A goal for a popular Man United asset proves vital for many, while Jamie Vardy’s fine form continues and Newcastle’s new-found defensive solidity keeps their survival bid on track.

Romelu Lukaku’s early goal in Man United’s 2-0 win over Swansea City helped ease the doubts of those brave enough to switch captaincy trains from Mohamed Salah to the Belgian.

The striker was the top transfer target of Gameweek 32, bought by 444,000+ and he was second only to the Liverpool phenomenon when it came to the armband, with 13.4% of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers hoping for a haul.

That they got, with a pair of bonus points taking Lukaku to eight points on the day – one better than the Egyptian.

Job done, then, and his fine form – four goals and two assists from his last six Gameweeks – bodes well with West Brom at home and Bournemouth away to come in Double Gameweek 34.

There is, of course, the small matter of a Manchester derby at the Etihad to come before that, but key United assets will at least turn up for City’s potential coronation in good nick.

Alexis Sanchez’s goal and assist equalled his output from his previous six Gameweeks since arriving at United, although only 2.8% enjoyed the 14 points (including maximum bonus) that he brought in.

Jesse Lingard was another to shine, building on his solid international form to produce an assist. He also out-shot the returning Paul Pogba four to one, with the Frenchman failing to register a single touch in the penalty area as his attacking threat continues to be compromised by Jose Mourinho’s tactical demands.

Interest in the 11.5-priced Sanchez and the out-of-sorts Pogba has been practically non-existent as managers have instead turned to United’s backline for the promise of points.

Chris Smalling was acquired by 76,000 – the most of any defender – and he started for the ninth successive Gameweek.

Victor Linedolf was his surprise partner at centre-half as Eric Bailly dropped to the bench, which was a blow to the 19,000+ who had brought him in for Gameweek 32.

The Ivorian has made way unexpectedly before, although the full 180 minutes on international duty could have been a major factor in Mourinho’s decision yesterday.

At least the ever-reliable David De Gea produced for his 44.2% ownership as United notched their 16th clean sheet of the season, albeit the first since Gameweek 26.

City away next is unlikely to deliver any more than save points, however, with interest in United players on hold until the first of two Double Gameweeks to come.

Having said that, Lukaku is currently the third most popular transfer target ahead of next weekend’s derby and enjoyed another price rise overnight.

Vardy shines, Murray melts

Five goals in his previous six Gameweeks persuaded 94,000+ managers to invest in Brighton striker Glenn Murray for the visit of Leicester City.

He was certainly a busy boy, firing in four shots on the day, but his second penalty miss of the season could yet prove crucial in the Seagulls’ quest for Premier League safety, and it burned his 7.0% ownership, who were left with a zero-point return.

On the plus side, it does at least keep Chris Hughton’s men highly motivated for their Double Gameweek 34 (cry TOT), with a huge home match against Huddersfield preceding that.

Defensive prospects remain minimal, however.

Some 66,000+ managers moved for one of Mat Ryan, Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy for Gameweek 32, but Brighton failed to keep a clean sheet for a tenth successive league match.

Jamie Vardy was partially responsible for that, adding Leicester’s second following Murray’s spot-kick miss to confirm the wisdom of the 222,000 who made him the Gameweek’s third most popular purchase.

Vardy has now scored in six of the last eight Gameweeks and currently tops the transfers-in table for next weekend with Newcastle the visitors to the King Power Stadium.

The 168,000 who made Riyad Mahrez Gameweek 32’s fifth most bought player suffered a rare blank, however.

Demarai Gray came on for Marc Albrighton and provided a late assist in an 11-minute cameo that pushed the claims of the 5.3-priced midfielder, while Vicente Iborra made it back-to-back goals having managed just one minute of action in the previous eight Gameweeks.

A first clean sheet in seven for the backline was good news for the 12.4% who have made Harry Maguire by far the Foxes’ most owned defender.

But he was overshadowed by Kasper Schmeichel, who delivered 15 points thanks to his second penalty save of the season, and by Ben Chilwell, whose assist and maximum bonus delivered his first double-digit return of the campaign.

Significantly, Maguire also picked up his ninth booking of the season and must now navigate past Gameweek 33 without a yellow card or he will miss both Leicester’s Double Gameweek fixtures. After Gameweek 33 – when teams have played 32 matches, the threshold for bookings shifts to 15 cards.

The visit from the Magpies, and Burnley (away) and Southampton at home in Double Gameweek 34, promise more clean sheet points to come, although the defence will have to do without the shield provided by Wilfred Ndidi.

The combative midfielder was sent off for two yellow cards yesterday and will miss the next two matches as it was his second dismissal of the season.

Magpies move on up

A third win in five Gameweeks edged Newcastle ever closer to Premier League safety as the Magpies saw off a spirited but limited Huddersfield 1-0.

Rafa’s Benitez’s renaissance men have relied on resilience at home to see them through – yesterday’s win was their third straight clean sheet in front of their own fans, and they’ve now conceded just two goals in their last six matches at St James’ Park.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (0.5%) is yet to concede in three home appearances, while fellow loan signing Kenedy (2.0%) continues to impress further up the pitch.

The Brazilian set up Ayoze Perez’s winner yesterday and now has two goals and as many assists from his seven starts since arriving from Chelsea.

Dwight Gayle’s 1.3% ownership endured a frustrating day, however.

The striker spurned two big chances to score on an afternoon when his Gameweek-leading six shots on goal produced only two points.

A Double Gameweek yet to be confirmed should keep Newcastle’s assets on our radars, although the immediate schedule (lei ARS) is not so promising.

As for Huddersfield, a four-match run of three defeats and a draw with no goals scored looks particularly ill-timed, with their next two fixtures (bha WAT) likely to prove crucial in their own bid for top-flight survival.

The Terriers may also have lost winger Elias Kachunga for another spell, with head coach David Wagner offering a pessimistic prognosis on his latest setback which saw him withdrawn on 55 minutes.

“He has an ankle injury that will keep him out for a few weeks now. It has already swollen; we will have to see”

What to do with United assets this week? Benching, selling or playing?

Think I'll play DDG and bench Valencia and Lukaku.

  4. Advantage GW33 Wildcarders?

So a big argument from the non-wildcarders last week was to wait for more info. So with only two games left this week what info has been gained so far by waiting?

Perhaps getting Kane straight in for GW33? Avoiding Saints defence? Maybe Smalling is just as safe (if not safer) than Bailly? Is some Man City still needed?

I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts as I was 99% certain wildcarding last week was the right approach. I have to be honest the RMTs I've seen so far have looked very similar to what wildcarders were doing last week. So apart from paying more for some players, what's changed?

Really depends on your team. I’m waiting to wc in 36 to BB in 37 but looks like you’ve outlined a few pros and cons for both wc 32 and 33 so you’ve answered your own question. Also I didn’t see that many price rises so team value should be one of the last reasons to wc

If you're wilcarding GW36 I think that's fair enough. I wasn't very clear I was thinking more about the people wildcarding this week. I do disagree with you on the price changes though. There were a number of top wildcard targets who went up by at least 0.1 - Lukaku, Auba, Vardy, Mkhi, Son, Willian, Mahrez. There were also some popular GW31 players who dropped. It all adds up.

Kane, Lingard, Smalling(still a risk imo) are the new options from this gw. Still think that's not worth the difference in cash they'll have to pay. Plus GW32 wc-ers will have two transfers for dgw 34 to cover all emerging options

Avoided Chelsea vs Spurs was the key reason for me not to WC, especially having 3 City. Everton goal was a let down, but still scored 14 pts from my 3 City players. If Willian and Son keep quiet today then holding on will be a success as the Mahrez, Willian, Son axis will have failed this GW.

The other key now is Auba(c) for me.

Disagree. Think it depends on how Son and Willian do today. Because the 'template' midfield is Son, Willian, Salah, Mahrez and Gross.

Gross and Mahrez flopped. Salah not really a differential. So if Son and Willian flop today then arguably those who didn't WC and kept holding of Sterling / Silva / Mane / KDB / Sane could win.

        1. Meinhoff
          • 13 Years

So you don't want neither Mahrez, Willian nor Son on your WC?

            • 9 Years

But I can get them in my GW33 WC. I have KDB, Sterling and Kenedy vs Mahrez, Willian and Son. So if Willian and Son flop then it will be a points victory in GW32 for me over the average Top 10k player. And I can still WC in the template for GW34 (i.e DDG, Ryan, Morgan, Robertson, Mahrez, Son, Willian etc.)

              • 13 Years
              7 years, 11 months ago

Yes, but the point is you will be having almost all the same players as gw32 wcers. The who wins debate is arbitrary, because not only Mahrez, Son and Willian are in gw32 wcs, but also Lukaku, Barnes, Vardy, Man Utd defs, Leicester defs. So my point is if you end up on the similar points as the average wc, the wc32 wins because you will have to pay more for pretty much the same players

I don't think I will have all the same players. I will have a Spurs defender, I will have Lingard (no Gross), I may have Kane. I already had Man U GK. I don't want Burnley. I accept I will have Leicester defenders. I may go Giroud instead of Vardy.

It was actually the people who went 'differential' on their WC that won. Vardy, Arnie and Lingard come to mind.

Yeah I agree with this. Mahrez and Gross failed for yesterday. My team was obviously in a different shape to some others though. Did you free hit in GW31? I was coming out of last week with the likes of Shaqiri and Walcott, certainly no Man City attack.

Nah - I have my FH still. I was happy only going into GW31 with 8 players (benching 3 City because I liked their Everton fixture in GW32). Still scored 91 pts in GW31 and if Willian and Son flop today then my plan of keeping City will have worked. Can ditch them in my WC now.

I don't think much advantage is gained in that actual wildcard teams. However, holding onto city assets etc and maybe avoiding spurs and Chelsea game could be an advantage for 33 wildcardless this week. It's just whether those points are worth missing all the price rises the 32 wildcardless caught.

I'm wildcarding this week. Things I've learned: Kane is available for Chelsea so he's deffo coming in for Stoke. Cedric and other Saints defenders are a no-go zone. Austin is back and got much needed minutes. Vardy instead of Firmino. More info after today's matches and potential injury news during the week too.

Price rises over the international break so very slow, so I can still get every player I was targeting. And currently on a green arrow this GW thanks to my GW31 'dross'.

      I'm glad I waited.

As mentioned above I do think those who have waited will have missed out on some significant price rises. You're right about the Kane return though - that has changed everything. It's gone from him being doubtful for DGW34 to now looking a sure starter for it.

This. Also got few answers like Barnes over Murray, also will go Lingard as 5th mid, Lloris as other keeper, keeping Auba as after yesterd game decided to sell Firmino. Also have a plan B to get Haz if he explode today and will think about geting Kane now (if he get sone minutrs today).
Sure that 5-6 players will stay the same as WC33 teams. Did you guys thought that waiting one more week means whole new team? Ofc not but those little diferentials make green or red arrows, not picks like Salah who is in everyones team.
Also lets wait for todays big game, UCL and pressers as many things still can change.

Origanally wild carded based around an assumption that next double would be the big one and not 37. I would wait until this week of I could do again, I got rid of a few Pool and City guys that really back fired on me.

It was the boredom of the international week that made me do it rather than a strong logic!

GW32 wildcarders had to pick a. team for the doubles and hope that the teams they were overlooking didn't run riot in 32.

That requires a bit of luck and, for the most part, paid off. A massive Liverpool victory yesterday with a load of points for players like Firmino, or a Callum Wilson hat-trick would have changed the landscape quite a lot.

I'm a 33 wildcarder, wc currently active, and I don't think I'm at an advantage over those who went early. But I could have been. My team this week was great on paper and it hasn't really delivered. That has more to do with luck than strategy.

Firmino was the let down yesterday especially as Vardy scored. Otherwise it probably would have been okay. For me it is between KDB, Sterling, Ibe and Kenedy (combined total of 20pts) vs Mahrez, Willian, Son and Gross. If Willian and Son stay quiet today then it will be a win for me not to WC in GW32.

I WCd in 32 and brought Kenedy in. Finished on 68 points with Auba(C). My team last week wouldn't have got anywhrere near that tbh and it had Stanislas in it too!
Happy I did WC in 32 with a plan to do Auba and Alonso to Kane and Smalling/Jones/Christensen/Robertson in 34 for free...

Wc32 epic gain for me. Caught the price rises, obtained a great score, got rid of gw31 dross, have the team I would have picked if I had wced this week and made sure I had enough money in the bank to get Kane back in gw34. My main rival didn’t wc and I have already gained 24 points on him this week with 4 players to go

Kane aside I'm not sure i'd change my GW32 WC side if i was WCing this week. Other possible exception would be Lingard for Gross but still happy to take the nailed starter for now. Nothing against Lingard more a question mark over Jose.
Avoided Utd defenders as plan was to decide GW34 with more info. Don't think anyone has learnt too much from yesterday. Jones closer to fitness maybe but what will the rotation be?
Comfortable with the bench players I've got in - Barnes/Chilwell/Vertonghen.
Big Arsenal win today and I could be well ahead - if not I maybe down 6/7 pts.
Happy to have Chelsea & Spurs this week as I reckon there will be goals.
Only player I've lost out on moving on is Mili but I've had great returns from him since beginning of Jan. Of course Ogbonna gets a CS how many are playing West Ham defenders.

Lukaku has gone up .3 auba .2 lots of others risen .1 but I think the key thing learned yesterday was that Sanchez could be a massive differential in gw34 and if I was wildcarding this week instead of last I'd be looking at him and Kane.

Got a decent score that I wouldn't have done otherwise if I'd not ditched the GW31 dross

Got some price rise...0.7m I think.

Still have the team I would have picked on WC this week, maybe apart from Willian who I might've reconsidered.

Had a Kane plan anyway to bring him in GW34...so bringing him in on a WC this week doesn't really make much difference (I hope!)

Still got all my nuts intact and yet to wild monkey. Those that wildcarded last week moved far too soon. Information is key at this stage.

The one player they all messed up with was The Pope. Still essential as ever.

And no...Heaton makes not a jot of difference.

    Pope / Elliot

    Christensen / Ogbonna / Fernandez / Otamendi / Mbemba

    Salah / Sane / Son / Mahrez / Hazard

    Firmino / Auba / Quaner

    Considering either (for DGW 34)

    A) Otamendi//Sane/Auba/Firmino > Chilwell/Lingard/Lukaku/Kane
    * over next 2 weeks and most likely triple captain Lukaku/Kane

So, Kane has been a troll as usual.

I was at least expecting him to wait for the Stoke game to return, but it seems like he'll get some minutes today, if not start and he'll definitely start vs. stoke.

Which means everyone on a game week 33 wild card will get him in their team which means his price will rise very soon.
Which means I will have to take a hit this week to get him since I have exact cash for Son/Auba to Kane/Gross.

We all know what he's capable when he's chasing the golden boot. I won't want to be the only guy who doesn't have him when he scores 7 goals.

Pardew, Moyes, Hughes, Lambert have had their chances in the PL IMO. Time for those guys to be thrown on the scrap heap along with past flops like Mick McCarthy, Iain Dowie, Ian Holloway, Steve Bruce, Neil Warnock and Chris Coleman.

Pulis deserves to be in the PL because of his record IMO. You don't have to like his style of football, but he gets results and that is what matters. Interesting how three former Pulis teams are close to being relegated (Stoke, WBA, Palace).

For those who didn't watch the United game yesterday it showed that they created 10 chances in the first half against Swansea. Jose said a few weeks ago that he is trying to make the team more attacking. If United keep this up that it obviously makes Lukaku a more interesting choice for the double game weeks especially with those fixtures.

I'm not really someone who brags and I realise that a lot of you guys are challenging top 10K finishes some even top 1K!

But in GW 17 my Or was ranked at 1.9 Mil and I was getting beaten badly in my work ML which is something I care about more than OR tbh.

Now at GW 32 with with an OR of 500K and still have TC/BB/FH to play. 47 points this week with Auba, Son, Willian and Mustafi to play. I cut 150+ lead down to 64 and I feel like I have the momentum to win my league as my rivals have blown their chips.

Guess what I'm trying to say is be patient, save your chips and try and find those early gems of players who end of being great differentials such as Robertson.

Having won my work ML comfortably the last 2 years this has definitely been the most challenging season but its been the most fun!

Well done man. Same for me, it's been an awful season. I tried to be different too many times earlier in the season and that cost me. I'm also playing catch up trying to win a ML of mine, not really bothered about OR this season. Hopefully the remainder of the season goes well for us and then next season will be better 🙂

        Thanks mate.

Getting my captaincy wrong really hurt. Went for Kane when Salah was hauling.

Last few weeks I have got it right and it has helped massively.

I would like to focus more on OR next season. Would probably help if I didn't casually take - 4 each week as a norm!

lol, don't even get me started on captaincy. My first brace from a captain this season was GW19 Salah. I captained Hazard and was fuming cause he was benched but he didn't come on so I got Salah's points. Been a rollercoaster season. Yeah same, I'll just play boring next season and take NO hits. Patience always seems to win on this game.

    For 34...
    A. Son and Kaku
    B. Lingard and Kane.

Son and Auba currently in their places.

I think I’m going with A. Will make my decision very late however.

Anyone else looking to pack their team with known Snus users for DGW34? Could be the difference between a 10k and 5k rank.

      Yep. Looking at:

      DDG - Ryan
      Vert - Rudiger - Robertson - Morgan - Lowton
      Salah - Lingard - Mahrez - Son - Willian
      Lukaku - Vardy - Barnes
