The Gameweek concludes at Stamford Bridge with a titanic London derby as Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur in a battle that will surely go a long way to deciding the top four placings.

Ironically, Fantasy managers will be more concerned about a player named on the bench today as Harry Kane makes a shock recovery from an ankle injury to figure in the Spurs squad.

Kane will doubtless see minutes late on, and his return will give us much to consider before a Gameweek 33 visit to Stoke City.

In the meantime, Son Heung-min will continue to lead the Spurs attack having struck four goals in his last two starts. He was the most signed midfielder ahead of Saturday’s deadline, claiming 174,000+ new owners.

But Chelsea have their own in-form midfield option. Willian heads into this match off the back of four goals and three assists from his previous six Gameweek starts; that includes a 33-minute appearance at Watford. The Brazilian was a popular Wildcard target and is backed by 133,000 new owners in today’s clash.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Toughie but I'll think I'll try to avoid him until GW 36, that win puts the Spuds 8 points clear of Chelsea now so i'm pretty sure that there'll be rotation in the starting line up for the DGW ahead of the semi final with Man Utd, of course one solid return against Stoke next weekend may change my mind again.

Now do I take some risks and at least try to catch the leader or do I accept I probably won't catch him, play sensible and consolidate my ml victory.

Watch the replay. Stop the replay right after the deflection off Alonso. Then draw the line between Alonso and the left post. Watch how far on the left of that line that Caballero stands. The ball is clearly going out wide. How did the deflection not significantly change the trajectory?

That was the view of Opta and ISM - it got thoroughly reviewed and it was felt that the first touch was not significant enough before the rebound. Arguable whether its on target and whether the keeper would have had to make the save regardless of the touch. I've seen it many times and I think the shot may have forced the save without Alonso's touch. But, of course, it can be argued and it's a very tough one.

Why is it arrogant to explain the decision? Surely it's worse - and arrogant - to say nothing as it was in past seasons.

The tweets are designed to explain why decisions are made and articles have been written and published on this to try to outline the guidelines. What would you prefer, no explanation at all?

These decisions are made lightly and so much effort goes into making sure there's consistency but it is very difficult.

I wish the assist rules could be simplified and just rely on normal Opta assists but, sadly, with the Fantasy Assist, it creates these scenarios.

        1. Ramboros
          • 14 Years
          8 years, 10 days ago

"If a shot ON GOAL is blocked by an opposition player, is SAVED by a goalkeeper OR hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded."

OPTA acknowledges that Son had 2 shots in the 65th minute. Caballero only has 1 save in the same minute, from the first shot of Son. OPTA evidently do not think that Caballero made a save, but that the shot was blocked from Alonso. The rules clearly state that a keeper has to make save for it to count as a rebound. Ergo the rebound did come off Alonso, not Caballero. When Caballero touches the ball, the rebound no longer counts.

How can it be called a rebound off of Caballero when he did not make save? Did Caballero also block the ball after Alonso had his first block? OPTA evidently disagrees, as Caballero did not make a block in the game. So this is not a case of two different players blocking the ball.

The rules clearly state that a shot can only be given as an assist if it goes ON TARGET. According to FPL towers the ball did not significantly alter it's intended destination after Alonso blocked the ball. The ball clearly was going off target before it hit Caballero. In other words either Alonso blocked a shot that was going off target, ERGO NO ASSIST ACCORDING TO THE RULES, or he blocked the ball and significantly altered its destination, ERGO FPL TOWERS ARE WRONG IN THEIR EXPLANATION.

FPL also did a short article after a few GWs that can be found here: https://www.premierleague.com/news/511775

"Touches or deflections from an opponent before the rebound do not cancel out the assist, unless there is more than one that significantly changes the trajectory or power of the shot.

If an opponent makes a significant touch after the first initial block and before the goal is scored, no assist is awarded."

So clearly when Alonso blocks the shot that leads to it going wide, it does not matter how you interpret the rules. Either the trajectory was significantly altered, or the shot was going off target to begin.

My view is that there's no question that the ball rebounded off Caballero to Alli - the definition from opta was a touch not a save but that isn't relevant - I don't think we can call the Caballero anything other than a rebound. The ball hits him and goes into Alli's path. How do you define that action if not a rebound?

Also, where do the rules state that a shot has to be on target for a rebound to create an assist?

I know that used to be the case three seasons ago as I remember it applying to a Son shot ironically! However, I believe that was reviewed because it's just too ambiguous - when a shot comes in from range it's often impossible to judge on/off target and that takes things into a big grey area. I've checked and I can't see reference to shots having to be on target for rebounds to count.

I just quoted the full extent of the "REBOUND" section under "RULES". If you are unaware of that section, then I struggle to see why you put any effort into explaining FPL towers' decision.

It doesn't matter what you view as a rebound. The rules say that only a shot on target can count as a rebound, and that a rebound has to come from a block by a player or a save from the goalkeeper (or the post). The assists are given by OPTA, and OPTA claim that Caballero did not block nor save the ball. Ergo any assist from the rebound can only be given before Caballero touches the ball.

FPL towers have themselves released an article that claims that rebounds will not be given "If an opponent makes a significant touch after the first initial block and before the goal is scored, no assist is awarded.". OPTA claims that Alonso did indeed block the ball, and that the significant touch by Caballero should therefore stop the rebound.

In the process of defending their decision, FPL towers claim that Alonso's block did not significantly change the trajectory. That explanation could have a value, if the ball did not end up off target after the block. As the rules states a shot has to be on target for it to count as a rebound, FPL towers clearly are wrong in giving the assist regardless of whether their tweet is correct.

I'm aware of the rebounds rule quoted for the game and it's this....

"If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded."

No mention of the shot being on target but I get your point on the "save".

However, you're using Opta's definitions to define Caballero's touch. When the incident is reviewed, ISM are not defining Cabellero's action in the same way, they are just seeing the ball hit him before diverting to Alli and therefore it's a rebound. I'm not sure how they should define Caballero's touch for the sake of the above rule but there is no question that it was the bounce off him that took it to Alli. Personally, I don't really understand why it wasn't a save, the ball would have gone in were it not for the keeper.

I'm also aware of the article you mention and it also states this...

"Touches or deflections from an opponent before the rebound do not cancel out the assist, unless there is more than one that significantly changes the trajectory or power of the shot."

                https://www.premierleague.com/news/511775

Regardless of what Opta define the action from Alonso, ISM see it as a touch which is not significant enough to change the trajectory or power of the shot. Again, you're applying Opta definitions when ISM are just reviewing, seeing a deflection off Alonso and using their judgement on the significance of the touch. I don't think they take the Opta definition of Alonso's touch into consideration. Again for me, the definition of Alonso's touch as a block is a bit odd. He attempts to block, fails and it takes a slight deflection.

That was the decision upon review and re-review. You don't agree and that's fine but I don't think the decision goes against any stated rules. It comes down to whether you view the Alonso touch as significant - you do - they don't.

Anyway, I'm just trying to help with some insight into what goes into the decision. I'm sure we're not going to agree.I was more worried about the arrogant bit. I don't really understand that. I feel it's far worse if we're left hanging and in the dark on a decision.

I am from Norway. We have literal terminology for everything. Our terminology for "shot on target" is literally "shot on goal" (Skudd på mål). If the intention is not to mean the same thing, then you call it just a shot, not a shot on goal. When you say a shot is on target, you mean that the shot is on goal, because the goal is the target. Rules should be clear, and when you say shot on goal that is clear terminology for me. It's no different than saying shot on target.

I linked to the situation earlier. Watch the situation from 15 seconds in and tell me how the ball is moving from Alonso and on target. It doesn't do that at all. Caballero is completely caught out after making a save earlier.

If you think Caballero didn't make a save but still created a rebound, then we obviously need to discuss what a save actually is.

I don't think you can be 100% that the initial shot will not hit Caballero without Alonso's touch. That was ISM's view in the end.

After review, the assist for Spurs’ 3rd goal remains with SON. The first touch from a defender before the rebound off Caballero does not significantly change the trajectory or power of his shot before Alli scores

Best Manchester City trio to pick for DGW 37?
Someone who would start both matches?

Currently thinking Sterling, Sane and Walker
And triple captain either Sterling or Sane

No idea why so many who just WC'd don't have a way to get Kane back in 1FT. But if you did, would you do it for GW33 (for Auba)? Only chance to make a gain as everyone will have him in 34

All guesswork of course but I'd bet 6 points for Auba and 13 for Kane if I had to be that specific. Worth it if I cap Kane? Wouldn't cap Auba

Biggest lesson: If Kane is injured, and he's expected out a month, cut two or three weeks off that timeline.

If memory serves, last time he had an ankle injury, he did the same thing. Came back a couple weeks earlier than expected.
