Dugout Discussion – Swansea vs Southampton

The first of six extra fixtures in Double Gameweek 37 gets underway tonight as Swansea and Southampton go head-to-head in a crucial relegation battle at the Liberty Stadium.

From a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective, Jordan Ayew and Dusan Tadic were the main draws ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

Both will be looking to atone for weekend blanks against Bournemouth and Everton respectively.

The fifth most bought player, Ayew earned over 145,000 new owners on the back of five goals in 14 starts under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.

With each of his last three strikes arriving at home, the Swansea striker welcomes a defence that have mustered just two clean sheets in their last 16 road trips.

Ayew was captained by 5,915 FPL managers for Double Gameweek 37, with 126 playing their Triple Captain chip.

Meanwhile, Tadic was eighth for transfers in (107,000+), having supplied three goals and 27 points in three appearances prior to the draw at Goodison.

Just 1,829 have handed the Saints’ playmaker the armband, yet he’s proven more popular than Ayew for the Triple Captain chip, backed by 206 FPL managers.

Mark Hughes’ men have scored in four of their last five – including two goals against both Chelsea and Arsenal – and will face a defence with two shutouts in 12 attempts.

There’s good news for the 19,000+ who drafted in frontman Charlie Austin for Southampton’s pair of fixtures as he’s handed a third successive league start by the new man in charge.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

It's been a meh season, the weeks I've done well are the weeks I haven't had the strongest team, and when my lineup is stacked, my players found ways to blank...very frustrating

Kane(TC) vs. NUFC is going to be strange viewing tonight! Least we are safe and nothing to play for really!

Hoping for a 4-3 Newcastle (Kane Hatrick) 😀

From a Newcastle perspective how do you see this game going Rafa?

I’ve had anxiety all week about us throwing Top 4. Looking at Newcastle and Leicesters recent form I’m hoping for a Spurs response and a big win.

Depends if he puts a few more fringe players in like Saturday or reverts back to our best 11! I think he will do the latter as we are on a little bad run now!... As a Kane(TC) owner an early goal for him would probably open things up! Can see a draw personally

Do we feel TAA will play at home to Brighton in GW38? Gomez injured and Clyne was benched last game so TAA is clearly preferred at RB.

Great ceiling and clean potential for a 4.4 Def.

Lingard Mawson DDG -> Arnie PvA 4.8gk (-8)

    Team would be:
    Fab
    Ota Mustafi PvA
    Eriksen Salah Sterling Arnie

Has this been the most boring season of FPL yet?

With few options up top over the season due to various injuries (Kane, Aguero, Morata at certain times), and a distinct lack of budget options leading to the high ownerships of Vardy/Firmino, and the emergence of a template midfield quite early, it seems there's been little chance for real innovation.

Add into this a fairly obvious set of chip tactics, and it's been a lot of treading water.

I think the Free Hit chip has shaken it up a bit - but can see that adding to the sense of malaise over the years - means will be used by most around double and blank Gameweeks so the same template and predictability will emerge.

There's a good article over in the community section looking at how Scandinavian versions of FPL are shaking up the game.

For me the key element of change that is needed is first and second half chips - forces people to play some in single gameweeks.

I don't think there's any way veterans will not play their chips around double and blank gameweeks but would be good to have other places in the season where they have to be played too.

I've enjoyed this season as a whole - been lots of chance to get some nice differential points - eg Milivojevic and Cedric. But must admit have wanted it to end for the last few weeks.

For me that's the key enjoyment of FPL. Anyone can captain Suarez or Salah every week. When those cheap low owned gems get points that really stand outs.

I remember Sessegnon and Cuellar's dgwk points far more than I remember any of my Suarez's captaincies.

The thing for me is that means we have 6 chips and 2 WCs.. 8 of 38 weeks with a chip feels like a whole lot.

I'd almost prefer to see it go the other way. The WC helps people get a template team so going down to one, or even a 'change 4 players' chip or something.

Overall though, template comes down to who is performing and what their prices are

Perhaps the removal of one chip per GW would help shake things up a little. Exclude the Wc's and allow us to use upto 2 in one week, like TC and BB together. This would help offer a little more diversity to the game.

Also the chips before Christmas is a good idea. They're would be no real strategy available as any week could be gold for you to TC or FH or BB but it could also cost you dearly.

Would involve alot more planning too as decisions you make on your 1st WC would be affected by how you plan to use FH and BB

I don't think this season is more boring than before. I'm having fun in this game since the very first fantasy season 06/07. Each season is more and more challenging to me, as the data analysis and prediction model are doing better and better by FFS and some other sites. Everybody can use them so conveniently now. It forces me to do a lot more study to beat the crowd nowadays. I have been in top 200 OR in 3 out of my first 4 seasons, and I would say those years were much more boring than now.

I think the fact that I've had a dreadful season (coupled with the worst bench boost this week ever for me) has made it painful, which is a bit shallow. But things do seem stale.

I think the 3rd striker market being pretty much a non-starter hasn't helped. Normally you get a few options down there but its been such slim pickings. I think I'm going to start with a 3-5-2 next season

I found the first half of the season really fun, the second half was a little more dull but I still always enjoy it.

During the first half I feel there was more scope for calculated differentials (Hazard and Alonso for me, Coutinho etc for others).

Second half the template developed, which has made it difficult to do well and try and find value-adds over the template. Since I haven't seen better options than the template during the second half, I've pretty much had to pick the template which has actually performed pretty poorly.

Good point. I mention TopMarx's HOF top 5 articles in my comment below, but another thing i remember from them is that the best gains were made by the group from weeks 6 to 16. Since then, aside from the free hit week in GW35, its been stagnant and template based for most as you say.

Which basically means that the whole season was a sprint to Gameweek 16, which basically determined your finishing rank, or close to it, at that point.

        1. JasonG123
          • 10 Years

I got to 5800 by GW22 and am now still languishing around 2110, and I've just been fluctuating between 1000 to 10,000 since GW22.

I've never been as high as 5800 by GW22 but at the same time I'm likely going to have my lowest finish over the last 4 seasons (2014/15: 548, 2015/16: 788 and 2016/17: 1558). In all of those seasons I was ranked outside the top 10k by GW30 and then came roaring home with the double game weeks and blanks (and I think my highest rank of the season was my final rank in all seasons).

Complete opposite this season - as Jonty said in the scout cast: in all those seasons I would've liked the season to last 50 game weeks as I was continually making gains, in this season I wanted it to end a couple weeks ago after the GW35 free hit.

It's been the opposite for me. Slow and steady improvements each month.
            Gw9 top 200k
            Gw15 top 50k
            Gw23 top 10k
            Gw32 top 2k
            Highest rank gw35 at 230

              That's really interesting.

Not really just listened to scout cast every week and followed their advice. I kanexited at one point and Salah exited too. But mostly a conservative low hit approach

            Impressive history 🙂

Totally agree. I'm nowhere near as good as player as you, but the patterns are the same. Fluctuated from 600k to 100k from GW1 to GW37 lol. Some bad decisions and bad luck in the first half a season cast me into that mid ranked group, and its been a struggle since then to climb.

Last season end was very similart to yours, scored about 400 in the last 4 gameweeks last season to come from nowhere to the money positions in a couple of mini leagues i'm in. That was great fun! Apart from the free hit week where I halved my rank, since GW32, a period of the season I normally relish, I've continued to tread water. I'm going to double my rank this week too lol and end up back where I started!

              Cheers.

I think with the GW32 the player that I could have looked for a differential over was Willian. I didn't feel that good about him at the time but went with him anyway because of groupthink. Think I could have gone for Eriksen there and raised funds somewhere else (it probably would've been Lukaku to Vardy or Alonso to Smalling which would've worked out well). Just making those couple of small changes would've dramatically improved the end of my season.

I remember someone in the top 200 was asking for differentials around the GW32 WC and I recommended Eriksen to him - should've followed my own advice there.

Yeah Zaha or even Arnie over Willian would have worked out better. But at the time I wildcarded, Willian had just been MOTM against Barcelona, scored over 20 point in 3 gameweeks and was playing 90 mins regularly. I was delighted to be getting him in. And even though his stats remained good, his output dropped, Conte changed formation and he wound up dropped.

Eriksen was also a good pick. But again, when we wildcarded, Son had just managed back to back hauls, was cheaper, and was playing up front with Kane ruled out for 6 weeks. That was hard to ignore. As it happens, Kane has come back and been absolutely useless. It would have been better all round if he had been out for 6 weeks!

Boring, no. Did it suit a dullard playing style based around a core of season keepers? Yes.

Owning Salah, Sterling, Kane, Otamendi, Azpilicueta, De Gea, Burnley def/pope, Firmino, Eriksen for most of the season would have got you a high rank I believe.

If you look at the articles by TopMarx on the HOF top 5, their transfer success rate is pitiful. And these are guys with some of the best judgement in the game! Jumping off and on players this season was very difficult to judge, time correctly, and be successful with.

I don't know how many transfers those guys made, but if I take a hit before next GW I average 1hit pr. GW (-152 in total this season).

Currently 12K OR, and I actually feel most o my transfers paid off within a GW or two.
Having said that I will try to limit my transfers next season for sure.

If this season were boring then I can't w8 till the next begins!

This is my first season, and I had a great deal of fun - still am.
The part I liked the most is how my rank improved by the week due to the GW32 & 33 WC template.
I used TC in GW34, WC in 35 and BB this GW. That has really paid off by a mile compared to those with the template doing WC32/33, BB 34 and TC 37.

Would it be boring if you'd ignored the template WC team and gone a little more left wing at the end of the season. Getting Zaha and PVA in on gw32 would WC would have made the end of the season much more exciting instead so many of us went for players that weren't even nailed on in the squad just because their team had 2 dgws so I think we ourselves to this boring finale.

The guy in 2nd place captaining Auba for example, I'm sure he thinks this season has been very exciting.

WC'ing the likes of Son, Mahrez, Morgan, Alonso, DeGea and Willian into teams was obviously a fail and will lean people towards saying this season was boring but it was their decisions that made it boring. If they'd all have delivered in the doubles like we'd hoped, maybe people wouldn't have this outlook on the season.

        I agree 100%
After Mahrez, Vardy, Morgan, Son, Alonso, Willian, Lingard, Salah and even Kane were locked in your WC-team in 32/33 you sealed your season. No way not to lose ground unless you took some massive hits.

Yer worse season in 11 years of playing. Although I got bored the last 2 also near the end. It's the chips they have killed a lot of the enjoyment for me and also the inconsistencies of FPL. They not even hard decisions they are getting wrong.

I'll definatly play next season but I'm not spending much time on it. Not worth it because it's a lottery as soon as gw31 arrives

    19. Runaway

I agree that it was the most boring season ever for me but I think it is not because of the chips. Just look at the EOs of GW37 (for top 10K), it tells a lot:

      Manu defender: %119
Kane: %171 (%137 without TC effect)
Jesus: %116 (%104 without TC effect)
Sterling: %103.5 (%98 without TC effect)

This practically leaves you with just 7 players (most of which are template again). Assuming you captain one of those above, you should expect 3 of your players to fail to climb in the rankings. This is not fun! It has never happened before. Maybe 1 or at most 2 players in the same time would exceed the %100 EO, you would captain one of them and wait for the other to fail which is more acceptable.

It was not different before GW37 either. Salah, Kane and ManU defence have been around/above %100, Sterling around %80, Chelsea defence %70, Otamendi %60 sometimes etc. It was more or less like this through the second half of the season.

I think that the biggest reason of this happening is the increasing awareness of fantasy players not the nature of the season. I believe that there were some seasons providing more limited group of players that guides you a more template team such as the season of Suarez (C), Ramsey, Yaya.

I disagree that chips are killing the game. They are even making it more fun. Only excitement of this season (2nd half though) was planning DGWs, BGWs with all of those chips first deciding between FH31-FH35 then WC32-WC33-WC36 or BB34-BB37. It was much more straightforward last year: most of the people made WC36, BB37 and that worked perfectly for everybody.

Absolutely. This season has been awful; floundering between the 150-300k mark pretty much the entire season. Any risks to try and break into the top 100k inevitably backfires and you lose more ground, meaning you then go to the boring template to try and claw it back. (Speaking of which, this season has been more template than ever before).

DGWs have been horrendous too, saving chips all season and planning for them, only for them to be pretty terrible points-wise. Meanwhile, 'casuals' or ML rivals lump their chips on random weeks and get rewarded with TC Salah hat tricks or whatever.

Awful season, can't end quick enough.

the final third has been the most boring by a mile. i admit. I blame the stockpiling of the chips and largely rubbish double gameweeks for this.

but still, it's been better than the season when suarez, ramsey and sterling smashed it and everyone could basically afford the same team for like 95m

I think the most telling stat this season is my current rank is 53k and I really haven't, at any stage, felt I've had a good year

it has become easier than ever to get into the top 100k thanks to sites likes this and the chips - even when they don't work that well as they have this year!

I won't be using this site next year - which is meant as no disrespect to anything here - I just want to not be swayed by templates etc anymore and pick my own team each week - might not do as well, but it makes it a lot more fun

Not really since the most expensive player has been on and off throughout the season
      Salah reaching incredible heights
Going from Premium performing defenders to a cheap backline
Free Hit giving real boost to ranks
People who caught those Aguero and Hazard hauls and early Mahrez and Arnie hauls really did well

We get the same complaint every year, that all teams are the same after Christmas. But it isn't really true - very few of them are identical; they may contain a core of popular players in common, but there are always alternatives for the rest of the squad, and they don't all make the same transfers and captaincy and benching choices.

Double game-weeks have always been a feature of the game that experienced players take advantage of, even before the advent of second wildcards and the newer chips.

And it isn't essential to stick to the FFS template in order to be successful.
For example, Bharat Dhody (long-time world number one) rejected the standard 3-4-3 and spent more on defence, using formations with 4 at the back and a non-playing third forward.
And Shirin Nizar (long-time leader of the January to May League, back up to 2nd in Jay's The home stretch and currently 78th overall) ignored the standard chip strategy and instead played FH in GW31, TC in GW34, WC in GW35 and BB in GW37.

      • 10 Years
      6 years, 10 hours ago

I've quite enjoyed it but then I've gone through a huge cycle of mids and third forwards and rarely get swayed by the template (Gross one I've never owned). And as Jonty says above its those little differentials you remember for better or worse.

I've fielded midfielders from 15 different clubs and forwards from 12 so far this season. Of the non premium players Arnie, Zaha, Shaq, Ramsey, Richarlison, JRod, Tammy & Wilson all roll off the tongue as relatively differential players I've had at different points of the season.

Add into this I chose to avoid BB34 and playedy free hit in the double instead, you get out what you put in if you're looking for excitement.

Can we trust Palace? Or most importantly, is it fair to assume (WBA) is actually an easy fixture? West Brom are now officially relegated, but they have been practically relegated for a long time now, even before Moore took charge. Some would argue they got relegated the moment Pardew took charge. 🙂 Anyway...
Only an incredible turn of events, their good form and lucky results in other games POSTPONED WBA getting relegated, but I don’t think their mindset will suddenly change now that it is official.
Under Moore they have proved to be one of the most solid sides in the league, even though chances of staying up were always close to zero.
They are in form, team morale seems to be high and I doubt they will roll over only because it’s now officially done - should we perhaps target players facing teams on the beach (Watford, Everton etc), instead of those playing vs WBA?

This is the reason I got Arnie over Zaha last week. Stoke was always going to be a right game and West Brom are like 3rd in the table since Moore took charge. He isn't gonna send them into the field with anything but a final win in mind.

West Brom are the reason I didn't TC Harry Kane and are the reason I won't be getting any Palace players in for the final gameweek

Scoutcast mentioned Harry Kane was facing the worst side in the league last weekend. That was not the case at all. Beat United, drew with Pool. Why were they suddenly gonna get beaten by Spurs? They won't roll over for Palace and they'll definetly want to win the final game of the season

Totally agree with this. WBA have been relegated effectively for a long time already, dont think the official relegation really changes much. Palace in good form also though, but dont see them score more than 1 or maybe 2 goals. I'll aviod.

Yes. Important game for Chelsea, I expect 3 forwards to start inc Hazard.

Is Son, Sterling > Salah(c), Zaha for -4 crazy?
Think that Son and Sterling may not start in 38.

The case for gw1 bench boost

With all the moans about template chip strategies and lack of innovation I thought I'd just throw this one in. The bench boost chip is definitely a strong option for a dgw for obvious reasons but it does also potentially mess up your team structure/require hits to get the most out of it. So for my relatively successfully bench boost in gw37, I got 24 points, but also meant probably taking 4-8 points hits and using up 1m in team value that I could have used/wasted elsewhere. And that was with being more thrifty (A King) than others who had an extra 1.7m tied up in a single player who was likely to be an unplayed sub the rest of the time. Also not playing TC this week which may be a blessing in disguise but could have/still hit me hard. So 5 reasons to consider week 1 bench boost:

    1) A lot will wildcard early on so gives you a chance to almost have a equally balanced 15 players (eg not just restricted to sub 4.5m subs) and get team structure back to focus investment on 11+1 starters for the remainder of the season rather than carrying expensive 3rd subs

    2) Lots of price changes (particularly low-mid price players rising) in first few weeks means that spreading across 15 potential good players (rather than those who may lose value quickly as may not even play) is a decent tactic for building team value for the rest of the season, of which 0.1m is worth about 4 points at the early stages so not to be sniffed at

    3) Likewise, the start of the season is fairly unpredictable so having a few options of where to downgrade and upgrade is good option rather than needing to pick 1 winner in week 1.

    3) Crap teams (eg promoted like Huddersfield /Hull etc) often do well early in seasons so good chance of cheap players getting returns

    4) Allows a clearer strategy and maximum funds for staying 11(+1) in the season run in rather than having to make transfers for subs which you'd usually never bother with, and potentially frees up a premium dgw for free hit/TC which could get you as many or more points than use of bb

    5) Psychologically, you get ahead of the field which means others chasing in mini leagues etc more likely to take risky (ie poor) decisions to catch up (even if towards end of season)

I'm not saying this is THE tactic to take, but just opening up that it could be A justifiable approach if want to think a bit differently. Interested in any other more leftfield tactics to make next season a bit different...

      Reason for not BBing GW1:

      1) I have 31 points from my BB this week with 3 games to play

Nah, you're just being different for difference sake.
BB is about maximising your 15 player squad, why pick possibly the most uncertain gameweek (38 being the other) for line-ups to play it.
      Thanks but no thanks.
