Dugout Discussion – Crystal Palace vs Man United

We draw a line under Gameweek 29 this evening as Crystal Palace and Manchester United go head-to-head at Selhurst Park.

The 8pm encounter features five of the top 20 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) captains for this round of fixtures – Romelu Lukaku, David De Gea, Paul Pogba, Christian Benteke and Alexis Sanchez.

Of that quintet, Lukaku is the only one with more than 1% backing – he’s the third most popular armband pick for Gameweek 29, with 10.4% handing him the captaincy.

The Belgian’s 12-point return at home to Chelsea – a first double-digit haul since Gameweek 5 – continued the form that has now harvested four goals and an assist in his last five appearances across all competitions.

Elsewhere for the visitors, Jesse Lingard returns to the teamsheet after emerging from the bench to score the winner against Chelsea last weekend – over 43,000 drafted him in for this one.

Yet the Eagles have been fairly resilient at home in recent matches – they’ve conceded just twice in four at Selhurst Park, despite entertaining Man City and Spurs across that stretch.

Roy Hodgson’s side have only netted two goals in those encounters, which bodes well for De Gea’s 44% FPL owners, as the top scoring keeper in FPL goes in search of a sixteenth clean sheet of the campaign.

Meanwhile, a shutout for the visitors would see Antonio Valencia climb above the popular Ben Davies into fourth spot among FPL defenders.

I currently have 4 GW31 players and all my chips intact inc WC. I have 2FT as well so could get more GW31 players, but am I best off using my free hit instead? Allows me to WC later on for the doubles and set myself up to use BB/TC in them

There’s a bgw in 35 so prob best using your FH then when more decent teams play

So you think WC in 32 is better after changing my team in preparation for 31?

Dropped 1000 places with 53 points this week, didn't think that was too bad this gw? Guess i didn't qualify for the cup either?

That's unlucky, I moved up 4,000 with 54. Are you like me and stuck in that 75k-150k zone where you just move up and down a couple of thousand each week?

Lovely work, hopefully you will get a bit of a bit of a boost using your chips. I'd be happy with being stuck between 4-6k though. What's your aim?

I thought that wirh how well my season was going I'd be able to get in the top 1k but will see like you said chips might do it! Good luck to you

whats the lowest position when its actually realistic to make top 10k? saying that you have all chips left..thinking 50k?

There's about 50 points between 50k and 10k atm, so you'd have to consistently beat the top 50k (or is it top 10k?) average by 5-6 points each week.

May be a bit tough, could be doable if you're lucky?

It's different every year. This year it seems harder to move up due to everyone having roughly the same team. I'm trying to beat last my last year's 20k finish from 120k but it just feels like each week I go up, then next week I go down.

Definitely doable. I would say even top somebody within top 150k could do it if a good run is put together and chips are used well.

    Kenny to Keane?

I can't afford Coleman and already have VVD.

Who will replace Williams in the heart of defence? Is a clean sheet even less likely now?

I reckon Jags or if adventurous could Holgate get a run @ CB?

i'm thinking similar... will Everton keep clean sheets. Might go Huddersfield def

Why risk it when Keane will definitely play?

I'm going to wait a week to get a Huddersfield player in - but I'm thinking maybe midfield as a replacement for one of Sterling or B Silva rather than defence. But Mooy is still out and Pritchard has a knock.

Who would you bring in for this week considering fixtures for GW30 and 32? (Going against the consensus and using my FH in GW31)

    A) Kenny > Lascelles (SOT, HUD)
    B) Kenny > Schindler (SWA, new)
    C) Kenny > Maguire (wba, bha)
    D) Kenny > Cresswell (BUR, SOT)
    D) Quaner > J.Ayew (hud, MUN) - Only considering this because rival has J.Ayew

Not really looking beyond GW32 too much for now as I'll likely WC in 33 once there is more clarity on the doubles.

Is Mounie worth a shout over Huddersfield's next 5 games? Looking to downgrade Sterling for him, or is that a bad move?
    Team is
    Pope
    Alonso Robertson Fernandez Simpson
    Hazard Salah Mahrez Sterling
    Kane Frimino
    Hennessy Niasse TCarrol Mariappa
    $0.2m in the bank

Is WBA defender worth an effectively -2 hit in GW31 given they should have decent chance of clean sheet in GW32 against Burnley at home?

    1. Olivier Bernards watch
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

interesting question that you can actually solve quite cleanly with a little decision theory. Let P be the probability of WBA keeping a cleanie. Then the expected utility (how well you expect to do) of taking a hit to get a WBA defender is (ignoring possible cards, bonus points, attacking returns, effects on your budget etc)

      EU = (P x 2) + ((1 - P) x -2) = 2P -2 + 2P = 4P - 2

which is greater than 0 if and only if P >= 1/2.

Which means that it is worth it as long as you think they have at least a 50/50 chance of taking a clean sheet, and you are willing ignore all the other factors i listed above. Personally, I think that looks like quite a big stretch. So don't do it.
