Scout Notes – Spurs Hit Rochdale For Six

Seven goals, a Fernando Llorente hat-trick, VAR controversies and all of it played out in driving snow – Spurs’ progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals proves to be a busy affair.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to the side that squeaked past Crystal Palace on Sunday.

And the rather more comfortable 6-1 replay win over Rochdale finally confirmed what we had all been expecting – Spurs’ Gameweek 31 fixture with Newcastle will have to be rescheduled.

Pochettino’s selections also gave us a few pointers as to the likely make-up of the side who will entertain Huddersfield in on Saturday.

Only Eric Dier and Erik Lamela kept their places from the weekend, while the big guns – Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen – dropped to the bench and the team’s most popular defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 20.7%-owned Ben Davies, had the night off.

All four should slot back into the weekend team, although the small matter of a Champions League Round of 16 second leg with Juventus to follow on Wednesday means rotation could still be an issue.

One player almost certain to start at the weekend will be right-back Serge Aurier as he is suspended for the Champions League fixture.

Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes last night and his 5.2% ownership will be resigned to him putting in the same shift against Juventus, not Huddersfield.

Investment in Spurs defenders has been a solid source of points recently – they’ve kept three clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks and five in eight – but that efficiency will be tested by the possible absence of both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian pair are injured and missed last night’s tie, while Davinson Sanchez stayed on the bench. Alderweireld is expected to miss the next two matches.

Spurs thought they’d taken the lead against Rochdale when the ball found its way to Erik Lamela and he made no mistake from close range.

But after a less than brief VAR consultation, Llorente was adjudged to have fouled a defender in the build-up and the goal was chalked off.

It was definitely 1-0 soon afterwards when the lively Son Heung-min took Lamela’s pass, found some space and curled home his shot – a welcome sight for the 11.7% of FPL managers who have stuck by him through five straight blanks in the league.

The South Korean then had a chance to double his tally from the penalty spot when VAR ruled that Trippier had been fouled in the area.

But Son illegally stopped during his run-up, the spot-kick was disallowed and the midfielder booked.

He did go on to score again and set up Llorente’s hat-trick header after the break before being replaced by Alli on 67 minutes. Added to the fact that he played just 10 minutes as a sub at Selhurst Park, Son may well be set to retain his start against the Terriers.

He does, however, have increasing competition for the third attacking midfield spot.

Lamela started instead of Son on Sunday, and he produced both the assists for the South Korean’s goals last night, while Lucas Moura provided the same service for Llorente.

The Argentine went on to play the full 90 minutes, the Brazilian 82.

Over the last two, then, Son has played 77 minutes, Lamela 156 and Moura 106.

Spurs’ final goal on the night came when Alli combined with fellow substitute Kyle Walker-Peters for the young defender to score.

Mousa Dembele was also given a 30-minute run-out, while Kane and Eriksen remained wrapped up on the bench.

How things now stand

The victory ensures at least one double Gameweek to come for Spurs, with the prospect of a second should they see off Swansea City in the quarter-finals.

The FA Cup semi-finals take place over the weekend of April 21-22 during Gameweek 35, with Spurs currently due to travel to Brighton on the Friday night.

The full quarter-final draw is:

Saturday, March 17 – Swansea v Spurs and Man United v Brighton
Sunday, March 18 – Wigan v Southampton and Leicester City v Chelsea

If Pochettino’s side can see off Juventus, they will also have to factor in a Champions League quarter-final.

The first leg of that would come in early April, between trips to Chelsea and Stoke City, with the return following the Potters match and before a visit from Man City.

As a result, the Stoke clash, in Gameweek 33, would be the only obvious window for Pochettino to shuffle his pack.

Then again, even though Spurs’ two away goals mean they hold the advantage in their tie with Juventus, finishing the job against the Italian champions is in no way guaranteed.

What is certain is that their run-up to the blank Gameweek 31 is attractive (HUD bou), but their schedule afterwards is both tricky (che stk MCI) and likely to involve some serious fixture congestion.

Is Alonso worth the 0.2 over Azpilicueta? Only two points difference between them this season.

I think Alonso is a better pick.

i couldn't tell you if he's worth 0.2 more. You have to decide if that 0.2 is useful for the rest of your team.

I think budget & TV has became almost irrelevant by this time of the season. All that focus on building my TV by taking hits earlier in the year (I'm about 106.0) and it hasn't really mattered, as there are loads of cheap alternatives for pretty much every position.

I say it every year, but next year, I'm not going to look at TV - looking at points only

Actually replacing KDB may be a better idea. KDB usually scores big at home. And city have Chelsea at home next and out of next 5, only 1 is at home. That too mostly against ManU. So selling KDB looks better.

Looks like there are delays between Euston and Northampton so they may be a bit late.

Doesn't look like there is any horrendous weather in that area over the next few hours, so would be very surprised if the train didn't make it to Euston eventually though.

    My Actual team is:

    Pope - Foster
    Hegazi - Smalling - Ward - Dunk - Davies
    Salah - Deulofeu - Shaqiri - Milivojevic - Gross
    Aguero - Lukaku - Firmino.

    FH: 1
    Bank: 3.4

In current GW i changed sterling with Shaqiri.
    Now...my doubts are:

    1) Change Aguero with Kane, because Gabriel Jesus returned?
    2) Change lukaku with kane?
    3) for 31 GW how i can change deulofeu?
    4) change lukaku,dunk --> kane, robertson - 4

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Snow memories

Matches getting called off due to the weather have become increasingly rare.

But when it happens it can be devastating to some FPL managers, but a godsend to others.

Feel free to share any of your snowed off fixture memories here.

Suspect there may be a fair few Tevez and Cahill captainers. 🙂

I didn't play FPL back then, but the last major winter storm before this one was in 2010/11 season, think the UK ran out of grit at one point!

Anyway, 7 games got postponed in GW18 that year. The year before, 7 games were lost in GW21 too. So there is a bit of history for this sort of thing, it just hasn't happenned for a few years. Its quite interesting looking through the "blank/dgw history" tab on Ben Crellin's spreadsheet.

      https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-Xniaw-tEEiXoyqbGZLzMx6XEcv9TLolfa8GzndvTPw/edit#gid=1219748886

Games used to be called off all the time, and not just due to weather. In 2009/10 games were lost due to weather, EL qualifiers, CL qualifiers, the EL itself, the league cup semi final, the league cup final, and the FA cup semi finals. 24 games were blanked that season, across 8 gameweeks, and resulted in 12 double gameweeks!!

How i wish for those days to return!

In 2010-11, Blackpool had 3 home matches postponed because of their frozen pitch (they were new to the Premier League and had no undersoil heating.
        Charlie Adam scored 4+5 in DGW22, 7+10 in DGW24 and 8+8 in DGW27.

Remember an Everton game and I think man City/Sunderland around 3-4 years ago due to gales.
Had a really short team that week. City, Everton strong then and sadly remember because Adam Johnson was on fire scoring big pts.

Remember my dad phoning me after going up to St. James Park for the first from Kent to watch Charlton. Only for the game to be postponed 25 minutes before kick off on a Wednesday night between Christmas & New Year 2005. Annoyed was an understatement. 7 hour coach each way.

      He hasn't been back.

On 28th January 1961, Man City's 4th round FA Cup match against Luton Town was abandoned after 69 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch with City leading 6-2, Denis Law having scored all six of City's goals.

They had to start again from scratch 4 days later, with Luton this time winning 3-1 and Denis Law only scoring once.

His 6 goals were expunged from the record book, leaving Ian Rush as the 20th Century's leading FA Cup goalscorer with 44 and Denis Law second with 41 'official' FA Cup goals to his credit.

This was all of course long before FPL, but might be of some historical interest to anyone who was not already aware of it.

Anyone remember the week when nearly all matches except maybe 3 were cancelled?

This was before vice captains, so Baines became a lot of people’s ‘automatically replaced captain’ based on good past form.

He scored, kept a clean sheet, and got 3 bonus. An extra 15 points for all Baines owners, despite the fact that nobody would have dreamed of captaining him normally. I was one of them.

Not FPL, but POSH v Brighton FA Cup 5th round mid-Eighties.

Part of the pitch was still frozen as Greig Shepherd's long-range shot took a fortunate bounce straight over the diving keeper into the goal at the London Road end.

Game finished 2-2 - seem to recall feeling aggrieved a Seagull wasn't sent off for a foul... - before the (old) First Division side triumphed 1-0 in a postponed replay.

About the community team - is that really that bad idea? Surely it's just creating a new account and letting people vote on transfers while also captaining what the poll says?

    1. Alan The Llama
      • 14 Years

It would give the people who moan about RMTs and transfer questions something else to do. That's a good thing.

It's the suggesting a transfer and voting mechanism that is the hard part, although a poll (like the captain poll) could be set-up once the transfer options are gathered.

Any snow in Swansea? Getting Arnie might be a good option. A weekly weather report/outlook from one of the scouts would also be interesting in regards to rain, freezing temps etc. which no doubt affect performance

SWA-WHU is the fixture that's most at risk this weekend, but it will probably be OK because tomorrow threatens to be the worst day. Save transfers until Saturday morning to be safe.

So if the match is postponed, will likely be played in 31 right? Would suck for those who have sold City assets and also makes Arsenal slightly more enticing over the next 3

What are the odds of the match being postponed?

Here in Sao Paulo it is sunny.

I have Aguero / Sterling in my team and Fernandez (0) / TC (2) in my bench 🙁
