Scout Notes – Chelsea Fail to Convince

A derby draw with West Ham leaves Chelsea ever further from Champions League qualification and their key assets increasingly unattractive for the run-in.

Floating the idea of having little or no Chelsea coverage for the side’s two Double Gameweeks still to come would have probably had you put in the Fantasy stocks not so long ago.

But yesterday’s 1-1 draw was further evidence of a side full of expensive talent not living up to their Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price tags and with the FA Cup as their only realistic chance of salvaging something from an increasingly forgettable season.

The Blues dominated possession and out-shot their London rivals by 23 efforts to five, but only had Cesar Azpilicueta’s goal, from an Alvaro Morata assist, to show for their supremacy before Marko Arnautovic set up Chicharito to nick an equaliser.

That leaves Antonio Conte’s side ten points from fourth place with just six matches to go, and the coach could be excused for prioritising the FA Cup now, despite a gloomy Azpilicueta’s post-match analysis.

“We will try to win it, but the cup will not save our season.”

The reliable Spaniard’s goal and maximum bonus brought in 11 points for his 20.1% ownership and took him past team-mate Marcos Alonso (19.7%) to the top of FPL’s defenders’ table.

But the Blues backline has now kept just one clean sheet in eight matches, which is slim pickings for their generally inflated price tags, particularly as Alonso’s attacking output has also dried up – he last produced goal or assist returns back in Gameweek 22.

As outlined in Ragabolly’s Metrics article at the weekend, Alonso was the Chelsea Wildcard template defender in Gameweek 32 among managers in the top 100,000, whereas it was Andreas Christensen among those who employed the chip a week later.

Alonso produced two points yesterday, Christensen none at all as he was benched after five straight league starts.

The Dane’s 5.3 price remains attractive – he’s 1.9 cheaper than Alonso – but it counts for nothing without guaranteed pitch-time as Chelsea prepare for Double Gameweeks 34 (sot bur) and 37 (LIV HUD).

The prospects aren’t much rosier further up the pitch.

Eden Hazard is another doing little to justify a premium price tag, in his case 10.7.

The Belgian now has only one assist in five Gameweeks, leaving Willian (7.2) as the value pick – he’s netted twice over the same period and has now started five straight league matches for the first time this term.

The Brazilian was busy against the Hammers, with five shots and six key passes, and is the fourth best midfielder for shots (18) and efforts on target (nine) over Gameweeks 28-32, despite having no Gameweek 31 fixture. Willian remains the most popular Chelsea asset with just under 20,000 transfers in ahead of Gameweek 34.

Alvaro Morata (10.4) started ahead of Olivier Giroud up front again and followed up back-to-back goals in all competitions with an assist yesterday.

That marks the 7.9%-owned striker out as a potential differential for the doubles, although he will surely struggle to displace Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy if he is to make our frontlines for the run-in.

With their second Gameweek fixture at Burnley on Thursday – just three days before Sunday’s semi-final vs Southampton, Conte will be expected to rotate at Turf Moor. The changes could even be extensive should the gap to Spurs in fourth remain or widen before facing the Clarets.

Hazard will surely be one player that Conte considers protecting, with Pedro the likely benefactor. But a rest for the Belgian could well protect Willian’s start, reinforcing his current popularity.

Elsewhere, Chelsea’s teamsheet at Burnley could be very difficult to predict. Factor in the team’s poor form – they’ve won just once in four Gameweeks – and their defensive fragility and their players’ Fantasy prospects are currently the wrong side of underwhelming.

Marko remains the man

Investment in Chelsea players might look fraught, but it still appears wiser than putting your faith in West Ham’s options.

The Hammers’ run-in (STK ars MCI lei MUN EVE) is ugly and their form patchy, with two wins and a draw in their last six matches offset by three thumping defeats.

But there is often an exception to the rule, and in this case, it’s Marko Arnautovic.

The midfielder has thrived in an out-of-position role up front, with his assist yesterday taking him to six goals and five assists from his last ten Gameweek appearances.

He’s owned by only 4.9% and remains a significant differential prospect with a home match against Stoke City up next, even if that fixture is the Hammers’ only match in what is a Double Gameweek for many.

West Ham also have a match in Gameweek 35’s reduced slate against an Arsenal side with Europe on their mind and with a defence that’s just conceded two goals to shot-shy Southampton.

He might struggle to maintain his fine form in Double Gameweek 37’s trip to Leicester City and a visit from Man United, but those who already own the Austrian international will be excused for keeping faith in a player who has served them so well since the turn of the year.

He scored v both teams this season already. 5 + 8 points.

                It’s a combined haul. I’d say he’ll score 16points this week.

Lukaku was the main man for Everton and everything went through him, but there is no way the Utd players will tee him up for goals with an open net for themselves to score ... Spurs players will do this for Kane, except that greedy little Son 😉

1.7m itb and my current defenders are...

    Alosno, Morgan, Lowton, Mustafi*, Dummet*

I'm playing BB this week and FH next and looking to upgrade Mustafi/Dummet to a DGW defender (Can't be Man U). Any opinions on these?

    a) Mustafi > Vert
    b) Dummet > Davies (Rose worries me)
    c) Dummet > Christiansen
    d) Dummet > Chilwell

I think I'd like to keep Mustafi particularly with GW37

Very confused about the FH chip in GW 35.

I have BB which i am planning to use this GW34, GW35 i have very few players (about 6).

I presume the FH is to get players in for GW35? But also get in players for the 36/37 doubles as well?

Right, done some digging on the golden boot thing since it seems to come up quite often at the moment and people are selling it as a major factor in Kane/Salah being strongly motivated currently.

If you don't want to read this entire wall of text (and you really, really shouldn't) then I suggest you just ignore it, recognise I am a golden boot motivation skeptic and write either "tl;dr" or "yeah but Kane went mad last season and won me my minileague so it's obviously the golden boot thing and it's nailed on to happen again".

I've basically just checked the final 6 games of golden boot contenders of seasons gone by and noted how many goals they managed in those matches. I should point out that the 'six games to go' position only includes the players that ended up winning/almost winning the contest. There could have been some players in contention that fell away, I didn't bother to check 🙂

    2016/17
    ----------
    With six Games to go:
    1. Lukaku - 23
    2. Kane - 20
    3. Sanchez - 19

    Lukaku's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1
    Kane's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 0, 1, 0, 1, 4, 3
    Sanchez's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 1

    Final totals:
    1. Kane - 29
    2. Lukaku - 25
    3. Sanchez - 24

    What 'conclusions' can we draw?

    * Kane was desperate for the golden boot and this extra motivation (which only kicked in with a couple of games to play apparently) made him a more prolific goalscorer?
    * Lukaku didn't care about the golden boot so didn't bother trying to score any goals?
    * Lukaku cared as much as Kane but didn't magically score goals as a result?
    * Sanchez cared about it a bit; more than Lukaku but not as much as Kane?

All very confusing. Lets go back further...

    2015/16
    ----------
    With six Games to go:
    1. Kane - 22
    2. Aguero - 18

    Kane's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 0, 2, 0, 1, 0, 0 (blanks against MUN, WBA, SOT, new)
    Aguero's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 3, 1, 1, Benched, 1, 0

    Final totals:
    1. Kane - 25
    2. Aguero - 24

    'Conclusions'

    * Kane didn't care about the golden boot so put his feet up at the end of the season?
    * Kane knew Aguero wouldn't score much in the last few so stopped trying?
    * Kane was desperate for the golden boot but it didn't actually make him a better goalscorer?
    * Aguero was desperate for the golden boot but just ran out of steam?

    2014/15
    ----------
    With six Games to go:
    1. Kane - 20
    2. Aguero - 19

    Kane's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1 (blanks against sot, MCI, sto, HUL)
    Aguero's goalscoring in the last 6 games: 1, 1, 1, 3, 0, 1

    Final totals:
    1. Aguero - 26
    2. Kane - 22

    'Conclusions'

    * Kane didn't care about the golden boot so put his feet up at the end of the season?
    * Kane thought Aguero wouldn't score much in the last few so stopped trying?
    * Kane was desperate for the golden boot but it didn't actually make him a better goalscorer?
    * Aguero was desperate for the golden boot and it gave him special sharpshooting powers?

    Etc.

I've gone back 10 years and it's all similarly topsy turvy but basically Kane's last 2 games last season were unprecedented:

    Suarez 13/14 - 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0
    Sturridge 13/14 - 0, 0, Not in squad, 0, 1, 1
    van Persie 12/13 - 1, 3, 1, 0, 0, 1
    Suarez 12/13 - 0, 1, Banned, Banned, Banned, Banned
    van Persie 11/12 - 1, 0, 0, 1, 2, 0
    Rooney 11/12 - 0, 2, 2, 0, 0, 1
Berbatov 10/11 - Not in squad, Not in squad, 0, Benched, 0, 0
Tevez 10/11 - Not in squad, Not in squad, Not in squad, 0, 2, 0
    van Persie 10/11 - 1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 1
    Drogba 09/10 - 1, 0, 0, 0, 1, 3
    Rooney 09/10 - Injured, Injured, 0, Not in squad, 0, 0
    Anelka 08/09 - 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1
    Ronaldo 08/09 - 2, Benched, 1, 0, 0, Not in squad
    Ronaldo 07/08 - 1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 1
    Torres 07/08 - 0, 1, Benched, Not in squad, 1, 1
    Adebayor 07/08 - 0, 1, 1, 3, 0, 0

Actual conclusion - form and fixtures are what determine goalscoring at the end of the season. If a chase for the golden boot is a factor it's not obvious. Strikers at the top clubs are pretty motivated to score goals throughout the season and so Kane/Salah/Lukaku/Aguero etc. are all good picks 🙂

Arguably the best? Please pass whatever you are smoking. He barely makes the top 10 in FourFourTwo's latest rankings: https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/ranked-10-best-forwards-strikers-world
Messi, CR, Suarez, Lewa, Higuain, Cavani, Neymar, Kun, Auba all have superior track records. I'd have Icardi and Griezmann over him and Dybala, Jesus and Firmino are right around there b/c it's not just goals that matter.

Let's wait to see how he does at the World Cup maybe before making such optimistic pronouncements he was absolute pants at the Euros.

Sure thing Rafa. They most definitely are strikers they predominantly play as the most advanced central player. Are Jesus and Firmino strikers? They play the same position just like Messi, CR and Neymar.

The 9 strikers I listed all have better track records than Kane and Icardi just as many goals this year.

Kane was rubbish at the Euros against the best it's absurd claiming he's the best striker in the world. If he smashes it at the WC then you have a better argument.

I'll repost my answer to your previous post:

Think it is a factor, but at the same time it is being overhyped.

The most important thing to the teams and the players are to win the matches, claiming second, third or fourth in the league. Moving on in the CL and so on.

As we saw in the weekend Alli did not try the tricky pass to Kane. Instead he waited for Eriksen to come from behind. If they were all instructed in targeting the golden boot for Kane, then he would have made that pass through the box.

Salah, Firmino, TAA, Robertson and Chamberlain gets rested. Obviously CL is more important than Salah potentially winning the golden boot. More rest will come if they knockout City in the midweek. Not like he will get risked/play more matches just to have a higher chance of winning the golden boot if they have to play Madrid in the semi finals. No freakin way.

I'll get Salah and Kane back at some point, but not due to the golden boot. Simply because they are awesome players.

Just read that on the old article and was going to reference it here so thanks for saving me the bother! 🙂

I think you make excellent points and agree entirely - the reason to own these players is the class/form they've shown already, the golden boot thing is trivial in comparison to all of the other factors.

Yes, and I am not going to get 'spooked' into buying Kane before MCI and bri just because he can still win the golden boot. Let's talk class/form! Eriksen & Alli outshines Kane & Son at the moment. I feel save going into the DGW with Lloris.

Neither Kane nor Salah is captain material next GW anyway. Ofcause you can always (C) Kane, but I am looking to TC Sanchez.

Tbh. I think Man U will keep as many CS's as Kane will score goals in the next GW. Would rather do a -4 doing Ota + Moses -> Smalling + Valencia than a crazy -8 or 12 to get Kane in instead of Aubameyang.

          Team will most likely be:

          Lloris
          Valencia - Smalling - Simpson
Sanchez (TC) - Alli - Eriksen - Gross
          Vardy - Auba - Wood

im not saying you're totally wrong, but i wouldn't say you can class eriksen and alli as the ones in form just because of there assist and goals at the weekend, son missed 2 x 1v1's and if he had put them away maybe eriksen wouldve never scored and we would be having a different convo.

You cannot afford to be fickle in this game, son could easily score more points then eriksen in gw34 the same as alli could outscore kane, we just don't know ...when it comes to these type of things its mainly down to luck (where ball lands on the day, who finishes who doesn't)

we just have our hunches and we need to go with them i guess

This. 1000x this! There's a reason they are going for the golden boot; they have scored a lot of goals!

I am less concerned about Salah's minutes, as he is clearly a guy who wants to be on the park (even over Christmas he missed one game with a minor injury). His minutes will likely be managed, but don't see him being left out of the squad again (especially with how poor Liverpool were without him).

            a) I disagree. Think it's far more likely that he plays 60 minutes before going onto the bench to keep his match fitness up

            b) even if that is not the case, with games against bournemouth, WBA and Stoke coming up, I will happily have his fresh legs for 20 minutes against their defence's tired ones

Thanks mate. I understand your point and appreciate the research.

But again, when it comes to salah and kane, we don’t even need to know if they are extra motivated, they are arguably the two best fpl assets this year.

And also I am pretty sure Salah became on pens just because of the golden boot, because historically he is not a very good penalty taker, and you remember how Milner left the penalty to him. So what I am saying it’s not really that it doesn’t make a difference, if Liverpool get two penalties between now and the end of the season, that’s probably two extra goals tht existed just because of the golden boot.

I think we're mostly arguing the same points - the golden boot is largely irrelevant, they're worth picking because they're superb FPL assets.

On the Salah penalty thing, not sure he's historically a poor penalty taker (nor an obviously great one). From the stats I can see he's only ever taken 6 and the save from Lossl in October was his only miss. Also, October was probably a bit early to be thinking about the golden boot I'd imagine. Not sure. Anyway, we agree on the main element anyway 🙂

          Yeah we agree.

But I am sure about the penalty thing. Back then he was level with kane and he needed that penalty just for that. Salah never took a penalty at Roma, Fiorentina, Bazel or even his first Egyptian club. He took the penalty at the final qualifying WC game for Egypt because he was the only brave enough player to take the risk at 90’, but he is not a penalty taker.

No, because he is simply maturing in to a better player generally .... but that said, the rest of his team were teeing him up in the final games of last season which certainly helped, whereas the Man U players were doing nothing of the sort for Lukaku

I suspectthere is a lot of confirmation bias at play when people rely on the last two seasons to justify their decision to go for Kane. I enjoyed your analysis in part because I honestly did not know which way it would side, so I was genuinely intrigued. I'm already erring on avoiding Kane until 36 or 37 (I'm not stupid enough to go without him in 37) and this has added weight to this.

I really think Vardy will continue to match Kane in the short run as he has done the last 6-8 weeks and that people are better off going Vardy and using the funds in midfield. Then get Kane in for the double.

Great research. The conclusion certainly puts forward a good case for Kane - not that he's chasing the golden boot - but because his form and fixtures are great.

I do think that it depends on the player and circumstance. For example Kane has had the golden boot for the last two seasons - he thinks its his and will be going all out to ensure Salah doesn't get it. He even said in the interview that it would be nice for a striker to win it this year - implying Salah as a winger is unworthy. Whether he succeeds though is down to form and fixtures - which luckily he has.

It clearly does matter as well tosome of those above - Drogba in partic snatching the ball off Lampard before a penalty for his final day hattrick. He spoke about the golden boot before that match too.

Hardly a career ending one. He only missed an international. He's had two runs outs now.

Earlier this season when he missed a game through injury he had two run outs afterwards, in which he also blanked in.

He then scored four in the next four matches.

Worth noting that the Drogba penalty came with the score at 5-0 and the game completely sewn up. Chelsea had an earlier penalty that match with the score at 1-0 against a dreadful 10 man Wigan and Lampard took it. They didn't give a damn about Drogba's golden boot credentials until the game was beyond doubt.

I'm sure the golden boot played a factor in Drogba being allowed that one meaningless penalty towards the end of the match but in the grand scheme of things it's pretty trivial.

It's not about Kane and Salah, it's about Spurs and Liverpool as teams.

It gives both more incentive to attack and score more goals in matches already won, leaving the handbrake off.

I watched Spurs live over GW's 37 and 38 and I'm not buying that they weren't going all out to get Kane more goals. Their attacking - when Chelsea had already won the title - was relentless vs Leicester and Hull City.

I doubt very much that Poch will be resting or subbing Kane over the run-in and I reckon Kane will also be pushing Eriksen to one side on free-kicks around the box.

I also reckon Klopp will want to give Salah the opportunity for pitch time around CL - more so than normal. And Salah will be on pens I imagine.

So for me, it does play a part.

I doubt very much that Klopp will care about giving Salah pitch time around the CL because of some personal accolade, I'm guessing he got the fright of his life when he came off injured against City, with Salah they have a good chance of beating anyone in the CL, without they don't.

Klopp team selection against Everton was a massive indication with where his priorities are now, the fact that Chelsea failed to win at the weekend probably strengthens the justification to play weaker teams around the CL not risk his star players so they go into battle having run around playing heavy metal high intensity football 3 days before.

CL Semi Final/Final or Golden Boot? Only a Fantasy Manager would suggest it's a contest.

That's a fair point, Mark, and maybe there is something to it.

For me though a golden boot record isn't made in the last 2 Gameweeks of the season. It's made over the course of the season and I think the motivation to score multiple goals is there in any given gameweek. As a professional, I just don't think Kane tries harder or tries less in certain games. He will always be trying to hit that maximum level of performance whether it's gameweek 1 or gameweek 38.

This is really good work, thanks for putting in the time and being so thorough.

Another external factor that I wonder about is whether PL teams/managers/players have had an eye on the World Cup at all in the last month of seasons past -- small sample sizes to be sure, but either finding form or finding health could be significant as well, especially with advances in medical/physio treatment making all involved even more aware of how issues may impact performance.

I agree that the Golden Boot thing is a bit "touchy feely" and doesn't stand up to analysis but I do think it's an individual thing. With Salah, I don't know if it is motivation, if he's mentioned it anywhere in the media but Kane is old school. If he could wear big clodhopper boots and baggy kit and play with a heavy leather ball he would. Things like England and winning with his boyhood club (if you ignore his Arsenal kit pictures) matter to him... I genuinely think the Golden Boot really matters to him.

Last bit of stats nonsense I'll add to this then I'll leave it alone.

For the players/seasons above, I had a quick look at the goals per game they scored in the last 6 fixtures vs their goals per game for the season as a whole.

Kane's last 6 games last season was the biggest upturn in form from the sample. His downturns in 14/15 and 15/16 were also some of the worst...

        From largest to smallest:
        Kane 16/17 - 9 in 6 (1.50 gpg) vs 29 in 30 (0.97 gpg) = 55% above his season average
        Aguero 15/16 - 6 in 5 (1.20 GpG) vs 24 in 30 (0.80 GpG) = 50% above his season average
        Aguero 14/15 - 7 in 6 (1.17 GpG) vs 26 in 33 (0.79 GpG) = 48% above his season average
        van Persie 12/13 - 6 in 6 (1.00 GpG) vs 26 in 38 (0.68 GpG) = 46% above his season average
        Ronaldo 08/09 - 3 in 4 (0.75 GpG) vs 18 in 33 (0.55 GpG) = 37.5% above his season average
        Sanchez 16/17 - 5 in 6 (0.83 GpG) vs 24 in 38 (0.63 GpG) = 32% above his season average
        Anelka 08/09 - 4 in 6 (0.67 GpG) vs 19 in 37 (0.51 GpG) = 30% above his season average
        Adebayor 07/08 - 5 in 6 (0.83 GpG) vs 24 in 36 (0.67 GpG) = 25% above his season average

        Rooney 09/10 - 0 in 3 (0.00 GpG) vs 26 in 32 (0.82 GpG) = 100% below his season average

Overall totals for all of those figures:

86 goals in 119 games from the final 6 games = 0.72 goals per game.
561 goals in 770 games from the whole season sample = 0.73 goals per game.

Basically nothing in it. Some impressive variance but overall players score at the rate they have all season.

Excellent analysis - the high variance is actually really important here.

It indicates that some players give up at the end of the season and have no motivation (perhaps their club has nothing to play for) whereas others gain a newfound motivation if they are going for the title/top 4 or perhaps even the Golden boot (so it may actually go against your conclusion).

Kane features at both ends of that variance though - he’s done well once and poorly twice, seems unreasonable to place importance upon the one success and brush off the two failures.

I think what's important is that Kane has constantly talked about the golden boot in interviews, demonstrating that it does play on his mind.

He's clearly a player that looks for motivation in records (some players don't bother this this but he clearly does), at the end of last year he wanted the most EPL goals in a calendar year and finished it with 2 hat tricks. So this is just another record he's after.

Stats are misleading here in a sense - better to focus on the individual players.

Yes, I think that records and golden boots are as big a motivation for 'arry as they were for Alan Shearer.

I feel like no one is acknowledging the gorilla in the room regarding this discussion. Do we know how motivated Kane or Salah are as part of explicit language in their contracts around goal totals or specific Golden Boot clauses? The way Kane has been shameless about claiming the Eriksen goal leaves a person wondering if it is more than just a striker really loving the glory surrounding goals for his squad...

        Great post Greenwindmill

The different opinions on the “golden boot race” can be tied together with an appreciation of what gives players and teams an “edge” ....

Greens conclusions and others who have chipped in fplv are right: the players and teams are generally professional and trying to predict when they will not be (i.e. corrupt) is a fool’s errand. They generally perform professionally over all fixtures, not just the last few “golden boot race” ones.

At the same time, other posters have noted an increase in energy in the pursuit of the “golden boot” for one team: spurs 2016/17. And there may be other examples. I’m sure there are.

        They are both acceptable arguments.

Spurs certainly had an edge to their game towards the end of the season and they were rewarded in terms of points, place and raising the prestige of their club, a club which has all but languished in mid-table for 30 years. They may have collectively been using the “golden boot race” as an edge (or extra motivation), something which helped them to achieve their professional team goals.

FFPL players need to wary of assuming this will reoccur for Spurs and Kane this year. It could, but not necessarily. In fact, the contrary could equally occur if that is what gives the team an edge. Perhaps for example Kane’s pursuit of Eriksens goal could be taken negatively in the dressing room and so motivation could change: ok lads let’s show everybody that we are a team that scores goals from everywhere, not just off Kane!

I like that you begin "who wins" because I imagine it's "who wins in a fight between..."

.. but in FPL I think B. Sanchez looks like he is in form, Morata is getting an assist and goal... Haz has been unreliable all season and Lukaku will no doubt get 5 or 6 points each game but I don't think it justifies the price.
