Three New Signings for FFS

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce three new additions to the team ahead of the World Cup and the 2018/19 season.

Firstly, David Munday joins as full-time Editor.

Formerly sports writer for the Plymouth Herald, David has rapidly become known in the Fantasy Football community for his articles and social media presence for that publication.

A prolific writer of excellent Fantasy Premier League content and the host for the Herald’s own FPL podcast, he will bring an exciting new editorial approach to the site.

David is joined by Neale Rigg, who arrives as our full-time Deputy Editor.

Neale – aka “Skonto Rigga” – is a vastly experienced writer of 12 years who has been producing excellent FPL content for Statszone this season.

He has been playing FPL since 2006/07 and is currently ranked 1258 in the world.

Neale will be assisting David and also our new Community Manager.

Geoff Dance comes into that role as our third appointment.

Geoff has been working behind the scenes since 2017, and now comes into the Community and Partnerships role full-time.

You may know Geoff as “Pukka Geoff” or more recently “Geoff” in the community and will have perhaps noted that he was ranked 11th in our Career Hall of Fame ladder after finishing in the top 3000 for the past three seasons, including a 49th place finish in 2016/17.

Geoff will firstly be focused on adding to our moderation team and helping Mat and Ed develop HomeCrowd to give us the tools to improve the community. I’m sure he will be turning to the community for guidance on both in the coming weeks.

These additions mean that Paul now moves to a new Head of Content role, working with David and his team overseeing editorial both on Fantasy Football Scout and for our partners.

Meanwhile, Joe will be focusing on editorial content over the summer. In particular, he will head up our new focus on regular video articles and streams as we go into next season. Expect more on that to come.

The three appointments represent a big push from Fantasy Football Scout, and I’m absolutely delighted to add their talent, enthusiasm and new ideas ahead of next season.

Please join me in welcoming Davie, Neale and Geoff.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Spent all season avoiding crappy mid priced mids, and going with 3x premium mids and two 4.5s...eye got turned in my last minute panic WC33, and now I have a 6.0m Jesse, who I actually consider benching each week....1.5m funds I could have easily plunged into the rest on my squad. Shame. Shame. Shame.

I'm definitely going to try something a little different next year and go heavier at the back. If you've got the bottle to stick with it, the more expensive defenders do seem to pay their way in overall points.

I thought that myth was debunked a while back.

Having said that, I may plump for 4-5-1 for the majority of the season. Certainly getting players like Eriksen, Sterling and Azpilicueta and NEVER transferring them out seems the way to go.

It's not a myth. Premium defenders are great value for money. The problem is finding the right balance between value players and expensive captain options.

It’s a reasonable strategy. Suspect we may be priced out of a lot of options next season though. It’s also difficult to ignore form options in MF/FWD, and difficult to move funds around quickly.

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

I think a conservative transfer strategy is the single biggest thing you can do to improve OR... you may not challenge for the top 1k, and it is a cliche, but the AMOUNT of points I’ve lost from being aggressive with transfers again this season is insane.

They come in little batches where you have 3 or 4 or 5 bad weeks, then take an 8 or 12 point hit to change out 3 or 4 of the underperforming players for players who have been scoring well during your bad patch.

Then almost without fail, the week you take the hit, the players you get in go quiet, whilst one or two of the out of form players you just sold score double figures. All of a sudden you’re 25-30 points worse off in one move.

Repeat two or three times a year & welcome to 150k’s 🙁

i think this is true. Less is often more in FPL. I wasn't able to spend much, if any, time on here or on FPL this season and it was going so well - I was ranked 2k in February! I don't think it's a complete coincidence that I've had 7 red arrows in a row since spending more time thinking about FPL in the search for a really high rank... 😆

I am looking my transfers during this season to see what i should learn. Sometimes is bad decisions sometimes is just bad luck.
For example, i see that i was owning Otamendi from GW10 - GW13. He scored 0-1-0-0 during that weeks. Just check his previous/after scores and his overall returns during this season.

I'm definitely going heavier at the back than I did this year, but doubt I'm going really heavy.

Looking at my GW1 team, I started the season with Bertrand, Dann, Dawson, Mee and Mbemba. How poor is that!? No wonder I had a terrible start to the season.

I don’t think so you just got the grab the mid price ones at the right time. The likes of Jones Davies Monreal and Fabianski have been incredible value.

I like to go for cheapest premium defenders, if you can call them that.

FPL is all about value, so players like Davies and Jones have been amazing when they have been pretty much nailed on. It's all about finding those players, not just at the back.

Yeah timing is key. But also having enough depth so that is one doesn’t start you have a Ben Mee or Tark to step so you don’t have to waste transfers sorting it out. That along with patience has served me well this year.

There is a twitter account that has worked out that a dead team worth 100m would be second in the world. Formation? 5-3-2.

For me, a clean sheet is the same as a goal for a striker. If you aim for 15 clean sheets from each defender (a big ask but possible) that’s better than one 6m striker rotated constantly for who is in form.

I am convinced I will load up at the back next year, at least a premium 3 and gk, and look for form in the attackers. Feels like a more consistent approach that the hit and chase

I think that the FPL system of taking half (or more) of the increased value of a player should be scrapped. I got some good answers anti it.

However, there is a easy solution. A simple rule that if you sell a player within a short period you lose all extra value. Say within the same game weeks. Thinking about that now wouldn’t that be good now anyway?

Website technology is greatly advanced and can easily do it. The FPL game needs to sharpen its technology and display in several areas, perhaps player face images for starters. It must be better than it is.

Quite a lot, actually. It lacks a cutting edge. Why show player team shirts and not players faces, for starters. Name of team, easy, three letter code below, after name. So many obvious improvements can be made.

      1. Euro Raiders
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

Right. I will elaborate. Why does The FPL game deprive us of the increased value of a player? That is so wrong. I accept it does it to stop short termism, and multiple wildcard transferring for player profit, which makes sense. I got Salah at the start for 9.0 and he is now worth 10.4 .... I should have the full diffential, not half. That’s the point.

        1. MTPockets
            5 years, 11 months ago

Think of it like a spread - i.e. you get to sell at the bid not the offer. You bought Salah early but the only way he goes up is if others buy later. If you're right you get performance + profit, later buyers some but less of both.

If/when you want to sell the market will offer you half your profit, forcing more serious consideration of the move as harder to buy back in, and effectively giving later buyers some relative pricing/transfer power.

            1. Euro Raiders
              • 6 Years
              5 years, 11 months ago

Great answer. But this is not the stock exchange, it is just a game. Lets look at what you say then.

If you sell the player and want to buy him back, you are going to have to pay the new price. That will make you think carefully about selling him. Obviously true. But is that reason enough to deprive you of half of the increase? I don't buy into that. I do absolutely agree that 'very' shorterism profit has to be restricted, but mid or longer term - no.

Because I bought Salah early, Yes, I have had all the performance gains and others buying later will have to pay more and that is seems the right method, so the increase in value of players is part of the game. Given that, without penalty, you can only transfer one player a week, is pretty restrictive anyway. I reckon over the season I have had at least one new injury per week (on average), that combined with rotation/resting of players causes many issues.

For example: If I sell Salah now for 10.4 I can get (with 0.1 uplift) say Hazard for 10.5. But by giving me only 9.8 I can't. Is that fair to me having kept him for the entire season? I don't think it is. I can't see why it can be fair.

              1. J T
                • 6 Years
                5 years, 11 months ago

Yes it is fair, because everyone else gets the same treatment, it’s just another tactical aspect of the game. I also had Salah from the start, and I’m happy with the price I sold him, you’re not being deprived of anything.

If you start taking away tactical aspects of the game then you’re basically making it easier and less fun.

You’ve made 0.6 on a player and had 240+ points from him yet you’re saying you’ve been deprived? Hahaha funny.

No, you are missing the point. I am not deprived in any way at all. I couldn't care less.

I am trying to suggest ways of improving the game. If you don't agree then that's fine.

“Why does The FPL game deprive us of the increased value of a player?“

“But is that reason enough to deprive you of half of the increase?”

You’re not suggesting ways to improve the game you’re moaning because you feel deprived of half your Salah selling Value..

No, you are still missing my point. I have no intention of selling Salah.

Say I buy player XXX for 5.0 in week 5
In week 6 he is worth 5.1
Why not give the team the extra 0.1 if they want to sell him.
In week 9 he is worth 5.2
Why not give the team the 0.2 if they want to sell him.

Etc, etc. That is my point.

It is just a game, but one where a player price market is integral.

It's not that you're 'deprived' of half the increase, it's that e.g. in the case of Salah rising from 9m to 10.4m the spread is now 9.7/10.4 - consequence of a known rule. Effectively the game's taking an intermediary role to prevent too much skew towards early buyers and potential cumulative effects of luck.

I do think that with increasing squad sizes and rotation something may have to change with transfer rules and/or pricing, but that's a separate topic.

Clearly a player is 'deprived' is half the increase.

But if you think there are valid reasons for that then OK, that is your view.

It is just a game and at the end of the day it comes down to each players judgement of which players to have.

You could maybe try to take a more positive view of my suggestion? Which is all it is.

I get what you're saying, but don't share that view.
The type of dilemma you're outlining (Salah prices and transfers) are what make the game better in my opinion.

          **Wall of Text Alert**

With the season drawing to a close, I think it’s time for a little reflection. How do you feel about your fantasy performance this season? Are you happy with your overall rank? Mini league ranks?

          I’ll start.

It looks as though I’m going to finish 4th in my main mini league and about 200k overall, which is a highly disappointing return, and my worst in years.

I’d also like to ask you what you think went well and what went badly for you this time around.

For me, I’d say my Bad was expertly dodging points by keeping/losing faith in players at exactly the wrong times, and making poor captain choices. Harry Kane and Eden Hazard being the standout non-performers there. I think I captained Kane for every blank and missed every haul at the start of the season. I then contrived to own Hazard for every single blank in between his little purple patches. I didn’t own Kane for his hat tricks and TCd him at new year. I kept faith in Southampton’s good fixtures for too long despite low returns, and was too slow to invest in Bunley’s back line.

As for the Good, I have managed to claw back a 100pt deficit in my main mini league, and second place finish isn’t out of reach just yet, but, like West Brom (and I’m a baggie), I think I’m going to find that it’s too little too late.

In the end, and even with 20:20 hindsight, I’m not sure if I’d change much about my strategy during my abysmal early-season. Maybe just chalk it up as One Of Those Years where my moves, despite being (over?) planned, just happened to wind up being about as reverse-optimised as a rowing boat.

But enough about me. What about you?

Kane exit did for me and generally crap at picking captains

Main desired improvements ... patience with transfers and avoiding early transfers chasing those 0.1's

Got bored half way through the season and started taking hits for that reason alone...need a more disciplined approach

Hope you have better luck next year!

Only my second season, last year 1m (didn’t pay much attention)
This year I’ve been full bull, hit 6k but currently sitting in 9k.
Had some really good calls, but then some terrible ones also, only got my captain right once the entire season.
Won my ML last year and 56points ahead this year, so pretty happy.

My only wish is that Chelsea will do better next year!

Ps. Big thanks to the community for the help! Hoping to finish inside 5k

Wrong - No Salah until GW20 due to my stubbornness.

Wrong - TC Kane back in the double in Jan.

Right - Not to be boastful but most other decisions I am happy with, sitting inside top 500 and should hopefully finish there. No hits all season.

Truly unhappy! Fought back to lead ML (not sewn up yet), 65k OR, will be happy with 50k and ML victory.

Biggest regrets - wasting FH early, Kane TC22 and, not jumping on the Man U defender bandwagon early.

Standout good (lucky) points: Catching Sanchez' relative hauls on WC32, Tadic haul in 36.

Patience and conservatism has been my theme this season, can't say I've enjoyed it as much as maverick.

Finished as 3100 and 6100 the last two season. Frustrating end to last season as I somehow went without Kane during the doubles, cost me a top 1000 finish.

This year I've been struggling at 200k-400k, but the doubles have brought me up to 66k. Hopefully TC Jesus can take me inside top 50k, which I'm happy with considering how awful the 2/3 of the season has been.

I've had Salah all season, had Kane for most of his hattricks and also Aguero for a lot of his hauls. So where did it go wrong? Mainly getting all the wrong defenders at the wrong times, captaining Kane time after time over Salah and ignoring Sterling for far too long (had Sane instead).

Another low point: Started the season with Gross, transferred him out for GW4 (he went on to score 18 points that GW) and continued to consistently score points for like ten gameweeks.

First half of the season, rubbish captain picks. Trusting Harry Kane with the armband, falling into the "why have the most expensive player in FPL if you're not going to captain him" trap.

Second half was much better for captains.

What doomed my season was the GW32 wildcard. Disaster.

Looking at some of the players I brought in compared to players who were overlooked (most of them because they had a single game week or deemed rotation risks) the difference is staggering.

GW32 - GW36 (GW35 scores have not been counted, as many featured in the free hit)

            Alonso 1, 1, 4, 0, 0
            Morgan 5, 1, 1, 0, 0
            Willian 2, 2, 4, 0, 1
            Son 5, 2, 1, 5, 3
            Mahrez 3, 2, 2, 3, 2
            Bailly 0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0
            51 points

            Azpilicueta 1, 11, 1, 2, 9
            Tomkins 0, 0, 8, 6,
            Zaha 5, 7, 14, 14
            Arnoutovic 16, 5, 2, 2
            Sterling 7, 4, 10, 12
            Smalling 6, 7, 2, 14, 2

            167 points

Just picking Smalling over Bailly and Sterling over Mahrez would have left me 50 points better off and top of my main mini-league.

            Very fine margins.

The times when I've "lost" points this season were when I made transfers I didn't need to make.

KDB to Mane in GW4 made no sense when I had the opportunity to save FT, and it resulted in an 11 point swing and a forced transfer with Mane's red card.

Early season I had 2FT and nothing to do, so did Ramsey to Zaha. This cost over 20 points over the coming weeks as Ramsey continued his great form.

I had 2FT again and nothing to do around 27-28 and so did Mili to Ibe as Ibe's stats we're better. This cost a LOT over the coming weeks as I was starting my cheap mid most weeks. Ibe getting randomly injured and so on meant I got quite a few 1 point autosubs as well.

Usually I select next week's captain as soon as the game updated and only change it if there is a compelling reason to do so. Twice this season I had the captaincy on Salah all week and changed it so Hazard on Saturday morning. Both times Hazard blanked and Salah hauled.

These are small details really, I've had my fair share of good fortune as well (getting Salah, Sterling, Firmino very early for low cost) so it's just a case of trying to minimise errors as much as possible next season.

Kane, Willian and KDB basically. I've had them during their blanks (and captained them) and sold them before their hattricks, braces and hauls. It's quite funny really.

It's all about getting more decisions right than wrong, so here's some of my key ones:

            Right:

Gross,Alonso,Salah at the start of the season
Got in Otamendi and Davies when they weren't very highly owned and was rewarded with quite a few CS's and goals
            A well-timed first wildcard
Generally quite well timed formation shifts, from a big defence - to 3 premium strikers - to a heavy midfield
Listening to my 'gut' more than in other seasons - ignoring Kane captain for some of his 'easy' home games and being rewarded with some differential captain hauls, ignoring Kanexit, starting with the wingbacks, ignoring Willian

I'd say the second half of my season has been more wrong than right, and it's cost me a really amazing rank which was in my grasp. Slipped from 700 to 6k but managed to claw my way out of the mire.. but can clearly see what I messed up with.

            Wrong:

Lingard (c) when Kane and Salah both hauled (I was 700 in the world at the time, what was I thinking?)
Taking a -8 and not getting Aguero in around the time he hauled massively.
Pope -> Pickford for a -4 cost me about 20 points.
Wilson was a complete fail and expected a good return from him - he blanked in every game.
Bringing in and then benching Milivojevic for 2 GWs in a row when he scored.
A dismal triple captaincy on yellow flagged Kane who got 3 points.

In hindsight, I think I got carried away trying to be 'different' after Xmas. I went too maverick with some of my decisions when I needed to chill out and play it safer. Not getting Aguero was a killer though, as this would have fit my strategy perfectly - especially as I took a -8 to bring in Lingard, Pope (and others) who ultimately were really bad decisions.

It's a bit like playing poker when you have a lot more chips than everyone else and start playing completely differently. I think because it's quite rare for me to be doing so well at Xmas I didn't really know how to play! Definitely some lessons to be learned.

Been my best season ever in 10 years. Been as high as 37 but slipped back a little this week as people have played their TC. Even if one of the popular TC choices goes crazy still have enough pts in bank to guarantee a top 500 which would be my best ever.

            Good: Salah from beginning
Been very lucky with captaincy choices.
            Played with gut.
Taken hits (64pts) but nearly always as part of a long-term planning (players coming in at least for 3 or games) and a lot due to injury/suspension.
Hit Aguero at the beginning of his run and captained him only for his hauls (luck)
Started Lukaku over Kane. Figured Utd would start strong (though he went after a pen miss and 0pt captaincy)
Started DDG then went to Pope. Good keeper pts for much of season.
Good start enabled late 1st WC (GW16) which allowed for a fixture switch and set-up for Xmas period.

Cons: Never been this high and "froze" last few weeks over-thinking things. e.g. free hit - knew Lacazette would probably be starting. Didn't think he'd do much and that Auba would come on for him with Europe in mind. Sub didn't happen that way and Laca hauled but mainly because Auba changed the game. Followed the crowd and i'd have been top 20.
TC blown GW22 on Kane. Wasn't sure about Swansea game but figured he catch up against a West Ham defence that hadn't been keeping CSs particularly away from home.
Every season I miss a bandwagon player or 2. This season just couldn't see Shaqiri.
Played a decent bench on paper all season but had nothing in terms of autosub pts.

Great Stuff. Best of luck for these remaining set of fixtures. Go get the Top 100 (If Possible)

Very Satisfied my performance this year. It's only my 3rd year playing FPL. Finsihed 18k last year and currently sitting at 4k. All Mini Leagues settled except one where I have a 10 point lead and Rival has TC'd Kane and I have Jesus(c).

When you ask what went well, it was the time period from GW19-GW27 where I moved from 66k to 1k, and the major decisions that helped with this were not falling for the first Kanexit trap and in this very time period, I did follow the Kanexit 2.0 and went Aguero over Kane from GW24-GW27 and bagged in his 8 goals, plus making full use of the heavy back-line of Alonso, Otamendi & Jones really helped in defensive returns every week. The value picks like Firmino & Sterling require no mention. Had Hazard at the right times. Had Salah since GW1 and went without him for just 2 Gameweeks up untill GW33 where I got rid and now probably will get back for GW38.

So I was smelling Top 1k by GW27 then dropped to 10k by GW34 as I tried to follow the template too much, faced injuries and the 2nd Wildcard did not help much. It has to be highlighted that the Free Hit chip helped massively to gain back ground as my OR went from 10k -> 4k.

Finally, the thing that needs to be mentioned is the captaincy pick as from GW18 till now, my captain has only blanked once which was Kane in GW30 where he got injured after playing 33 mins (And did not look the same again). G-Whizz's DS Stats Hot Topic has largely influenced my captaincy decision which I think has to be highlighted here.

Best of luck DAVEBENSONPHILIPS for the remaing matches of GW37 and GW38. Cheers.

            Very disappointing season so far.
Did well last year in my first season finishing 500k after starting 3 weeks late.
Taking too many unnecessary hits has been the biggest mistake for me. Spent 108 points in hits so far. Captained Kane for a lot of his blanks, and sold him out just before the double hatties. Sitting at 200 k currently. But,with BB active and a decent 38 team, hoping for a top 100 k finish.
Will look to improve next season. Reducing the unnecessary hits and nailing more captains will surely help.

I finished top 5k in my first serious season playing FPL last year. I'll be lucky to finish top 200k this season. I've played similarly and put the same amount of time in. The three main reason I probably are:
            1. Being late to the Salah party.
            2. Not having a bit of patience with Firminho at the start.
            3. Probably the main one this. I held onto two assets for way too long as they blankety blanked, namely Sane + Alli.

I've been consistently doing very well all season and reached a high if overall rank of 36. Was in top 1k for months and top of my mini league for 90% of the season. My issue? Changing my tactics to prevent my rival from catching me and that has led to some awful decisions and him being from over 100 points behind to just 40.

Long story short I just have just carried on the way that was winning...

            What a season!
Pep's rotation between Aguero and Gabriel, Aguero is my top front man. Pep kept switching them up, I think this some how affected Aguero but still there was some positives.
Undermining Salah, I didn't sign him from the go.
Missing out on signing KDB earlier.
            Poor captain calls.
            Missing using my wildcard chips.
Playing risky does hurt, taking -40 hit.

            The good.
Did well in the cup, managed to beat 7 teams, this has never happened in my FPL history. I would be knocked out by the second team.
Won the draft head to head before GW 38.
Let me wait for the this the end of this GW 37, miracles do happen.

Im happy with my season. On 2.1k overall so far, will win a couple of my mini leagues.

            Good:
            - Didnt have Kane for most of the season. Even when I didnt have him and he scored back to back hat trick I got 2 GW scores of 100k.
            - Playing most of the season with 4 good defenders. I will be tempted to do the same next year.

            Bad:
            - Horrible start with to many unsure starters like Iwobi, Danilo and Moreno. Will play with more assured starters next year.

Good: captain picks, differentials from GW6-16, patience with transfers
Bad: missing out on so many bandwagons thus such a low TV, and also my rank dropping as a result of injuries/rotation unexpectedly, and I'm too scared to take more than a -8 to get the team I actually want

4 points is nothing. Get the player you think will score the most. So yes, get Salah

Congrats to the new FFS team members. I only recognise Geoff from the community but I'm sure they'll all add their own stamp on things. Looking forward to the off season for once!

Hope this doesn't hike the price of membership too much.
