Scout Notes – Spurs out, City through

A pair of 2-1 home defeats have contrasting repercussions for the two English teams as Spurs bow out and Man City march on in the Champions League.

A change of personnel to accommodate a tactical switch undid all Spurs’ good work in just three minutes as Juventus found a way to win at Wembley.

The home side dominated the first half and deservedly went in at the break 1-0 up when Son Heung-min’s mis-hit shot, from a Kieran Trippier cross, found the net.

But Spurs failed to convert that dominance into further goals and when the Italian changes came, they turned the tie on its head and put the visitors through 3-2 on aggregate.

The loss may lead to a backlash when Mauricio Pochettino’s men travel to Bournemouth on Sunday, though, equally, the Cherries might fancy their chances against a side still struggling to cope with an emotionally draining encounter.

Pochettino made just the one change from the team that beat Huddersfield 2-0 last weekend, with Trippier in for the suspended Serge Aurier.

The roles could well be reversed at the Vitality Stadium, where it would also be no surprise if Son – owned by 11.1% – is rested to the bench.

The South Korean was the standout performer last night and made it five goals in his last three matches in all competitions with the opener against the Italian champions.

That form has persuaded 76,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to make him the second most purchased player of Gameweek 30.

But he’s now started three fixtures in a week – the only Spurs player in action against Juventus to have such a workload – and could well lose his place to Erik Lamela, who was a second-half substitute last night, as a result.

Ben Davies (23.7%) is another threatened by rotation.

The left-back has seen his ownership rise by close to half a million in the last two Gameweeks and is currently the fourth most popular player heading into this weekend as well.

He, too, has been busy, however, with nine straight starts in the league prior to the Juventus match suggesting that Danny Rose could be in line for minutes at Bournemouth.

A blank Gameweek 31 follows Sunday’s match and Pochettino might well start fielding close to his first-choice team in the FA Cup for a serious shot at earning his first silverware as Spurs boss.

They face Swansea City in the quarter-finals, following that up with a huge Gameweek 32 trip to Chelsea that would go a long way to securing a place in next season’s Champions League should they win at Stamford Bridge.

The FA Cup semi-finals take place during Gameweek 35, when Spurs are due to travel to Brighton.

More pertinently, if the preceding Gameweek turns out to be a double-header, it would involve a visit from Man City and, very likely, Newcastle as well.

Should that be the case, Pochettino may be tempted to freshen up his options for the Magpies encounter, though last night’s exit should now lessen the chances of rotation over the run-in.

Nonetheless, those looking to Wildcard in Gameweek 32 could limit their short-term interest to Kane – all the more so given that Spurs’ next three league matches are on the road – with Son’s outstanding home form surely set to be a factor from Gameweek 34 onwards, given that four of their final six league fixtures will take place at Wembley.

Guardiola gives it a rest

Man City lost at home to Basel, but still eased into the Champions League quarter-finals 5-2 on aggregate.

The defeat was their first at the Etihad since 2016, but it was a price worth paying as coach Pep Guardiola made sweeping changes to his team.

Six players from Sunday’s win over Chelsea were either benched or rested and, crucially, the five who sat on the sidelines – Ederson, Nicolas Otamendi, Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero – stayed there throughout.

David Silva wasn’t even in the squad, while his namesake Bernardo continued his rich vein of form by setting up City’s opener for Gabriel Jesus, who was making his first start since returning from injury.

The Portuguese midfielder scored in the first leg in Switzerland and also has two goals and an assist from his last four Gameweek starts.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling’s owners were left none the wiser to his availability for the Gameweek 30 trip to Stoke City on Monday, with the England man omitted from the squad.

Another of last night’s team, Ilkay Gundogan, could also be under threat as he has started eight of the last ten league matches.

A full 90 minutes, and goal, for Jesus shouldn’t cause Aguero’s 26.7% ownership too much alarm, at least for Monday evening’s match.

The Argentine has started eight straight league fixtures, while De Bruyne has been an ever-present and Otamendi has missed just one Gameweek, so all three were certainly due a rest.

But Jesus is being eased back into action after missing close to two months of football, with the frenetic schedule to follow their Gameweek 31 blank the period when Guardiola will have to call on all of his resources.

City’s postponed fixture at home to Brighton is likely to drop into a double Gameweek 34 also involving a trip to Spurs.

But there will be both legs of a Champions League quarter-final and domestic matches away at Everton and home to Man United to accommodate before that.

That marks out Gameweek 32’s trip to Goodison Park as a rotation hotspot in which Jesus could replace Aguero up front – prior to his injury, the Brazilian started nine of City’s first 11 away matches this season.

At the back, John Stones partnered Aymeric Laporte at centre-half and both played the full 90 minutes without ever truly convincing as a pair.

The Englishman had managed just nine minutes across the previous five Gameweeks and although Guardiola seems to view Otamendi and Vincent Kompany as his preferred centre-back combination, he can now choose from four of them to ramp up the potential for rotation at the heart of his defence.

City join Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-final draw, which will take place a week on Friday.

The ties will then be played on April 3/4 – prior to Gameweek 33 and 10/11 before Gameweek 34.

I really think Bournemouth players could be the best differentials for gw31. A double move for Stanislas and King against the hapless WBA is on the cards for me.

King on pens and Stanislas on free kicks so great options. I would check on spurs match though. Stanislas prone to injury. Ibe could come back in the reckoning if Bournemouth get whacked on Sunday

I'm just frustrated that I'm stuck with Ibe and Wilson now thaty're iether injured or out of form.. Would love to switch them around for a Stanislas-King-combo.

Looking to get in Ake/Daniels as well.

A couple of goals and an assist a few weeks back. Sticking with them through gw 31, and then it's time to change things up a bit.

Decent return at that price. I'm without a wildcard, so I'll keep my bournemouth players for gw 32 and 33 as well.

What FPL changes would we like to see for next season?
I would suggest the following changes to chips and to BPS:

    Chips:
    Keep the Wildcards.
    Get rid of Bench Boost.
Keep Free Hit but change its name to One Week Only, since the current name is a bit misleading and causes some confusion.
Replace the Triple Captain chip with a Two Captains chip (Captain and Vice-Captain scores both doubled).

That leaves the Wildcard, One Week Only and Two Captains chips, but there should be two of each - one to be used by 31st December and the other to become available from 1st January.

    BPS:
    1. Remove the negative points for being tackled and for shots off target.

    2. Big chances are not all the same, and neither are other chances - they are merely chances with xGs that are greater than some fairly arbitrary figure (0.5?).
So get rid of the big chances concept and use xG and xA instead.
Instead of awarding BPS points for creating a big chance, calculate the player's total xA for the match and award BPS points if this total is sufficiently large (say 2 points for every multiple of 0.5 in his total xA).
And instead of deducting BPS points for missing big chances, calculate the difference between the number of goals the player actually scored in the match (G) and the number an average player would have been expected to score from the same chances (his xG total), then award positive or negative BPS points accordingly (say +2 or -2 for every 0.5 in this difference).

I'd love a chip focusing on defenders, like the on they have in this years Eliteserien Fantasy.
Doubling defender clean sheet points like they do, or even doubling all clean sheet points (mids and goalies included) in your team.

I like the idea of having a full set of chips to play in the first half of the season, then getting a new set for the second half.

Also, less deductions in BPS that punish the more risky style of some of the more attacking players.

Checked the 29 gws and it turns out that “only” 8 winners can be accused for being one week wonders. 17 started in gw 1. Not as bad as I feared but still annoying when it happens. Every single one of them used a chip. One won it while being on a -40!

Strongly argue with having two sets of chips, one set which has to be used before January like the first Wildcard. Don't enjoy that the only time of the season we ever play chips is in the doubles/blanks at the end.

I like your chip ideas. BPS changes - I don't feel well informed enough to comment.
One thing I'd really (emphasised) like to see is a change to make the Kantes, Fernandinhos and Dembeles of this world much more attractive for inclusion in teams. At the moment these defensive midfielders are almost completely avoided.

The BPS system was last tweaked in 2015/16, when the numbers of BPS points for goalkeeper saves, CBI (clearances, blocks and interceptions) and successful tackles were increased, whilst the numbers for pass completion were reduced.
These changes should have increased the chances of players like Kante getting bonus points, but perhaps the balance is still not quite right.

Perhaps defensive midfielders should be reclassified as defenders?
They probably have more right to be considered as defenders than do some wingbacks!
But is Kante just a defensive midfielder?

Agree with this, probably the easiest way to deal with defensive midfielders so they can accrue clean sheet points as well.

Agreed with wanting to bring [all] of the players into the pool of usable players. I'd be happy to see a reduction in the number of points for actual goals, assists and clean sheets and also reduce/stop the negatives for failed dribbles and tackles, leaving more scope for bonus points being awarded to players heavily involved in the game without necessarily actually scoring/assisting/clean sheeting.

There would also need to be a rebalancing to give a small number of positive points for shots off target and increase the numbers for shots on target to compensate for the loss of goal/assist points and similar for defenders/keepers getting more points for actions (saves, tackles, clearances, blocks, etc.).

      Chips:
Happy enough with the chips as they stand (yes, I do prefer park the bus to any of the existing TC/BB/FH chips), but would love for all of them to be used twice - one before 1st January and the other after (just like the wildcard is now).

Free Hit chip - the name does cause confusion due to the term "hit" in FPL. I understand the origins of the term from cricket, where players get a "free hit" after a no-ball but language is one of the easiest things to improve.

Ideal world - I'd have four chips: Wildcard, triple captain (I love being forced to actually make a decision and having two captains or worse, make a change to the team after the results come in like auto-picking the highest captain reduces the skill in the game), bench boost and park the bus. Park the bus has the big advantage of promoting a different area of your team (defence) and forces you to make more choices. Equally, free hit is a nice idea but I don't like how the obvious use is either in a blank week or double week as it makes decisions easier.

More than anything I’d love a change to BPS or rules to enable defensive midfielders as valid options. The percentage of unusable players in the midfield list is crazy. Enhanced bonus for midfielders for CBI and a bigger share of the clean sheet above a certain threshold?

I would do away with free hit. It's an 'anti-strategy' chip - one of the main things I enjoy about FPL is the strategy flow from week to week. The Wildcard, for example, is a strategy chip - because it transcends gameweeks. At least the first one is - the second one tends to be used as a precursor to the bench-boost - another chip that doesn't do much for me. But free hit means you don't have to build a strategy around navigating BGWs and DGWs, so I'm against it. I preferred the AOA, to be honest. But not just for one week, as there's no real strategy in that. But give everyone four or five of them for the season, maybe more - now you can open up a few possibilities for using them.

Why shouldn't a strategy include use of the Free Hit chip?
The discussions about whether to use it in GW31 or GW35 or somewhere else are surely all about strategy.

I consider Bench Boost to be anti-strategy though. The rest of the season we try to spend most of our cash on the first eleven, at the expense of having a weak bench, and then suddenly we have reverse this strategy and spend more on the bench instead, just for the sake of scoring more in a single game-week. It would be more useful if it could be played in the same game-week as the Free Hit chip.

I didn't like the AOA chip myself, but perhaps 2-5-3 should be allowed as a permanently valid formation. In the past this might have resulted in 2-5-3 instead of 3-4-3 becoming the most effective formation, but the increased number of bonus points for defenders in the last 3 seasons, the emergence of high-scoring wingbacks, the high cost of the best attacking players and the shortage of good medium-priced forwards has even made playing 4 defenders regularly a good option this season.

        1. Pasqualinho
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 1 month ago

OK - maybe its semantics. What I mean is the longevity of the chip. The Free Hit is just for one week, doesn't matter what happens before or after it. Of course you use it as part of a strategy - but it's use itself is short-term and tactical.

      Keep the two wildcards.
Burn all the chips. Never speak of them again.

As for bps I agree with point 1, but would add that you shouldn't get bps for events that already give you normal points (goals, assist, cs ..). Instead you should, as in point 2, accumulate bps according to you xG and xA. For defenders this could become a combination of your xG-against and your contribution in terms of CBI.

What I'd also like to add as a point 3:
Every player in a match that reaches a certain threshold, say 20 bps, gets 1 bonus point. Everyone above 30 gets 2 points. Above 40 gets 3 points.
That the bonus points should be restricted to three players per match (yes, more if there's a tie for bps), regardless of how good/bad they've performed seems very arbitrary. So in a brilliant action-packed game there could be several 2s and 3s, and in a dour uneventful slugfest there could be none.

        Easy solution!

Let us use the chips once in the first half of the season, and once in the second half.

We can wildcard in each half, right?

Makes sense to use the other chips twice as well.

I would like the TC to be replaced with the C/VC both scoring double points. That's a quick win.
        I like FH.
BB is a bit meh, but does the job of maximising output from your squad for one potential week - yet to see a better way of doing that that I like, though.

Might be worth reposting my piece from earlier on today on how BPS could be changed too for that bit:

I love the current chips. Just that I find it boring to use the non-WC chips only once in the season. They force us to make a DGW strategy and all chips are utilised for that one single strategy. Nothing else. I find that a waste of these beautiful chips. Therefore, just like the WC, I would like them all to be used twice. That at least allows us to make additional strategic choices not limited to the DGWs.

im not so big on the idea of doubling the chips. id rather have different chips available (maybe like the norwegian ones) but you have to use half of them before Jan 1st like the 1st WC. Either they decide which ones have to be used in which part of the season or better still, its upto our discretion.

        I have one.

If your captain doesn't start during a gameweek then your vice captain should take over the captaincy no matter what, even if the initial captain comes on for like 5 mins at the end.

        Mini Leagues:
The number of leagues that can be entered increased to 20 or better again 25.

        Game Week Rank:
I would like to see a top ten of best game week rank scores and being able to sort by entered in game week one.
I am sick of seeing top gw rank teams being just entered for that gw under some obscure flag and stealing the glory from a genuine manager.

        Transfer Market:
When deciding on players starting price i would like to see +-£.5 binned for a more dynamic system where a player could start at lets say £10.2 or £7.7

        Cup competition:
I would like to see a cup competition for the first half of the season like the one that starts in gw19.

        Last Man Standing Competition:
I would like to see fpl introduce an LMS competition like TorresMagic's famous one but with a prize for the winner and an option to set up a LMS competition in game with mates from mini leagues.

        Chips:
Just get rid of the dammed things.

They could keep the 5 midfield slots available to us and in the transfers tab, split the midfield into defensive and attacking. You can have 5 of 1, 5 of the other or whatever combination you like.

Attacking midfielders get points as usual. Defensive midfielders get 2 or 3 pts for a clean sheet perhaps and more bps for clean sheets. Also they get more bps than a defender for cbi. This would make them much more appealing choices and you can choose whether you want 0/1/2/3/4/5 in your team..

I would like to see an overhaul of the bonus points allocation. Just by glancing at the bps, it's easy to tell it's silly. Rewarding people again for things they've been rewarded for already, and scaling it the opposite way around too (e.g. goals for defs>mids>forwards vs forwards>mids>defs). It's just ill-conceived, transparent, blatant bonkersness!

I think people have just got used to it, because I'm sure most people who actually take a look for the first time must be truly taken aback. - And then they get over it. Anyway, it's still astounding to me! 😆

I'd like it to be really basic. Remove all the repeated rewards and allow the players with the best cbi, passes made, (x)chances created, etc to earn points steadily for contributing during a game, rather than large jumps in bps for a single action.

This should allow for a closer representation of a good performance, rather than moments of luck or unluckiness.

This should make the bps itself more exciting, like a minigame within the game, as you watch players vie for the top of the bap table. You can see more transparently how the actions on screen relate to the Performance Score in the baps, and know it's not all going to be decided by a goal (which already decides other points allocations).

This would also increase the pool of legitimate options too, since the game wouldn't only be about assists, goals and CSs, but good individual footballers (plus still a lot about goals and assists). That's the main initial draw to FPL in the first place!

        ......

Taking it a step further: I've previously suggested that they should do away with all positions and let you choose whatever balance of players you feel you can afford within the budget (with the exception of the GK position). Then give each player an attacking and defensive responibility rating (e.g. 0-3) and multiply their contributions by that number.

        E.g.
CS = 1pt for players responsible for defence
Centre backs with a rating of 3 get 3 pts
Holding mids with a rating of 2 get 2pts
        Fullbacks/Wingbacks/Box to box mids, 1pt

This means you don't have to create a new position for CMs to encourage people to buy them, and you don't have to worry about whether Salah is a forward or not, or if Wingbacks should be a new category with it's own rules.

The main problem with this idea is that the change is too drastic to every be implemented, though I do think managers would get behind the idea after the initial shock!

When thinking about the FPL boredom and templates....

I also like the idea of increasing the cost of hits and either allowing you to save 3FTs or introducing more WCs. With more WCs, managers can afford to try to be a little different for a quarter of the season, or choose a team specifically for 4 GWs that they pinpoint to really attack with a different team. But with increase price of hits they can't change their team every week, which means the differentiation of teams and points should be larger.

How about a Power Play, as in limited overs cricket?

Not a fan tbh. I like WCs because you can choose when and how to play them. There's a lot of options and you can tailor them to your team. You can take risks knowing you can fix issues once a couple of times a season if all goes wrong, or play conservatively.

With FH and Power Play, a lot of the decisions could be made for you by coming to FFS and simply seeing what the best answer to the problem is.

One final idea that I like is that all bench players get half-points from the bench and full points if autosubbed on. More active players in your team each week = more potential for diversity between teams + diminished luck when your player suddenly gets a haul because he's autosubbed on instead of scoring 0.

Of course this would have to coincide with an increase in FTs or an increase of allowance maybe (to save 3FTs), as well as a change in points allocation (e.g. doubling points to avoid 0.5s).

My God just get rid of these effing chips.

They don't add anything to the game. They make things more vanilla and stifle creativity and risk-taking as the potential downside to not being a 'chip-sheep' is just too high.

Why do we have to pander to the ADHD generation by including these rubbish gimmicks? It's not necessary. Wildcards aren't even necessary- you can make as many transfers as you want in any GW, there's a just a penalty for doing so. Why do we need our hands held? If people are gonna give up on the game a few weeks in because they can't turn their badly-construed starting team into the exact same team as everyone else then good, let these mugs give up. Let them go back to their fast food and video games.

And these boards have become completely unreadable in the last few weeks with every second comment being some idiot dimwit asking everyone when they should use their chips. Every hot topic is about chips. Every youtube video, podcast and twitter post is about chips. It's awful.

This is my last season of FPL until they get rid of them, and I doubt they will. They've butchered the game with this crap and I don't even know why. AFL dream team is my fantasy game of choice. 30 trades for the season. Use them when you want. Patience is rewarded, good starting teams are rewarded.

Agree with the creativity-stifling tbh. Sure there are more than one way to use the FH chip, for example, but you still have to select one of the given strategies. Without the chip, the possibilities are much closer to endless.

Star Player - player with most bps across all games in a gw gets an additional 3pts.
Rush Keeper Chip - play eleven outfield players once a season.
Defensive Mid Category - similar scoring to defenders; minimum one in your team formation.

I would like to see a reduction in the points awarded for penalties scored. Given that the subsequent bonus points that often follow, a player can basically receive 7, 8 or even 9pts (double that if the player is captain) just for scoring a penalty. I think these are cheap points and just doesn't seem right. I would propose one of 2 things. Either award 2pts only if the goal scored is a penalty goal and this would be irrespective of whether the player is a defender, midfielder or striker - why should a player (defender, i.e Baines in the past) get 6pts for scoring a penalty whilst a striker only gets 4? The other option would be that the player does not get credited with any BPS for the goal if it's a penalty goal. I would also like to see the removal of -2pts for missing a pen. Players don't get deducted points for missing easy chances (like Sterling the other week) so why deduct points for missing a pen? What if it's an exceptional save from the keeper? Another change I would like to see introduced is a change in the scoring system for defenders. Unless it's an unusual player like Alonso who regularly gets attacking points, the minute 1 goal is conceded, you know your player is getting a 1 or 2 pointer even if no further goals are conceded. How about awarding 2pts if only 1 goal is conceded so a scoreline of 1-1 would mean your defender scores 4pts?

Just no chips in a DGW.
Doesn't matter what part of season played just not in a DGW.
Not complicated. Plenty of scope for points if you get it right.
Too template now to leave them until end of season. Probably not going to make too much difference to ORs as so many people will do the same thing.

The good options for GW34 seem to have great games now, so thought I'd get them in early.

None of them play in 31 though

            Get Robertson or Karius

De Gea and Vertonghen. The most nailed defensive assets in the two teams.

Kane, Wilson, Alonso --> Aubameyang, Firmino, Vertongen?

Need to get rid of Alonso to afford 2 good strikers...

I have Son, Sterling and Davis. Whom may all not even start.

Is it worth keeping them in my team for the time being, and pray.

Using my remaining 3 FT to get up to 9 GW31 players

So should I transfer of of these three and get in the likes of Mahrez or Sane. Leaving me with 8 GW31 players

(I dont want to take hits)

Same choice for me ... opting for Wilson at the moment due to playing at home to a deflated Spurs side. How much of an impact the CL result has is debatable and despite a lack of belief in Wilson myself, I just don't fancy Stoke to do anything away to City ... if anyone does though it will be Shaq :S

      a) Callum Wilson
      b) Josh King

Who for gw31? Who's the better player, more nailed?

Spurs are hardly guaranteed a CL spot, especially if they lose to Chelsea... would Poch really risk not playing Son?

No idea what to do here. Rivals (within 25 points in ML) have Martina/Walcott, but I'm not sure Martina keeps his place. 2 FT & 0.0 ITB. W/C in Week 32.

      De Gea (Elliot)
      Alonso Ota VVD Mee Ogbonna
      Salah Mahrez Sterling* (Doucoure McArthur)
      Kane Firmino (Wilson)

      (a) Ogbonna to Martina and save other transfer for next week
      (b) Mee to Schindler and save other transfer for next week
      (c) Sterling/Ogbonna to Walcott/Schindler
      (d) Sterling/Ogbonna to Shaqiri/Coleman
      (e) Any other suggestions?

Who to use for a Free Transfer in GW 31?

Already have Wilson and Firmino should I also do,

      A) Niasse for Kane
      B) King for Kane
      C) Benteke for Kane
      D) None of the above.
      E) Someone else and if so who?

Didn't watch the match but fair play to arsenal, never gave them chance (as usual!)
