Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane go toe-to-toe for the Golden Boot on the final day, boosting large numbers of Fantasy scores as they go.

More than 175,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers made Salah the second most purchased player of Gameweek 38, many no doubt taking a transfer hit to bring him back in after Liverpool’s single match in last week’s round of double fixtures.

The risk, as it turned out, was well worth it as the Egyptian scored his 32nd goal of the season and also provided an assist in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Brighton.

Salah’s 11 points took him to an FPL record 303 points for the season, surpassing Luis Suarez’s 295 from 2013/14 with some ease. It was his tenth double-digit home haul and fifteenth over the campaign overall.

It also saw off Kane’s attempts to catch him in the Golden Boot race.

The Spurs striker scored twice in Tottenham’s remarkable 5-4 win over Leicester City, but that took him to ‘just’ 30 goals, three short of Salah’s haul.

The pair were the most captained players on the day, Salah leading the way on 25.2%, well ahead of Kane’s 18.66% backing. Among the top 100 managers, 52 went for the Egyptian and 35 for the England international.

The majority of managers who played their Triple Captain chip did so on Salah (54.09%) or Kane (20.30%) as well, with FPL’s eventual champion for the campaign, Yusuf Sheikh, owing a generous slice of his amazing last-day haul of 93 points to triple captaining the Liverpool star.

Vive Les Differentials

Salah (56.7%) was the most popular asset in the game, with Kane (37.7%) the most owned striker.

So while their final-day influence was significant, it was also widely experienced.

Leicester City pair Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez also delivered big-hauls, much to our frustration.

Second only to Man City’s Gabriel Jesus for transfers-out, Vardy was cast aside by 117,702 after scoring just twice in his previous four outings in disappointing Double Gameweeks 34 and 37 for the Foxes.

He picked the perfect time to serve up only a second double-figure haul of the season. The first one – back in Gameweek 1 – was also away to a north London side, in a 4-3 at Arsenal.

Mahrez, meanwhile, was subject to a major midfield exodus ahead of Double Gameweek 37, having produced five successive blanks prior to that round.

But yesterday he trolled us all, scoring and providing two assists in the 5-4 thriller at Wembley to make it 20 points from the final two matches.

Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (14%) scored the winner as Arsene Wenger said adieu rather than au revoir with a 1-0 victory at Huddersfield.

The striker has 10 goals and four assists to his name since his Gameweek 26 debut, blanking only twice in 13 matches, one of which involved a penalty miss – a remarkably consistent run that should make him a very popular choice when the 2018/19 season kicks off.

Only Sergio Aguero bettered Aubameyang’s points per match up front, by 6.8 to 6.7.

Crystal Palace midfielder Wilfried Zaha was the most purchased player of the final Gameweek, 176,000+ new managers taking him to 10.6% ownership overall.

The winger responded with a goal and 10 points – his third successive double-digit haul at home – as the Eagles beat West Brom 2-0.

The Ivory Coast star ended the campaign with five goals and four assists in the last nine Gameweeks and has upped his consistency by some distance since partnering Andros Townsend up front. If Zaha remains a midfielder in FPL – which will surely be the case – he’s sure to be a popular pick come the start of next season.

But the 3.1% owning Patrick van Aanholt were the real winners.

The defender netted for the third straight match, kept a third clean sheet in four and even had time to notch his first assist of the campaign in an all-action, maximum-bonus 18-point display which was the highest score of the Gameweek.

That indicated just how prescient the 75,000+ managers who made him the fifth most signed player of Gameweek 38 truly were. Like Zaha, Van Aanholt’s compelling end to 2017/18 – five goals, four clean sheets and an assist in the final nine – will turn plenty of heads when planning for next season gets underway.

In fact, only one of the top five transfers-in, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, blanked, and three of them produced double-digit hauls.

But only one player – Reds left-back Andrew Robertson (7.4%) – could match Van Aanholt’s score, and he did so by exactly replicating his performance.

The top two scoring midfielders on the day were the epitome of differential material.

Erik Lamela scored two and set up another of Spurs’ five goals, bringing in 16 points for his 8,618 (count them) owners, while West Ham’s 3-1 win over Everton came courtesy of a Manuel Lanzini brace benefitting just 44,860, or 0.8% of, FPL managers.

The other Hammers goalscorer, Marko Arnautovic (7.6%), completed his impressive conversion to the lone striker role with a goal and an assist for 12 points.

All 11 of his goals and all seven assists have arrived since being moved up front by David Moyes in Gameweek 16.

Arnautovic had mustered just 13 points in the opening 15 fixtures before delivered a further 131 points in 20 outings with the Scot in charge, averaging 6.55 points per match under Moyes.

It remains to be seen whether Moyes will remain at the helm, though, or whether any new manager will retain the Austrian up front. Like Zaha, if he continues as a forward for his club and is listed as an FPL midfielder, big investment for 2018/19 already looks on the cards.

Mentions must also go to Man United’s Marcus Rashford (7.6%), who scored in the 1-0 win over Watford, and Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez (6.5%), whose double in a 3-0 win dismissal of a wretched Chelsea earned his owners 13 points.

The Magpies’ frontman has made an early claim for the cut-price striker role in our three-man frontlines next term. Perez ended the campaign with six goals, two assists and ten bonus points over their final eight league fixtures.

Backline bliss in short supply

Only four defenders managed double figures on the day – Dejan Lovren and Florian Lejeune were the other two – and Robertson’s 7.4% ownership made him the most popular of the top ten scoring players in defence.

As it happened, of the eight most owned defenders in the game, only two of them featured in Gameweek 38 at all.

They were Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta (21%) and West Brom man mountain Ahmed Hegazi (17.8%).

Neither kept a clean sheet and they brought in a combined haul of two points.

No goalkeeper managed to make it into double digits, with Swansea City’s Lukasz Fabianski (10.1%) the pick of the crop thanks to a penalty save and nine points in a 2-1 home loss to Stoke City.

The Pole between the sticks saved three spot-kicks over the season – more than any other keeper – and owners of Wayne Rooney, Gabriel Jesus and yesterday’s victim Xherdan Shaqiri have good reason to be cheerless as a result.

Then again, more than 309,000 of Fabianski’s near-600,000 ownership benched their man for Gameweek 38…

Another tale of woe centred on Burnley’s backline, a much-vaunted unit that flattered to deceive all of us nearly all of the time.

Five of their defence, plus keeper Nick Pope, enjoyed ownership of at least 4.9%, and yet they kept just two clean sheets from Gameweek 22 onwards, culminating in a 2-1 home loss yesterday which involved shipping two goals in the last 16 minutes against Bournemouth.

Still, there’s always someone worse off, and the 9% of managers with Man City keeper Ederson in their squads had it bad.

The Brazilian didn’t even play in the champions’ 1-0 win at Southampton.

But he still managed to ‘score’ -1 points when he ran onto the pitch to celebrate Jesus’ last-gasp winner and was promptly booked.

That intervention might well have decided many a mini-league and should live on as a hard-luck story for the ages among FPL’s long-suffering acolytes.

    TLDR: Keep going.... 🙂

I think some of us are a little disappointed by our final finishes this year. This is a personal experience and we all played the season quite differently, but I hope this side-by-side analysis of my own season as a case study can give us all cause for optimism next year.
There’s no doubt I had a season to forget, even if it was perfectly respectable in the end. I finished down 38 points on last season (2262 compared to 2300) and 26k places (36.5k down from 11.5k).

Looking at my FPL Statistico reports from both seasons, however, there is actually cause for optimism. Whilst I did worse overall because of the greater number of players involved in the game, I am actually up or near level with last season on a number of key metrics, most of which show that I was making the right sorts of decisions, and many of which confirm that it was a bad couple of gameweeks towards the end which really did for me rather than poor picks overall (after all, I was 1pt off 10k after free hit GW 36). A few of these are:

    - Total points benched: 203 (compared to 265 last year)
    - Captain points: 599 (567)
    - Captain points as a percentage of total score 26.48% (24.65%)
    - Goals benched 0 (6)
    - In top 0.64% of total players (1.14%)

Must surprisingly, despite being 52 points off top 10k (6 last year) I finished 14 points closer to the #1 spot than last year, 250 away compared to 264! That’s pretty incredible, it shows that this season was much harder to call and the gap between #1 and #10k was much more fiercely contested this season, with a lot of good managers concertinaed in the top few thousand.

A lot of this shows that I made good decisions overall, but let myself down in key areas at key times. Looking at my stats, what really jumps out is that my main downfall was immediate points gained from transfers. Last year I made a similar number for a similar transfer cost and got an immediate gain of 326 points. This time round my immediate gain was over 100 points lower at 220. Does this mean that I have been making terrible decisions or has the transfer market been harder to call this season?

In any case, as I say, this is very personal but I hope it helps those of you who, like me, are a bit disappointed with the way this season has gone. You don’t become a bad manager overnight and it may be that you are, in many areas, making the right decisions and even improving year on year.

If anyone has their 16-17 stats to hand it would be really interesting to see your comparisons and conclusions.
As a great man once said: “We go again…”.

Indeed. Of course, I suppose it makes a difference how many transfers you actually make (I made 53). 127 points from 38 would be better. But if you made close to 50 then 127 isn't a great return and maybe you should focus on this next season (I will!).

I’ve finished 800 places (9k & 9.8k) better than last season and scored 9 points more.

But I honestly think it could have been a much better season for me. I’d blame my choice of defenders throughout (Ppg 3.55) and GW32 wildcard from which I learnt that I will always pick nailed players (not Son, Willian or Bailly) and never put too many eggs in one basket if the team has nothing to play for (Leicester). Lost 25-40 points here which would have put in Top 5k.

Really good points, Karan. I feel as if Chelsea's and Leicester's slumps were bad luck considering the fact that I loaded up on their players but it was a really bad call in hindsight. I want nailed players from now on, even if they are from crappy teams 🙂

Yup will always go for nailed players from now on. Like Groß & Eriksen over Son & Willian.

I think Leicester was a mix of bad timing and the team had nothing to play for. One of Vardy or Mahrez would have been sufficient and maybe we would have even kept one of them for 37 & 38.
But add Morgan to that and all the frustration that built up from 32-36 with Leicester players come GW37 I was absolutely hating them and there was no way I was keeping them. Maybe if I only had Vardy all that while I wouldn’t have sold him.

Cheers and congrats!36k is a good overall rank.
Agree that this season is harder to call and also that the points comparison shows that with more points we've got lower overall rank.(For me:16/17 2286 p and 15k,17/18 2293 17k).I don't think though that this happened because we had more players involved with the game but mainly because more people (like me) are using communities like FFS.
Where did you find your last year's stats?Prtsc?

Congrats to all ML winners, and thanks to the great FFS community for the advice and good chat this year. It might not have been a great year and a bit of a slog, but this place still made the game a lot more fun. Hopefully there's still decent activity over summer and there's a World Cup game to look forward to.

170k finish for me, a bit of a comedown after a run of 15k, 805, 1k. Really didn't enjoy the season, treading water between the 150k-300k mark for pretty much the entire 38 gameweeks not being able to rise higher or sink lower.

My first year as a Member too...coincidence? :p Sometimes there can be too many facts and figures and it overrides gut instinct or spontaneity.

Arteta is a video coach, as a part of a bigger coaching team in City, that's all the experience he has.

That with no UCL is a disaster like scenario for attracting top talent

No chance the board can mess up that bad.

He is too expensive for them. Can't see them going for a top manager. Saving money is the name of the game at that club.

Arsenal and Palace players could be great next season. It will be interesting what the two teams will do in the transfer market. Auba, Ramsey, Ozil, Monreal, Laca, PvA, Zaha all interesting options.

Burnley defenders will surely be priced around 5.0/5.5 now?
If they are 5.0m, I'm definitely having one in my GW1 team.

Robertson will be at around 6.0/6.5, and still worth it.

Pretty sure Zaha won't be at Palace next season. Although it'll be interesting to see his price if he is a Palace player when the game goes live, and then moves to a top 6 team.

Be a fantastic option at that price whether he's at Palace or a top 6 club. I think, and I hope, he gets a big move this summer. Good enough for the top 6 clubs IMO.

I'd say 5.0 for Burnley defs as no one really sticks out (unlike Maguire, PVA etc who has been 5.5 for a reason).
Liverpool defenders will be really interesting, they are the tighest in the league since VVD joined. It'll be interesting if the pricing will reflect that, or if they will be at 5,5.

Just gonna have to console myself with the fact that it's my highest points finish ever lol
Still disappointed with the final OR but at least we can show a HUGE +32 points for those 2 transfers and "they" say don't take hits for defenders!!! 😆

Smooth: 12 point hit to take out DDG 0, Morgan 0, Willian 1 and Vardy 13 (14 all in) to:

Romero 6 Dijk 6 Salah 11 as captain, Ayew 2 yielded a grand total of 1 point!

Rough: lost two leagues from players playing chips they had forgotten about, so their triple captains were worth 33/24 points compared to my Jesus 12 last week. Never mind!

Smooth: Bellerin in for Davies, captained Auba again which sort of worked out.
Rough: Smalling no show meant pulling Stephens' 2 points off the bench

Overall I've gone from an OR of 449922 in GW36 to 242702 in GW38, so I can't grumble.

Rough: Went to GW38 with 35 point lead in cash minileague. Alonso, Vertonghen no shows. Main rival overtook my lead with his double Newcastle defence and Ayoze Perez brace. In the end losing that league by one point when I would have only needed Gross/Alonso to start or Ryan to concede one goal less to win it.

Planned transfer all week; Alli to Salah. In the end I went with Jesus --> Lacazette for differential, to break into top 50k. That move actually cost me top 50k:P Smooth; Arnie as captain (but it did`t matter,as Kane & Salah scored same). Next year I`ll be more dulllard 🙂

      Smooth:
Took a -4 and sold Alonso and Pogba > TAA and Salah (C). Fabianski pen save, Arnie finally hauled for me.
The roughest was Jesus benched i guess, but he got a goal from the bench. Can't complain, rose from 36k to 35k. Best rank of the season in the last gw, a good feeling all around.

Won my ML as I’d done one less transfer than my opponent and back in October I’d overslept a deadline and lost a transfer.

      What makes this truly smooth?

He had ederson in goal with Joel Perira in goal. So initially thought Jesus goal lost me my league after busting my Cedric clean, but the ederson booking won it combined with the one less transfer. Dream stuff !!

Rough: The panic when 4 of my starting team were dropped: Naughton, Bavies, Willian, Jesus with my ML rival having 4 good differentials in their place.
Defense scoring 3 points. Recently my defense has gone to pot, in last 2 GWs my 5 defenders have totalled 14 points (which is 15 games counting the DGW).

Smooth: 2 transfers really paying off to secure my ML: Silva -> Salah (c) and Son -> Arnie
Had seriously thought about getting rid of Vardy before GW37 and before GW38 (to Ayew!), and he produced the goods twice. If Mahrez goes there'll be no Vardy in my team next year though.
Jesus scoring, first time in months a non-starter did something.

Rough and Smooth: My daughter puking all over me just before the deadline, made my transfers with 15 seconds to spare.

      Smooth. 110 (-8). GW Rank 5,705.

Did Sane > Salah, and bought Rashford and PvA to finance that move. TC Salah.

Salah, Kane, Jesus, Arnie, PvA, Mustafi and Fabianski all returned points.

Rough: Alli 1-pointer blocked Dummet (6pts) off the bench. VDH and Sterling blanked.

Rough: Was ahead in my ML by 14 points before kickoff courtesy of my rival taking a hit. Yet I finished the day 7 points behind in a disasterous showing from my sure-fire picks! 😆

Only 38 points in total from Sterling, Mkhitaryan, Eriksen and Sterling over the last 2 gameweeks (18 fixtures including TC). Mkhitaryan somehow managed to avoid attacking returns from 270 minutes as an influential attacker in an Arsenal side that score 7 goals in that period.

Also this gameweek, Masuaku was taken off after 20 minutes, and of course, Lowton, Azpi and Ryan lost their clean sheets, while Alonso didn't even show up.

Meanwhile, my rival has 6 players who don't start in Maenpaa, Vertongen, Monreal, Rudiger, Smalling and Barnes, yet smashes my score thanks to Mahrez's haul (a player I sold along with Vardy (also hauled) and Kane (also scored -again) in GW37 to avoid this high-scoring fixture! 😆 ).

Ultimately, I have lost because I chose to upgrade Lingard to Zaha instead of Eriksen to Salah, which I could also afford. Sure, Zaha got my (and my rival) points, but the Salah captaincy would have allowed me to maintain my lead. I figured such a defensive move was actually dangerous given my slender lead, and that more points were on offer if I trusted Erik and co to deliver just a slither each instead of frick all!

One less goal from Salah also would have handed me the win by 3 points. But there are so many ways I could phrase another route to success. Ultimately, I lost fair and square! I ended up with 53 points and slipped nearly 11k from 21k to 32k.

Smooth: It could have been a lot worse. Thankfully, my captain, Aubameyang was the guy who scored the only goal for Arsenal this week (though assisted by my rival's Ramsey). My rival owned Aubameyang, so his points (not doubled) along with Wood's 9-pointer were my decent differentials.

Thanks all for a fun season. I can't wait to go again 😀

Waited a long time for a smooth worthy of writing! "Why not me" I said every week haha.

      Rough:
      Ederson DSilva Fernandez didn't play.

      Smooth:
However, that meant Perez (13) Fabianski (9) and Dummett (6) all came on from the bench. Had Lejeune (11) third sub tho 🙁
Salah C with double digit scores also from PVA Arnie and Kane. Jesus TAA and Ramsey with 6. Only blank was Eriksen.

Gave me 111 points and a GW rank of 4,597. Jumped from 77k to 34k.

Smooth: -8 hit to do Son, Lingard & Chilwell to Arnie, Zaha and Robertson paid off in sparkling fashion as lady luck shone on me to overturn an 8 point deficit and claim ML glory.

Was Rough But Turned Out Smooth: Ederson, Vertonghen and Jesus not starting. Jesus came on to score at the end (stupid booking getting cancelled out by a surprise 1 bap too), Ederson's booking got autosubbed away, and Vertonghen not playing meant I missed out on potentially him conceding four.

Smooth: Christensen-Samalling OUT to PvA-Robertson IN -4 for 31pts gain. Best pair of transfers I did in my 2 seasons career; won my ML by 46pts; finished 9986 OR my best rank ever.

Rough; Four no shows - Silva, Vertonghen, Lingard and Jesus initially. With two mins to go and no solid team news I bottled doing Silva>Zaha, instead did Kenedy who definitely wasn't playing out for McArthur. Cost me 8 points. VDH blank subbing in, Maguire blank.

Smooth; Salah(c), Kane, Jesus goal, Dummett sub cleanie.

56 points dropped from 17.9k to 25.2k. Still decent enough seeing as my target was top 50k this year. Won several mini-leagues too.

Not leading my ML since before xmas, only to top it with the final GW of the season and take away the title!

Success was largely due to performances from Salah cap, Arnie, Wood, and even a cheeky goal from super-sub Andy King.

First season playing serious, and finished with 16k OR, which I'm pretty satisfied with.

Many thanks to you Jonty, and the other scouts for great tips and entertainment each week and also the FFS community for all the bants. 🙂

Rough. Took a hit to transfer out Cédric for TAA, then left him on the bench because I forgot to save the lineup adjustment. With a final rank of 52,004, I think that probably just bumped me out for the top 50k, which was my target

Smooth: Captained Arnie as a 'nothing to lose' punt and he outscored Salah by one!

Rough: Only had 9 players thanks to rife rotation, and didn't take hits to correct it.

A freind of mine Bench Boosted and lost his ML by a point because he had Ederson's -1...don't think you can get rougher than that.

Rough: No 3rd consecutive top 10K finish.

Smooth: Took an 8 pt hit and the players I brought in outscored the ones I took out by 22 points (not taking captaincy into account). Also took a gamble on downgrading Alli so I could fund my other moves, and he only got 1 pt. I did Alli (1) + Willian (1) + Kiko (0) -> PvA (18) + Salah (11) + Gudmundsson (2).

And then, in what can only be described as a miracle from the FPL gods themselves, Vertonghen got injured a couple minutes before the game.
My first sub was Vardy (13), who was undoubtedly helped by Vertonghen's absence.

Also rough (sort of): I was very close to captaining PvA - left him as my VC. If I had got Zaha instead of Salah I would have probably captained PvA.

Smooth – Salah (c), free transfer of Smalling to Van Dijk, Arnie, Vardy

Rough – No Alonso meant Dunk for zero. Jesus & Son on bench

Rough last 2 gameweeks for me. I went from 19K OR in GW36 to 40K and went from winning a ML by 41 to losing by 4.
My GW37 transfers made sense on paper: Mahrez, Vardy, Bailly, Murray -> Sterling, Jesus, Mawson, Ayew for a -12. Perhaps too much of a points hit but I needed at least -8 to bring in Jesus and Sterling and an extra -4 seemed worth it at the time.
The players I transferred out outscored my new recruits, 52 to 24. Take into account that I would have played Gross over Murray, instead of having him on my bench, and add the -12 means I lost 51 points overall. I was 56 points outside of 10K in the end.

          Smooth:
          96pts and a top10k finish

          Rough:
Doing the maths and realizing that the series of events in 37-38 actually cost me 1000£
-The last time I ever missed a deadline was back in 13/14 due to a classic hangover. This year there's no excuse, i knew Utd-Brighton were scheduled for friday, but a brainfart of seismic proportions gave me nightmares for days and days.
          - The longplanned BB37 never happened and I ended up with 29pts on the bench in 37.
-The bonus though? I got to play it in 38, which meant that the only bonus I got from the chip, was having Ederson's -1 count even though FPL made the courtesy of subbing him with Fab just for the fun of it.
          - Ederson's heroics gave my ML-rival the chance to finish equal at 2317pts, and a rank of 8 places higher OR due to him having taken 2 hits, while I had 3.
          - Would have ended the season with a nice travelbudget for the holidays, a total of 2347 pts and and OR of approximately 3800 had it not been for all of this.....

Rough: Mourinho'd! Pogba's late appearance cost me Perez's 13 points coming in off the bench which cost me top 50k - which was my goal going into the last few weeks of the season.

Neither were a cash league, but lost one mini-league by 1 point because of two yellow cards (thanks Van De Horn and Jesus).

Lost my other league by 19 points - was 89 behind with 8 weeks to go, got it down to 19 behind but taking Perez (13) out for Abraham (1) for a hit and Grob (1) out for Martial (0) for another hit meant it was second place for me.

Hi Jonty, only a tale of woe from me. I had led my 24 man mini league for over 2 months and was sitting a respectable 15000 overall.

My lead was down from over 40 points to just 1 by the start of GW38. I gambled and transferred in Mane & Firmino for a 4 point hit for the final game. My reasoning being that Liverpool had to go all out to win for the Champions League place and they had already beaten Brighton heavily once already this season. Sitting here now having watched the highlights over and over I still can't believe neither of them scored or assisted. They both had so many chances.

It doesn't end there as the players I took out were Mahrez and Jesus. Mahrez was supposed to already be in his flip flops on the beach and Jesus I thought was not a guaranteed starter (which was correct).

Ended up 3rd! .... and 22,000 overall after a 60 point GW38 that could have been so much better.

haha I'm dying over here. I honestly think they may have peaked. Sounds like a potential on the cards for Poch and owners not willing to invest. Likely will lose Toby A and maybe rose. Kane,Eriksen, Alli there one more season to enjoy the new stadium and then moving on.

Not sure where they can go from here

Mentality. The manager, as good as he is, and the players, don't have the winning mentality needed as of yet.

They have a good set of players but they can definitely improve.

Alderweireld, Dembele (China) and Rose are probably off.

So a minimum of a CB, CM and LB. I also think they need a better back up striker who can play in the 10.

That being said, their wage structure and reluctancy to spend is holding them back. So whilst it would be nice to be signing the likes of Manolas/Jorginho etc., they'll probably end up the likes of Maguire/Shelvey.

Yeah, I agree with this. They need a big name signing to show their ambition and keep their top players. Sounds like they need Modric and Bale back 😀

Modric and Bale are big name signings who will please the fans but won't fix their problems. On the wrong side of 20's, probably's close to 30's and would be on mammoth wages. They sound like signigns United would make.

Spurs need to be in the market for the likes of Manolas, Koulibaly, Jorginho, Neves, Zaha, Mahrez, Fekir, Pulisic, etc.

That will elivate them to the next level.

Rose will likely leave and Lloris has been poor this season so that's two possible problem areas, they always seem to be a team on the cusp of something decent but they just haven't had the luck when needed to pick up that trophy.

The main reason i believe is that the starting XI are way better than the rest. Having watched almost all Spurs games during the last 3-4 years, i believe whenever Poch tries to rotate, the difference is clear in every position. Spurs need to change the backup. Rose, Sissoko, Wanyama, Lamela are way worse than Davies, Dier, Dembele, Son. Plus without Eriksen or Alli, the teams attack weakens strongly. So they ll have to play 90 mins in almost all games.

So when the games outcome is about to be not good, Poch looks at his bench and there are Llorente, Wanyama, Lamela, Rose etc. Who would you choose and to replace which starter? We shall keep the players who have contributed in the teams success so far but to go a bit higher, replacements should be much better imo.

GK, Lloris keeps making mistakes. And the CM ain't as good as it's made out to be. I'd like to see Eriksen play deeper, and let Lucas Moura get more time further up the pitch. That should make them more creative.

I don't agree with Lloris. He's definitely made a lot of mistakes and is a concern, but I really can't see Spurs getting any better goalkeepers in. Should rather look for a young and talented GK that can take over from Lloris in the future IMO.

Fair enough. It's as Skodaole says, the first 11 is very strong but the bench is woeful. Sissoko should be nowhere near the squad of a top 4 team. But it's not easy getting good players in to sit on the bench, I think that's why they are struggling so much to get a decent striker in.

Totally agree mate, Eriksen deeper with a quicker player in his position would result in more attacking gameplay. Lucas seems a great addition would like to see him getting regular minutes. Maybe he could share minutes with Alli and Son next season.

His passing forward is a lot quicker and far better than Wanyama's for a start. Wanyama was caught in possession so many times over the last 3 or 4 games. He's too lethargic on the ball. Eriksen has to come deep to get the ball when Wanyama plays but Dier seems to be able to find Eriksen in pockets allowing him to stay further forward. It obviously didn't help that we struggled form wise from about mid April to the end info the season though

Yeah, I don't quite get him. In Pocchetinos biography he consistently rates Dier as potentially one of the best in the world, but he alludes to there being some issues with the boys self belief. He has his moments, but he often seems like a weak link, especially in the big matches.

                  Guilem Balague, indeed.
It's definetely worth a read. I don't quite like the format of the book (It is in the form of Pocchettino's diary which I find a bit akward considering it's written by Balague and based on interviews with players and other sources of the club as much as Pocch himself), but it has lots of interesting information and you learn a lot about how he thinks and how good he works with people in the team. Some very interesting observations on the squad he inherited as well, as well as surprisingly much about the Espanyol period.

To sum up, not the best football manager book but I reccommend it.

Respect the opinion, but disagree. Dier is my favourite one both in CB and DM position. If you check the games he missed (same outcome if you check Rose's starts instead of Davies), you ll see that not only Spurs conceded opportunities and goals much more easily but also that created less chances. Dont have numbers, i just watched the games so have personal opinion just by the feeling those games left me.

Reason imo is that Dier's absence was critical for the balance of the team in front of our box. Result is that Eriksen should go much deeper to get the ball so we lost one attacking player (who of course isnt a defensive player, so we lost something in both ends).

CM the biggest problem for me, and also full backs and wingers a slight concern.

Wanyama been nowhere near as good as he can be when fit this season, and Sissoko... well, he's Sissoko. Dembele sadly struggling with a lot of small injuries and not that consistent anymore, but definitely still amazing on his day. Dier not as good as last season either. I really think Spurs need a quality player here.

Aurier has been a distaster IMO. Trippier is pretty good, but not world class and has a few weaknesses.. Rose not been playing a lot and at his best, and likely to leave. I like Davies, he's good but not world class either. If Rose leaves a LB is needed, and I would like Aurier to be replaced as well (but I doubt they'll let him go already).

I still think they need a top class winger. Son has been really good at times, but also equally frustrating at times. Lucas Moura could step up here, I had hoped he would get more game time than he has so far. Hopefully a preseason could do wonders.

Lamela has to go. As much as I like him, it's not been working out for him and I think he could get his career back on track somewhere. I'm hoping Spurs are bringing in someone like Sessegnon to replace him. He can definitely become a top class winger soon, but he won't be cheap.

          Mids can be very inconsistent.
Son & Lamela too often play for themselves (ok for FPL not for PL).
Alli's just generally had a poor season.

Clearly they are light up front other than Kane but it's hard to sign a top striker to play as second fiddle. I think part of the problem has been that they've signed players to fill the squad in recent windows rather than guys to go straight into the team every week.

If I were Spurs I'd sell Aurier, Sissoko and Llorente this summer. I would also consider replacing Lloris with someone like Oblak if they could get him. I actually think Martial would be a great signing for Spurs as he would strengthen them in wide areas whilst being more than capable of filling in up front if required. I also feel they could do with a more box to box style midfielder as another option.

It looks certain that Alderweireld will go and will be a huge miss. Sanchez has done well but is young and still a bit error prone. Alderweireld will be hard to replace. Rose will also go so they need another left back.

They are a very good team indeed - they finished 14 points ahead of Arsenal and ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool. Unfortunately Man City are on another planet at the moment, and think they may be for some time.

They need a better bench. Poch makes the same substitutions - Moura / Lamela on for Son, Wanyama / Sissoko on for Dembele, Llorente on for Kane. He needs players like Zaha, Izquierdo, Shaqiri, Martial - people he can play or bring off the bench and make an impact.

          For me, it’s pace.

          Agree with bench options though.

Spurs are not particularly blessed with players able to make quick runs or counter. Yes they are clever, but that’s more intelligence and positioning. Eriksen can only do so much with a pass, and Son is about the only quick player they have (Lucas not quite gelled in the prem yet)

They really struggled to break down teams in the same way United do when Martial/Rashford are not included. No quick runs, and relying on aerial presence which doesn’t always work.

Foyth could be included in CB list (should be more involved next season). When Vertonghen injured in warm-up last night, some people prefer to see him in CB over Dier there.

Don't forget Winks in CM. He was considered as one of their significant squad member this season, too. And from what I'm gathering and read about Tottenham tactics this season, CM is the biggest priority. Dembele likely won't fit enough to play every single game, and it's not that easy to replace him with current CMs they have. Lemina is considered as a perfect replacement for him.

I hope Lucas would get more minutes to make impact to offer changes. Also, Lamela, who Poch said would be useful against teams that sitting deep, wasn't good enough since recovered from injury, but last eventful night hopefully will be a huge step to rediscover his form.

AM to rotate with Eriksen is another possible target, so far Alli/Son could be rested but Spurs were different without him (1-1 vs Soton is one I can remember).

And of course, a striker to compete with Kane 🙂 Llorente is a good striker but so far it didn't work. Even when Llorente is fit, he sometimes being left out from their matchday squad.

they need to improve mentally.. winning is a habit.. say all you want about Real being lucky in CL this season they are so consistent in the big league.. that is because players are used to it i.e., winning under pressure. Poch is turning into another wenger (no offense).. runs out of ideas when going gets tough.. Alli is so past it now (maybe it is the hype getting to him)..

I think their problem is their full-backs are getting worse. Walker is the best RB in the league and before Rose got injured he was arguably the best LB. Now with those two either gone or going you've got Trippier (better crosser but can't run) / Aurier (has all the athletic attributes but can make rash decisions (and can't take throw-ins FFS)) and Davies (a good full-back but not as good as Rose was in his prime). When you had Walker and Rose in full flight it made such a difference to Spur's attacking play but the replacements just aren't of the same quality. It's removed a key aspect of how the team attacks and that has stymied their forward play undoubtedly.

It's mental. There's a boxing adage that unbeaten fighters are difficult to beat because they don't know they can be beat. I think they need to win something and then they know they can and end up expecting to win. It's the same for teams on unbeaten runs, they don't expect to lose and seem to pull out these last gasp wins and goals. It's not always the case (I'm thinking of Arsenal latter Wenger and FA cups) but often the case. Man U had a curse despite spending lots of money... then they sneaked over the line (despite leading the league for a long time I think) with that last gasp Steve Bruce goal against Sheffield Wednesday that probably gave them the belief (I think it was two in injury time). Seemed a huge struggle to pip Wednesday and Norwich... but then came a belief and mentality that stayed through many different Ferguson teams and was passed on to players coming in. They expected to win, they were incredibly driven. Wenger's Invincibles were the same. Immense mental strength and will to win.

It's not that the squad is'nt good enough, it's about creating a culture of winning trophies. Spurs have been punching against clubs in a different weightclass for years now, and have still managed to Get out on top.

This year they beat lfc, Arsenal and Cfc this season, and have finished higher than both utd and city in recent seasons. They do it consistently, and they do it with far less money than the others. Just cause they are'nt winning the prem, or are'nt playing the final in Kiev, does'nt mean that they are doing it wrong.

My guess is that the top sides in England can learn a lot more from Spurs than vice versa.

Keep the current players, keep the current management, and keep developing as a club. And if by any chance, a proper back-up for Harry Kane and a goalie better than Lloris becomes available, invite them to join the team that's best at giving other topsides a run for their money.

Thought I’d give my 2 pence worth, there’s lots of ways we can improve. The first 11 is brilliant only second to Man City imo, but the squad players for example Sissoko Lamela Llorente just aren’t good enough for a top 4 club.
We need to invest in the summer and bring in a few players that can change the game off the bench and provide decent cover for the like of Kane Eriksen etc when they need a rest.
Looking at the centre midfield positions, I think we need a new player to compete with Dembele, someone who can make something happen, see a pass and show that bit of quality we lack in that department.
To conclude I’d like to see us go in for Zaha, hes brilliant, scores goals and is so direct he scares the hell out of defenders. If Rose leaves which is likely I’d like Sessengon from Fulham the kid has a bright future.

As an interesting aside, rumours (of the Dusan City or whatever his name is 'Zaha won't play' style no doubt) are that Poch is going to make all kinds of unrealistic demands of Spurs in order to justify leaving... for the Arsenal job.

They have a great set of players who play well together, demonstrated by their consistent performance in the epl over the last few years. Trust that City, Chelsea, united and arsenal have al won silverwear over the years while spurs hasn’t, but there’s not a lot of silverwear to go around and incredibly competitive at the top.

          Mentality aside:

RB: Trippier can be exposed. Aurier far too rash. Walker-Peters shows real promise.

CM: Sadly Dembele cannot manage a busy schedule. A ball playing Modric type my main hope.

AM: Son has been brilliant, but he's gone from being a squad player to first pick leaving no back up attacking wise. Zaha would be a great fit.

CF: A young talent to back up Kane, and give a genuine 2 up front option when behind. Sadly llorente doesn't offer this.

Wildcard: someone attacking with pace to do something different. Unsure on Lucas.

Levy has a huge decision to make after maurizio laid it on the line for him yesterday. it could decide spurs destiny for the next decade. all of spurs best players can double their money at other clubs..it really feels like pocch has being saying goodbye for a w hile now and if he goes (I think Madrid will come calling) he will take harry with him

They have the talent, but lack the winning mentality. They need to be ruthless and focused all season, and believe they can be champions. I suppose that comes from the manager.

you also need to factor in the fact that players like kane and eriksen are seeing others earn bigger money at other clubs and sadly that as an effect on a winning mentality. man city and united pay the best wages and they were first and second

You have to win to be a Madrid manager - developing players isn't good enough nor a priority for them. They want instant success by any means possible. It's made to think Zidane could get sacked despite winning 2 CL's, and potentially a 3rd!

zidane had won absolutely nothing before he took over. they will take a chance on pocche no problem. a lot of spanish journalists have said pocchetino is highly prized in spain because they realise he is getting a lot out of that team with far less resources

Zidane will always have the players and fans on side as he is a club legend, Poch is quite the opposite so it would turn into sour grapes if he didn't deliver instantly. Which I can't see him doing anyway. Too many egos in that RM dressing room, and Poch would be seen as a nobody to them. This is a group of players who have managed to kick out Mourinho, Benitez, Ancelotti etc.

exactly. Real and clubs like that take a manager who is either incredibly successful and respected or who would get the big name player's respect through his achievements as a player.

Does anybody know who ran/started the minileague 'R u smarter than the 10k club' for players who had never achieved a top 10k finish?

By far the best quality minileague I've been involved in, and it managed to achieve its objective in that 12 players (including myself :)) managed to get top 10k finishes. The guy who won the league finished 30th overall!

Rough - lining up Arnautovic to replace Willian for a minus 4 then changing my mind at the last minute. Bringing in Shaquiri to replace Lingard as a differential and hearing he had a penalty saved. Triple captained Sterling in GW37

Smooth - Winning 3 of the 6 MLs I took part in with a 2nd and 2 3rds. Happy with that although top of all 6 with 2 weeks to go.

Yes ridiculously so... 2014, 2015, 2016 I had consecutive finishes in top 10k... started slipping in 2017 to 75k... 170k this year.

I know exactly where I went wrong the last 2 years though & it was aggressive transfer strategies.

Back to being a dullard next year for sure, likely back into top 10k again too, will be interesting to see.

        Scout Pick Scores!

Another bumper season for the FFS Picks

I keep track the Scout Picks score for each week + the GW's highest scoring EPL player.

Scout Picks this season scored 2140 (no Captain) and the average highest GW player scored 16.92 pts (Total 643pts over 38 GWs.)

        In perspective?

I scored 1951 pts (no Captain) with a OR of 27,444.

And yes, picks is a WC every week but $$ are limited - how did you go?

To work our half your your Captain points:

With respect, it's not remotely comparable; like you say yourself - scout picks are essentially a WC every week!

I don't think their budget limit does anywhere near enough to compensate for that. We'd all have performed better under those rules than we would have simply by docking captain points from our FPL teams.

TL;DR - Transfer activity should start off at 100mph and many deals will surely be done before the World Cup.

Clubs will have a shorter time than ever to recruit players ahead of the next season in the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two.

        Opens: May 17th
        Closes: August 9th at 5pm.
        Season start: August 11th.

This gives just 4 weeks before the World Cup and, 3.5 weeks after the WC.

Gini has a very particular role to play in that liverpool team and its not even comparable to what Pogba is asked to play...he is very different to when he was at Newcastle. he's not there for goals and assists (but even then he still chips in) him and hendo are primarily there to break up play and offload to that front three to attack at pace

Well. Gini isn't average. And even if they were all fit, Keita is far better than all of them.

Keita is one of the best mids in Europe, he is not coming in at the 6-7m range.

Will he get goals & assists to be a fantasy option? Or more of a Makelele/Kanye type?

I think Pogba could be set for another improvement next year, really hoping he stays below 9.0

What if he gets injured? Or suspended... or busted for performance enhancing drugs? Or Pogba actually settles his head & gets to work? But it sounds like a lot of people really rate Keita... will be interesting to see how he settles in & adapts to new surroundings, new culture, new training, new teammates, more physically intense game, no winter break etc.

Really looking forward to seeing him play int he PL, can’t wait for next season. Also looking forward to how Utd, city, Chelsea, spurs arsenal react & who they sign, and what players they sell to teams further down the table etc... I have a feeling next season could be the last one before the TV money bubble bursts & world football financially collapses too, so we better make the most of it while it’s here!

He is a box to box midfielder but pretty much can do everything.

Here's a tweet from Squawka which sums up Keita..baring in mind he played this season not arsed as they didn't let him leave.

Naby Keïta for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga:

              58 games
              150 take-ons
              146 tackles won
              118 interceptions
              112 fouls won
              86 shots
              79 chances created
              14 goals
              12 assists

Gini isn't tearing up trees in the box-box mid role.
            2017/18 - 793mins per G/A
            2016/17 - 198mins per G/A
            2015/16 - 186mins per G/A

Pogba (direct comparison wouldn't you agree?)
            2017/18 - 112mins per G/A
            2016/17 - 289mins per G/A

            Ox
            2017/18 - 171.8mins per G/A

Ramsey (similar role and FPL price)
            2017/18 - 108mins per G/A
            2016/17 - 247mins per G/A

As an RBL regular over the past couple of seasons, I've had the pleasure of watching Keita play first-hand on a number of occasions. I would certainly second Berb's summary of Keita as an elite option - the man covers incredible volumes of ground, and his presence holds together what is often a relatively lightweight midfield.

Projecting players into new systems - and especially into new leagues - is always tough. Keita certainly has the physical and technical tools to thrive within the PL, and he's also played in an aggressive high-press style for long spurts of the past two seasons, which should help to smooth the transition to Klopp's Liverpool setup enormously. The big difference I can foresee, and this is especially poignant in terms of FPL, will be the players in front of him. For RBL he was often given the role of advancing the ball himself - driving from deep midfield into the final third - and exploiting the pace of Werner (and to a lesser extent, Forsberg and Poulsen) to get in behind the defence. But Liverpool already have players who like to do this; further, Firmino often drops deeper into this space for LFC (to allow Mane and Salah to function as strike-runners off the ball), and I wonder to what extent there might be some redundancy between Keita and other players already in place.

I think he'll be a massive addition to Liverpool, and greatly improve the value of other players - particularly the defence. But I suspect he'll be a bit too aggressively-priced to catch my attention as an asset in his own right. With Liverpool having so many other attackers on the pitch, he just won't have the goals in him to raise him above the other players in the 7-8 million range in which he'll likely fall. Still, something like a 6 goal, 8 assist season should be on the cards - maybe an Aaron Ramsey like season, if things fall perfectly for him (7g, 10a this year).

Nice analysis... Looks like he got 6 league goals in 25 games last year... so assuming that would have been a ~100 point season... wouldn’t go near him with a barge pole in FPL after seeing that... however good he is, he’s hardly going to go from scoring 6 in the Bundesliga to scoring 10 or 12 in the PL? But just because he’s not an FPL option obviously doesn’t mean he won’t be a fantastic player for Liverpool.

Pogba on the other hand scores 6 goals this year, but also got 13 assists, and he is slated on here as being rubbish... it’s a funny old game!

Yeah, my overall sentiment is the same. However, to defend his goalscoring attributes for a moment: 6 goals in 25 games would prorate to 9 in a 38 game season. Also, it's important to consider the shift in systems: he's leaving a side that scored 57 goals this season to join one which scored 84, and who generally practice a much more attacking style.

I wouldn't take the over on 10 goals (as I said above, I think somewhere in the 6-8 range is most likely), but it's not ludicrous. After all, Doucoure scored 7 this year (and Capoue 7 the year before) from much worse situations. But yeah, he's probably one to avoid unless there is compelling preseason evidence that the new system will change his game.

True, I wonder how will he cope physically with the demands of he premiership? If he was only fit for 25 bundesliga games, does that bode well for the PL where it is way worse physically?
