Scout Notes – Spurs Hit Rochdale For Six

Seven goals, a Fernando Llorente hat-trick, VAR controversies and all of it played out in driving snow – Spurs’ progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals proves to be a busy affair.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to the side that squeaked past Crystal Palace on Sunday.

And the rather more comfortable 6-1 replay win over Rochdale finally confirmed what we had all been expecting – Spurs’ Gameweek 31 fixture with Newcastle will have to be rescheduled.

Pochettino’s selections also gave us a few pointers as to the likely make-up of the side who will entertain Huddersfield in on Saturday.

Only Eric Dier and Erik Lamela kept their places from the weekend, while the big guns – Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen – dropped to the bench and the team’s most popular defender in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 20.7%-owned Ben Davies, had the night off.

All four should slot back into the weekend team, although the small matter of a Champions League Round of 16 second leg with Juventus to follow on Wednesday means rotation could still be an issue.

One player almost certain to start at the weekend will be right-back Serge Aurier as he is suspended for the Champions League fixture.

Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes last night and his 5.2% ownership will be resigned to him putting in the same shift against Juventus, not Huddersfield.

Investment in Spurs defenders has been a solid source of points recently – they’ve kept three clean sheets in the last four Gameweeks and five in eight – but that efficiency will be tested by the possible absence of both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian pair are injured and missed last night’s tie, while Davinson Sanchez stayed on the bench. Alderweireld is expected to miss the next two matches.

Spurs thought they’d taken the lead against Rochdale when the ball found its way to Erik Lamela and he made no mistake from close range.

But after a less than brief VAR consultation, Llorente was adjudged to have fouled a defender in the build-up and the goal was chalked off.

It was definitely 1-0 soon afterwards when the lively Son Heung-min took Lamela’s pass, found some space and curled home his shot – a welcome sight for the 11.7% of FPL managers who have stuck by him through five straight blanks in the league.

The South Korean then had a chance to double his tally from the penalty spot when VAR ruled that Trippier had been fouled in the area.

But Son illegally stopped during his run-up, the spot-kick was disallowed and the midfielder booked.

He did go on to score again and set up Llorente’s hat-trick header after the break before being replaced by Alli on 67 minutes. Added to the fact that he played just 10 minutes as a sub at Selhurst Park, Son may well be set to retain his start against the Terriers.

He does, however, have increasing competition for the third attacking midfield spot.

Lamela started instead of Son on Sunday, and he produced both the assists for the South Korean’s goals last night, while Lucas Moura provided the same service for Llorente.

The Argentine went on to play the full 90 minutes, the Brazilian 82.

Over the last two, then, Son has played 77 minutes, Lamela 156 and Moura 106.

Spurs’ final goal on the night came when Alli combined with fellow substitute Kyle Walker-Peters for the young defender to score.

Mousa Dembele was also given a 30-minute run-out, while Kane and Eriksen remained wrapped up on the bench.

How things now stand

The victory ensures at least one double Gameweek to come for Spurs, with the prospect of a second should they see off Swansea City in the quarter-finals.

The FA Cup semi-finals take place over the weekend of April 21-22 during Gameweek 35, with Spurs currently due to travel to Brighton on the Friday night.

The full quarter-final draw is:

Saturday, March 17 – Swansea v Spurs and Man United v Brighton
Sunday, March 18 – Wigan v Southampton and Leicester City v Chelsea

If Pochettino’s side can see off Juventus, they will also have to factor in a Champions League quarter-final.

The first leg of that would come in early April, between trips to Chelsea and Stoke City, with the return following the Potters match and before a visit from Man City.

As a result, the Stoke clash, in Gameweek 33, would be the only obvious window for Pochettino to shuffle his pack.

Then again, even though Spurs’ two away goals mean they hold the advantage in their tie with Juventus, finishing the job against the Italian champions is in no way guaranteed.

What is certain is that their run-up to the blank Gameweek 31 is attractive (HUD bou), but their schedule afterwards is both tricky (che stk MCI) and likely to involve some serious fixture congestion.

Not sure whether to buy a defender who plays in GW31 or not. The likes of Davies, Maguire and Mawson looks good – and it seems hard to find valuable defenders who plays in GW31 (except perhaps VvD).

What's the common opinion regarding defenders around here?

I'm planning to go one defender short. 10 including 3 Pool should be more than enough in that GW.

leaning towards Butland, Bauer and Schindler, plus Robertson whom i already have. My rival has Daniels but not sure if i want to go down that route. Think Stoke and Hudders have decent chances of cs due to their opponents being trash away.

  16. How Spurs beat their Wembley blues

Tottenham may have won 6-1 against ‘only Rochdale’ last night, but I think it’s another indicator that their Wembley woes are now firmly in the past. They struggled there at the start of the season, scoring more than once in only 1 of their first 7 in the league, in which they picked up just 12 points, with 3 draws and a defeat.

Their 1-1 draw at home to West Brom in late November was the final straw. Spurs played a back three in 14 of their first 20 games in all competitions, including that disappointment against the Baggies. Since then, Spurs have used a back four in 21 of the last 22, with the sole exception being an FA Cup tie away at Newport.

In that period, Spurs have won 10 of their 11 games in all competitions at Wembley, by a combined score-line of 34-5. The outlier is the GW22 1-1 draw with West Ham, where they were denied victory by Pedro Obiang’s once-in-a-lifetime strike from distance. They haven’t just been flat-track bullies, either, given their back-to-back wins over Arsenal and Man United. I think that whilst they have become more accustomed to their Wembley surroundings, the switch to a back four has also been a big part of their recent success, particularly against weaker opposition.

Spurs have used a back three at Wembley 7 times this season, with some great early results against big teams. They destroyed Liverpool 4-1 in GW9 and had 3-1 wins over both Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in the Champions League with that system. Against the smaller teams, however, it was a different story, as they laboured to a 0-0 draw with Swansea, scraped a 1-0 win over Palace, and bowed out of the League Cup with a 3-2 defeat to West Ham, before that draw with West Brom. The stats for those three home league games against non-top six opposition are revealing:

3 Games, 1 Win, 2 Draws, 5 Points (1.3 per game), 2 Goals (0.7 per game), 3.8 xG (1.3 per game) 4 Big Chances (1.3 per game), 63 Shots (21 per game), 25 Shots in Box (8 per game), 107 Crosses (36 per game), 14% successful.

By comparison, here are the same stats for their home matches against non-top six opposition when playing a back four this season:

7 Games, 5 Wins, 2 Draws, 17 Points (2.4 per game), 19 Goals (2.7 per game), 18.1 xG (2.6 per game), 25 Big Chances (3.6 per game), 158 Shots (23 per game), 100 Shots in Box (14 per game), 164 Crosses (23 per game), 20% successful.

The main difference with the back four in terms of personnel is that another attacking player, typically Son Heung-Min, is substituted in for a centre back in the back three, with Toby Alderweireld out injured for most of the last few months. This is a small sample size, but with the back three, Spurs naturally invite teams onto them more, which can lead to opportunities on the break. This worked terrifically against Liverpool, Dortmund and Madrid. Against weaker teams, however, they found it difficult to break teams down, as these sides were happy to sit back and soak up the Spurs pressure.

As well as the dramatic improvement to their goalscoring, the xG and Big Chances numbers show the greater quality of chances they have created with a back four, without taking many more Shots. The percentage of Spurs’ Shots that were in the box against weaker teams has risen from around 40% with a back three, to over 60% with a back four, as Spurs have been less reliant on taking pot-shots from long-range.

Crosses are another key stat to take note of. In the back three, a lot of creative responsibility rests on the wing backs, but they struggled to create chances inside a packed penalty area in these matches. With a back four, and the addition of Son’s direct attacking threat in behind, they crossed less often, but were more successful in picking out their team-mates. Overall, Spurs have come a long way from their Wembley woes at the beginning of the season, and if it’s still a factor that’s influencing your decisions, I think you can safely put it to bed now.

Brought in Kane and Eriksen before GW28. Nice run of fixtures, favourable double and those WC'ing in GW32/33 are not likely to have Spurs assets before then.

A Spurs CB next on the shopping list due to rotation at the WB positions.

Another point I possibly should have made is that with Toby coming back from injury, there's a chance we could see a return to the back three.

Spurs had some big wins last season playing that system against weaker opposition, but the signs from the little we've seen at Wembley were far from promising.

Great post. Even with the stats and analysis it’s quite simple in my opinion, 3 at the back for the tougher games and 4 at the back for the easier games. That extra attacker makes a huge difference against teams that come to Wembley and put 10 men behind the ball, especially with the pace of Son and now Lucas Moura.

Fascinating stuff, thanks Ludo. Appreciate the time taken to delve into the stats and provide an explanation for their upturn in home form.

You would think that Pochettino has noticed these stats too, but do you think there is any chance of Spurs returning to the back 3 v non top 6 opposition at home once Alderweireld and Vertonghen are back fit? I suppose the danger to us as fantasy managers is that we don't know how a team will line up until after each gameweek deadline, so its difficult to react accordingly. Whereas with injuries and suspensions etc these are "knowns" before the deadline.

I think it's telling that Pochettino continued with the back three for the first few games after Alderweireld got injured - the 1-0 win over Palace, a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal and the 1-1 draw with West Brom, before giving up on it. They also struggled with a Toby-free back three in the 1-1 draw at Newport.

A huge part of his importance in that system is his ability to consistently and accurately play long passes, early on in moves.

Without that ability to surprise a defence from deep positions, Spurs are inevitably slower in their build up play, allowing more of the opposition to get behind the ball.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen have both played as full backs for Belgium, and can also support attacking moves down the flanks as the outside centre back in a three man defence, or suddenly burst forward with the ball, whilst Sánchez uses his pace to cover from a deeper role.

Spurs experimented with both Dier and Sánchez as the right-sided centre back, swapping their roles after the Palace game. Neither impressed Pochettino enough for him to persist with the system.

I do still think he likes the shape, and it's a real possibility it makes another appearance when Alderweireld is fully fit. The question of predicting what he'll do is a tricky one - I think you have to treat it in the same way you would a rotation-risk player.

Interesting observations, thanks. I think the struggle v Newport could also be partly due to Eriksen's absence, as it was a week earlier when he missed the Southampton match.

Yes I get that impression too, having that tactical flexability is quite a weapon. I'm really thinking of this from a GW32 wildcard point of view, I think Kane is a shoo-in, but who (if anyone) from Spurs joins him in my team is open to debate. They seem fairly solid defensively in either system so possibly the most risk free approach is to pick one of the centre backs, probably Vertonghen. Depends how far they go in the Champions League too, of course.

      Hi Ludo,

There's one further point I would mention and that is the loss of our speedy wing/full-backs early in the season - Walker sold to Man City, Rose injured. In a system with a flat back three we need the speedy full-backs to get to the byline and put the crosses in. It's useless crossing from deep, it's too easy to defend, but this tends to happen with Davies and Trippier as wing backs in a flat back three. Son, when playing in a system with a flat back four, often drives for the byline as well as cutting inside. Essentially he partly fulfills the role of a speedy wing-back in that system.

I think it's important to mention this because the wing-backs are so crucial to the flat back three system, especially against teams who come to defend. A flat back three with Rose and Aurier is a different proposition against a team set-up to defend. There's no data to support that yet but I wouldn't be surprised to see this system played once or twice before the end of the season, with success.

Yeah, that's a nice observation. It's that combination of both width and penetration that all great attacking teams possess.

I think a big part of their greater success with crosses with the back four has to do with the position they're coming from - near the byline, on the overlap, rather than just pumping it into the box from deep.

That can work when a defence isn't ready for it, of course, like Kane's goal against Arsenal, but when they have time to pack the box, you might as well just give the ball away.
