties, which certainly helps.

That Huddersfield fixture is just so enticing. I’m getting him in as I see him as the best captain choice.

Sure, he looks a great option.

But I think we need to see more of him before we can be certain what we're going to get.

Is he going to be as selfish at United? As I mention, he's arguably surrounded by players capable of scoring goals. I think at Arsenal the onus was more on him.

True that, but the most likely to haul in 26 vs HUD is Sanchez. Will be too early, then, to have a clear idea of who will get more points between Martial, Lingard and Pogba.

Sanchez IN and C next week for me, and I will be very happy to downgrade to whoever seems the best value a few weeks later

The points spread argument is very flimsy, it sounds like it comes from someone who has no easy way to get him in so looks for reasons to comfort themselves, never quite understood it.

Two teams in the league spread their goals around more than anyone, Liverpool and Spurs, Salah has scored 25 goals and Kane 30, spreading goals doesn't seem to harm their rate of scoring, no reason it will with Sanchez, you can bet everyone at United will be wanting him to hit the ground running as will Jose, the early weeks are the ones to gamble on before everyone gets him in & any chance of a leap is watered down.

The games against Huddersfield and Newcastle are prime captaincy fixtures, those who can fit him in and brave enough could reap massive rewards.

Also, I think the Sanchez signing has come a bad time for the propoganda machine, they've just settled on convincing everyone to jump on last week's points with Aguero and now Sanchez has come along to create more issues.

Fortunately he plays Spurs at Wembley so everyone can have a look, he loves a goal at Wembley and also against Spurs, will be interesting to see if Sanchez gets pushed out as 'must have' if he does anything and all the issues are brushed under the carpet.

I might make the move, but would be content with Martial if I knew for sure he was safe on the left flank with Sanchez as No. 10. I actually really like the look of JRod though, wouldn't mind getting him in if Firm looks cack.

The way I see it at Arsenal he was the main man, pens free kicks etc, but at Utd the points will be spread ..
Pogba Martial Lingard & even Lukaku offer more value..

No doubt he has points potential but at the price tag he would need to be the main Fpl player of the team (Kane Salah Hazard) & I don’t think he will be...

Arsenal have had easy home fixtures & I was never tempted to bring him in for (C)

I have gone for the balanced approach at the minute, and it's very hard to transfer out any of the below, as they could all score double figures in any game.

Having said that, Kane > Kun for a FT for 3 games looks like it might just pay off with captaincy. Getting Alexis or Haz looks a pipe dream with this structure unfortunately. I will focus instead on Lingard upgrade - to Mkhi or Theo after Lingard's next 3 games. Stones may be the downgrade if city keep having caniptions at the back:

      DDG
      Alonso, VVD, Stones
      Salah, Sterling, Pogba, Son, Lingard
      Kane, Firmino
      (Elliott, Kenny, Masuspatku, Mcburnie)

I have kane and kun already in addition to salah sterling and alonso

The only way I can see me getting Sanchez for hudds is if kun gets injured today!

I'll prob so son to pogba midweek so I have some United investment - but Sanchez seems a bridge to far for me...

It's the old captaincy conundrum... for me it's hard to justify more than 2 or 3 big hitters 10.0+ players as you'll only ever Captain one... so I can't see the attraction to having both Kane & Kun (Salah is non-negotiable so will ignore him)

So I think if you're getting Alexis that limits you to choosing one from - Kane, .Kun, Haz. Or possibly even none, choosing to pad out your team with 8.5's instead who will surely keep a close enough pace - Sané, son, Mahrez, Pogba, Firmino, etc

Penalties will be the really intriguing factor IMO. If Utd get a penalty v Spurs, Huddersfield, or Newcastle... and Pogba steps up... that's a very big vote of confidence for an 8.0 Pogba vs spending an extra 4.0 on Alexis

Why does everyone belive Jose will get more out of him than wenger.Jose has ruined many a player . Sanchez pretty much run the show and made his own decisions at Arsenal. He managed Wenger and the team was built round him pretty much . Just wait till Sanchez wants to be the big 'I am" and Jose doesn't like it. He's a spiteful vindictive man . For now. Let's see what happens when Sanchez is trying to score himself instead of giving others the glory. Maybe he will excel, as much as I dislike him he's a world class player but on the other hand do was ADM . I'd be more confident in Wenger getting the best out of Sanchez attacking wise that jose..just based on their styles. It's possible and can be easily done. For me Kun to 4.5er (after Jesus returns and the rotation begins once again) and then upgrading my 5th mid to Sanchez is way to get him, along with having Salah, Kane, Sterling, Alonso and a fine balanced team.

I feel like most of the responses are Aguero 2.0 - people that 'can't' easily fit him in are using value as an excuse to downplay his scoring potential. I think it's Hazard v Sanchez/Lukaku for the armband 26/27 and value is fairly irrelevant for whichever one you choose

Sanchez is not that hard to get in imo. It can usually be done in 2 moves.

I can do Sterling and Mahrez to Sanchez and someone up to 5.7. Sterling I'm happy to lose now he is hugging the right touchline.

But will that offer more value than two midfielders in the sweet spot of the 8m to 9m bracket? Probably not.

I'm one of the few people on here who has held Sanchez for any serious length of time this season and he was very damaging to my rank.

I wouldn't rule it out completely, though, because he is one of the few explosive players we have.

I personally feel other Utd attacking assets are a better option I.e. Pogba.
His output will be improved with Sanchez in the team. Also keeping a close eye on lukaku. At the start of the season lukaku was the most owned and talked about player. He will come back to form in the second half of the season I expect

I have a back-up Sanchez plan (in 3 moves), pending the eye test against Spurs:

      Foster
      Alonso Ota Gomez Hegazi
      Sanchez Hazard Salah Sterling
      Kun Firmino
      Subs: Elliott, Ogbonna, McArthur, McBurnie

The sacrifice here will be depending heavily on West Brom to do good defensively. Not unthinkable seeing their xGC is right up there with the best (5th in last 5).

Relatively easy to get Sanchez if you are an Aguero owner looking to sell up prior to Jesus' return.

Thinking Son and Aguero to Sanchez and Rodriguez/Wilson - leaves something like 3.5m in the bank to invest elsewhere.

Lack of decent striker options between 6-9 million means side can be rebalanced by compromising upfront.

      Eriksen > Sanchez

I can easily do Kun to Sanchez when the time comes which has been the plan since it was obvious Sanchez was moving & Jesus was due back from injury.

But unless you're going to captain Sanchez over Kane or Salah the differential seems to be very expensive.
GW26 aside can't see many fixtures where Salah or Kane aren't viable captaincy options after GW28 (hopefully got Kun until then).
Even if Sanchez reproduces his best earlier Arsenal form 6.5/7 PPG that's too much money for a non-captaincy option.

Think it's a wait and see job. Give him a chance to settle.

it's a solid move for one GW but my point is how often do you see him being a clearly better option over Kane or Salah after that? If it's not fairly regularly then he is probably too expensive an option.

Chasing in private league, dont think many/any will het Sanchez that early. Could turn out to be a flop but way I see it he is the best captain pick for GW26 - first game at Old Trafford, he will score, right?

Not an issue for me to get rid two or three GWs later, when it’s a bit clearer who is the (next) best pick between Martial, Pogba and Lingard.

Dont have to play a 4.5 mid or striker. I can get this with Son and Arnie to Sanchez and Shaqiri. Downgrade DCL would free up more funds, I've got 2.7 in the bank.

I do not think any 8.0+ in my team (Salah, Sterling, Kane, Firmino) can be sacrificed for Sanchez. I can only hope he helps improve Lingard and Pogba.

Plus, I have enough captain options and Sanchez would only confuse my solid choices.

I can ditch Kane for the next 3 games, yes, but getting Agüero seems more rewarding then -4ing for Sanchez.

I've got a high team value, could go with this 4-5-1 team:

      Adrian Hennessey

      Alonso Otamendi Jones Christensen (Mbemba)
      Sanchez Salah Sterling Mahrez Lingard
      Kane (Quaner - McBurnie)

Sanchez has done nothing all year so why anyone would entertain buying him at 11 mill and disrupting their team totally baffles me.

The warning signs are all there: he plays for a manager with a defensive mindset where there are other attacking options sharing the points.

      Avoid.

I think about something like this:
      DDG Pope
      Jones Azpilicueta Jones Zanka *Bauer
      Salah Sterling *Albrighton *Milivojevic *Sanchez
      Kane Firmino Ayew

      Transfer(s) need:
      Creswell > Bauer
      Lingard > Albrighton
      Arnie > Milivojevic
      Son > Sanchez

      What do you think?

Alexis at 11.7m in a Mourinho team? No, thanks!
Not only that he'll probably kill everyone else as an option, like he did at Arsenal.
But yeah, there will be lots of teams with him, i mean there was a Fellaini bandwagon when he moved to United...

Everybody throwing names out there and all forgetting one mistake we usually do.
Eriksen covers kane, ramsey/ozil covers sanchez (last seasons), and so on.
There's a reason he is so expensive, as kane, haz, kdb...he's top player and he will eventually come out on top. Bold prediction, starting gw25 he will be top scoring fpl.
Buying him at 26 and C for sure

Sorry, very late to the party. it won't cause much trauma to me; of 4 transfers out to get him in, only Otamendi is important:

I'm in the top 3K and nervous about taking risks, but I've decided to go all out and pin the rest of my season on Sanchez.

This will require surgery, taking a -4 hit over the next 2 gameweeks, but it involves losing Arnie and Lanzini, so I can justify that.

Alexis can wait until after the Spurs game so my transfers will be:
      GW24 Arnie/Lanzini for Albrighton/McArthur (benchfodder)
      To do GW25 Otamendi/Lingard for Sanchez/Bauer

      My squad will then be:
Pope Adrian (the only British pope, don't cha know)
      Alonso, Azpil, Jones, Bauer, Long
      Sanchez, Salah, Sterling, Albrighton, McArthur
      Kane, Firmino, Niasse

I'll wait until the last minute as my cheap mid was due to be Obiang, and I've just ceased regretting dumping Sane to get Arnie in 2 weeks ago!

What do folks think of VVD so Far? His record hasn't been great, but the eye test has been good enough from what I've seen. Klopp needs to tighten up at the back though otherwise there's little need for a pool centrehalf.

Can see him getting the 15 pointer game soon tbh, good fixtures are there too. I will probably bring him in as I don't think the others in the same price bracket are good options. City's fixtures are getting more difficult and their defence is in shambles anyway, not to mention if Laporte is coming he (Stones) will be rotated too I guess. Spurs' fixtures is the reason for selling. Arsenal's defence isn't any better than Liverpool imo and if the cs goes at least VVD can grab a goal or assist but I don't think Mustafi or Monreal can do that (Yes, I am aware that they scored but still).
