We’re now just one match from the Premier League title potentially being won, and that fact (or something in the water) seems to have released a maverick streak in at least one of our Scouts.

The ‘expert’ panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars Mark, Paul and Jonty and Career Hall of Fame dignitary Peter Kouwenberg have mostly gone for the usual suspects this weekend.

Mostly…

Jonty, in particular, seems to have scrunched up the template and lobbed it in the vague direction of the Fantasy bin.

How else to explain his decision to place this season’s points-sponge Mohamed Salah only fourth among his midfield selections?

After tonight’s injury scare at Anfield, it leaves us wondering if Jonty had some kind of premonition.

Nonetheless, it’s a big call, as is his placement of Wes Morgan above Chelsea’s defender-in-name-only Marcos Alonso in his backline picks.

Those two decisions alone should prompt bickering aplenty, relegating the Harry Kane first or second debate to a surprising best supporting role.

All will be revealed in the Scout Picks article later in the week, but for now, here are our panel’s selections and the reasons behind them for you to pick over at your leisure.

Paul Says…

Along with the host of usual suspects, backing Chelsea could be a good move this weekend.

Despite their downturn in form, Antonio Conte’s men have fired more shots (82) and efforts in the box (49) than any side in their last four home matches. Meanwhile, their visitors West Ham are ranked bottom for goals conceded (12) and big chances against (14) in their last four road trips.

With that in mind, Willian and Marcos Alonso get the nod in my squad.

They are ranked first and second for shots on goal for the Blues over the last four, with 13 and nine respectively, whereas Eden Hazard has mustered just three efforts by comparison.

I’m also doubling up on a pair of Watford players who were both among the points last weekend.

The Hornets have won three and drawn one of their four home matches under Javi Gracia, firing 65 attempts on goal – only three sides have managed more over the respective last four in front of their own fans.

Kiko Femenia profited from his out-of-position berth by netting against Bournemouth last time out, while Will Hughes supplied an assist.

When fit, Hughes has made an impact on the Watford attack.

He’s played a part in 50% of their goals when on the pitch, providing two goals and a pair of assists in his five starts. Indeed, with an average of 6.5 points per start, he can benefit from the visit of a Burnley defence with just a single clean sheet in ten attempts.

Peter Says…

Marko Arnautovic and Kiko Femenia came up trumps last time out, and only Glenn Murray’s spot-kick miss and an injury to Junior Stanislas really let me down in a week where the obvious candidates from Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United duly delivered.

Arnautovic and Femenia feature for me again as they continue to thrive in their out-of-position roles.

There are way too many doubts over City’s team selection and United’s approach to the Manchester derby to get involved there. For the record, I expect a strong City line-up and a 2-0 win to seal the title, but it’s definitely not worth the gamble.

In contrast, Mohamed Salah remains a shoo-in for Liverpool for the Merseyside derby, as long as doubts surrounding his Champions League injury scare are resolved. I’m disappointed not to be able to fit Andrew Robertson in too.

Arsenal’s home tie against Southampton and Spurs’ trip to Stoke are the big draws this weekend.

Granted, both the Saints and the Potters are fighting for their lives, but they have been on the receiving end of heavy defeats recently and face two of the top scoring sides in the division.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane will surely appear in every Scout selection this week, though there may be more debate over which supporting cast to include – Christian Eriksen, Petr Cech, Ben Davies and Shkodran Mustafi get my vote, despite slight rotation worries for the last two.

I struggled to decide which attacking Brighton and Leicester City players to choose, but the home form of Pascal Gross and Jamie Vardy’s metronome consistency gave them the nod over Murray and Riyad Mahrez.

That may come back to bite me, but I do see the quartet heavily involved as they entertain free-falling Huddersfield and a Newcastle defence which can’t seem to replicate its outstanding home form on the road.

Jonty Says…

Many of last weekend’s Wildcard template players faltered in Gameweek 32, most notably Brighton’s Gross, Chelsea’s Willian, Leicester’s Mahrez and Spurs’ Son Heung-min.

I’m backing all to bounce back in style this time around as they enjoy much-improved fixtures.

Gross should find Huddersfield more obliging visitors than last weekend’s Leicester, given that the Terriers have conceded in all of their last 13 away matches. The German’s 5.9 points average at the Amex Stadium also gives me hope.

Similarly, Mahrez should have more joy against a travelling Newcastle side that has shipped 14 big chances over their last six away days, conceding 10 goals along the way.

Son did at least earn an assist against Chelsea last weekend. With a trip to Stoke he should do far better, particularly as he netted a 16-point haul in the 5-1 reverse fixture.

Willian’s six shots on target over his last four home matches, which is top among Blues assets, also indicates the Brazilian will reward our faith should we select him.

Elsewhere, Aubameyang looks to be the best bet for goals against a woeful travelling Southampton side that conceded three against West Ham last weekend.

If money allows, I’d like to see him paired up front with Kane, who is back from injury and scored a brace in that hammering of Stoke earlier in the season. Son should be an able deputy for Kane if our budget becomes stretched.

Mark Says…

After backing Arnautovic in last week’s Squad and watching him reward my faith, I so wanted to find a spot for him this time around.

It’s not easy to murder my Austrian darling, but while I see him troubling the Chelsea defence, I just can’t back him over my selected midfield five.

Indeed, there are few shocks from me this week, with my only real attacking differential found in my choice of strikers. Josh King just edges Salomon Rondon as my maverick pick having supplied a goal or an assist in each of his last three starts.

In defence, I’m still standing by Harry Maguire. I’m all about shopping for that 15-point holy grail (clean sheet, goal, maximum bonus) and, for me, he remains among the top candidates to provide such a return before the season is out. Newcastle United at home could well be the date in question – the Magpies are another side who have proved vulnerable at set-pieces this season.

Elsewhere, I wonder if Femenia will get the nod this time. On our bench in Gameweek 32, he’s proved his worth with his 8-points and looks a prospect again for the visit of Burnley. The Clarets have form, but Watford are solid at Vicarage Road with just three conceded in their last four at home, picking up two clean sheets. I expect few goals in Saturday’s dead rubber.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 30 will be BigRedDog, who is in his seventh campaign and has finished inside the top 100,000 three times.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion, Bolleinho, beat the Scouts 81-74

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

    tark - davies - jones - robertson - alonso
    salah - son - willian - mahrez - mcarthur
    lukaku - firmino - barnes

is it ok for 2 DGW?
    can i play GW35 with 5-6 players?
my salah cost is 9.8, the actual cost is 10.7 i cannot cut him and rechoise in the future....
I need to choice some city player?maybe after the result of CL...

It's OK, as long as you are happy to go without Kane
You can play with 5-6 players, but i'd add a couple Arsenal/City before GW35 (they also have DGW37)
Wait for news on Salah, if its a long term injury you will have little choice but to cut him.
      Yes wait for CL.

Kind of hoping Salah misses the weekend game away at Everton but is back for the Bournemouth game. This weekend it would solve a problem of who not to play for me:

    Salah Mahrez Son Willian Gross
    Aubameyang Vardy Murray

It’ll also be interesting to see if rivals on wildcards decide to sell.

Think the best option for non wildcarders or those who wildcarded last week is to keep/bench Salah for this week unless Klopp says he’s out for a couple of weeks.

Why I say this is because:

    1. We’ll have more info on Salah’s injury.

    2. Players we are looking to get in might get injured this week.

    3. More options could emerge for the dgw. eg another Sanchez goal this week and he’s a top target.

    4. Most of us have Barnes (wat) on the bench for this week who is good enough to start this week.

    Thoughts?

Yup agreed. Those who wildcarded last week are in a safe position I’d say as all of them have someone decent on the bench to start.

Mostly is depends on the extent of his injury. If he’s back for BOU he’s a keeper imo.

    What do I do, guys?

    DDG, Ryan
    Alonso, Vertonghen, Morgan, Lowton, Dunk
    Salah*, Mahrez, Son*, Willian, Cork
    Auba(c*), Lukaku*, Barnes

I'm really worried that I have only Son as Spurs attacking cover.

    A. Son&Lukaku to Kane&JLingz (-4). Will get Lukaku back for 34. Don't like that idea too much since it means losing Son.
    B. Salah to Alli. Then Alli/Son to JLingz and Auba to Kane (-4)
    C. Same as B but with Eriksen instead of Alli
    D. Salah to someone up to 7.7 (who???) and Lukaku to Kane (-4). Next week Auba to Lukaku.
    E. Save. Play Lowton vs Watford and pray to God that Kane/Alli/Eriksenn do not go mental vs. Stoke

Overhyped? They lost one game. They are still going to score more premier league goals, win more premier league points and win the premier league by a bigger margin than any team has ever done before.

        More or less.

Other City managers have also won the PL title even though not so dominantly. IT's the CL break that was expected of him to get City to the next level.

This is so typical of him post-Barca. He dominates the league, wind the domestic title in early April but bottles it in the most important game(s) in CL. Same thing happened at Bayern three times in a row. He always experiments with the squad, trying to be too clever for his own good.

Maybe you don't quite see how dominant City are this season. Drawn 3 lost 1. Even Arsenal had 12 draws in the Invincible year.

The tie isn't over either, remember when Barcelona did PSG last year? Definitely wouldn't rule that out from happening again.

Of course people were over hyping them, but I think they've only fallen a slight notch from a previously near unassailable height.

Doesn't really matter. In the end' it just the PL title. Yeah, people will perhaps reminisce about this dominant team like they do for the Invincibles (though probably even less), but winning CL is a much bigger prize.

If Salah doesn't play in the second leg they have a slim chance, but that's all.

I'm surprised at how flippant you are about winning the PL. Especially with the most goals scored, with more points etc.

Are you that confident that a fired up City won't be able to score 3 goals against a porous Liverpool defence?

Neither will probably win the CL, but it really isn't over yet.

I planned to do in gw35 Lukaku+Son->Jesus+Arnie/Mkhi (that would give me 11 players in gw35) but things change with this Salah injury. I will keep him this week, but if injured long term then:

    Lukaku+Son+Salah->Firmino+Arnie/Mkhi+DeBruyne (-4) in gw35

    Yes or No? Thanks.

Can't imagine anyone TCing Lukaku. Need someone explosive to do it. Kane, Sanchez, Agüero, Aubameyang, Salah and Hazard are the only players I can really think of. And even then only if they're on form and have the fixtures. Maybe Mahrez as an outside option?

Lukaku averaging 8 points a week over last four weeks (including games against Liverpool and Chelsea). Would you be unhappy with a 16 point return from TC?

DDG could get that. I'd prefer a higher upside.

It's a balance, surely. Lukaku blanks fewer than one in three. Auba has blanked one in three from a very small sample; Hazard blanks more than every other game; Sanchez has blanked more than every other game since moving to United; Aguero shares minutes with Jesus and is injured and Salah doesn't have a double.

As far as I can see, the sensible move is Lukaku in GW34 or Kane in 37. Anything else is more of a gamble than would be worth it

I agree to a point, but I'd rather entrust someone who has previous in getting huge scores. Mourinho doesn't give Man U enough shots at goal for their players to rack up hauls, so would probably not pick any of their attackers. I think Vardy is pretty much on a par with Lukaku for goals a

Lukaku averages about half a point more per game, but I take your point. FWIW, I would definitely consider Vardy for TC if he was at home to WBA and away to Bournemouth in a DGW.

Yeah the fixtures are excellent and if it's gonna happen for Lukaku, it's gonna happen in 34. Be interesting to see, but I'd rather have 3 Man U defenders and captain Hazard. Hopefully he'll be thinking Salah is on his way to Madrid instead of himself and have a point to prove 😀

Partially agree, Kane last few weeks before injury were anything but "explosive" in terms of FPL (not saying he isn't, a back to back hattrick proves he can be the most explosive player am just saying he didn't do it for the last 8 GWs or so). TC on Hazard doesn't sound a good option either, too inconsistent.

Think I may TC Kane in the end come GW37

Lukaku - more nailed ahead of semis for both at the weekend and better fixtures (not saying Kane isn't a good option, just explaining why I believe Lukaku is a better one)

Kane. Why? Because it's Kane 🙂

Even if Lukaku's fixtures were easier and the good form he is in right now?

Spurs are much more attacking than this ManU side managed by Mou.

Also Kane is on a whole other level compared to Lukaku. He scores for fun. When he's chasing the golden boot the whole team plays for him, passes to him when they could score and so on.

Kane is much more likely to score 3-4 goals in a game than Lukaku.

If games were equivalent, I'd agree. But is Kane more likely to do that "WITH HIS FIXTURES"? In GW34, I would strongly argue the answer is no. However he may in GW37.

I am captaining Lukaku in 34 over Kane, but plan to use TC on Harry in GW37

Yeah, that's a good plan actually.

But let me tell you this. This year I'm never worried of Lukaku scoring many goals in a game. He's consistent, sure, but he is a 5-10 pointer per week.

With Kane, he could score 2-4 goals any game. Whenever rivals have him and I don't it's major couch-hiding time.

It's not ideal, not having Harry. But I would be surprised if Lukaku doesn't at least match Kane in GW34. Isn't that what choosing a captain comes down to? Who would you back to score most points? Kane could get plenty, but I would back Lukaku to return both games.

Editor's note - I had the same feeling this week with Lukaku and Auba. Even said that I fully expect Lukaku to score one but that if Auba scores one then he will score two. I went with the more sure points and can't be unhappy with the return
