Scout Notes – Kane Denied On His Return

An early return to the starting line-up for Harry Kane ends in a goal, and then doesn’t, while wholesale changes to the Liverpool line-up contribute to one of the most forgettable Merseyside derbies of recent seasons.

Spurs striker Kane was the most signed player of Gameweek 33, with 327,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers returning him to the fold after his Gameweek 30 injury.

Another 933,000 early adopters, including 21 of the top 100 managers, also handed him the captaincy, weighing up the risk that he might not start with the reward that a match against Stoke City generally promises.

The risk proved unfounded, but so, eventually, did the reward.

Kane was initially awarded a goal, from Christian Eriksen’s free-kick, before the Premier League Match Centre adjudged the striker failed to make a touch the ball on its way past Jack Butland. This despite the striker’s own post-match claims that it had brushed his shoulder.

That meant that Eriksen ended with a brace and maximum bonus for a season-high 15 points, a haul that a modest 64,000+ new owners enjoyed. As a result, the Dane is currently second only to Kane for Gameweek 34 transfers-in.

Eriksen now has a goal or an assist in four of his last five matches – fine form heading into a Double Gameweek 34 involving matches at home to Man City and away at Brighton. As Spurs midfield assets go, Eriksen would seem the most protected from rotation over those two outings.

Kane Subdued Ahead of Double

The woe for Kane’s burgeoning ownership increased further with a late yellow card that meant he returned just a single point from his team’s 2-1 win.

The striker resisted a price rise overnight but is still the top transfer target, attracting 23,000 new owners so far.

However, his performance at the bet365 was somewhat subdued as he mustered just two off-target shots and four touches in the penalty area.

If those previously contemplating Romelu Lukaku for Double Gameweek 34 were looking to be convinced, Kane failed to present too much evidence to persuade a change in tack. That said, Lukaku’s own 1-point display at Manchester City was perhaps even more disappointing.

Indeed, United’s result at City could reflect on Kane’s prospects given that Pep Guardiola’s side now visit Wembley Stadium with the title still not confirmed.

Fantasy managers can point to City’s recent obliging defensive performances – six goals in the last two in all competitions – or the fact that they will now perhaps provide more stubborn and determined opponents for Kane and Spurs.

Regardless, the script has changed and now we must consider Kane’s prospects against a very different backdrop.

Son returns to the flank

Kane’s inclusion also had an impact on Son Heung-min (18.4%), the second most bought midfielder of the Gameweek, who returned to his berth on the left flank after deputising as Spurs’ lone striker at Bournemouth.

Erik Lamela went back to the bench as a result, only to replace the South Korean late on as he blanked for the first time in four Gameweeks.

Son’s two-points prompted an immediate reaction from FPL managers, he is currently placed sixth for transfers-out so far.

With his minutes now threatened by Lamela, we must question whether Son is assured in both the Gameweek 34 fixtures. A Lamela start at Brighton four days before the FA Cup semi-final with Man United looks a very possible scenario.

There has been rather more positivity regarding Dele Alli, who followed up his double against Chelsea with an assist at Stoke for his 141,186 new owners.

The England international now has three goals and as many assists from the last four Gameweeks, and he’s second only to Kevin De Bruyne for assists, with 13 to the Belgian’s 17, this season.

At the back, having kept three straight clean sheets from Gameweeks 27-29, Spurs are now three without a shut-out.

Then again, Ben Davies – the second most popular defender in the game with 23% ownership – wasn’t even on the pitch as he and Kieran Tripper were rotated out at full-back by coach Mauricio Pochettino, with the Welshman’s replacement, Danny Rose, providing an assist.

That rotation will surely continue over the two Gameweek 34 matches, with Jan Vertonghen the most likely member of the back four assured of both starts.

For Stoke, Xherdan Shaqiri punished the 80,000 managers who made him the sixth most sold player of Gameweek 33 by picking up his seventh assist of the season.

It could have been even worse for those sellers as the Swiss international also hit the post as Stoke strove in vain for an equaliser.

Mame Diouf earned the Potters’ consolation, capitalising on a Hugo Lloris error following Shaqiri’s through-ball.

Derby day dullness

The lack of key Liverpool assets led to a lack of major incident in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, with the resultant 0-0 draw producing the only clean sheet points of the day.

The Reds’ Champions League quarter-final second leg with Man City on Tuesday prompted coach Jurgen Klopp to rest, or not risk, his main attacking weapons.

Roberto Firmino was benched and Mohamed Salah given the day off, which was no great surprise for FPL managers, with 210,000+ selling the former and 302,000+ the latter, making FPL’s top two owned players also the top two most sold of Gameweek 33.

The third member of Liverpool’s exalted attacking trio, Sadio Mane, did start but failed to return for the first time in five Gameweeks, having produced three goals and three assists over that period.

Robertson Misses Out

The derby stalemate made it five clean sheets in nine for Liverpool, but Virgil van Dijk was the only first-choice member of the back four to start and take advantage as Klopp made five changes in all, with Andrew Robertson another to miss out.

A calf problem put paid to the left-back who, like Salah, goes into Tuesday’s Champions League tie as an early doubt.

Robertson was brought in by 61,000+ managers ahead of Gameweek 32, making him the third-most bought defender last time out. He was also Liverpool’s most popular signing before this weekend’s deadline, with a further 51,000 bringing him in.

Ragnar Klavan replaced Robertson, with Alberto Moreno dropping out of the squad late on with a thigh problem.

It was only Everton’s second clean sheet in 13 Gamweeks as goalkeeper Jordan Pickford claimed his third set of maximum bonus points this season.

He had gained 11 bonus points in seven matches between Gameweeks 14 and 20, making his derby day haul his first extra award in 13 starts.

I am now undecided on whether to get Lukaku in for a -4 (my original plan) or to take a -8 to get Sanchez in and captain him in GW34. I am BB in 34, FH in 35 and TC in 37. Any opinions on which of these please.

    A) Auba and Alonso > Lukaku and Vertonghen/Christensen (-4)
    B) Auba + Alonso + Mahrez > Vardy + Vertonghen/Christensen + Sanchez (-8)
    C) Auba + Murray + Mahrez > Vardy + Barnes + Sanchez (-8)

    Team for GW34 at present:

    DDG
    Alonso, Morgan, Lowton, Yoshida
    Mahrez, Willian, Lingard
    Kane, Auba, Murray

    Bench: Hennessey, Salah, Mili, Mustafi

You have a lot of SGW players to be BB in 34. Maybe just TC Kane, FH in 35 and BB in 37?

it still can give points... the point of BB is to play your dgw player without worry about benching your best sgw players

Thanks PC, it did cross my mind but I will have 11 DGWrs and 4 SGWrs in both GW34 and 37 but the SGWrs have better fixtures in 34 hence why I am BB then. Also Kane has better fixtures in 37 for TC.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Gameweek 33 Lessons Learned So Far…

With the Double Gameweek 34 in mind, what lessons have you learned from Gameweek 33 so far.

Here’s a few to get the discussion started:

The Captaincy Conundrum is less clear.

Lukaku has the fixtures, but as we saw yesterday he can go missing at times in games. This may put some off handing him the armband, in spite of his kind fixtures (WBA, bou). Will those that captain him end GWK 34 in good spirits or regretting that move?

Mahrez is another popular captaincy target with good fixtures (bur, SOU). But he has now blanked in his last two – both matches against ‘easy’ opposition. Did he do enough yesterday to convince his backers?

Could Kane be the man to trust? Yesterday showed that his desire to grab the golden boot is stronger than ever – even trying to claim a goal that the Premier League believes belongs to Eriksen. That hunger may well give him the edge, in spite of only one kind fixture (MCI, bri).

Manchester United options became more intriguing.

Sanchez may well be not only the best Manchester United option but also GWK 34’s best captaincy candidate. He now has two double digit hauls in a row, with a goal, three assists and five bonus points – that is the kind of form that may well even deserve a triple captaincy chip.

    Where now for the Salah-less?

Jurgen Klopp indicated that Salah should be ready to face Manchester City, which means a start against Bournemouth next weekend looks highly likely.

    https://twitter.com/BenDinnery/status/982569491954655232

Given The Egyptian scored 29 pts in his last home run out in the league those without face a tough choice on whether to continue to shun FPL’s best player this season (and possibly of any season).

No one should have expected anything from Lukaku against a top 4 team and I believe he will return more than Kane in GW 34. Kane looked so slow and far from his best form

Kane captain for me. Spurs in great form and unbeaten in 2018. Hungry for goals and unlucky not to get a goal yesterday. Another week of training and he'll be ready.

Tempted to take an 8 point hit to squeeze Sanchez in as well as he finally looks sharp for United

Yep, that's my thought. His desperation to get that goal awarded to him showed that he could be the hungriest. City's defence showed they can be breached. Brighton will be easy prey. Also it often takes him a game to get going.

Between him and Lukaku for me. For all Lukaku's toils yesterday he has proved through his career that he can punish minnows.

Lessons learned - don’t sit on 10.5 of injured player because of losing value if you sell ... same lesson as in GW22 ... points over team value 🙂

If I'd have sold him I'd have got Alli and be 6 pts better off, can live without that.

Crucially I'd also be without FPL's best player for BOU and he would cost me around 0.6-0.8 more to get in on a free hit in GWK 35 - money that could be vital to afford the best team possible that week.

As we have seen before - ditching Salah because he'll miss one game can be very unpleasant indeed when he's back and firing.

You have built up your team value to 105.2 which is higher than many on here and you have even already Wild Carded, time to be ruthless and cash some of it in to get points rather than red arrows ... you can’t take it with you 😉

This - he could even break down in the City game ... holding a 10m injured player when the team was leaked hours before this game week, (with great alternatives going in to a double game week anyway) and you can get him back on a FH in 35 anyway seems bizarre in the extreme 🙂

Could have, would have, should have.

Salah's replacement *could* blank 2 out of 3 weeks, and not play the third.
Salah *could play and score 4 goals vs Bournemouth.

Its not as cut and dry as some are making out imo.

It’s just a bit of luck after all, but swapping Salah’s one game maximum for 3 games maximum of Sánchez, Alli, Eriksen etc (2 games at worst) seemed like a sensible way to make the luck work for you, rather than sitting on .5 of team value 😉

Why would he miss GW34 when he clearly didn’t have a serious injury - he ran on to celebrate with his teammates vs City. Klopp has said he’ll play against City. He has played every game bar one up until yesterday and that they couldn’t be break down such a weak team suggests how important he is.

If Salah is fit he will play. If he isn't he won't. We'll know more next week. If he's a doubt then I will have a tough choice to make. But Klopp indicated he'll be back v City.

He is being sold like hot cakes and may double drop this week as the masses wake up to the knowledge of the double gameweek ... we have no idea if he will be started next week and it is certainly not ‘highly likely’ with Klopp’s track record .... when all is said and done, its still one Salah game versus two for Hazard, Eriksen, Alexis etc in 34 anyway 🙂

Any Salah seller that got in Sanchez or Eriksen will have already done really well.

Those who got in Alli less so...especially as making that move may mean taking a hit GWK 34 to get in Kane.

I really don’t agree Hotdogs. People are constantly told not to judge a WC on 1 GW and this is the same. I’ve owned Salah since he was 9 and you’re implicitly saying that he’ll do nothing for the rest of the season because once he’s gone, it’s very difficult to get him back without serious team surgery. I don’t know who I would have brought in but I had a strong bench. And it was obvious to anybody with half a brain (which rules out some posters I saw claiming Salah could be out for “weeks”) that he didn’t have a serious knock and was being saved so that he was going to be around for the rest of the season and clearly hungry for the golden boot too. I really don’t think Alli is going to outscore Salah for the rest of the season. And what did he get yesterday? An assist?

I sold for Eriksen, may buy him back for 34, certainly will for 35. That is 3 Eriksen games v 1 Salah game if I get him back in 35 ... makes a lot is sense maybe rather than sitting on a bit of team value ?

Mahrez seems like a hold, hope they play Okazaki from the start against BUR
Kane isn’t back to full speed yet
Sanchez is interesting but probably will pass
Held Salah, don’t see a reason to drop now

Got my FH this week so want to go crazy on DGW players to make up a big gap in my league, but been caught out by this before when loads get rested. Yesterday didn't help matters.

Lukaku had a stinker but his record against West Brom and Bournemouth is amazing. Sanchez looked good but was also playing wide and deep.

Leicester have but the beach. Burnley haven't and have two home games but I can't be sure if I trust them.

Tempted to get Alli, Erikssen and Kane as I feel those 3 will play the majority of the two weeks.

The somewhat forgotten midfield heavy-hitters are making a comeback: Sanchez, Pogba, Spurs mids. Suddenly the WC32 midfield template of Salah, Willian, Mahrez and Son looks a bit dated and out of form, esp if Willian blanks today.

I sold Salah for Hazard, also have Willian and Chrisyensen so hoping for a big Chelsea win.

Just remarking how quickly things change in FPL. Suddenly lots will be contemplating taking in Pogba, Sanchez, etc.

Im happy to hold my guys and hope its their turn for points next week.

Booted Salah for Alli last week on wc and very happy. Salah won't play v BOU if Liverpud make it past Citeh in CL. Klopp will just rotate like last season with Coutinho.

Sanchez looks really tempting now on a dgw and might Smalling be worth investment now?

Ditched Salah for Erik and gave him the armband. Massive punt but all of my moves are based around chasing in my ML, I am trying too either win or finish last. Going out in a blaze of glory.

When choosing which Spurs mid I simply boiled it down to Erik being the best player. Paid off yesterday along with bringing in Sanchez last week on WC.

Sanchez triple (C) DGW 34 for me.

      30: Son 32: Alli 33: Erik

City have conceded 6 goals in the last 2 games agaisnt teams who have got into them (well in the second half on Sat) Spurs are also very good at doing this, not sure it's that difficult a fixture for Spurs and when you consider they've beaten Dortmund, Madrid, Arsenal, United & Liverpool at Wembley, Kane could get some joy in that game to set up the Brighton one.

Been looking at Liverpool's upcoming fixture run, think now could be the time to get off Salah.

      14/4 Bournmouth H
      22/4 WBA A
      24/25/4 Semi Final 1st leg
      28/4 Stoke H
      1/2/5 Semi Final 2nd leg
      6/ 5Chelsea A
      13/5 Brighton H
      26/5 Possible Final

Don't see him playing against WBA or Stoke (when we want him to) & it's unlikely you'll C him against Bournmouth in a double week.

One major takeaway from this week, Chelsea inability to win at the weekend means the top 4 is as good as a closed shop, means United, Spurs & Chelsea have very good reason to rotate heavily in the second game of the double next week so they have a fresh team for the Semi, they'll all want to end the season with something to show for it no doubt.

Very unsure on what to do. BB or TC this gw.

    DDG
    Davies, Maguire, Lowton
    Alli, Mahrez, Willian, Arnie
    Auba, Vardy, Firmino

Hennessy, VVD, Baines, Gundogan 1ft 1.7 itb

Likely doing Baines or Gundo and Firmino to 4.7d/4.5m and Lukaku.

Tricky in mid, I am selling Mane & Sterling but without selling Salah I'm 0.1m short of those selected? Might go all in and get Willian too but this will leave 2m odd ITB but 0.2m short of Lukaku instead of Vardy!

    DDG
    Alonso Vertonghen Maguire
    SALAH Alli Mahrez Gross
    Kane(c) Vardy Barnes

      Kane Vardy Barnes

I'd go cheaper if an enabler. Swa if BB in GWK 37. Bournemouth perhaps or Leic if GWK 34.

March is a great player for Brighton but its not a great Double for the Seagulls and March is prone to rotation.

Points spread. Sanchez has proved me wrong (I was a doubter) with his array of points from assists, goals and bonus - two double digit returns in a row is very persuasive.

I like Lukaku alot too - but in terms of captaincy I think the guy who gets more points from more things could be the one.

I'm getting him in my Sky side - which is doing far better than my FPL side.

Prefer the top team, personally. I'd consider Pogba as a potential differential. If he found his mojo in the second half yesterday, he could be big over the coming weeks.

How do these look for a -8?

Maguire > Christensen. Had enough of no cleanies

Sane > Pogba. No double and away at spurs

Mounie > Barnes. No explanation needed

Lingard isn't nailed - can see him being rested for one of the two games in DGW 34. Same with Son at Spurs, Willian at Chelsea and Morata at Chelsea. Rashford, Lamela, Pedro and Giroud all waiting in the wings to replace them.

100% correct. Willian is the one who worries me the most.

Is getting Pogba now points chasing or can he genuienly be a source of attacking returns in next two ?
Question to those who have enough will power to watch United.

A lot hinges on how Utd play IMO. If they showed the hussle, desire and attacking intent that they did in the second half yesterday, against WBA and Bournemouth then they could get a lot of points.

If Mourinho wasn't their manager and they had someone like Ancelotti I would have a lot more faith that Utd would destroy some of these weaker teams.

I think the next few games could he similar to the start of the season in that he and Lukaku could become the flat track bullies like they were at the beginning of the season. I want to get him in but there is always that worry that he will just revert to mid season stroll around the pitch

I feel like with the fixtures they have I ought to have one of their attacking players but due to limited funds I cant go for Kaku or Sanchez.

Anyway cheers for opinions will think about it all week and then make drunken decision friday night.

Herrera plays, Pogba attacks and he usally does good then. Depends on what Mou decides.

big decision this week, can afford to wait until the weekend:

    A Salah + lukaku(Tc)
    B Auba + sanchez(Tc)

have been planning the top move since gw32 but B Is tempting. depends a lot on Tuesday night and anything Klopp says + how good/bad I feel after the results today

I've gone Kane for Aubameyang. It hurt taking Auba out but I'll bring him back for my FH in GW35. I replaced Son with Milvijovic to get the money. Seriously considering Willian to Pogba for a 4pt hit too...
