The Goal Decision System played its part in Brighton confirming their Premier League status and in giving those Fantasy managers who had kept faith in their assets one late push.

Pascal Gross headed the Seagull’s winner in Friday night’s Gameweek opener, getting on the end of a Jose Izquierdo cross into the box which David De Gea failed to clear.

Millimetres decided the goal but it was enough to seal a deserved three points for Chris Hughton’s men.

It gave Gross his second goal in three Gameweeks and his seventh of a hugely successful campaign which has seen him claim eight assists, 24 bonus points and Brighton’s Player of the Year award.

He has been involved – scored or assisted – 46% of Brighton’s goals this season when on the pitch, and 54% at the Amex Stadium.

Gross also now sits second only to Mohamed Salah for Fantasy Premier League points per million (ppm) value among midfielders (27.3 vs 27.7).

Indeed, the German remains Brighton’s most popular asset as part of 15.6% of squads though he has lost over 40,000 in ownership over the past two Gameweeks off the back of a relatively dry spell of seven matches between Gameweeks 27 to 34 which provided just two assists.

Those who sat tight benefited from this late reward and will now take Gross into matches at Man City in midweek and a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on the final day.

Ryan Delivers For Bench Boosters

Hughton’s defence also produced a second consecutive clean sheet having previously gone 13 Gameweeks without a defensive return.

It meant that goalkeeper Mat Ryan added to his 10-point return at Burnley in Gameweek 35 with another eight from Friday’s win.

Part of 202,000 squads, the Australian was benched by 70% of those owners for Gameweek 35; that figure stood at 68% for last night’s encounter. However, managers with the Bench Boost active will have received an early dividend.

Ryan is now ranked top for ppm across the four positions with 30.9.

Similarly, cut-price centre-backs Lewis Dunk – owned by 2.9% – and Shane Duffy – by 3.0% – also delivered for a second successive Gameweek.

Pogba investment falls flat

Man United were abject for all but the final ten minutes of Friday’s clash.

Paul Pogba’s late surge in transfer interest went unrewarded as his 140,000 new owners sat back to witness another of his frustrating and ineffective displays. He fired five shots on goal, though four arrived from outside the box with just one effort hitting the target.

Up front, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were given opportunities to impress in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez. They failed to make an impact.

Indeed, post-match, Jose Mourinho gave this damning appraisal of their performance…

“The players that replaced others didn’t perform at a good level, and when individuals don’t perform at a good level, it’s difficult for the team to perform at a good level. Maybe now you understand why some players play more than others and you don’t ask why A, B or C don’t play more.”

“For some of them, the possibility to start the game, the possibility to give reason to the ones that during the season are always critical towards my choices – why always Lukaku, why always Lukaku, why always Lukaku. Now you have the answer why always Lukaku. Why always this? Why always that? You have the answer.”

Jesse Lingard was also absent from the starting line-up at the Amex Stadium, though he was introduced from the bench to help inspire a late rally. Lingard had two opportunities in his 22-minute appearance and must now surely start, perhaps along with a fit-again Sanchez, against West Ham on Thursday.

In defence, United were denied the clean sheet by Gross’ header and have now kept just two from their last ten Gameweeks.

Chris Smalling was the most popular defensive signing prior to Friday’s deadline, claiming another 133,000+ owners. He has papered over those recent cracks with three goals in his last eight starts but failed to deliver for his 679,000+ owners last night, as did De Gea in goal; he is owned by 2.6 million.

It was Marcos Rojo who took his turn at centre-back alongside Smalling, while Matteo Darmian also came into a back four at right-back with Antonio Valencia rested.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

FPL Freddo said something interesting on Twitter. If Mourinho was in charge of City, would you expect him to win the league?

FPL General has been vocal about criticising Jose and rightly so. I just don't understand why other high profile people in FPL who support United are happy with such an awful, negative brand of football.

he probably would, imo. Far better quality all over the shop. But it would been a bit more boring-) Being a Liverpool supporter i still watch the table and it says United is second, clear of all uncertainty. Much more fun though, but in the end it could be fifth place and a lost final for my team. People also says United have a better squad, and yes in quantity they have but none of them i would want in Liverpool, i rate Liverpools 12-13 and 14th player higher than Uniteds, if i would have to take a player from Uniteds squad players, i´d taken Rashford just because he fits into LIverpools play and would have been a decent back up.

He's a dreadful man manager and I maintain under someone like Pep players like Martial, Sanchez, Pogba et al shine.

So far this season Mourinho has convinced members of the fanbase that:

Lukaku scoring fewer league goals for Manchester United than at Everton is a good thing
Alexis Sanchez with 155 goals and 110 assists in 465 professional appearances is a fraud that we've only uncovered now
4 time Serie A winner and starting France CM Paul Pogba also can't play football like national team mate and Juventus target Anthony Martial
Fellaini is the CM all players should aspire to
He's a great manager who wants to play amazing attacking football but doesn't have any players capable of doing so

I'm eagerly looking forward to the post Mourinho era.

Yes I agree with everything you have said. Having said that enduring 4 years or Van Gaal and Moyes was even more painful. At least we have won some trophies under Mou. But he is a negative manager and not suited to Utd.

        1. Somalion

I like winning trophies, but only if the football is even barely watchable which it largely hasn't been. Most of the time I'm delighted when a United kickoff is early, I can get the crap football out of the way then enjoy watching City/Pool/Spurs over the weekend.

We also largely won second rate trophies. The FA Cup I rate higher, so hope we win that, but it's the weakest of the three big ones (PL, CL and FA Cup). I don't think there's as much progression as Mourinho thinks. All that happened was we've spent a fortune getting in better players which will naturally improve a side. Lukaku, Matic, Pogba and Sanchez all in because Woodward and the club have supported Mourinho hugely. They're probably some of our best signings in recent years.

            Think you nailed it.

Theres certainly a smoke screen Mourinho tries to portray to the media and the fans that the team is actually OK when in fact it isn't. Mou likes to tote his past achievements but his modern day tactics are lagging behind.

How he keeps throwing players under the bus and protects himself is laughable. Would Lukaku starting yesterday made a difference to the way the team was playing? I doubt it.

Rashford and Martial are the two best young forwards we have yet they are limited to game time. People always lug that Rashford has been playing aplenty in Mous time but they are on the wing.

            1. Somalion
              • 16 Years
              8 years, 1 month ago

Exactly, we've had games played the very same way with Lukaku on the pitch, it's pure nonsense and again deflection from the fact that Mourinho isn't doing his job properly. United will finish 2nd in a season that City ran away with the league, Pool have been dropping points as they focus on the Champions League, Chelsea have a managerial fallout with Conte and Arsenal decline to the point that Wenger is leaving. Chelsea and Arsenal get their act together next season and suddenly United might find that 2nd spot hard to come by, not to mention Liverpool strengthening and City.

Even funnier I find is he said something like "Maybe we aren't as good as people think" having just said "Maybe we are better than people think" after beating City. Then he starts getting conspiratorial about players not being disappointed about the performance, all that suggests to me is, if true, that players in that team really do not buy into his philosophy. I can see why. United don't play the dullest football in the top 6, they play some of the dullest football in the league full stop. If I was in any way a talented attacker I'd want out of there as soon as possible.

People will point to things like Rashford's minutes, but nobody talks about whether he has improved at all which is very much so influenced by the coaching (I don't think he has, looks the exact same to me). Same goes for Martial, people complain he makes similar errors, but why is that not coached to improve? Even worse, he clearly put in a shift to fit into Mourinho's side at the start of the season. 9 goals, 4 assists in 22 PL appearances before Sanchez came in, that was damn good going. Then he's dropped. Flat out replaced because, even if he had been scoring like Salah, Mourinho doesn't like him and that's that.

Yeah, but I've been punished by every player and I mean every player I've gotten rid of in the week I transferred them out so that played in my mind. A part of me wants to believe that he'll get at least something even an assist in the last two home games considering he was even more consistent than Ericksen throughout two thirds of the season.

Yeah, but many of his "assists" have been just side way passes tbh... Not that he actually created anything...

Creates 1.68 chances a game on average, 1.2 key passes. From a CM that's good. Not De Bruyne level, but better than most other CMs in the league. While playing in one of the worst football set ups in the PL. I'd love for anyone to tell me one attacker at United currently that is bettering their previous seasons at other clubs (hint, the answer is none of them).

Jay Egersdoff said something about teams fighting relegation and how they turn up and put in quite a performance against top teams. I think we're starting to see tht with Brighton and we'll probably see it with Brom, Ham, Southampton and Chelsea. Actually, the Southampton vs Swansea looks like a thriller. Really excited about that one.

    What would be ideal tonight?
Swansea running riot at Bournemouth and keeping a cleanie.
West Ham thumping Lei with a cleanie, Arnie leading the way.
Spurs trashing WBA with a cleanie, Kane hatty or the like would do.
Tadic going off at Everton and keeping a cleanie.

FPL should arrange the DGW’s earlier in the season when then there is less rotation.

Leaving them so late is just bad planning.

They should just put all the fixtures of the season into one single game week. That way rotation would even out.
