Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Falls Short

Tottenham Hotspur dominate the north London derby but almost have to settle for a draw as many Fantasy managers endure a similarly frustrating afternoon.

Harry Kane scored his seventh goal in as many matches against Arsenal to secure a 1-0 win, although the scoreline could, and should, have been considerably more emphatic.

Spurs had three times as many attempts on goal as their rivals and six shots on target to the Gunners’ one, with Kane both the hero and the villain of the piece.

The striker’s winner, from a Ben Davies assist, rewarded the 980,000+ (17.8%) Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who handed him the captaincy.

But that was the only one of four chances, three of which were deemed big opportunties, that Kane managed to convert.

His profligacy cost him the chance of any bonus points and kept Arsenal in the match, with substitute Alexandre Lacazette missing two late chances to grab something from an encounter in which they were second best throughout.

It’s still five goals in five Gameweeks for Kane, but his failure to add any bonus to his six-point haul will be seen as vindication for the decision by many to seek captaincy rewards elsewhere – particuarly if that happened to be Sergio Aguero.

For the first time since Gameweek 21, the Spurs forward was not the most-captained player, with 1,265,966 (22.0%) of armbands instead being handed to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Whether the Egyptian will be able to confirm that decision as the correct one – particularly in light of Aguero’s stunning 21-point haul – remains to be seen.

What is not in doubt is the continued decline of the Spurs midfield as a consistent points-scoring unit.

Son Heung-min, who was sold by 101,000+ going into the weekend, blanked for the fourth successive Gameweek and made way for Erik Lamela on 69 minutes, while Dele Alli (two assists in six matches) and Christian Eriksen (two goals in six) also failed to deliver.

Davies thrives again

Instead, it was the backline that impressed.

Davies’ sixth assist of the season brought him level with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta as FPL’s most creative defender. That has drawn a reaction from the market, with Davies the most signed player ahead of Gameweek 28 – attracting 34,000 owners to this point.

A clean sheet and maximum bonus brought in 12 points for the Welsh international’s 15.1% ownership and they will be hoping he is handed an eighth successive start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 28 if Danny Rose is given the nod for Spurs’ midweek Champions League tie.

Fellow defenders Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez were handed the other bonus points as Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it three straight home clean sheets in the league.

Ramsey misses out

As for Arsenal, the day started badly when the fourth most popular purchase of the Gameweek, Aaron Ramsey, was ruled out with a groin problem.

And it barely improved after that as Arsene Wenger’s uncharacteristically negative tactics, crowding the central areas and inviting crosses, backfired when Kane headed home.

The Gunners’ attacking weapons were also blunted as a result, with the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 27, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, subbed off on 63 minutes after creating precisely zero chances and having no shots.

That was a huge blow to his 288,000+ new managers, while the 235,000+ who brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were equally disappointed.

The striker had no shots on goal, a mere two penalty area touches and 23 touches overall – the fewest of any player who started the match. He was, however, unlucky to be flagged offside when put through in the first half.

All those new managers on Ramsey, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang could well be left to rue their move further as Arsenal entertain Man City next – if, that is, the fixture even goes ahead.

Should City need an FA Cup fifth round replay with Wigan, then their Gameweek 28 match at the Emirates will have to be rescheduled.

The Man City match-up is hardly an ideal opportunity for Arsenal’s defence to step up either.

They’ve now gone nine matches without a clean sheet and with a visit from Pep Guardiola’s free scorers, or a blank, to come next, further sales of Nacho Monreal, who was moved on by 82,000+ this week, look more than likely.

I am kind of hoping that Man City draw their FA Cup game so that I can do Aguero > Kane guilt-free 🙂

Aguero 》Kane is not a hard choice imo. Kane would almost certainly outscore him in the next few games.

Auba needs to prove himself before being considered I'd say. The others are all proven points machines.

However, if you are confident in his talents (I've personally not seen loads of him outside the CL) then he could be a fantastic differential as almost no-one will own him! Go with your instinct.

If. And it's a big if, Aguero plays the next two games and Jesus is back for the mid week match v Arsenal (which is in 19 days!) then Aguero is out for Firmino.

You can't change my mind. He must get a rest soon.

Get him back in the doubles.

      Indeed.
I think getting rid before next PL game is the right decision.

Those bringing him in now are just chasing yesterday’s massive haul - it wont happen again, and he is gonna spend some games on the bench soon

    Aguero Hazard RLC Lingard OUT

What were people's reasons for not owning Aguero? Was it simply a choice between owning him or Kane?

You look at form and fixtures, combined with the injury to Jesus, his comparative value and his fpl history, it was a no brainer. Right?

      6 years, 2 months ago

Seemsa no brainer now but there were many good reasons at the time to not get him, which included:

      - Blank in GW28 (we thought so at the time)
      - We thought Jesus was gonna be back already
      - Kane and Firmino performing well and so there was a reluctance to remove them
      - Kun didn't quite look as good at times this season and his hat-trick 3 weeks ago was quite lucky.

Today is a black day in my FPL season.
    Mane + Aguero >
    Sanchez (c) + Firmino -4.
Been chasing my rival for weeks now and got within 16 points.
I chose this week to make a bold move and well you know the rest...
To make things worse, after he told me he was going to captain Walcott, I log in to see he has changed it to Aguero.
Just to rub salt in the wounds he transfered out Ox > Ramsey who did not play and guess who’s sat number 1 on his bench?
    Yep.... Milicockivic...
Need the FPL gods to shine on me today all though I’ve pretty much resigned myself to an early payout.

Hey guys, 2 FT and 0.2 ITB. What would you suggest here? Ota > Mawson in GW28 followed by Wilson & Rich > Niasse & Mhiki in GW29?

    DDG
    Ota - Alonso - Jones
    Salah (c) - Shaq - Sterling - Lingard
    Kane - Firm - Wilson

    Speroni - Richarlison - Ogbonna - Kenny

My team is identical to yours except Pope/Long/Son vs DDG/Richarlison/Kenny.

I think look at players that will definitely play in GW31 for your Ota and Richarlison replacements, such as VVD and Walcott/Siggy.

Thanks for the tip. I still have all my chips available. Is GW31 a contender to use Free hit or is there likely to be a better GW for that one?

        1. JasonG123
          • 10 Years

Imo the more optimal choice is to use it in GW35 and then WC in 32/33 just focusing on the DGW34 and 37 and without having to worry about 35.

Currently you have 3 players that are playing in GW31 and 5 FTs so you could get 8 on the park with no hits. Decent chance Wilson could play and maybe one other team, so you could get a full team with no hits or maybe one or two hits with a little planning, so I'd try use it in 35 (that it what I'll be doing).

We'll obviously know more before the next GW starts so hold off as much as you can but I'd be looking at players that play in that week for my transfers like VVD, Wally, Siggy, Mane, Bauer etc.

As a Kane and aguero owner and the with man city's awful run in of fixtures/Jesus coming back.... im thinking of living without aguero and ota for the rest of the season and upgrade a lot of dead wood in the team.

Would I be crazy to take hits to get rid of city players?

    Current team
    1FT and 0.5m ITB

    Pickford
    Otamendi, Mason, Maguire
    Salah, Sterling, Deulofeu, Walcott
    Kane, Aguero, Ayew

    Adrian, Mee, Lingard, Masuaku

Main league rival finally caught me with Aguero (C)

He owns Aguero Sterling Mhhitaryan Otamendi Aubameyang...

Would be delighted if Wigan got a draw in the Fa cup as he’s blew his Wildcard

Is Choupo > Shaqiri a waste of a transfer?

Today is a solid Sunday's worth of games for me. 3 on TV.

Huddersfield Vs Bournemouth - Begovic & Wilson
Newcastle Vs United - Pogba & Jones
    Southampton Vs Liverpool - Salah(C) & VVD.

If Carlsberg did Sundays... Cue 3 home 1-0 wins.
