Scout Notes – Liverpool Win Raises Big Issues

A tight and, at times, tempestuous Champions League quarter-final second leg goes Liverpool’s way to force Fantasy managers into some major late-season decisions.

An early strike, a first-half onslaught and an offside decision crying out for VAR came and went at the Etihad Stadium as the Reds survived and then thrived once Mohamed Salah had given them an all-important away goal.

The fit-again Egyptian’s cool finish, after Sadio Mane’s burst into the penalty area, changed everything, with Nicolas Otamendi’s later mistake handing Roberto Firmino the opportunity to secure the visitors a 2-1 win on the night.

The Brazilian striker’s finish was as assured as that of his compatriot Gabriel Jesus, who converted Raheem Sterling’s pass after just two minutes to stir hope of an unlikely comeback among the Man City faithful.

The excellent Leroy Sane then looked to have made it 2-0 just before half-time, only to be incorrectly ruled offside when he bundled the ball home from a rebound off James Milner.

And yet amid all the fire and the fury that followed – City coach Pep Guardiola was sent to the stands for his reaction to the decision – the fact remained that the hosts outshot Liverpool by 20 efforts to five, but overall attempts on target stood at three apiece by the final whistle.

Liverpool soaked up incessant waves of pressure in the first half and then took their chances when City faltered after the break – classic European tactics that will serve them well in the semi-finals.

They’ll discover who they face on Friday, but rotation of their key assets – and specifically their exalted front three – is likely to be a given now.

Salah’s groin issue meant he wasn’t risked for Saturday’s trip to Everton, while Firmino dropped to the bench at Goodison Park. Both flourished at the Etihad once they swapped positions after the break, with the former causing all sorts of problems from a more central role.

If coach Jurgen Klopp is prepared to keep his best players fresh for Europe by leaving them out of a Merseyside derby, then nothing can be taken for granted domestically from here on in.

The semi-final will take place on April 24 and 25 and May 1 and 2.

Liverpool travel to West Brom in Gameweek 35’s reduced schedule before the tie, entertain Stoke City in between the two legs and then travel to Chelsea (in Gameweek 37) on the Sunday after the semi-final is completed.

What to do with the 56.6%-owned Salah is by far the biggest issue – and one that will be examined in greater detail in the latest of our Burning Questions series tomorrow.

With seven days between Saturday’s visit from Bournemouth and the trip to West Brom, a start against the Cherries looks likely as he goes in search of a tenth double-digit tally at Anfield.

Nonetheless, he is already the second most sold player of Gameweek 34. Some 67,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have moved him on, while more than 90,000 have done the same with Firmino (43.9%).

Having said that, last night’s result and Salah’s goal has already impacted on the market. According to our own Matz1illa’s NTI Index tool, Salah’s net transfers have shown profit since, wth his ownership now in the recovery position.

Salah’s Net Transfers Last Four Days
members

Meanwhile, the tireless Mane (10.9%), who started both legs of the quarter-final and the derby at Everton, has seen fewer sales (19,000+), but looks just as vulnerable to rotation ahead of what are otherwise plum fixtures with West Brom and Stoke.

Liverpool’s lack of a Double Gameweek had already lessened the appeal of their key assets, although those managers with the Free Hit chip to play in Gameweek 35’s reduced slate had at least been eyeing up their players for the trip to The Hawthorns.

Last night’s result puts even that strategy in doubt and will surely only hasten sales in the Reds’ main men.

The City conundrum

The opposite may now be true for Man City’s stars.

It’s been a chastening week for Guardiola’s side, involving three straight losses in, arguably, their three biggest matches of the season.

That is sure to have an impact on the confidence and morale in the camp, with a trip to Spurs this weekend hardly the ideal fixture for such attributes to be rebuilt.

A 3-2 loss to Man United denied them the chance to secure the league title, which in turn keeps their players highly motivated, in the short term at least, for a run-in (tot SWA whu HUD & BHA sot) that includes both a fixture in Gameweek 35 and a Double Gameweek 37.

There are a number of factors to consider, however.

Rotation has always been a major issue concerning Guardiola’s team, and some of City’s key men – David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne in particular – looked decidedly jaded as last night’s match wore on.

Indeed, the Belgian is currently the fifth most sold player heading into Gameweek 34, his weekend benching (for the first time this season) no doubt a factor in some of those transfers-out.

A huge match away at Spurs might well be a bridge too far for some players already mentally and physically taxed by the events of the last week.

The question of who features up front is a vexed one as well.

Jesus started and scored, while Sergio Aguero only appeared after 66 minutes as the home side chased the match following Salah’s equaliser.

Doubts over the Argentine’s fitness will be a continuing cause for concern until he manages more pitch-time than the 24 minutes he was given against Liverpool and the 14 in the Manchester derby.

City’s defensive fragility is another problem.

They’ve shipped eight goals in those three high-profile defeats and have kept only three clean sheets in the past 11 Gameweeks.

Fernandinho, who put in an epic shift in front of a back three last night, will be suspended for the next two league matches to further compromise their solidity at the back.

Double Gameweek 37’s home clashes with Huddersfield and Brighton look very tempting on paper, but the league title will be won by then if they can secure two victories over the next three fixtures.

A home match against Swansea City in Gameweek 35 and the trip to West Ham that follows look like excellent opportunities to seal the Premier League deal, as Guardiola confirmed post-match.

“Now it’s time to recover. After Tottenham, we have a long week to Swansea then a long week to West Ham where we can win the two games needed for winning the most important competition.”

If that proves to be the case, there will be doubts over both the make-up of the team and the players’ motivation to finish off what is turning out to be a bittersweet end to an otherwise stellar season.

Morning all, so if one was to keep Lukaku and Kane for the season, who would you use your TC chip on? Lukaku this week or Kane GW37, I see the general consensus is Kane GW37. What are the feelings now we are nearing the weekend? I am debating and being swayed for the Lukaku TC this GW if just for the reasoning, take what you have I.e who know a what happens in a few weeks, injury etc etc

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Given Liverpool's win are you:

*Already Salah-less and won't be getting him back

*Salah-less but looking to get him back.

*Considering ditching him at some point later in the season run in

*Holding on to him for dear life, given he scored 29 points in his last league home match.

I sold and will maybe get him back in 38. Worried about him this weekend but with a double game week I don’t think many will captain him and I have spread the cash to get a better BB. Then it’s WBA before semi first leg, then stoke before second leg so rotation likely. Chelsea in dgw 37 and then could maybe get him back in 38 for Brighton

Anfield Express does a significant job with those leaked news. They could be really helpful.

      Copying my last post:

GW 34 (BOU): Starts and plays 80' - 90' (4 days after previous, 7 days before next)
GW 35 (wba): Starts and plays 60' - 75' (7 days after previous, 3-4 days before next) - If he does not play, it would be an 11 days gap before CL Semi which is not good.
GW 36: (STO) Benched and plays 0' unless Stoke resists until 60' (which is highly unlikely) - sandwiched between 2 legs of CL semis
GW 37: (che) Starts and plays 80' - 90' (4-5 days after previous, 7 days before next)
GW 38: (BHA) Starts and plays 90' (7 days after previous, 13 or 90 days before next)

So I am planning to sell before GW36 and to get back before GW38 to captain him against BHA for another 40-50 pointer

GW 34 (BOU): Starts and plays 60' - 70' (4 days after previous, 8 days before next)
GW 35 (wba): Comes of bench and plays 20' (7 days after previous, 2-3 days before next) - If he does not play, it would be an 11 days gap before CL Semi which is what Klopp has done a few years ago in EL
GW 36: (STO) Benched and plays 20' to stay sharp - sandwiched between 2 legs of CL semis
GW 37: (che) Starts and plays 80' - 90' (4-5 days after previous, 7 days before next)
GW 38: (BHA) Starts and plays 90' (7 days after previous, 13 or 90 days before next)

So I have already sold and claimed 15 Eriksen points to get back before GW38 to triple captain him against BHA for another 60 pointer

I will consider getting rid though if I see any sought of hint of rest this weekend to fully recover. @anfieldexpress has been spot on all season so will look at that thurs/fri. The reason I say this is you can get him on FH 35 and 36 is sandwiched by the semi.

If he plays vs bou then amazing but have a feeling there will rotation in the team. If I keep he will likely make way for City/Spurs mid in GW36 which I think will be very popular

As discussed last night on the Scoutcast, I'm keeping for GWK 34 - can't see any reason to rest him for that.

GWK 35 I'll keep too on my FH - although do fear rotation. Will probably not captain and will ensure I have a reasonable first sub. As we saw with Stoke it only takes him 23 mins to score a brace so I'm happy with a cameo.

GWK36 - then it becomes dicey. Big risk of rotation around second leg of the CL semifinal. Spurs have a great fixture then a double, while Salah has a poor GWK 37 fixt and no double. This is when I may swap him for Eriksen.

GWK 38 - may get him back if funds allow. Home game to Brighton looks too good to pass up.

I went Salah-less on my wildcard last week but have left enough funds ITB to get him back. Won't be till GW36 at earliest and will depend on form of Alli/Mahrez (the makeweights) and how likely he is to be rested at that point

I'm seriously considering getting rid in a Auba, Salah, Mustafi transfer for Kane, Sanchez and 5.0 defender. It makes me nervous getting rid before BOU but Sanchez looks like he's starting to find form and could well be my captain this week. I'll be FH him back for 35 so it's not too much trouble. I'm currently at 200k so feel that there's nothing much to lose really.

Thanks for the 306 points Mo, that's propelled me into the top 2000. See ya next season but now I'm assuming that even if you play, the gegenpressing will be toned down to save energies for the semis.

After I lost 3 'Pool in my GW35 WC, I've got a 15-man squad of DGWers for a BB this weekend with 11 of them currently available for DGW37.

Sold Salah on my GW33 wildcard. Considering him for GW35 Free Hit - but other than that I might well leave him out. He’ll be benched, subbed early and generally wrapped in cotton wool.

Wish I'd made the move for Eriksen last week. I had favoured Eriksen over Alli (my comments last week reflect that).

But I held so hoping he produces a brace this week.

Salah-less with FH and I will not need him in GW34 or GW37, I will have him in GW35 with my FH which means I will risk not having him and will not get him at GW36 either. The question, for me, is, when everything is said and done, will I need him in GW38. I may and I will think about this and save funds, but not before GW37. For now, I am Slag-Less and feel free as the clouds.

35: FH - assess, probably have him and not captain
36: Sell for Mcity midfielder or as an enabler for Barnes to Auba
38: Bring him in by selling Mahrez

I feel guilty for even considering swapping Salah for Ali last week. He stays and is red hot. Golden boot could be won over the next 2 games. More than capable of scoring 4-5 goals in 150 mins providing he gets an hour or so against WBA. I feel guilty for not captaining him this week, though Kane can easily get a brace or 2 so it's a no-brainer

Salah-less with 2m in the bank to get him back.

Tossing a coin back and forth between getting him back now or getting Lukaku now and getting him back in 38.

I know I won't C him until 38 so going without is winning more than getting him back.

Also, think we're at the same point we are with him as we have been with Lukaku (when United's fixtures stiffened up at the start of the season) and both Kane exits.

Two out of three of those went in favour of the selling logic so I don't think anyone needs to be scared, the only reason to really fear someone is if you think they'll be mass captained, I'm not sure Salah will be now until GW38.

GW35 - Part of my FH team (others will have to pay current price)
GW36 - STK, great fixture but doubt he'll play with it being sandwiched in between CL semi-finals - SELL.

Too much rotation. No double game weeks. Pretty expensive.

Have a free hit available which I intend to use in week 35 so I may get him in for that, but can see him being rested for that one, so I think I’ll pass.

        Each to their own.

Here's what the Manchester Evening News said...

"He was the go-to man all night and, while he gave Liverpool plenty of problems and had a goal wrongly ruled out, the raw natue of his talent is still evident. 7 out of 10.

He got the highest rating from Stuart Brennan who has been watching and writing about City for all the years I've been running this site.

Couldn't agree more Mark. He's a constant live wire. Possibly the most direct and exciting prospect in the Prem. Consistency in a winger is a hard find but I think he's great on the eye

fair enough!..he was the go to man as he got a lot of the ball...but from my view of watching game ( and BT sports highlights) I just saw so many poor crosses and decision making. I think a lot of his mazy dribbles led to nothing in particular and to be caught offside that many times in the second half was criminal. I think TAA was amazing in both legs but Sane didnt turn up in that first game and ok..its debatable..but I dont think he was much better in the second.

Agree on TAA - he was outstanding over the two legs and it was most unexpected given how he got exposed vs City earlier in the season.

Sane was probably their standout player in terms of direct threat. KDB impressive but all around the box. Sane was the only one that looked incisive. He gave the ball away because he was trying things. Sterling worked hard but didn't have the same threat. Just my opinion. Not Stuart's 😉

Feeling happy with my BB team (incl. relieved I decided to hold on Salah) but can we have a support group for those of us who are going Kane-less this week!?

      DDG, Ryan
      Alonso, Vertonghen, Morgan. Lowton, Mustafi
Salah, Eriksen (V), Son, Willian, Mili
      Lukaku (C), Vardy, Barnes

Please Harry .... don't explode! I promise to get you back in for GW36

Assuming the current figures are still loosely reflected in the end of the season figures...

Arsenal defence/GK should cost less than Burnley defence/GK next season, as they have conceded far more goals than Burnley this year.
At the very least they should be equally priced, as they have the same number of clean sheets.

      Discuss.

the shiny red/white jersey will still be 1mil more expensive than the claret I reckon... for no reason other than Arsenal are classed as a big club & Burnley aren't.

        I know who'll i'll be investing in

When Chelsea finishes 10th you know that nex season they have more chance to become chamions than any from teams on 5-9th positions. Also, Arsenal defence might be good next season.

Any team's defence "might" be good next season. That is a null point.

It should be like that, and I’m sure Burnley starters will all be 5.0, but Arsenal will be 0.5 more.

Might be worth investing in Arsenal with 4/5 consecutive home games at the start

Have 1 FT, Gudmundsson in my team & BBing this weekend.

Worth getting rid of him for a definite player? Feel like it's a bit of a waste of BB'ing with him without knowing he will play both games.

Leading my ML by a small margin (< 20 pts).

Rival and I can only afford to swap Auba to EITHER Kane or Lukaku for this GW.

My hope is that we do the same obviously. If you were in his position what would you do? What will be the most likely choice.

      I am leaning towards Kane.

Considering Salah to Alli, mainly because the cash then makes Vardy>Kane easier with 2xFT after FH 35 before TC 37, or 3x transfers and a -4 to do Barnes>Kane..

For those who’re chasing, TC Aguero at 37 could be gold...

But if your OR is good, I think it’s a big risk.

Do you consider any Arsenal and/or City players for GW37? City maybe will be champs until then.

Thoughts on Triple Captain; Realistically it has to be 1 of the following 3; (Kane, Lukaku, City Player for DGW)

With that in mind surely Lukaku or Kane this week is the best bet because by then City will have won the league so rotation between Jesus and Aguero rules them out, KDB plays every min so by then may get some rest, Silva is dodgey as is Sane for a Triple C

So leaves me thinking Kane or Lukaku this week.

Lukaku - Explosive but inconsistent, that said great fixtures this week.

Kane - Well surely fixture proof and worth having as Triple C under any circumstances!!

      Advise welcome,
