Fantasy Football Book Launch

We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it will be out on Thursday, July 26, to plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

And to give you a taste of what you can expect, we’re planning to publish an exclusive extract for newsletter subscribers in the very near future.

The start was promising though. And he was brilliant at Hull too. Needs to be given a full season at Everton to prove himself.

We were not in the relegation zone when he took over.

The performances have been embarrassing at points - the tactics against Arsenal and City were nothing short of bizarre. We won't progress with him and the fans really don't like him.

He was never going to last longer than the end of the season - we gave him a longer deal because he wouldn't take a season long one.

Stupidity IMO. Only the top 6 can play 'good' football. Everyone else is in a relegation fight and need results over style. Looking forward to seeing Everton in a relegation fight with Marco Silva at the helm.....

Teams outside the 6 can play 'good' football, and teams inside the top 6 can play 'bad' football. There isn't one way to play based on league position. I would have thought watching the Premier League, and especially other top European leagues, would have demonstrated that.

We also spent over £150 million in the summer, and a subsequent 40? ish in January. The squad has problems but there is talent in the group. We also need a manager who can get the best out of the likes of Lookman and Holgate - not a manager who will let them go so they can impress suitors elsewhere.

Everton are ambitious side now with money - we will challenge for the 6th/7th next season and look to build going forward, with a manager who can play vibrant attacking football.

Biggest lesson I learned from last season (my first with FPL) was to take less points hits. I did marginally better this year (some 100 points or so). I also tried being more consistent with my captaincy choices - just because someone blanks one week does not mean they will blank the next. Biggest regret was selling Harry Kane before the first Liverpool game.

Guessing who my rivals would captain and covering them for easy-ish games rather than going rogue was also helpful but then everyone in my ML had Salah and would captain him weekly so that became an easier decision.

    Looking through some stats...

    2016/17:
    (C) Total Points - 577
    (VC) Total Points - 478

    2017/18:
    (C) Total Points - 500
    (VC) Total Points - 600

    The Salah Effect.

Interestingly my total possible captain points if I always captained highest scorer was 978 in both seasons.

If your Goalkeeper plays 0 minutes in the Gameweek, he will be substituted by your replacement Goalkeeper, if he played in the Gameweek.

Need a playing 2nd GK to cover the 0 minute part.

I agree. I think it's a bit ridiculous. Some without a playing second keeper actually got the -1. Should have been treated as a zero given he wasn't part of the match at any time.

I won my mini league in my 8thattempt. I’ve came 4th, 5th, 6th,9th, 11th, 11th, 17th last season as stopped trying and this year 1st. It’s a strong league with guys finishing in the top 1,000 previously.

I went the whole season without Kane and finished 80k. Poor final gameweek but I’m super chuffed. They think I used a subscription but I didn’t. I just refused to take 4 point hits until the end of the season searched for bonus points. I won the league because I had the most bonus points.

I won £225 and bragging rights, but how can you break the top 1,000? What is regarded a strong position? I always felt too 200 k was good

one of the reasons 352 was such a favoured formation this year was the complete lack of a decent striker below vardys 8.5million.

there was plenty of players who had good runs but getting them at the right time required luck and then cost you a transfer when they dried up.

very frustrating to own. through the season we had:

mounie, Abraham, niasse, DCL, depoitre, jayew, wilson, barnes, wood, Perez and i’m sure there’s more

they all had purple patches, but overall was easier to get the value players in midfield and defence who delevired steadily over the season

Pretty sure I'll just completely ignore this bracket next season...unless Austin is 6.0 again. 1 or 2 heavies and a cheapie. Would be great if we had a viable playing 5.0 striker next season, even just for 2pts a week fodder.

    2. Markus

Good observation. I think the formation shifts where for many teams 2 of their 3 forward players players are actually midfielders, plus likes of zaha/arnie playing oop. If same classifications next year and a few defenders actually start to hold down a consistent starting berth I could see the argument for 451 to max value, especially if perma-captain salah eg:
      Ddg
      Alonso Walker/Ota Robertson Vert
Salah (c) Sterling Arnie Zaha Erikson
      Vardy

I had a successful period this season with 4-5-1 but shifted to 352 when firmino took off.

one lesson i might take through is to remain flexible, this year we had periods where premium defenders ruled, then it seemed we had lots of striker options when morata and lukaku looked viable and finally we had the power 5 in midfield.

so maybe the key is to look to be ahead of the curve and don’t remain rigid in your formation

    3. XabiAlonso

The dream team for the season was 352 with Kane and vardy up front.
The top defenders still scored less than mids. Statistico gives me an average for playlng 352 this season as 63 pts for 17 matches. Only 54 pts for 19 matches of 343

The winner started with a 352 and got off to a great start. He had no 4.5 midfielder so had extras on the bench. Great strategy, or was it?
It worked because he went without Kane and stole a march on all the Kane owners as he failed to register his owners any points.
However had Kane fired up it would have been a very different story and the ineficient structure would have made bring Kane in difficult.

Can you come up with a better dead team squad?

    De Gea (5.5m)
    Azpi (6.5m) - Otamendi (5.5m) - Alonso (7.0m)
    Salah (9.0m) - Sterling (8.0m) - KDB (10.0m) - Gross (5.5m) - Eriksen (9.5m)
    Vardy (8.5m) - Firmino (8.5m)

    Bench = 4.0m GK, 4.0m DEF, 4.0m DEF, 4.5m FWD

    GK = 172 pts
    DEF = 496 pts
    MID = 1,104 pts
    FWD = 364 pts
    Salah(c) = 303 pts

Total points (assuming no auto-subs, Salah permanent captain and no chips) = 2,439pts

Wow how's this for FPL woe. My brother is in a 1v1 head to head league with his best mate. He had a great start to the season (was ranked 7th overall at a point in November) but he lost 11 of the final 13 GWs and it finished 19-19, then losing on points difference....by 3 points. 😆 : lol:

Yeah I remember reading about this at the start of season.

Genuinely scary how high it got. Will have to look at the team to see how it handled chips...I'm sure that might have been it's downfall.

Also I doubt it factors in team news so it probably could have gone even higher.

OR is around 30k, which is not bad by the way.

How can Manchester United close the gap to Manchester City?

This is probably their best XI and bench on paper.

          de Gea
          Valencia - Bailly - Jones - Young
          Lingard - Matic - Pogba
          Sanchez - Lukaku - Martial

Romero Smalling Shaw Herrera McTominay Mata Rashford

I personally think they're in desperate need for a world class central midfielder who links the midfield to attack and makes things happen at pace, with efficiency. Given their style of the play, this would have to be a player who's very disciplined in their positioning off the ball but also very good at receiving the ball on the half turn and opening a defence with a killer pass. They're heavily linked with Milinkovic-Savic, who is just flipping brilliant.

And if as expected, Martial leaves then we can safely assume they'll be after an attacker too. Perhaps they've learnt their, what seems on the face of it, mistake with Sanchez and opt to move for a younger player who's more hungry to succeed. I haven't seen any names apart from Bale, but I'm not sure how much substance those rumours have and he perhaps would fall into the Sanchez category too. I personally think someone like Riyad Mahrez would be a great move for them.

I agree that a CM is needed. I think a new LB should be a priority too, Alex Sandro maybe? Also another CB as a few will probably be leaving.

Mourinho seems to like to pick a starting 11 and stick to it - I think Rashford or Lingard could make it into that 11 but Mou needs to decide what he wants to do up front and stick to it. That probably means bringing someone in

This. But that's not gonna happen. Mourinho's excuse for this season was City's extraordinary season. What will he say if City starts the next season with, let's say 7 wins in a row ? Then Utd will be in real trouble, he will start blaming his players and they will end up something like Chelsea in his last season...

This is exactly what I think will happen next season. Constant negativity in the face of setbacks/ lack of success only leads to more of the same. There's only so many times you can publicly call out your players as scapegoats before they (and everybody else) realise you are just being a bitter bell end!

Agree completely. With the talent he had, he played defensive , boring football. The likes of Sanchez,Pogba , and Jones were shadows of their former selves. Bringing in more talent isnt the answer, The game has passed him by.

This is exactly what’s needed. It will take years to recover from the damage that Mou is doing in blocking off the development of younger players by bringing in his 28/29 year old established players. The likes of Martial will leave and become stars elsewhere.

lot of talent at Utd - just doesn't seem to fit into Jose's gameplan.
Need a play maker and don't buy another one and stick him on the wing. Sanchez isn't a 10, Jose didn't rate/try Mikhi or Mata as a 10.

One of the obvious things I've seen when watching Utd is an inability to get the ball in the box to Lukaku. Crossing been woeful at times and speed of the ball into Lukaku often painfully slow.

Don't think Sanchez was the right answer either. His passing & decision-making when he drifts into the middle was nowhere near good enough last season

Think it's a team thing. Rashford, martial, Sanchez too often take the wrong option. Normally a selfish one.
Valencia usually offers good service when he plays. Not convinced by Young - too often delays getting ball into the right areas. Mainly when he's checking back onto right foot.
Still have to think taking the shackles off Pogba could make a big difference more often

If they aren't playing shaw then an actual left back. Probably a younger RB too.

CM is a problem. I think pogba is the creative one you say they need, he just needs to be released to play that way. Matic is the holding player, they need someone in between. A real box to box workhorse with decent skill to back it all up. A naingolan type

I think it comes down to management.
Man U & Chelsea performances have reflected their managers negativity this season.
In comparison Man C & Liverpool have excelled & play with freedom due to positive man management.
Jose's slating of individual players has contributed to them playing with fear rather than confidence.
He would destroy Mahrez as he has done with Martial.

The gap will get bigger if they lose DDG.

An FA Cup win will paper over the cracks but it will feel like a tinfoil cup if Liverpool win the CL after City winning the league.

They need two new FBs and someone like Keita. oh wait

Mourinho hates losing so much that he sets his team up not to lose. And that's fine - he rarely does, but when your main rival is not dropping points at all then winning 2/3 isn't good enough. He will never beat Pep unless there is a major player revolt or something. The winning mentality just isn't there. Mourinho was much better suited to managing in Italy where matches are cagier, more chess-like affairs.

We need to start playing offensively and Pogba should now be made captain. Offer DDG a nee bumper deal. We need to get rid of Mourinho, Lu-cack-u and Gashford. We need to bring in Neymar, Bale and that midfielder Berb said is brilliant. We need to bring back that Utd winning mindset

Keeping DDG out of Real's clutches and signing Milinkovic-Savic whose brilliant, another giant that Jose loves and attainable so that's a great start.

Lukaku and Rashford are fine it's the wide players that need improving but that's not Jose's forte.
