A stifling and clinical display from Manchester United earns them a 2-1 win over Liverpool as Mohamed Salah blanks for only the third time in 21 Gameweek starts.

The Old Trafford crowd doesn’t normally go home happy when their side has allowed opponents 68% possession and been out-shot 14-5.

But when it leads to a victory over Liverpool, it’s all about ends justifying means.

United had just two shots on target all match and both led to Marcus Rashford goals.

The first came when a Romelu Lukaku header sent the England man through to beat Trent Alexander-Arnold and finish with aplomb.

Rashford then doubled the advantage before the break, with Liverpool gaining some reward for their second-half dominance when the returning Eric Bailly sliced Sadio Mane’s cross into his own net.

That assist, together with four dribbles and a match-high three chances created, earned the Senegal international two bonus points, while Rashford earned the maximum.

The Reds strove in vain for an equaliser, but of the 14 attempts they had, only one came from Salah.

The Egyptian was captained by 966,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers (16.6%), while 27.2% of his 3.5 million owners skippered him, although he was not the most popular armband choice for the first time since Gameweek 27.

Harry Kane took that accolade this weekend as Salah’s run of six goals from the last five Gameweeks came to an end in a match where United kept him to just three touches in the box, and one chance created.

The 41.6%-owned Roberto Firmino was more productive – he had three attempts and created one chance – and the market in Liverpool’s front three will no doubt remain busy ahead of their Gameweek 31 fixture at home to Watford.

Investment elsewhere in the side is more difficult to justify.

In central midfield, coach Jurgen Klopp rang the changes by bringing in James Milner for Jordan Henderson, while this week’s partner for Virgil van Dijk was again Dejan Lovren, preferred to Joel Matip at centre-half for the second Gameweek running.

Alexander-Arnold made a fifth successive start at right-back, although the ease with which he was beaten by Rashford for the opening goal won’t further his cause with Joe Gomez back to full fitness and Nathaniel Clyne close to a return as well.

Probably the strongest case for Gameweek 31 inclusion outside the attacking trio comes from Van Dijk, whose two attempts from set-pieces today was a reminder of his attacking credentials.

United for the future

Interest in United assets is likely to be deferred for now.

Gameweek 31 is a blank, as they’ll face Brighton in the FA Cup quarter-finals, and we won’t be going back to their players until the result of that tie is confirmed.

If they get past the Seagulls and into the last four, then they will doubtless be a source of talent for managers deploying their Wildcard in Gameweeks 32 or 33 and their Free Hit chip in Gameweek 35 – when the semi-finals take place.

We’re still awaiting confirmation on or around March 19 of Gameweek 34 being a double. If so, United would face a trip to West Ham and a visit from West Brom.

By then, only a home match with Arsenal looks troublesome in their run-in, although they remain in the Champions League to raise the spectre of rotation.

Against Liverpool, Rashford delivered his first goals since Gameweek 16, while Lukaku’s flick-on for the opener means that he’s produced either a goal or an assist in six of his last eight starts now (four goals, three assists).

But the Belgian had just one shot on goal today, although that was one better than Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean was deployed as a No10 behind Lukaku and had only two penalty area touches and no shots. He did, however, create two opportunities for team-mates, one of which was a big chance.

Paul Pogba failed a late fitness test after reports surfaced on Friday evening that he had suffered a gashed leg in training, as confirmed by Jose Mourinho.

“He is injured. [It happened] yesterday in training, an unlucky situation, and he is out. I don’t know how long he is out for.”

The midfielder’s place went to Juan Mata, while Rashford’s encouraging performance from the bench against Crystal Palace earned him his first start since Gameweek 21.

Jesse Lingard (10.8%) dropped to the bench, while David De Gea was subbed out by 10.4% of his 2.5 million owners today and has now managed just one clean sheet and three save points from the last six Gameweeks.

Lingard, Pogba and the injured Phil Jones are all in the top five for transfers-out heading into their blank Gameweek 31 and, with a trip to Man City looming in Gameweek 33, more sales of United assets look likely before their schedule turns favourable for the season’s final push.

Hey everyone. I have been super busy lately, and life has gotten in the way of FPL. shame on me, yes I know.
Anyway, I've dropped to second in my mini league, and have absolutely no idea about whats happening with DGWs in the future.
I do however have all my chips still to play.

SO, with only 4 players having games next week, I'm gonna free hit for next week, and then spend some time planning wildcard, TC and BB to end out the season.

My question is, Who should I be considering for my FH?
At the moment Im thinking 3 big Liverpool up top, Firmino, Mane and Salah, cos I wanna grab those goal points, but maybe ill miss out on a cleanie? I dunno. I also like Siggi, Shaqiri, Mounie, Baines, Dawson and Daniels.

Who am I missing? thanks in advance

How would this look for a - 8?

    Butland

    Robertson Coleman Ake

    Salah Shaqiri Walcott Zaha

    Wilson Firmino

The players being brought in are Butland, Coleman, Ake & Zaha. Any of them I'd be better off without and only take a -4?

    I have created a new mini-league (Last 8 Game-Weeks, 757-1280283) which will start scoring in GW31.

It should be interesting to see which chip strategy proves most effective over the final 8 game-weeks of the season.

If you would like to test your strategy against others then you are welcome to join this mini-league.

Not really fair to assess chip strategy over last 8 weeks alone as those playing FH in 31 should theoretically have had an advantage for a good few weeks leading up to GW31.

I see that Shirin Nizar, the leader of my January to May League (which started scoring in GW22) is also currently lying third in 'The home stretch' (which started scoring in GW28. I presume that is Jay's mini-league.

True, but we have to start somewhere and GW31 seems as good a place as any to do so. The results may not provide the definitive answer, but they should still be interesting.

Last season, someone created a couple of mini-leagues called "GW26 on, chaos begins" and "Going Out with a Bang", the latter starting in GW34, so this one is about half-way in between.

If I do an analysis at the end then I may perhaps also look back at a few preceding game-weeks, as well as at how many hits have been taken in GW31.

Yes, my league is really only measuring who can use their chips to get the most points in GW31-38.

Also, 'Last 8 Game-Weeks' wasn't a great mini-league title, so I've changed it to 'GW31 on: Doubles, Blanks & Chips'.

People were escorted from the stadium for fear of their safety. Fans turned their back on the game to aggressively abuse them and even try to invade their personal space in an attempt to intimate and perhaps cause harm. No sign of either a stewed or a cop. More than a few were involved, there were hundreds at it. Not to mention the complete f*c*in knob ends who were allowed on to the pitch. Hopefully they get a 6 point deduction

What you are describing are the actions of pissed off fans at a ground. Having just watched it they were justified to hurl sbuse at the owners. They pay large sums of their own hard earned cash to watch crap like that . How much do you spend week in week out to go and support your team? You will never stop fans going onto the pitch if they are determined enough . The owners were escorted away from the fans to calm the situation not for fear of their safety.

Thankfully, in a democracy, what people decide what to spend their money on is their business. I like to keep my business to myself, but thanks for asking twice.

                Regarding idiotic behavior :-
                Pitch invasions
                Racism

If you spend your hard earned going to games then I apologise but I rather suspect you don't . A great deal of what you describe above has been generally eradicated and many of those instances are prevalent in society in general . Therefore specifically regarding football your arguments are to a great extent nullified. Fights , racist abuse , intimidation, poor behaviour in the presence of children are general problems which are not unique to football.
So again how many games do you actually attend live ?

Which team do you have a season ticket for ?
Strange that I can't find any previous mention of this .

Massive relevance. If you are viewing these events through the eyes of the media then you receive their spin on events . If you are paying your own money to attend then you are far more likely to actually see what is occurring both on and off the pitch. You are also far more likely to have a balanced opinion based on observation . If you don't actually go to any matches then you are relying on second parties for your information and your very general statements are society problems not just restricted to football.

Of course they are when they are spending big money to watch the team . Are you saying that they should kerp quiet and just accpet the rubhish they are being served up by the players and the drap they have been promised by the owners ? You haven't actually directly answered one of my questions .

Must have been a deadly buzz in Old Trafford great day for us United fans.

Hopefully other teams will take note of how to neutralize Liverpool and knock them of there perch on the run in.

Is there a chance of Gomez playing for GW 31? Or should I use a FH and go for VVD/Robertson?

    1. Ibracadabra
      • 16 Years
      7 years, 9 months ago

That shouldn't be the one factor forcing a free hit, if you have 6-7 players already, I would not FH. If you have 5 or less, or only 1-2 LIV, then I probably would...

Ogbonna, Son, Vardy -> Coleman, Zaha, King (-4) is my current free hit plan. Have 2 FTs in the bank, this brings me up to 10 playing players. Can't fit Shaqiri and Zaha in unless Walcott is ruled out, so going to take a punt on Wilf.

    Foster
Coleman - Francis - Van Dijk
    Walcott - Zaha - Salah (c) - Chuopo Moting
    King - Firmino (vc)

Pretty content with 10 players. Can change Zaha to Shaqiri depending on how Stoke look v City, news on Zaha's fitness, etc.
