The Silvas strike gold for Man City against an ultra-defensive Chelsea, while Brighton outgun a shell-shocked Arsenal.

City’s 1-0 defeat of the Blues had more than a whiff of their more emphatic win over Arsenal on Thursday night.

Raheem Sterling again missed out – he’s been sold by 746,000+ over the last two Gameweeks – while the differentials delivered in his stead.

Bernardo Silva (1.1%) got today’s winner from the 7.6%-owned David Silva’s assist.

That’s two goals and an assist in four Gameweeks from Bernardo, while Spanish Silva produced his first assist since Gameweek 12, but now has nine for the season, which equals last campaign’s total.

His goal against the Gunners also elevates his stock, particularly as two of Gameweek 19’s popular captaincy picks, Sergio Aguero (6.8%) and Kevin De Bruyne (2.5%), both blanked.

The Argentine, who was sold by more than 80,000 managers going into the Gameweek, had just one shot and has now failed to score in three of the last four fixtures.

With United and Spurs to come in Gameweeks 33 and 34, Aguero owners Wildcarding the week before might now think again over holding on to the striker. Gameweek 34 should also come packaged with a home tie with Brighton but, with the title potentially wrapped up by then, Guardiola will likely be far more liberal with his rotation.

Despite three blanks in four, De Bruyne’s ownership continues to creep upwards and is closing in on his Gameweek 19 high of 1,480,571 managers.

The same cannot be said for Nicolas Otamendi’s base, with 151,000+ managers selling him on over the last two Gameweeks – just as he’s produced back-to-back clean sheets.

He was partnered at centre-half by Aymeric Laporte today as Vincent Kompany dropped out.

Midweek rotation is highly likely when City complete their Champions League tie with Basel – an encounter they lead 4-0 – so Otamendi should be in line for a well-earned rest before resuming action in the Gameweek 30 trip to Stoke City.

Things get slightly more complicated after their Gameweek 31 blank, however.

A visit to Everton precedes the Champions League quarter-finals, with key domestic matches against Man United and Spurs following each leg of the European tie.

That marks out the Goodison Park encounter in Gameweek 32 as a likely rotation hot spot.

Blue Sunday for Hazard and co

Chelsea came to the Emirates intent on stifling City and hitting them on the break.

They performed the first task admirably, the second less so as they finished today’s match with precisely no shots on target.

Eden Hazard was used as a false nine and suffered.

He had no shots or key passes and was starved of service all match as his more advanced role, flanked by Willian and Pedro, again had a huge impact on his offensive threat.

The inclusion of either Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud, who both came on as substitutes at the Etihad, is required to bring the best out in the Belgian.

And his 7.3% ownership could be excused for hoping Chelsea fail to find a way past Barcelona in the Champions League to remove the threat of rotation from the equation as well.

The Blues again suffered for the absence of N’Golo Kante, who missed today’s match through illness.

They’ve managed just one clean sheet in the four matches he has missed, and it’s now one shut-out in five for Antonio Conte’s men – they had six in seven prior to this latest run.

That lack of resilience could dent Marcos Alonso’s chances of being retained over the run-in, although their schedule from Gameweek 33 – with the potential for two double Gameweeks – encourages investment.

Chelsea will have to score in Barcelona to have any chance of progressing in Europe.

Our assessment of their run-in will depend on the outcome of that match, with defeat in Spain being more beneficial from a Fantasy perspective.

Based on today’s toothless performance, that is the more likely scenario.

Brighton rock the Gunners

Form over fixtures is usually cited in relation to a player. With Arsenal, it currently refers to the entire team.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, while their schedule could really not be much better – they have to face only Man United of the top sides before the season’s end – their form is the stuff of nightmares.

They’ve now lost four straight matches in all competitions, with today’s 2-1 defeat at Brighton of the go-down-with-a-whimper variety.

The Seagulls overwhelmed their more illustrious opponents in the first half, taking a two-goal lead courtesy of strikes from Lewis Dunk and Glenn Murray, with Shane Duffy and Pascal Gross providing the assists.

Arsenal did manage a reply before the interval when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang dispatched Granit Xhaka’s pass.

But they couldn’t find a way past the home defence after the break and were lucky to finish the match with 11 men when Sead Kolasinac escaped a second yellow card for an industrial challenge on Ezequiel Schelotto, which led to the home defender having to be substituted.

Brighton’s form – they’re now unbeaten in five – couldn’t be more timely as their Fantasy assets will soon drop off our radars.

Chris Hughton’s men have a short-term schedule (eve LEI HUD cry) that will surely decide their Premier League future because, after that, things turn ugly.

Unless both they and Spurs lose their FA Cup quarter-finals, their Gameweek 35 clash will have to be rescheduled, leaving Brighton to face Mauricio Pochettino’s side, both Manchester teams and Liverpool across their last four fixtures.

That, however, is for later. For now, the Seagulls are soaring.

The 4.0%-owned Murray made it five goals in as many Gameweeks and is the second best value forward in FPL, behind Swansea City’s Jordan Ayew.

Despite such fine form, his ownership is likely to stay low as managers concentrate on transfers/Free Hit chips for Gameweek 31 – Brighton are not involved – and then Wildcards from Gameweek 32 onwards.

Those without Wildcards will likely hold on to Gross (17.5%) in the short term.

The German has played a part in 52% of Brighton’s goals at the Amex when on the pitch, has one goal and three assists from the last four Gameweeks and is the top value midfielder in the game.

At the back, no clean sheets in eight matches continues to dampen enthusiasm in their backline, but at least Dunk and Duffy finally delivered on their attacking threat – the pair are in the top four for shots in the box by defenders.

For Dunk’s 3.1% ownership, his strike was a welcome repayment for his four own goals this campaign, while Duffy’s (3.3%) assist was his second of the season.

Europe or bust for Arsenal

Thursday’s Europa League Round of 16 tie away at AC Milan has assumed almost epic proportions thanks to Arsenal’s current slump.

It also went a long way to explaining why Aaron Ramsey, drafted in by 34,867 for Gameweek 29, was rested by Arsene Wenger, who confirmed as much post-match.

“I didn’t want to gamble today for a physical setback, so I left him completely out of the squad. Yes [it’s a sign of the Europa League’s importance], because we have to be realistic. We need two teams to collapse [in the Premier League]. I can’t see that at the moment, because two teams to drop so many points is very difficult to imagine.”

Hector Bellerin was another benched by the coach presumably with Milan in mind, but Arsenal’s form and confidence remain so low that their excellent domestic schedule, coupled with the threat of further rotation should they progress in Europe, inspires little interest in their assets.

The exception could be Aubameyang, who now has two goals from his brief, four-match, Premier League career and would be one better off had he not missed a penalty against Man City.

The 4.4%-owned striker has differential potential as he is ineligible for the Europa League.

His team-mates, however, will need to improve markedly for us to consider any Arsenal player as anything more than a risky punt, even with six of the teams in the lower half of the table to play over the last nine matches.

Sorry bottomed on the last page and hoping for some thoughts on the below.

Team is looking horrible for this week with potentially 8 players across 2 games! thinking of the below. Won't be doing anything until after tonight:

    a) DDG & Lingard > Lossl & Sane - 4
    b) Ogbonna > Zanka

    Current team is:

    DDG / Speroni

    Ogbonna / VVD / Kenny / Dunk / Daniels

    Salah / Mane / Lingard / Walcott / RLC

    Kane / Aguero / Wilson

    1FT , 2.7 ITB

    Thanks,

          Hi!

          Good thanks, yourself?

Haha yeah I saw on twitter you'd had a good one, congrats! Deeney was a good call 🙂 Was slightly annoyed at myself regarding Brighton Centre backs, I'd done a bit of research and actually found that Brighton were more likely to keep a clean sheet than WBA, but I must have forgotten and/or been swayed by Dawson's goal last week so played him ahead of Duffy 🙁 And all my starting 11 turned up so no bench points for me this week 😉

Haha oh my - I played it wonderfully well and strategically played Ogbonna and Kenny ahead of Dunk to lull my ML rivals into a false sense of security.. 🙂

My bench is a total shambles still, with my defence (outside of VVD, I have Ogbonna Kenny Dunk Chilwell lol) the key issue so I think a "hygiene move" of maybe Schindler in for one of those no-hopers might be my next move! Take me up to 7 BGWers too, with 2 more to come in on a -4 on 31.

What about you? Plan for blanks?

Haha! A "false flag" operation working to full effect 😉

You're planning to WC in 32 aren't you? In which case I agree with you a defensive transfer would be wise. I've owned Schindler for a while now (to not much use) BUT fixtures don't come much better than his next 2, and he is a BPS monster so a clean sheet would probably be worth 8 or 9 points. I'd probably bring him in for Dunk as he is away (where Brighton struggle) and Everton are a much better side at home.

I'm doing the same as you really. Currently own Robertson, Firmino, Salah, Schindler, Dawson, Wilson, Walcott, and possibly with a miracle recovery RLC who play in 31. Will supplement them with Butland and Shaquiri in 31 itself is the current plan before wildcarding.

That could be for free if I save a transfer this week. But I'm also looking at 1 week punts for GW30....Son was fantastic for me this week but his home and away form is like night and day!

Oh absolutely. They may be streets, towns, cities, ahead due to their ownership of Kun v me sticking doggedly with Firmino (and also having Sanchez for an ill fated spell - damn it) but little do they know that the comeback begins now!

Yeah exactly - I think that's probably what I'll do and hope Chilwell plays v WBA as he looked pretty attacking when on for Leicester. Hopefully he's played himself back into contention after an awful game the week before last 🙂

I was thinking a 1 week punt on Bilva, whom I can afford for a straight swap for CM, but nah surely not. I have Eriksen in the midfield so all good - have VVD Firmino Salah Deeney Kenny(lol) Shaq EMCM at the moment for the blank so Schindler added to the list (I can't not say that whenever I mention his name) seems prudent. Guess I'll do maybe a defensive swap more (for a Dawson type who may get me a goal) on 31, or move out Mahrez/Eriksen for a week for Siggy as I'll wildcard anyway!

Momentum exists in FPL as it does in sport, you could be picking some up now 🙂 Firmino has been great value to be fair though, he may well survive my Wildcard. Sanchez I couldn't comment on though 😛

Yeah I think transferring a player out before WBA would be unwise. Especially as they're sticking with Pardew so no new manager bounce to worry about there either.

Interesting, I'm looking at David Silva in for Son potentially, will see what happens in the CL this week first though. I'd be a bit concerned Sterling comes back in place of Bernardo Silva. You seem fairly well set, the only other potential big hitter in the gameweek is Zaha potentially, if he recovers from injury. I think you've got most other bases covered. What are your thoughts on bothering with a keeper for 31? I know keepers have a "low ceiling" but Butland seems to be coming back into form and performing on BPS, a clean sheet at home to travel sick Everton could be a 9 pointer in waiting.

      Morning mate.
Very jammy - first "risky" hit payoff all season in Deeney in, Wilson out. Hugely lucky King stepped up for the pen.
Points also from Mahrez and the legend that is Lewis Dunk (3rd sub, off the bench for Kenny/Ogbonna no shows) have meant a decent green (67-4 with ddg to go)
Probably not enough to spark a late resurgence but happy to have stopped the rot after 3 consecutive greens!
Apart from Bainesy it go OK for you?

7-9 is fine to be honest. Awful gameweek, you may well also have most of the key men covered already (3x Liv, maybe Shaq, striker in wilson/Deeney, crappy defenders) covered by now too so yeah I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Will be mostly only those who have used (wasted?) their FH on those fixtures who can field an xi. And the difference will be them having a Mariappa or something for 1-2 points v a 0 for me. Not too worried about that!

I can only say well done. But getting Mariappa in with the intent of playing him away at Liverpool and reaping the benefits from that 'brilliant' decision is probably more luck than many players will get during a season.

But I will say, getting him in before a run of two home games is not that bad an idea - so I won't begrudge you those points. But free hitting him in for Liverpool away is, well, a little strange.

TBH that is not even a strong argument at all.
There's honestly lots of reason why people would want to use FH for 31. Esp if they do not want to destroy their team just for that gameweek. I myself only have 3 players for 31 and not planning to take aimless hits to get 7-8 while losing out on players with form and fixtures currently.

And your example of Mariappa is just bad. Anyone in their right mind would not even consider Mariappa in their Free Hit when they are up against free scoring Liverpool.

For you it's a pretty obvious Free Hit. But I think Individual is probably correct if you have 8 or more players. You'll be 10 points or so down on those who played the free hit well (or more realistically, got lucky) but only 3 or 4 points down on many. But I think with less than 8 players you'll need to be a touch fortunate to make it work.

That's cool mate no worries 🙂 obviously everyone frames the issue by the way they come at it, for me I have 6BGWers now so it's a bit of an easy one for me to get to 8-9. If you're lower and want to FH, it does make sense; all I'd say is the fixtures are poor apart from Liverpool so think carefully about if you want to spend it then or save it to maximise it's potential (e.g. 35)!
              Cheers!

Of course you don't wanna wreck your team in the run up but using the FH in 35 has more potential in my opinion considering there's a double gameweek surrounding it. A WC is on the other side of GW31 for most/many managers.

I'm gonna have 6 players, maybe 7. 8 if I decide to get a defender but I'm sceptical about all of them (currently have no keeper or defender for 31).

Swings/roundabouts. A WC is on the other side of GW35 for those FHing in 31, by the sounds of things.

WC'ing in 36 in my opinion isn't getting full use of the WC. It's good for 36 and 37 but 38 is a shot in the dark regarding team lineups. Also tryna plan transfers now for gw34 is dangerous as injuries can lay waste to plans.

I dunno. I'm not doing it personally as I'm a WC32, FH35 kind of guy - but my WC32 for DGW34 is also prey to unforeseen injuries too. I'd say WC36 for BB in 37 kind of protects you more from the GW38 lottery as you should have, in theory, three good subs to fall back on in case of random rotation.

Your gw32 wc team will be susceptible to injuries for 2 weeks until you bench boost. Tryna get dgw 34 players in now and for the past 2/3 is leaving you much more exposed to these risks.

34 also has more doubles on offer and better ones.

Any top 6 team with a double in 37 really only offers expensive players and the teams they face obviously play a top 6 team in one of their double, thus limited their potential.

Meanwhile Swansea have 2 juicy fixtures in 34,players are cheap and can be brought along on the bench until then.

And FH in 31 isnt gonna gain alot of people ground as most will have 7/8 of those players anyway. You'll be gaining an extra 3/4 differentials (probably defenders) who are more likely to score 2 points than haul

I spent some time experimenting the FH31 strategy I just couldn't find 11 players that would make it worthwhile.

FH in 35 will have so much more options to put a good 11 together with a chance of scoring decent pts. Much more decent than the pool of players on offer for 31 anyway.

As many have said, this depends. Sure - if you have the optimum front 7 without free hitting then the free hit is not worth much - so don't do it. But if you don't then its worth considering. People going with 5 or 6 because it'll be quote "a crap week" are masters of their own downfall. It will be a crap week - for them.

Not sure about masters of the downfall. People will Wilson and Walcott haven't been reaping any rewards in the run up. The extra points Ayew has got me will allow to not care about the hit to get am in form striker in (which Wilson is currently not one of). Plenty have Kenny, Baines, Niasse. Where has that planning got them? Richarlison, Deulofeu, Hegazi. I can't see these players constructing any downfalls

Been reviewing my goalkeeper situation this season and genuinely not sure how there are millions of players ranked below me.

I've managed to pick up 3 clean sheets from my goalkeepers ALL SEASON. The last one was in GW9. Yes, I've now gone 20 gameweeks without a goalkeeping clean sheet. 135 days in real terms. Those 20 gameweeks have seen me use 4(!) goalkeepers and get 50 points. I mean, I've been picking ropey goalkeepers but to dodge clean sheets this effectively is a bit mad.

I literally couldn't have done worse if I'd picked any team in the league and just stuck with their goalkeepers all season.

Basically, if I ever offer any advice on who to play in goal do NOT go with it!

I was curious about my gk scores too, so I realised I've had Ryan since gw10. He had a few clean sheets, I was often thinking of ditching for DeGea but there were always more important things to change.
He'll probably become Lossl for these 2 weeks and then it's wildcard time.

DeGea has really only outscored Pope buy 7 points since he came into the team in GW4 and if you played Elliot when Pope played City earlier in the season you'd have the same points.

Man that is awful luck. Are the days of keeper rotations over? Better to just fire and forget a premium, or go for a budget 4.5/4.0 combo from the same team?

I'm not prepared to dismiss the concept of goalkeeper rotation purely because I suck at it this season. Fire and forget is probably the stable/low frustration method but I can't resist the lure of managing to eke out a few extra points through 'clever' management of a rotating pair. In other words I'll fall into all the same traps again next season and berate myself all over again 🙂

      Haha oh god.
Next year, I think it's easy: DDG in from day one, and forget about it.
Took me 15-16 gameweeks but once I shoved him in there I never looked back

Yeah probably start all 3. The thing is theres a lare majority with people who have triple Liverpool anyway, it wont make a massive deal. Also a lot with ManUtd defenders, a Bobby goal would be nice

See no need in taking out Wally. Focus on Ogbonna first but that's fully dependent on your 1st choice gk.

    Play 2:
    a) Robertson - mun
    b) Dunk - eve
    c) Hegazi - LEI
    d) Ake - TOT

Mahrez & Son will play in my team, so I am hoping Ake+Hegazi won't get CS

This might be a bit controversial but is it now clear that not playing the free hit chip in 31 was the wrong decision?

While the benefit of what you actually get in the gameweek may be limited (although who is to say for sure...) I see countless posts of people's teams weighed down by poorly performing assets from teams like Stoke, Bournemouth, Everton etc. The points gained by ignoring these players could have been massive. It was the same last season as we held on to the likes of Rondon for weeks just for the sake of 1 gw.

Sadly I blew my FH early in the season, but for those of you with it still in hand how are you feeling about the choice you've made?

Another factor is we could have wildcarded earlier to clear out dross. Many waiting for 32 now...

The only reason why I'm playing the FH in 31 is only cause I dont want to be blinded by just that gameweek and sacrifice my players during the buildup. Though, playing it in GW35 is also a good shout. But with proper planning during the WC you can kind of get away with that.

It's more of the benefit knowing people are dismantling their teams for hits to get out of form assets who are playing 31 that will get you the points than the actual gameweek itself, which as mentioned by you the points might be limited

Exactly. Any idea roughly how many points you've gained so far by ignoring rubbish 31 assets?

I'm looking to wildcard 32 and with no FH I just have to take 35 into account. It feels a much smaller sacrifice than bringing in 31 players and ignoring other better options.

I'm asking not as a 'told you so' but with learning for next year in mind...

I am 100% won't use FH simply because there is only 1 big team playing in week 31. Everyone has Salah and everyone will captain him. Even FH user will captain Salah too, no differential for sure.

I have 7 players currently and planning to get 9. I think 9 is enough.

Anyway, how is the best team for FH in week 31? I am thinking on
      Lossl
      Schlinder Robertson Ake Daniels
      Salah (C) Shaqiri Walcott
      Firmino Mounie Benteke

maybe that won't get more than 70

Hotdogs for Tea posted a 343 yesterday that looked good for a FH31. What I'm saying is that it's the points you gain in the run up to FH that are more valuable here.

Also as a word of caution, I played my free hit when I thought there were great fixtures and I had injuries elsewhere. I captained Sanchez at home to Swansea as a differential. He scored 2 points. Mondays had a plum tie (and had form then) and scored 5. KDB played WBA and scored 2 etc. Good teams/fixtures don't guarantee points.

Last season we had a 'rubbish' bgw but it actually turned out pretty high scoring.

Just trying to offer a different perspective, and am surprised more people haven't expressed refresh/changed their minds...

I'd say yes it's now clear that, unless you have 1-2 BGW players at the moment and need to pull it to "tread water" in that Gameweek, that you probably might benefit from holding it til 35.
Reasoning is as you say - poor set of fixtures within which the key players (3x Liv, Shaq, maybe a couple more) are highly owned, meaning that any differentials you bring in are likely to be of the "punty, you'd never do it otherwise" type.

I actually consciously decided 2 weeks ago to go for quality over quantity, and brought in Mahrez and Eriksen into my midfield rather than bringing in Walcott/Shaq/whatever, which has worked out decently well over the last couple of weeks.

I also removed Wilson for Deeney this Gameweek - I felt Wilson was en route to becoming a Rondon (owned him for 7 blanks last season, kept him in because he had a game) and decided to act to stop that from happening!

I agree with your assessment of how things stand now (IE we have come this far and need to stick to plan) but if you could wind the clock back 6 or 7 GWs and pursue a gw31 FH whike bringing in the likes of Mahrez etc from earlier on, would you do so?

No because Mahrez was suffering from transferitis at that point and I'd have had to sell him anyway 🙂 and Liverpool have been doing well regardless - unfortunately it's hard to answer hypotheticals because it's hard to divorce yourself from the context in which you made decisions 🙂
I think 35 is looking ideal for the FH now as flexibility is going to be hugely limited after going for it in the DGW in 34, as well

Is Stoke's Geoff Cameron a good shout? Or is he a rotation risk? Seems good value for £4.3 if he plays in the blank.
