To offer a greater insight into the Norwegian top flight game we caught up with Eurosport reporter and avid Fantasy Eliteserien player Jonas Bergh-Johnsen.

As well as working for Norway’s Eliteserien broadcaster he has also been involved in developing Fantasy Eliteserien, including player prices and the new chips.

Niemi: You’re an avid Fantasy Premier League player. What’s your best finish in Fantasy Premier League?

Jonas: 228.

Niemi:How did last season go for you in Fantasy Eliteserien?

Jonas: 368. I was in a horrible position halfway through the season, but ended strongly.

Niemi: Besides the alternative bonus system and chips, what’s the biggest difference between Fantasy Premier League and Fantasy Eliteserien in your opinion?

Jonas: The top teams are more unpredictable. There are less safe picks from the top teams that are worth their premium price tag. Last year we had a situation where the players from the lower half teams were priced too low, and at the same time the expensive players didn’t deliver and had low ownership. If you were catching the price rises early on you ended up with a high team value. The budget was never an issue, and the game became too easy.

Niemi: You have been heavily involved in the pricing of the players in Fantasy Eliteserien this year.  How do you decide the players prices?

Jonas: It was an easier task this year, as we had to start from scratch last year. This season we had more numbers to work with. We did have to do some more research on the newly promoted teams. In fact all of the clubs have people interested in Fantasy, either in the staff or the players themselves, so we did use them as well. We listened to what the clubs themselves had to say.

Players that are new to the league are harder to price, as we don’t know what to expect from them. In general we did price the players higher this year. Some of them might be priced a bit higher than they should based on what they did last year, but the prices in general had to go up. We have probably priced some players wrongly, but that will always happen. Last year we had teams like Molde and Vålerenga who we expected to do really well, and therefore had players priced accordingly. In the end most of them didn’t live up to their price.

Last year we looked at the same model Fantasy Premier League are using, and looked at how they are pricing the players. Two of the other guys involved in the pricing were Martin Sleipnes and Vegard Vaagbø, both experienced Fantasy Premier League players. We all knew the principles, but it was hard to get the prices right as Eliteserien is much more unpredictable than the Premier League.

Niemi: Do you have any insight in how the price changes works this year? Have there been any changes from last year?

Jonas: I’m not sure how these algorithms works. Very few people know exactly how they work, sometimes they’re very unpredictable. We ordered the same game as Fantasy Premier League from the same developers, so in principle the changes should be the same. Because of the fewer amount of players the price changes are probably triggered faster. We haven’t asked for any changes to the transfer market from the developers, except for when Ohi Omoijuanfo got that 0.5 rise during one night last year. I owned Ohi when that happened, but it was really frustrating as it wasn’t fair.

Niemi: In hindsight, do you think you have priced any players wrongly?

Jonas: I regret we didn’t price Wormgoor and Teniste at 6.0. It also seems like the Molde midfielders might be a lot better this year, so guys like Hestad at 7.0 and Aursnes at 6.0 might be priced lower than they should. There was also a mistake with the Ranheim defenders. They are all priced at 4.5. I’m not sure what happened there, that wasn’t on purpose.

Niemi: Last year we had quite a few “out-of-position” players in the game. Some have been given a new position this year, while some have the same position as last year. Gilli Rolantsson is still a defender in the game, even though he started as a winger in all  of Brann’s games. What’s the reasoning for this?

Jonas: We discussed it with Brann themselves. At that point they were confident he would mostly play as a full back. We could either go with a midfielder that might end up playing as a defender, or a defender that could play as a midfielder. In the end we put him as a defender, and gave him a higher price than the others. I’m not sure if he’s worth it even as a left winger at that price though, maybe if he can find some form.

We also spoke to Lillestrøm about Melgalvis, Rafn and Knudtzon when deciding their position, so the input from the clubs have been taken into consideration here. We could have put Knudtzon as a striker as well, but decided to keep him as a midfielder as we like a possible out-of-position player. There’s room for that in this game. There’s always a few out-of-position players emerging through the season.

Niemi: You have also been involved in the process of picking the new chips for this season. Why couldn’t you go with the same chips as in Fantasy Premier League? How did you decide the three chips?

We couldn’t pick the same chips because Fantasy Premier League had the exclusive rights to them, and they didn’t want to share the chips with anyone else. The Wildcard is free for anyone to use though. We sat down to find three new chips that weren’t too powerful, but at the same time they couldn’t be too weak either. In the end we chose two fun chips in my opinion, in “Striker Rush” and “Park the Bus”, and a more dull chip in “Double Captain”.

We considered a few options. At first we had quadruple captain when using “Striker Rush” and “Park the Bus”, as you had the possibility of captaining one of your players in addition to double points for all your strikers. In the end we decided it would be too powerful. A lot of the options we considered gave out too many points. We also considered double points for every midfielders, but then we would have three very similar chips. “Double Captain” was the chip we ended up with. In my opinion it’s the dullest, but it could be a good chip during a double gameweek.

Niemi: Which chip do you think will be the most powerful?

Jonas: “Striker Rush”. The number one overall used it the first week and hit the jackpot. I guess that’s the one most likely to bring more points. “Park the Bus” could also give you a lot of points if you manage to bring in Double Gameweek defenders.

Niemi: Besides the obvious picks like Ohi, Haugen and Koomson, who do you expect could do well during the Double Gameweeks coming up?

Jonas: I started out with Granli and Vetlesen as cheap budget option, but most likely they won’t get too many points. I also got Jonsson on my bench, as I expect him to get back into the starting XI, and kept Wormgoor on my bench during the first Gameweek even though he had a blank. This week I bought Koomson for my team.

I do regret not getting Kabran though. I wasn’t sure how good he was and there were also rumours that he was going to be benched. Him, Sigurdarson and Børufsen are fighting for two spots in the team, and I’ve heard he hadn’t been very good in training until the final week. They considered benching him for the first game, and give him a 30 minute appearance from the bench. Combined with the fact that he blanks this gameweek, I decided to give him a pass at first. I’ll definitely get him in before his Double Gameweek.

I also considered getting Hou Sæter over Vetlesen as I expect him to get some attacking returns, but in the end I couldn’t find the extra 0.5.

Niemi: Which players are essential in your opinion?

Jonas: In my opinion it’s too soon to pick players that are essential. Nothing has settled yet. There might be some rotation at Molde and Strømsgodset, I’m not sure if Fardal Opseth can keep it up yet, Adegbenro is too expensive in my opinion,  slippery pitches and cold weather don’t suit Helland and Bendtner. However, The day Bendtner starts firing he becomes essential.

I did listen to the “Fantasy FK” podcast, where they had been looking at the Rosenborg players Fantasy teams: Only one out of eight had Bendtner in their team, they all had Helland instead. I do like Wormgoor at 5.5, he’s a bonus magnet, likely to score a few goals and might be on a few set pieces. He was probably the first name in my squad.

Niemi: Which players do you see as potential bargains?

Jonas: I would definitely look at Stabæk players, there’s a lot of value in there.

Niemi: Eirik Ulland Andersen, a player with high ownership, is going under the knife and will miss at least next gameweek. Who’s a good replacement in your opinion?

Jonas: I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t find out he had an operation scheduled. I wouldn’t have had him in my team if I’d have known. Koomson looks like a good pick, that’s who I went for. I would also get in Kabran as soon as he has a fixture, he’s fairly cheap as well.

Niemi: Who will be a good differential for the next Gameweek?

Jonas: Ejuke is probably my pick this week. He looked fresh against Kristiansund, and he’ll most likely pick up a lot of bonus points even though he doesn’t score. He is easy to notice as he’s running with the ball a lot, so I think the commentators are likely to reward him with bonus points. Grindheim at Haugesund, and Saltnes and Hauge from Bodø/Glimt could be good differentials as well, but maybe not for this week.

Niemi: Who’s your captain this week?

Jonas: Got to be the lord – Bendtner.

Niemi: Do you believe anyone can challenge Rosenborg for the title this season?

Jonas: No.

Do Haugesund look dodgy at the back? I probably was taking one punt too many doubling up on FKH at the back haha

They looked dodgy towards the end of last season as well. I don't think Molde created too much today based on what I've heard, I didn't see the game though. I would surprised to see Haugesund get as many clean sheets as last season.

Well that went interestingly. The postponed game maybe saved me from Nguen on the bench, although not sure what to do with him & Amang now.

Same here. Although if I did not have double Molde then I would have Wormgoor, who got 15 points yesterday.

      38 -4, pretty average.

When are we likely to know the date of the two postponed games?

Hopefully we will hear before deadline but I am not holding my breath. I expect a DGW in GW4 and GW6 .
What is the forecast for the next two weeks with the weather? Last season no weather postponements to contend with. So this makes this start more interesting and harder to get squad balance but I do not think it matters at this early stage. I am planning on putting up any score for the first few weeks and then WC and push the season from there.

GW4 & 6 already have an extra game allocated, and it would be nice for the postponed games to slot in the same gameweeks to give a better double 🙂

That is the way I hope it will go and have set up my squad to that so far. Injury and form will dictate when I play my first WC and that could be GW5 for a chip play in GW6 if the fixtures run good for that week. Enough should be known about player and team form by then for an educated decision.

So, Amang, no flag yet. Pre-cautionary or just Solskjaer shifting tactics? Or is he really injured?

Could keep for a week and just use money itb, do Sørli to Kabran and bench Amang

Apparently went off with a knock. Should be fine, but then Molde have strikers like Chima Chukwu and Håland lurking around.

Good score btw, I ended up with a horrible low score of 23. Only managed to field 7 (+ no Wormgoor)

Ouch, but this game seems to be a bit of a roller coaster.

How do you like my plan, getting Kabran in? Benching headache yes, but at this point it seems a good bench is a big plus

Odds ballklubb playing a friendly in 4 hours from now:.. 2nd string and youngsters no doubt.

Sandefjord played a friendly this weekend. Lost 3-1 against an average second tier side. No Seck and Gana Kane though, but Reppesgård Hansen back from injury. Sadly that doesn't say anything about where Grorud stands.

Other notes: Jonsson back in goal for Sandefjord and Olsen Solberg subbed with an injury after 38 minutes.

I don't find Reppesgård himself interesting, but I am interested in where Grorud stands when the other CB's are fit.

Seck and Gana Kane not involved is interesting though. Sold? Injured? Can't find anything.

Me neither, just wanted a Sandefjord defender for those 2 homegames in dgw but now feel it may well be worth swapping to another team even though he is fit. Could not afford Olsen Solberg, which in hindsight might have been a blessing

I fully expect Tromsø - Strømsgodset in GW4, can't see any reason not to place it there.

Ranheim - Brann is worse to predict. I guess it's either GW6 or later in the season.

Not sure what to make out of the Nguen benching. If they play 4231 I think he'll play, but hard to find room for him in a 352. When Ulland Andersen is back we'll probably see 4231 more often than 352, right now I don't know.

I have all your "problems", as well as a few players I really wanted, and I wildcarded yesterday 😉

Wondering about the same thing myself. Went with Hestad for GW2, and feel that I might have made a mistake there.

Is Hestad to Aursnes a sideways/unnecessary transfer to make?

Will no doubt have to deal with the Stokke situation myself, but a -4 looks tempting to make.

Hestad to Aursnes very much a sideways move, especially as you got Stokke to deal with.

Stokke is a priority, but the cheaper prize and the points Aursnes has scored so far, makes it a tempting move. Don't have a Molde defender/keeper either, but might wait until after the match at Lerkendal, now.

Not sure. At the moment he seems like better value than Hestad, but not 100% convinced he'll outscore him. Penalties is a big plus. Based on what we know right now I'd probably go Aursnes, but I'm not 100% convinced.

Amang (50%) and Lehne Olsen (75%) are flagged right now. Hopefully I will not have to use my transfer on an injury. Was thinking about saving it for the DGW.

Same, I've got 2FT but need to use them elsewhere.

At least if those two are injured there are alternatives with good GW3 fixtures and DGWs coming up.

Kabran got a knock as well. Start's friendly tomorrow called of because they only have 12 outfield players at the moment.

Well done to the game leader though. 83 points GW 1 and a 99 pointer on "Park the buss" chip now in the planned BGW, nothing really shocking in the team either, just well put together.

                Current squad:
                Hansen - Barli
                Tønne - Kitolano - Haakenstad - Glesnes - Hanche-Olsen
                Adegbenro - Komsoon - Vetlesen - Hestad - Saltnes
                Bendtner - Stokke - Opseth
                (1.0 in the bank)

The postponed matches doesn't help anyone as far as transfers go, but at least there has been some matches giving an indication to things. My priority for next GW i Stokke out for another striker. Floki/Skålevik looks to be the main strikers in that price range, but undecided on who. Thoughts?

Looking ahead, there's need for more Molde cover, I think. Crazy taking out Hansen? Wormgoor looks to be a must-have, as well. Not to keen on taking a -4, but it could be tempting.

I think Floki will be a good option, great fixtures.

I probably wouldn't take a hit for Wormgoor when they're away at Godset next.

Difficult to say if you're thinking about Hansen → Linde. Both the best value routes into their respective defences. At least Hansen managed to get a bonus point out of 2 saves and Rosenborg should improve.

Good point about the fixtures for Floki. Might have to go with Stokke→ Floki, then.

Was thinking about Hansen → Linde, yes. Although, the money in the bank makes it possible to upgrade in defense, while keeping Hansen. Nice surprise to see a bonus point for Hansen last weekend, that's for sure!

Hope Amang and Lehne Olsen are fit for GW3.

My team's not in dreadful shape but there are definite issues, Linde was the only one who didn't blank this week. Took a punt on triple Odd for their first two games which failed miserably but at least I saved 2FT to take out Ruud and Rashani.

New injury concerns are worrying. Really don't want to have to wildcard, hoping I can prepare for DGWs with a hit or two at most. Just gonna wait until closer to the next games to see how things are shaping up, hopefully we'll know about rescheduled games soon.

                Weekly Summary

This is just my view of the gameweek's events, my knowledge is limited and if you want to correct anything I say please feel free, and jump in with your opinion anyway 🙂

                1. Weather postponements are unlikely to be announced with us in mind, as the SIF/TIL game has clearly shown us. Free transfers and an active bench have become more precious than ever. We've currently got two (?) games which need to be rescheduled, with more possible to come as games progress. Late transfers no longer just look wise; they're practically mandatory.

                2. Bandwagons are picking up, with the Molde defence picking up two clean sheets in a row, Wormgoor hitting a 15 pointer, Valerenga's Johnson and Jonaton Tollas providing value despite fixtures.

                3. Rife injury has also hit us unfortunately, with several popular picks such as Amang, Lehne Olsen, EUA, and Forren all out. This plus a poor run of form from Rosenborg has left many of our teams decimated, with wildcards not much an option to turn to in light of the Blank and Double Gameweeks coming up thick and fast around us. Are hits really feasible in this volatile league of ours?

                  1) Apparently the date for the two postponed games will be set today. There are now an international break. Weather in April should not be an issue at all.

The Tromsø - Strømsgodset game would have been fine if it didn't snow heavy right before kick off. They shovelled the snow off the pitch, and it took like 5 minutes before it was totally covered in snow. The pitch itself is fine, Tromsø played a friendy yesterday on the same pitch as the Eliteserien match should have been played on.

                  2) Indeed, there are some bandwagons leaving right now!

                  3) Hits are definitely an option, but quite a few players are expected to be fit in two weeks time (Lehne Olsen one of them). All games in gameweek 3 are played on Monday 2nd April, so there are plenty of time to recover from small injuries. As said I would be really surprised to see more postponements as there are no more games until April, and we'll know when all DGW matches will be played really soon (hopefully today). WC is an option, if your team is a real mess or you haven't set your team up for the upcoming double gameweeks.

I don't think Forren and Amang injuries were serious either (although haven't had an update yet), but rotation is a worry for Amang. EUA have an outside chance of being back for GW3, but most likely back sometime between GW4 and GW6.

That's relieving about Amang and Lehne Olsen. Even if one looks like starting the other can leave for Ohi who once again seems in good form with good fixtures and a DGW coming up.

I worry a bit about bandwagons, especially if they keep performing, and you find yourself unable to jump on that train. Considering a -4, but won't make a movie until very late.

Two bad gameweeks so far here, but a full round with everyone (hopefully) playing, might change that. Maybe there will finally a chance to start Tønne!

I have double Sandefjord defense (not sure how wise), Asen, Jradi, Glesnes for GW4. Not sure if I want anyone from Ranheim.

Brann looks excellent for GW6. Wormgoor will be a must then I assume. I wanted to take out Glesnes and get him in but DGW for Glesnes makes it harder to decide. May take out Remmer though.

Sandefjord are a brain-twister..... double homegames against "easy" opponents should usually be a no-brainer... but Sandefjord have been so poor in pre-season and league opener (including a friendly in place of GW2 where they lost to a tier 3 team) that I just can't feel confident going for them....

Reginiussen with 4 shots (all headers I think), the Rosenborg CB. Also both Reginiussen and Rasmussen have hit the bar, and Konradsen has 3 shots on target.

It has to be said it's still a small sample. Rosenborg dominated Kristiansund without creating too much. They must have had 15-20 corners, part of the reason why Hedenstad and Helland have such a high amount of crosses and Reginiussen has so many shots.

Regarding the Sand(efjord) trap in dgw.
How did they look stats-wise gw1?
                    (Big) chances created?
                    Chances allowed?
                    Passing %?
                    Etc etc....

Small sample size of course so would be awesome if someone with knowledge took upon himself the task of putting the stats together after gw3 game. Total and per respective game(gw1 and gw3) so we can see it they are improving in any areas.
I imagine most of us were enticed by a defender or 2 plus Kastrati.
                    But now things look bleak.

They looked horrible, but then again they played Molde away. If it's worth anything they have looked bad in preseason. Lost 3-1 against an average second tier side this weekend.

Thinking about actually staying away from Sandefjord cover in the DGW. Might stretch to Kastrati, but - depending on other issues, I will most likely focus on other (non-DGW) teams.

The second DGW in GW6 plays a part too, depending on if you are wildcarding before GW4, in GW5 or not at all. But then, even this messes with your head, since it's "do you have space for Sandefjord players and still prepare for GW6" vs. "Sandefjord has KBK at home in GW5, and a weak-looking Tromsø-side in GW6 as well".....

My draft is setup for 9 doublers GW4 & 9/10 in GW6. Involves one SAN out quickly, and holding the other.

May prove ott, but the way others' fixtures fall makes it both doable and retainable after GW6 with gradual transfers (except Rosenborg - if they go nuts it's a problem, but pragmatically only for GW5, and perhaps GW3 subject to plannng a transfer/not),

                          Help! My team is broken!

                          Linde - McDermott
                          Hedenstad - Stølås - Kitolano - Gabrielsen(!) - Moe(!)
Konradsen - Ulland Andersen(!) - Zachariassen - Gamst Pedersen - Vetlesen
Stokke(!) - Lehne Ohlsen(!) - Bendtner

2 reds flags, 3 yellows, Wc worthy??

Shit... thats why you were on the WC in the first place 😛

Nah, I'd deffo be looking long-lines at both the GW4 and GW6 DGW, but there is so divided opinion on the combinations there it's hard to recomend one way or the other.....

The difficulty here is obviously that Brann, Start, Ranheim, Sandefjord, Godset, Tromsø and Sandefjord have only played 6 games so far this season. There's not a lot of information to go on.

Any thoughts on chip use with the upcoming doubles? From what I have read double gameweeks are rarer here, so could it be that there won't be many better opportunities to use them this season? The issue would be that the teams involved aren't the strongest.

Maybe double captain on the likes of Jradi and Pedersen – or spissrush on Skålevik, Ohi and Floki.

Park the bus could be useable GW6 for Wormgoor, Tønne, a Stabæk defender, and others with a good single gameweek fixture. GW4 also looks good for this.

Last season we had two DGW fixtures, both in different gameweeks. This season we already have four fixtures, two in GW4 and two in GW6. Definitely viable to use some chips, if you find a plan you like.

There is a possibility that there could be some more. The two fixtures last season were moved because of European qualification. The association allow the clubs to get their games moved if they want. Odd and Haugesund had their games moved last season, Brann and Rosenborg didn't. This season Rosenborg, Molde, Sarpsborg and Lillestrøm are the teams that will try to qualify for CL/EL. There COULD be a DGW involving them second half of the season, but we don't know that.

I would recommend Sarr owners to sell him, and those without him should stay away.

Other news, a Molde player was charged with ra*e (filter..) today. Was accused of r*pe last summer.

Norway beat Australia 4-1 in a friendly today, starting line up Jarstein, Elabdellaoui, Ajer, Reginiussen (scored), Meling Eltounoussi, Henriksen, Midstjø, Johansen, Kamara (hattrick), Johnsen. I'm not up to date with the team (aside from ES) so don't recognise most of them, assume a lot play outside of Norway?

ES is a bit of an export league, so most players will at some point play in other leagues.

Other names you may have come across there:

Henriksen is the midfielder Hull brought in last season.
Elyounoussi is the Basel winger that scored and assisted to beat Man.City in CL (rumored target for Arsenal this summer)
                                Johansen is the Fulham midfielder.
Jarstein is Hertha Berlin's living wall

Moi Elyounoussi has the potential to be Mahrez-esque. Hope Leicester are in for him because he'd thrive in that system with his pace and skillset. Want him to avoid Arsenal if Wenger is still around next season. Too much uncertainty surrounding them and Wenger has struggled to get the best out of his players for over a decade now.

Agree on this, and this is an Arsenal fan speaking. Current climate/uncertainty at Arsenal isn't something you'd want as a new player. If there is a managerial change this summer, then it might be a potential option. still think a Leicester with Puel in charge s better.

Lehne Olsen to Ohi (c) done, so much easier not having to constantly tinker as I am on my FPL wildcard at the moment.

Have had two captain fails in a row so far (EUA, Lord), who's everyone else going for this week?

Tough one.... I'm of a belief that Rosenborg will turn around vs. Odd, and Helland will have a fieldday against youngster Kitolano, so I'm backing Helland as my cap I think.

Molde players might be hot picks taking on Tromsø at home, and there are differential-options in Start and Bodø/Glimt that might tempt some.

No stand out option for me. I like the look of Kabran and he has a really nice fixture, so he's my captain at the moment. For what it's worth I don't have Helland or any Molde attacker other than Amang.

Amang started today for Molde in a friendly, so he's fit.

Grøgaard played really well yesterday for Odd and assisted two goals as well. Bad news for Kitolano, who had a bad game vs. Vålerenga in GW2. Kitolano was away with Norway U19 (or U21)
