The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 26

While my current situation is far from desperate, I was somewhat dismayed to discover that my rank had regressed to its original position in Gameweek 18.

That’s somewhat ironic as, back then, my Preamble opened its arms to a brand new and significant signing: Lady Luck.

I can’t help but look back at those words with a wry smile.

I actually acknowledged my good fortune in earning Andreas Christensen’s clean sheet at Huddersfield. Then I went on to thank the Fantasy gods for handing me circumstances that “helped me” to hold onto Alvaro Morata, avoiding a swap to Roberto Firmino.

Oh how that turned on me.

As we know now, Christensen – brought in over Phil Jones back in Gameweek 15 – has since been blighted by the worst passage of Fantasy misfortune in memory.

Meanwhile, that “stroke of luck” that allowed me to keep Morata eventually saw him struck down with a crisis of confidence. Indeed, the only goal he scored from that point on was in an unexpected appearance in the EFL Cup, which got him booked and suspended for the celebration.

That particular preamble now exists as a reminder of how quickly events can turn and how good luck can be reversed.

I’m not bleating; this will be typical in all our seasons we know that we’re often at the mercy of fine margins. But its how we acknowledge and react to our fortune that matters.

I have to look on the events that follow and acknowledge that, while I made errors, some were punished in the extreme.

I always had my doubts on Morata, but even then, I couldn’t predict his run of big misses, his suspension, or indeed Firmino’s burst of Gameweek scores which mark his most consistent and prolific of his Fantasy career. It was a dramatic swing.

Similarly, nobody could have foreseen Christensen’s illness and the 57-minute cameos that followed. Since Gameweek 18, he earned me a single clean sheet and 10 points; Jones has scored 30.

We all make mistakes over the season, but sometimes fortune can play a part in deciding the scale of those blunders.

So while I’ve made no progress since Gameweek 18, I shouldn’t lay all the blame at my own door and rip up my guiding principles and strategy.

I toyed with the idea of going back into my shell, minimising risk and ploughing a more pragmatic “dullard” path for a while. But instead, I feel I should stick to my guns and ride things out.

Back in Gameweek 18, I was attempting to highlight how we all need to respect the luck when it turns our way. Equally, we need to be aware when we’ve been the victim of misfortune and remain calm. This is the game we play.

No matter how much we use data and logic to govern our decisions and predict their outcome, there will always be elements we can’t control.

By investing time and emotion in Fantasy Football, we are at the mercy of the run of the ball, an errant refereeing decision, a flu bug or even player ego.

We have to be wary of throwing blame and abandoning trusted strategies when some of those things conspire against us.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

BT Sport on the verge of collapse.

I was utterly astonished they have so many expensive pundits etc. so many sports just taken away from Sky, UCL, cricket etc.

Apparently they have no where near the subcription levels and cannot afford to run it at a loss anymore funded by thier telephone/internet side of business.

This is a random rant against luck searching called "differentials".

Reasoning behind usual differential seeking: "30+% of managers own certain player, so even if he scores, I will not benefit from it as much as if lower owned player with similar probabilities scores." And so each gameweek we have the "differential pick" discussions.

If you search for differentials, you are harming your long term chances. There is usually some good reason why certain players have a high ownership. You do not buy players for next three games, you buy them to hold for 10 games or more.

Picking Walcott right now is not differential (even though he still has low ownership). Everybody owning Lingard or Richarlison and a spare million should buy him. Everybody owning injured Sane, David Silva and Jesus should do it too. It's pure value: he will play up front, Everton is a good team with good fixtures, and he is positioned as a midfielder in fantasy so he gains clean sheet points and additional point from each goal (compared to strikers). He is future sterling/richarlison/gross etc.

Picking for instance Martial or Pogba, because its ManUtd and a great talent and two easy games in front of them is searching for luck that we like to call "differential". Both of them WILL NOT regularly play an attacking role, because Sanchez and Lukaku both must play. If Pogba gets an attacking role, Martial won't start. If Martial starts, Pogba will be pulled back to pair with Matic. And then there are Rashford and Lingard, the latter owned by 17%, (including me, lol) with a lot of uncertainties. At this moment we do not know what will happen. Reasonable play is waiting to see before buying ManUtd attacking players.

And because most managers are reasonable, Pogba only has 15% ownership even though he is a fantastic overall player at 8 milion. Martial is only owned by 5%, even though he is currently second best midfielder in form (6 points per match), better than Salah, Hazard, or De Bruyne.

Each time some kind of "differential" idea comes up, it is an option full of uncertainties, while there are perfectly viable options for the same price. And sometimes difference seeker gets lucky (Martial scores and Sterling doesn't), but most times heavily owned Sterling or Firmino does his job, and 40% of managers gain another 6 points against differential seeker.

You can only search for differentials after you took care of the basics and your team is value-proof for at least next 5 weeks. True "differential" is not getting a lucky strike, but RECOGNISING VALUE BEFORE THE MASSES: buying Firmino in the week Coutinho left Liverpool, buying Aguero the week Jesus got injured, buying Walcott when Allardyce showed intent of playing him.

There, i said it. And I actually like ManUtd, the case was only picked because it is so explicitly dumb to lunge in when they have just bought Sanchez and the positions on the field are not clear yet.
