Man City stroll past West Ham 4-1 to promote a pair of compelling alternatives to Harry Kane for the Double Gameweek 37 captaincy.

Any doubts as to the motivation of Pep Guardiola and his title-winning team were brushed aside on Sunday afternoon, both by the players on the pitch and post-match by the coach himself.

City produced a dominant display at the London Stadium, outshooting the Hammers 19-4, before Guardiola outlined just what his all-conquering side have left to play for with three matches remaining, while also appearing to dismiss the idea of heavy rotation to come…

“We wanted to win today so that we can get the record of 96 points at home when we get the trophy in front of our people next week. We have something special in terms of confidence and we needed some targets to set in front of us.

Huddersfield, Brighton, Southampton, they deserve for us to be who we are all season. It wouldn’t be fair to them if we came down here for a holiday.

We have to show who we are, who we’ve been all season, that’s why we scored nine goals in two games.”

That should be music to the ears of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers looking to bring in City assets for their decidedly attractive Double Gameweek 37 (HUD BHA).

And two of their brightest stars – Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus – made convincing cases for it to be them.

Sterling continued his fine form with three assists, which took him to a third successive double-digit haul, and his tenth of the season.

He was the most bought midfielder (130,000+) for Gameweek 36 and now has three goals and seven assists from his last six appearances.

Sterling was also unlucky not have a fourth assist when he was clearly fouled by Aaron Creswell in the penalty area, only for a spot-kick to be denied by the match officials. He was also deprived of an assist when Jesus saw his penalty saved by Lukasz Fabianski in Gameweek 35.

His consistent performances and points output makes him a strong rival to Kane for the Triple Captain chip.

Jesus is another.

The striker was second only to the Spurs option for Gameweek 36 transfers-in (133,000+), and his goal at West Ham means he has scored in each of his last four starts, with two assists thrown in for good measure.

In fact, he has now been directly involved in 30 goals in just 25 starts (19 goals, 11 assists) over his two FPL seasons.

Sterling may just be considered for a rest in one of the Gameweek 37 fixtures, whereas Sergio Aguero’s absence through injury appears to make Jesus an assured a starter as any player can be in Guardiola’s line-up.

One recently rested player, Leroy Sane, is testament to the coach’s rotation policy. The German returned after his benching, following six straight starts, for the Gamweek 35 win over Swansea City.

As a result, the midfielder was bought by just 17,000 heading into this weekend, but today’s strike means he now has two goals and an assist from his last four starts.

City’s other goals came from Fernandinho and a Pablo Zabaleta own goal. Kevin De Bruyne was denied the assist on that one, with his cross taking two diversions, first from goalkeeper Adrian and then Declan Rice, who stuck the ball off Zabaleta for a calamitous pinball-like own goal.

Not so rosy elsewhere

All three of Sterling, Jesus and Sane could well be the go-to options for next week’s double, with the first two currently the most purchased players of Gameweek 37.

And their attraction is perhaps partly down to the doubts surrounding City’s central midfield stars.

De Bruyne’s influence remains unparalleled, but his Fantasy form is tailing off badly – another blank today made it just one goal and an assist in eight matches.

At least he was involved.

David Silva’s run of seven league starts came to an end. He was the third top midfielder for Gameweek 36 transfers-in, only for Guardiola to give him the weekend off.

Problems remain at the back as well.

Last week’s clean sheet against the Swans proved to be a false dawn, as Aaron Cresswell’s fine free-kick, awarded for a foul on Edimilson Fernandes, kept City to just one shutout in five matches.

That made it a barren return for both Nicolas Otamendi (26.2%) and Kyle Walker (13.2%), with the latter’s ownership dented further when their man was subbed off with a muscle issue. Meanwhile, skipper Vincent Kompany missed out altogether through injury.

Guardiola’s willingness to mix and match at the back is not helping City’s defensive solidity, which will surely drive Fantasy managers to invest in attacking assets only for remaining fixtures.

Hammers still not safe

Events yesterday – and this afternoon’s result – keep West Ham fully embroiled in the season’s relegation saga.

They too have a Double Gameweek 37 (lei MUN), and next weekend’s trip to the freefalling Foxes could well be the best chance they have of securing the victory that should confirm their Premier League place for another campaign.

The Hammers’ assets are certainly not attracting great Fantasy interest, however.

Aside from the 7.4%-owned Chicharito, who hasn’t started a match since Gameweek 29 and is presumably to be found in a number of ‘ghost ship’ sides, their most popular player is Marko Arnautovic (6.2%).

But the Austrian blanked for the second time in three Gameweeks – hardly surprising when the Hammers managed just a single shot on target against the champions – which meant that it was left to goalscorer Cresswell to again get in the points.

The defender’s first goal of the season followed up an assist – his seventh of the season – in Gameweek 34.

Cresswell’s dead-ball delivery offers a real attacking threat, which is just as well when he’s operating in a defence that has managed just one clean sheet in eight Gameweeks.

Arnautovic’s continued role as the central striker will surely persuade his owners to hold for the double, while Cresswell (2.2%) and perhaps Manuel Lanzini have some merit as a risky differential, but David Moyes’ side offers precious little else for Fantasy managers to enthuse over.

Long post and shameless brag alert, but it does come with a deeper point / question.

Do you think more managers need to be open to coming up with their own unique strategies tailored to fit the precise circumstances of their team? For me personally, the last 2 GWs have shown that completely ignoring the template strategy can be just fine.

I played my Free Hit back in GW30 when my BGW31 prepared team looked awful (again a bit of an 'outside the box' approach). So in GW35 I had saved 2 FT and took a -12 to make 5 transfers to get what I thought looked as strong as a Free Hit team, while at the same time rebuilding a team that could carry me home for the rest of the season. My ML rivals were excited because I was taking hits and they had the free hit, they saw it as their chance to claw back my lead.

In the end I scored 67 (-12) in GW35 and only dropped the 12-15 points on my rivals using free hit. The difference has been this GW, where my new team has crushed it (71 with Kane and Alli to play) largely built on the hits from last week - Baines, Sterling, Jesus, Zaha, as well as my long-standing enablers like Ryan and Burnley defence.

And predictably, this week my rivals took -8 and -12 hits respectably to get the Man City players I already took hits for last week, which basically negates the advantage of the FHC. All up it's been about a 45 point swing in my favour without using the FHC.

Was luck involved? Absolutely, but it always is and I've had my share of the bad kind. I just think it shows there's perhaps too much emphasis placed on a 'right' strategy, when there are so many different ways to use chips and gain advantages. The FHC has, in my opinion, actually hurt a lot of teams because the jump from GW34 to GW36 left them with Willian, Gross, Lingard, Vardy etc at the expense of City, Zaha etc. Food for thought anyway.

Good post. I also used my FHC many moons ago - just wish I was braver last week and brought in more City than just Sterling - but them the risks you take. The GW32 wildcarders have been stung really by the poor form of so many of those template players and the uncertainty around City rotation concerns.

I think if you leave your chips for the end of the season and you put some thought into using them, you will be fine. In fact, as you allude to, people who copy strategies without much thought for their own teams, are likely at a disadvantage to those who do tailor it to their teams.

Agreed 100%. I've really noticed it with teams I keep an eye on - you can see that it's a strategy employed based on common thinking, almost certainly from reading this site, but it doesn't necessarily fit the actual team.

I agree with you on both fronts. I believe the FH chip in 35 made teams stale for 36and maybe 37. I also agree that you got lucky with use of it and subsequent gains.

Used mine in first half of the season, gained 30 pts, used my second WC earlier. prepared team accordingly for DGW, blank weeks bar few hits. Jumped 350k to 50k. All doable

And yet so many managers doing it the 'regular' way thought these alternative paths were madness. The FHC has definitely been a curse on many of those who played it last week and inherited their old team back with players they really didn't want anymore. And they can't fix it with a Wildcard, whereas playing the FHC earlier, I was wildcarding shortly afterwards.

I do follow certain guys here, get advice but i also play my own. I am doing bad this season mainly due to bad captain picks and terrible start. Around 3 mil after GW10. Shocker.

One thing I noticed was GW32 Wildcards being played for teams that actually looked well set up for that GW already. It was obviously a plan, so they stuck with it, but the common sense approach would have been to abort the plan and think on their feet a little. Anyway, I'm certainly not saying that I was right and they were wrong - my point is only that there are many different ways to do what's best for your team.

I’m trying to find the code for a Community League that started in GW28. I think it’s called The Stretch Run or something like that. Can anyone assist?

    If Walker is out:

    A) Alonso + Sterling + J. Ayew
    B) Danilo + Jesus + Arnautovic (-4)

My thinking is that Danilo and Jesus are probably more nailed than Alonso and Sterling (assuming that Walker is confirmed out).

    a) Morgan to Laporte
    b) 4.5 mid to Fernandinho

So Jesus should start both then 🙂 Sterling different player this season, full backs, central defenders will rotate mainly.

Who did you get knocked out by in the FFS Cup?

I look at my transfer stats and rankings, and next to them since GW17 I've had to look at a loss to 'Clueless United' - so embarassing

Got out Sterling in 34 for Mahrez and we know how that went. 2 FTs 0.0 ITB.

    DDG (Ryan)

    Morgan Alonso Vert (Lowton Kiko)
    Mahrez Salah Willian JWP (Ibe)
    Kane Lukaku Barnes

Alonso + Mahrez > Cedric + Sterling a good look?

Who would YOU prioritize in removing:

    1) Willian
    2) Christensen
    3) Mustafi

Salah > Hazard > Salah if no injuries?
Only one without DGW and will BB.
