FFS Cup

Fantasy Football Scout Cup – Winner

We can now reveal who has won our Fantasy Premier League cup following Gameweek 38’s dramatic final.

2Eyed Turk (rank 30,382) will join TH14, donnellyc, Gribude, Ninja_Fit_Saints, Wild Rover, Mark, A Manager Has No Name, Sleepysi and myself among the list of previous winners after a closely fought final against 17,402 placed Boxing Can Girouds.

He prevailed by just a single point (53-52) after making a successful double points hit. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey and West Brom keeper Ben Foster all came in, with Salah handed the captaincy.

This proved a crucial decision in affecting the outcome. The trio scored a combined 19 points, whereas the players they replaced – Spurs midfielder Dele Alli and Manchester United duo David De Gea and Jesse Lingard – earned just a solitary point between them after succumbing to rotation.

Boxing Can Girouds’ points hit proved less successful, with new recruits Wilfried Zaha and Roberto Firmino scoring 12 points between them, two less than Leicester striker Jamie Vardy and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, who made way. His downfall was cemented by the bold decision to ignore Salah and hand the armband to Firmino, who, unlike the Egyptian, failed to register any attacking returns.

Despite earning double-digit points hauls from Zaha, West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic and Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Boxing Can Girouds’ unsuccessful attempt to find a differential option among Liverpool’s ranks was decisive.

Congratulations to 2Eyed Turk, who wins a £150 Amazon voucher and Boxing Can Giroud can still hold his head up high after a remarkable Cup run, in which he earns a £100 Amazon voucher.

The third place play off final was another close contest, with 2,077 ranked Batmaniac beating 17,070 placed Pete’s Blair (69-63) and winning a £50 Amazon voucher. His points hit to bring in Arnautovic and Liverpool stopper Loris Karius for Chelsea’s benched midfielder Willian and the non-playing De Gea proved canny.

Pete’s Blair also profited from his points hit swoop for Salah and Reds centre back Virgil Van Dijk for Vincent Kompany, who failed to make the pitch, and Eden Hazard, who suffered a disappointing final day defeat at St James’ Park to Newcastle. However, these smart moves were not enough to overcome Pete by the end of Sunday’s matches.

Just posting this for a second time in the DZ.
I’ll be going to Uganda next week to set up a school, orphanage and playing fields.
Some very valid questions and statements were made. Mostly the concerns of the conditions of orphanages in Uganda. This is exactly why we’re doing this, to start a new wave of such places, somewhere children can be motivated and focused instead of the hell holes that do exist.
Even if you have £10 to spare it would be appreciated.
If any concerns, please write here or email me rupert_lovibond@yahoo.co.uk

Rupert, most people who do good things don’t feel the need to tell everyone about it nor fund raise, particularly if said person already has a bit of cash to his name and could fund it themselves.

Not hating on you or anything but you are sounding like smashie and nicey

You would feel a lot better if you just did the good deed IMO

On another note the Guardian article was quite disturbing and having myself spent a bit of time in Uganda over the past 20 odd years I don’t think you can guarantee anything I am afraid

I’m not a person that earns a good wage at all, minimum wage in fact.
I’m just posting this as I really want to do this, and if anyone wants to help it would be really appreciated.
The Guardian article was indeed horrible, but this should be different.

Silver spoon I wish. I work 55+ hours a week and come from a poor family. My sisters are successful but I am not. Come to my pub if you’d like to see what I do for a living , but then, I don’t want to convince people I’m poor to be honest, it seems a bit weird.
Never been given any money by my parents. Not sure why you’re doing this.

I guess it depends whether you're trying to list the best player in each position individually or whether you're trying to go for players that would work the best together. If it's the latter, despite City's attack, I find it hard to see past the Liverpool trio of Salah, Firmino, Mane. They complemented each other so perfectly.

Twitter is, pardon my french, a waste of time. Such a toxic environment good only for screenshots to be shared on other social media platforms as we Google at its depravity. It's the chosen media platform of politicians for a reason, after all.

Think it was more to do he was asking for money for his work...when they were just basically fixtures dressed up in a pretty ribbon. Can't really hate on for that, if there's a willing market, so be it.

Given how dour the DGWs were (the first one especially), its clear how volatile this game is, so not sure they helped much.

I generally use twitter to follow my interests, so football, FPL, F1 etc.. I don't actually follow many people at all unless its directly connected to any of my interests.

I rarely interact (tweet) on it and that incudes replying to a tweet of someone else's, generally a lurker I suppose.

Was thinking of doing an article/analysis on how accurate/useful the spot the differential article was this season, as it caught my eye the amount of times the article opened with "here are our pick/picks from last week that did well", and whether their picks were worth getting for more than a week as well by seeing how they did over the period after they featured in the article.

Would anyone be interested in reading this?
And, does anyone have a better way of compiling them all than just trawling agonisingly back through the history of the site?

Question asked every year, but what would you like to see implemented/tweaked in FPL next year?

    I'd like:

The 'assists' to be a bit clearer, just go with OPTA?
BPS to be tweaked so you don't get as much of a minus for misplaced passes, shots off target etc.
2 sets of chips (one before Jan, the other after)

I really think they nailed the prices this year, best they've been since I played and loved the free hit chip.

Paid fantasy sports are gambling. Fantasy sports are derivatives of goal scorer markets and clean sheet markets. Piling on the complexity of a budget, transfers etc doesn't take away from this core fact.

Assists and Key contributions combined to ensure 3pts is awarded for every goal, as far as possible (more pts = more fun).

One more chip, (4 in total), and 2 must be used first half, 2 must be used 2nd half but free to choose which 2. Would lead to great variation in chip strategy. Don't like the idea of simply doubling up the chips we currently have as this won't shake up the end of season run in at all, just make the first half slightly more interesting.

Mini-league organisers can close their leagues to new entries at any time if they wish to.
No reason why all mini-leagues should be forced to have the same time-limits.
But new teams entering late ought to be ineligible for weekly prizes.

Kane was just off the back of his 3rd 20+ goal season and 2x golden boot winner

I'm totally against having to use chips in the first half of the year, btw. It would just increase the element of chance even more if we HAD to use bench boost in random single GWs - you'd have some people get amazing luck with random penalty saves, defender goals and freak results etc.

I'd rather see chips out altogether before it came to two sets of chips.

Personally, I’d prefer one set of chips as it is, not 2.

Perhaps having 2 free hit chips would be good.

Also I don’t think goal scorers are incentivized enough when it comes to baps. Salah could score couple then gets zero bonus, doesn’t make much sense to me

Price changes somehow linked to overall ownership % and/or performance, rather than simply net transfers.

E.g. Sanchez was clearly not an £11.5M player this season, but his price stuck around that level all year as there wasn’t enough transfer movement to drive it down.

A point for assisting the assister would be good way to inject more points into the game. Also think they should go back to the last player on the same team to touch the ball before the scorer gets the assist. Of course it would lead to some jammy points, but that's more fun than the intended target debate.

      • Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

Wouldn't assisting the assister just end up with random sideways passes or hopeful hoofballs rewarded with points?

For every David Silva slicing the defence open with a pass, with Sane then assisting Sterling, there would be a Big Sam keeper kicking the ball as hard as he can before it's chester down into the path of a goalscorer. Or, say, Henderson making a sideways pass for Mane to dribble 30 yards and lay it on a plate for Salah. Wouldn't want to see that rewarded.

If anything I'd want fewer assist points, not more, just to clarify the confusion assists often cause.

        1. Baps to be tweaked things like yellow cards get punished and you already have -1 for it. Can end up 4 points less than if he hadn't been booked. That booking could've just broke up an attack that saved the game.
        2. Chips to be altered so they don't just get used in dgws. Maybe two lots like the wildcard, or none at all.

Go with OPTA will the lead to arguments over the OPTA definitions of assist.
But agree. Still do it to pass the buck.

I still argue to scrap the baps. Most times they go to someone who's scored, maybe assisted, or a clean sheet or pen save etc. But these things were already rewarded. It's just double rewarding. No need. Never been a fan of baps.

Obviously that won't happen so I'd go for this ... All chips can only be used on a regular gameweek where no side has 0 or 2 games.

The opponent would not know until the gameweek had concluded. If used against the opponents captain they just get the points that player would have got if they hadn't been captain

          1) Agree on assists
          2) Agree on BPS
          3) Disagree on chips - get rid of the DGWs - make them single GWs (one weekend, one midweek). That will test when you use your chips
          4) Disagree on prices - forwards need to be repriced to make them more competitive with midfielders

I want to add another price change system to the game, that would act independently of the current price changes.

The issue at hand is the overpricing of players who there's simply no reason to own. Think players like Coleman, Rose and Sanchez. The big problem with increasing the price falls of unattractive players, is that people would experience a loss of value by taking their chances on these players. That would only punish the owners, rather than incentivise them to think differently.

The solution could be to introduce price falls between GWs that are refunded. Between the 36 GW changes, the players can fall in value by 0.1. The algorithm would be based based around price, ownership , value and transfer activity. The owners would see the value and price paid for their player decrease by 0.1. The same 0.1 is added to their bank. By doing the price change between GWs, this mechanism would not interfere with the strategy of the players, but contribute towards slowly bringing overpriced players towards an acceptable price.

          Double or Quits

Can only be used in a single GW. You pick a number of points you think your team will achieve. If it achieves it you get double the number of points you picked (this encourages people to be ambitious because if you choose 40 in a gameweek where you score 75 you only get 5 points more than you would have anyway). If you don't achieve it (and this stops people getting too ambitious with it) you get no points.

When both teams score it's goals galore

Pick a week in which you think your team will score 6 or more goals. If they do score 6 or more goals in the week then all points received as a result of goals scored are doubled. If the team does not score 6 or more goals they get the points they would have in any other Gameweek but the chip is burned.

          Fair Play

Play this chip in a gameweek when you feel your team will be well disciplined. If your players receive 2 or less yellow cards in that game week you won't be deducted any points as a result of cards for that gw or the next 5.

If they receive 3 or more cards then all players receiving a card in that gameweek ar frozen out of your team for the next gw. They cannot be replaced using transfers or substitutes.

          The Twelth man

Lick the manager you thinks team will win by the greatest margin. If that manager's team wins by the greatest margin you benefit from the twelth man and get 10% (rounded up to the nearest point) of your teams points added on. This must be a clear margin. For example if you pick Mourinho and Man Utd win by 3 goals but Brighton also win by 3 goals then you receive no benefit and your chip is gone

If a player wins a penalty or a free kick and then goes on to take that penalty/free kick and score, he should be awarded the assist.

It doesn’t make sense how the penalty taker is punished if he’s also the one who has drawn the foul.

Either that, or change the rule so that these are not ‘assists’, and instead, award 3 points for winning a penalty.

          The Playmaker

Play this card and nominate a player as your 'playmaker'. For every assist that player makes - you get double the points!

However, if you play this chip and that player plays over 60 minutes, doesn't get an assist AND has a pass conversion rate of less than 90%, all playing midfielders and strikers have 2 points deducted from their tally.

Live updates in rank like the Norwegian and Swedish games.

At a very minimum, once the game updates after the deadline, the rankings will update based on hit deductions from transfers.

Would be absolutely awesome though, if like Norway and Sweden, rankings are absolutely live, meaning as soon as your captain scores and the points are added, your ranking will be updated to reflect that. Similarly, your ranking will go down in real time because a player that you don’t own has scored, or your defender conceded and loses his clean sheet.

combine bench boost with a Roll-back chip - usable only once

you either use BB as is, or can at any point before a new week's deadline opt to make manual subs for the previous gameweek (so can opt to bring bench points on but lose the boost option)

Transfers on the iPhone app are somewhat difficult. The transfers page on mobile version of the site is WAAAY better.

iPhone app forces you to make all your transfers in one swoop. Mobile site (and desktop site) allow you to remove a few players one by one, select their replacements, check your budget, info, redo, and keep on making amends. Just works a lot better. Using the iPhone app feels very restrictive.

They do need to sort out the BPS system - it seems daft that Firmino got more bonus points than Salah this season.

I'd like to see the clean sheet points tweaked a bit. Instead of 4 points for 90 mins I'd rather have 2 points for the first 60 mins plus 2 points for the final 30. That way if a defender/goalie has kept a clean sheet for 89 mins at least they'd get 2 points instead of nothing.

I think something should be done with defenders too but the bps re Firmino I don't follow you. It is precisely players like Firmino who so do much work and are so vital to a team that the bps is supposed to reward. Salah gets rewarded with points fir goals and assists already.

Maybe you're right, but I still think the bps system ought to reward outstanding performances and I'd normally expect the three points to go to the 'man of the match' regardless of what other points he's got.

I like all the chips as they are, but if they’re thinking about adding more:

          Auto captain

For those weeks where you don’t know who to captain, use this chip and your highest scoring player’s points will be doubled.

You may be undecided between Salah and Kane, and the Van Aanholt ends up outscoring everyone on the team.

More points for 'boring' positions ie. DM like Kante, Matic; and maybe the need to own one of these players.
More players in the squad, 17 (11+6 man bench), to match real life - would need a bigger budget.
...OR as most people play a 343 then you could have the option to own a 2-4-5-4 squad instead of the 2-5-5-3 atm.
Double Captain chip to captain two players in a gameweek rather than one player as Triple Captain.
The chance to win/earn free transfers - maybe if you get in the top 1%, or reach a high projected points target, then you get an extra FT for the following gameweek.

The priority has to be bringing more players into the game. Others have mentioned the pricing of the likes of Sanchez and others. But it’s clearly madness that Sanchez ended the season significantly more expensive than Salah.

Defensive mids need to have a bigger role, whether that’s through reweighting the bonus system (I think the better option) or forcing squads to have a couple (2 points for a CS?).

Linked to that, the mid/striker categorisation is becoming difficult. Should the likes of Sterling and Salah be classed as forwards alongside Kane and Jesus?

I’d also like FPL to stop revealing how many transfers you’ve made in a GW. It’s frustrating when a rival spends the last few weeks simply copying your moves.

Yahoo's game back in the early 2000s (which was then copied by fantasysportnet and Starting11, who had similar algorithms. Definitely Starting11 did) had prices based on performances. I don't remember exactly how it worked, but I'm pretty sure it was based on recent form.

So if Kane scores a hattrick this week, his price is likely to go up quite a bit.

If he scored a hattrick 5 weeks ago, then this would still be reflected in his price, but weighted a bit less as it was quite a while ago.

If he scored a hattrick 10 weeks ago, it would only slightly be reflected in his price. And if he scored a hattrick 11 weeks ago, then this would drop off and would have no impact on his price.

Get rid of 3-2-1 bonus awards, use the Fantasy Allsvenskan system where all players earn as many bonus points as their performance merits. Would be fairer than the current system and also bring lots more players and roles into play.

Blocked/saved shots don't count as assists, or at least don't earn the full 3 assist points.

Ideally get rid of all chips, but if they stay then keep them as they are, don't limit them to certain weeks.

I would like a way to make purely defensive midfielders more attractive. Either by categorizing them as defenders or by changing the bps system to give them an opportunity to become higher scorers. There are currently too many players that are just ignored. It would be good to make the pool of viable players bigger.

5 point bonus if everyone in your starting 11 plays at least 1 minute of the game.

Everyone's been in the situation where, let's say you've started Lingard, and he's been benched. You're hoping he doesn't come on for a 5 minute cameo because you have Mee, with a clean sheet, as first sub.

It doesn't seem right to me that you're being punished for a player you picked in your 11 to make an appearance in the match and get 1 sole point, whereas if he doesn't play at all, you may be rewarded for benching a player that's done well.

This will also encourage transfer activity which increases engagement.

A few blanks this gameweek? Taking a hit or two to field a full 11 is likely a decent strategy.

Phil Jones doubtful? Transfer him out, rather than stick him in your 11 even though he probably won't play, and collect your auto-sub's points. Starting a doubtful player because 'if he starts, he'll collect a clean sheet, and if he's out, I don't really care because my first sub will just replace him' is a cheap tactic. One that I use, definitely, but I'd much rather be rewarded for choosing a player that actually starts.

"On Loan Chips". One chip per position were you can swap a player out for another and the swap switches back next week with no loss of value. Just like the FH chip but for a player only. Ideal for a big week or when Salah is out for a just a week! Ultimate FPL had similar.

More points for partial cs like cs at half time = one extra point, only one conceded = 1 extra point so a 1-0 loss might mean 4pts for the defender providing his team concedes in the second half.

Personally I'm nit sure i like the way defenders are awarded points ie all get 4 points for a cs when some defenders have hardly done anything to get the cs. I think it might be worth looking at the bps system and trying to work out defender points based on actions. This would mean not all defenders in certain teams would be equal and the real good defenders in teams that don't necessarily get attacking points might be options.

One thing that drives me crazy is the points hit for an OG. More often than not, they come about through multiple failures and end up credited to the one person aware enough to get in position to make a desperate lunge.

Instead, why not dock a point for conceding a penalty? That gets at the same idea, but in that case, the player conceding the penalty directly and almost always intentionally contributes to the situation.

Maybe something like you can carry 2 free transfers twice a season, so you we could have two nice mini wildcards.

And no more then 3 chips in the season. Maybe to change the BB chip to a "park the bus" chip.

And I like the idea of two sets of chips, before and after Jan.

          I'd like:

          * OPTA assists (won't happen - would result in fewer points)
          * Ditch the chips (won't happen - they're intended to attract/retain players, I'm unconvinced it's worked but hey ho)
          * Remove assists for penalties scored and just award 2 points for winning a penalty. 2 points to be awarded regardless of the penalty outcome and even if the same player takes the penalty.

How about you have to buy a manager for your squad.

          If they get a win it's 3 points, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss.

Extra 1 point for goal from outside the box

Mandatory midfield slot for a "defensive midfielder" who can rack up points for tackles and 2 pts for clean sheet.

chips not in DGWs. Not there to be some sort of "get out of jail card" at end of season. BB would probablt then need changing.
Potential for one decision (when 100s are made per season) to impact a 38 GW season is too much.

Plenty of points already on offer in a DGW.

Curious to see the average TC score - SGW vs. DGW for this season and last season.

Just a quick message (from an infrequent poster on this site) to thank Jonty, Mark and the team as well as the daily posters for the informed insight and debate created on this brilliant platform. You have no idea how much a role ffs plays in my life and among friends and work colleagues. Looking forward to seeing how the new appointments add to an already-enriching experience.

Huddersfield got promoted with a negative goal difference I believe

They were also fawning over Stam who Huddersfield beat on penalties in a drab playoff final. He got fired.

It was competitive for a while. Towards the end my lead grew cause the rivals started taking unnecessary hits. Don't know if they're aware of FFS. Kinda hope not. 😉

As oppose it it closing at the end of August meaning even more unpredictability post GW1?

If anything this helps us as WC can be used to fix team and not worry about players moving and unsettling line ups around the time first WC is often played.

How much of a role do people think price changes played this season? Was money a big factor or was it more important to wait on transfers and not be swayed by missing a price change.

Personally never really felt squeezed for a cash and only ended up with a team value of around 103

The winner of this fpl season had previous finishes of 1.4mn and 1mn. Its proper testament to how freak the season has been with most teams having random performances and fpl chips only added extra luck element. Most experienced fplers just hate the extra luck factor

I'm not sure, I count myself as reasonably experienced but the new chip was practically the only thing that went right for me this year 😀

Of course I'm going to say that it was a freak season other than that, with lots of random players scoring big in unlikely fixtures, but others that had better luck than me would disagree.

The free hit chip screwed the most for planners. That level of points sgwkers hit in onset was a bloodshed. The bench boost helped no doubt but it would any team as its a powerful chip. Tc was a big let down for many.
