Metrics – Appraising The Chip Strategies

With another season now passed I want to reflect on it and analyse and in particular the variety of strategies used when activating the Fantasy Premier League chips.

We had two major Double Gameweeks this season, 34 and 37, and we also had two Gameweeks that featured a significant number of postponements, namely 31 and 35.

There was much debate during the season about how to approach these Gameweeks with the chips in mind.

One of the areas of contention was whether to use the Free Hit for the blanks in Gameweek 31 or 35 (or even in one of the Double Gameweeks).

There was also plenty of debate on whether to use the second Wildcard early in the second part of the season or perhaps just before one of the Double Gameweeks.

Finally, there was doubt about which Double Gamweeek was best suited to the Bench Boost and the Triple Captain.

I hope to give some insight on all of these questions.

The Methodology

I believe that each of these queries cannot be answered in isolation.

For example, to know whether the Free Hit in Gameweek 31 was better or worse than in Gameweek 35 it is not enough to look only at the results from those weeks, because the deployment of the Free Hit chip is a part of a bigger plan affected by the Gameweeks around it.

Therefore, I decided to look at how managers performed in the last 10 Gameweeks of the season collectively.

These start with Gameweek 29, which was around the time the chip debates kicked-off, with many preparing for the Gameweek 31 blanks either with transfers or with the activation of the Free Hit.

To avoid making the data biased with only success stories I gathered data for a random sample of 25,000 active managers in the top one million, recording when they used their chips and what total score they achieved in the last 10 Gameweeks.

The following are therefore not only statistics for top managers but for everyone who kept playing until Gameweek 38.

Hopefully, with such a big sample the results will be representative of the effect of different chip strategies on overall performance.

I will first present the statistics of each chip used, separately. Then I will show the results for the most used and most successful combined chip strategies.

The Free Hit

members

30.0% of Free Hits were played in Gameweek 31 while 12.61% were activated in Gameweek 35.

We see that the average scores achieved by both set of managers are very close, with a difference of only two points in favour of the Gameweek 35 Free Hits.

So, it is possible that playing the Free Hit in either Gameweek was equally effective.

We also see that managers who activated the chip in any other week suffered some damage. Even the 4.74% who used it in Double Gameweek 34 lost around 20 points.

The results suggest that the Free Hit was best deployed in a Gameweek with postponements, at least based on this first season.

The Wildcard

members
members

The majority of second Wildcards were either activated as soon as the chip became available in Gameweek 22 or right before the Double Gameweeks.

We see that the most successful use of the Wildcard chip was in Gameweek 32 (599.5 points), followed by Gameweek 36 (596.6) and Gameweek 33 (592.3).

All these successful users were right before the Double Gameweeks.

There were some arguments before Double Gameweek 34 about whether to Wildcard directly after the blanks, so in Gameweek 32, or wait one week and Wildcard in 33.

The numbers suggest that waiting that extra week was not the best move and caused managers to lose around seven points on the Gameweek 32 Wildcard, while the managers who Wildcarded late in Gameweek 36 suffered only a three-point loss on average to that group.

The Bench Boost

members
members

The most popular Gameweek for Bench Boosts was Double Gameweek 37 (28.72%), not 34 (22.18%). However, the scores suggest that managers who activated Bench Boost in Gameweek 34 are the ones who earned more points over the final push.

They got 7.4 more points than Gameweek 37 Bench Boosters, and at least 20 more points more than managers who Bench Boosted at any other window, outside of a Double Gameweek.

The Triple Captain

members
members

Double Gameweek 37 was managers’ favourite window for activating the Triple Captain chip (31.24%), followed by Double Gameweek 34 (17.85%).

The scores, however, suggest that it was the 7.73% managers who activated it in the final Gameweek who fared best.

But the difference between that and the Gameweek 37 case is negligible; generally, managers who used the Triple Captain in Gameweeks 37 and 38 achieved comparable results.

In summary, individual chip results suggest that the best Gameweeks to use the chips this season have been:

Free Hit: 31 and 35.
Wildcard: 32 and 36.
Bench Boost: 34.
Triple Captain: 37 and 38.

But this doesn’t tell the whole story. There might be a combination of the chips used together that resulted in even stronger results.

The Collective Chip Strategy

Now let’s look at the more accurate picture with all the chip strategies in play.

I will present the most used chip strategies for active managers this season and their results. I only included strategies that a reasonable amount of managers used so that the statistics remain meaningful.

As an example, many odd strategies were implemented by a maximum of ten managers in my sample, those I omitted because their average would not be a good indicator of strategy effectiveness. This means that there could be other potential strategies, which almost no one actually used, that would have fared better

The most used strategies are those much discussed on Fantasy Football Scout which consisted of Wildcarding in either of Gameweeks 32 or 33, then Bench Boosting in 34, Free Hitting in 35 and Triple Captaining in 37. However, they were not the most successful strategies.

Instead, the strategy that won the award for the most effective is:

“Strategy A” which was to Free Hit in 31 to cover the postponements, followed by the use of transfers to load up on Gameweek 34 Double Gameweek players, then Bench Boost in Gameweek 34, Wildcard in 35 to acquire Man City and Arsenal assets, then Triple Captain in Gameweek 37.

I didn’t see this tactic used too much, but managers who did use it scored an average of 10 more points than the more popular strategies.

In hindsight, it does seem like a very efficient plan, particularly when other popular strategies missed out Man City and Arsenal assets in Gameweek 36 and even 37, a problem that “Strategy A” solved.

The second best strategy was even less popular and was deployed by only 0.2% of active managers.

It is “Strategy B”, which is very similar to the most popular route or “Strategy D”, but with the use of the Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 38 instead of 37.

Again, in hindsight, this makes sense as most of the Triple Captain candidates in Double Gameweek 37 failed, while Gameweek 38 was, as usual, high scoring.

Next come two very close strategies, C and D, which are very similar, with the exception of the use of the Free Hit in Gameweek 31 vs 35.

This highlights that there is no significant difference between Free Hitting in Gameweek 31 or 35 if the popular strategy was used when activating the other chips.

While Gameweek 35 Free Hit managers enjoyed a strong return, they seem to have lost some ground around it – particularly in Gameweek 36 when they got their default squad back; this put them on equal footing with the Gameweek 31 Free Hitters.

It is worth noting that most of the best strategies involved using the Bench Boost in 34 and Triple Captains in 37 or 38.

We should also acknowledge that the popular strategies didn’t fail, “Strategy D” was 12.5 points short of the top “Strategy A”. Of course, these 12.5 points could have a significant impact on rank, but still “Strategy D” was better than so many strategies not listed in the table and considered here.

Meanwhile, popular strategy G (which is the same as D but with delaying the Wildcard one more week to Gameweek 33) works out as 25 points lower than the optimum strategy.

Waiting this extra week with the mediocre Gameweek 31 players in the team and missing on so many price rises (and falls) really damaged this approach.

Personally, depending on how the fixtures fall, I will consider using my Triple Captain chip outside of the Double Gameweeks, maybe over the final weekend to mimic “Strategy B”.

Myself and so many managers have been burnt by the failings of the Triple Captain in Double Gameweeks over the last three seasons (remember Andy Carroll?). While Gameweek 38, with its plethora of goals, could be far more effective, particularly if there are for teams and players with motivation on the final day.

A bit late to this one, but I don’t think it is surprising that a good OR can come from no really good GRs. In general, the best ORs will come from picking consistent performers through the season - and those players will often also end up being owned by many of the managers in the game. So when your team does well, many other teams will do well too and you’re not likely to ever get a very high GR. To get the really high GR on any given week generally involves having the 1 or 2 ‘freak’ scorers that week who most people won’t have considered - and they won’t help you the next weeks.

        My best: 21,130 in GW13
        Worst: 4.1 million in GW5

        Poor season.

Yep, saw that. Would be interesting to see what algorithm they use. I pretty much stay the same in both our HoF and their one.

Looks like this one gives a far greater weighting to the current season - and also heavily punishes poor recent seasons of 100,000 or less.

As a sort of steady eddy manager I guess both algorithms suit me.

It's apparently based on the last 5 seasons and it looks like you have to be in the top 50k this season to be in it.

From a quick glance, it appears that it doesn't weight top 100 or top 50 finishes significantly higher than say a finish in the top 3k. I think the HoF puts far more weighting on those high positions, which is why Paul Gee crashes in after this season.

Its'a good argument to have. Is the gap between 5k and top 500 bigger or as big as the gap from say 20k to 5k? How you weight those kind of things is pretty crucial.

I thought Chris' metrics were based upon points scored rather than directly by rank? So there could be a greater weight on a top 500 rank but only assuming the points gap between 5k and 500 is more than the gap from 20k to 5k. Could be wrong 🙂

Greenwindmill is correct, it is based upon points scored. This is from Chris:

"HoF score for the season is essentially a percentage of the 'maximum
score' that anyone has got that season (not strictly true- looking at my
code it is an 80% mix of the average of the top 5 scores that year and a
20% mix of the average score that year). Thus, it is possible for a score
for a year to be over 100 (and thus it is possible for someone to have a
HoF score of over 100, but this would be insane!)."

I go ok in both too, not advocating one over the other, just thought you might enjoy being above Mark. Seems like you could not care less, Mark on the other hand 😉

Heh. I only care because I want to make the HoF better. It's good that there's another view out there, both systems can learn and get better I guess.

Yeah, it seems this one murders a bad season which is why my 192k nightmare has buggered me. It also doesn't weight extreme high finishes quite as high as the HoF by the looks of it.

There's is capped at 5 seasons where as the HoF can accomodate a full career so they're never going to be totally comparable for that reason.

I'll definitely ping Chris and perhaps get him to pop in soon with some thoughts on how he can tweak the HoF.

      5,055,935. YES. REALLY. in GW37

That took me from 10.5k to 37k in less than a fortnight.

So I wildcarded late partly in order to catch some good GW37 fixtures and players and didn't even break into the top 5m that week. That absolutely ruined me. I bet I only beat a handful of dead teams.

Actually can anyone beat 51-8 for GW37? I didn't see anyone active on here with a worse score.

My brother played wildcard in 32, bench boost in 34, 35 (with 8-9 players incl. jesus and auba), 36 triple and 37 free hit. In the end he got in the top 10 000 and won our league by 50 points. At the time of 32 leg he was 2nd in the league.

This is a strategy that was never mentioned but worked very good.
I was going to do the same but injuries of Arsenal players and so on led me free hit 35 and triple cap in 37.

Yep; if you look back at the results of players, the popular picks performed well in GW35 when people WC or FH and players “underperformed” in the other DGWs, hence a FH or WC in GW35 showed the best results

Aha. I'm a bit of an online gamer/console player and this is the name I use online and it's easier for me (login purposes) to use the same tag across the board. Also means sometimes you might bump into other people from other platforms you didn't realise were here.

The EU part was when I was a console gamer it allowed players to know I was playing from Europe (as opposed to ANZ or US). Trust me, I wish it wasn't there now.

Cahill/Smalling I agree could be a question mark, but he obviously feels Cahill is a better footballer. Smalling is hardly outstanding, in my book he would not stand out in a mid table team (a la John O Shea and other ex united players). Don't rate Wilshere at all, again he looked average for Bournemouth last season and has not stood out in a poor Arsenal team this season. Shelvey got talent, but clearly has questionable temperament and positional indiscipline sometimes too. He needs to prove he is over these for the long term. Team is built round him at Newcastle, it won't be like that for England.

I was looking at my GW history and I was devastated by the amount of points I had benched this season (274). I gather I wouldn't have accumulated all of these points because had a bench player been selected over someone in my starting XI then I would have lost the points from the starting XI player.

    Before I break this down here are some stats;
    0 points on bench: 3
    1-3 points on bench: 12
    4-6 points on bench: 5
    7-9 points on bench: 5
    10-15 points on bench: 11
    16+ points on bench: 2

On average across the season I ended up with 7.2 points (to the nearest decimal point) on the bench which equates to just 1.8 points per player which doesn't seem all that bad.

So I delved further, I wanted to see what my best possible squad had I picked the "best starting XI in hindsight" (no captain changes were made). After calculating all of the point swings (check first reply to this post) I could have improved my score by 126 points taking me from 2,299 to 2,425. Gutting and interesting. There were 25 weeks out of 38 where players on my bench outscored players in my starting XI, just goes to show that team selection really is everything.

I’m not sure what I’m meant to do with this.

I’d understand if it was strong players left behind on the bench but in the first instance you’ve mentioned benching Walker, Hart (for a relegated Foster), Mane.

It’s only hindsight if it’s a comparable player (eg, Southampton vs Swansea players

Mentioned by the user below, I think I'm basically questioning myself on whether a fodder bench might be worthwhile (I've never been a fan of bench fodder). WBA started season strongly, two wins and a draw (two clean sheets in both wins) so I was probably using my heart to pick Hart (West Ham fan) instead of my head. Just lessons to be learned.

Can't believe how many times I got DDG & Pope the wrong way round though! I punished myself a lot as well as someone who rates DCL quite a bit but I consistently left him on my bench, but I think this was more because of his inconsistent minutes.

I also think it's worth raising the topic that anything can happen in the prem, is it always better to play it safe or sometimes to gamble on a team turning over another?

Not complaining at all. Just made for an interesting read (in my opinion). For example the main mistake I seemed to make was getting DDG and Pope round the wrong way most weeks (many people criticised me for having two "premium" 'keepers).

Also granted my reply is more for the stat junky who wants to see where the points come from but I don't feel the initial post is too long.

I had a ridiculously low weekly Bench point average - 2.97. One of the reasons for this is I had 2 C.Palace keepers for around 10 games, also I had Femenia injured on my bench for over 2months.
Even taking this into account it still seems super low. Anyone lower?

      I finished 22k OR.

    Reclassification

Is it likely that Arnautovic will be reclassified as a forward next season, or does Moyes leaving and the subsequent uncertainty help the cause for him to remain a Midfielder for next season?

Likewise with Zaha. WIll much depend on the business Palace do in the transfer window i.e. if they don't buy another striker, is there more chance he will be reclassified?

Ignoring Salah, any other possible reclassifications from Midfielders to Forwards that people are thinking may happen?

People talking about Salah, but Sterling actually started and played centre forward more then we think.

Think Arnie May escape. Dependent on signings and new manager, think he could still burgle a midfield spot as he spent a fair chunk of time as an inside forward.

Zaha is tricky, on that basis Townsend could join him. I think Zaha will and Townsend won’t.

Hazard won’t be reclassified but in all honesty I don’t think he will be there next season.

      For me...

      Arnie
Yes. Became the leading central striker.

      Zaha
No. Free role. Only went up there because of Benteke’s form. I think Roy will buy new ST.

      Salah
No. Firmino should be FW. Mane and Salah remain MF. Salah made striker runs, but he was primarily RW/AM.

I think the basis for reclassification is more a question of which other forwards the team has, rather than whether the player is actually a forward.

Last season, Sanchez and Firmino played huge parts of the season in identical roles. However, come July, Liverpool had only Solanke, Sturridge (snigger) and Ings as alternative forwards, and none of those were likely starters. Arsenal, however, had Welbeck, Lacazette and Giroud, all of whom could have staked a claim to be a recognised starter.

On this basis, both Palace and WHU look likely to go into the new season with viable alternative forwards; in which case I wouldn't expect either Arnie nor Zaha to be reclassified

      A Young mid to def
      J King fwd to mid
      Milner def to mid

With RLC returning to Chelsea surely Roy will put Zaha back on the wing and look at other striker options.
Could Aubameyang be reclassified as a mid? Is he likely to be lined up as a left side attacking midfielder with Lacazette as the foward?

Ah good point on young and Milner.

Aub won’t, he’s a striker that just happened to be shunted out wide. Just like with Origi and Firmino last year. Forwards but not in position, like welbz

Are average heatmaps used at all in this kind of determination? I guess there's a similar type of question to be had for defenders (wing-backs) potentially being re-classified as midfielders, wasn't Ashley Young one of them originally?

Lack of cheaper forwards indeed. Is this a reason to make Sterling an 8.0 FWD, unsure.

I've had a look at these on understat.com. There are some interesting findings:

Sterling played every game as either a right sided forward (FWR), left sided forward (FWL), or as a forward (FW). He spent a lot of time in the opposition penalty area and scored a number of goals in the 6 yard box. He's also been listed in the forwards for the world cup. Last season was different, he was playing mnore conventionally as a right sided midfielder. Therefore, I think there is a strong case for Sterling to be reclassified. Its a similar case for Sane and Mane as a left sided forwards, according to the position data.

Arnautovic played over 50% of matches he was available for as a forward (20 starts as a forward, 8 as a midfielder). I'm not sure wether historic positioning is taken into account with reclassification (I believe it is not, as Milner was reclassified as a defender after only one season out of his entire career played at left back) , but if its weighted more towards the current season, then there is a strong case for reclassification here. It would be nice to have a decent mid price forward option actually, as this was a woeful position for FPL managers once again this season.

Zaha appeared 24 times as a FW, and only 4 times as a midfielder. Its a similar case to Arnautovic really, but I'd say Zaha has an even stronger case to be reclassified.

Sanchez is an interesting one. For Arsenal he was deployed in midfield, but for Utd he has played more often than not as a FWL. Its about 50:50 between the 2 positions over the season, but of course he is now a utd player.

Milner should be reclassified back as a midfielder.

Also, I know the original poster exluded Salah, but a comparison of his heatmap with Firmino's shows the 2 should be classified at least as equals, if not with Salah MORE of a striker than Firmino, judging by the heat in the oppositions penalty box.

Yes. Salah's heat map when I checked with 6-7 game weeks to go was identical to Lukaku's. His reclassification is a no-brainer IMHO.

Don't think it will happen tbh as wingers are not classified as strikers but as midfielders.
Wouldn't surprise me if they did though as there is already talk from FPL Towers of him being priced at £14m whether that is as a striker or midfielder I'll wait and see...

if you look at their heat maps firmino/salah/mane all play as forward as each other, salah actually slightly more. the only difference is that 2 play wide and one central

they should either all be forwards or all mids

Grey area with the likes of Auba being LW (fwd) and Mkhi RW (mid).....same inconsistencies apply allover the park and ultimately this is fixed by pricing. Salah £13ml mid or £10ml fwd is my guess.

Did Salah have the most impressive FPL-campaign ever this season?

I don't think so.... He certainly holds the record for most points in a single season, but I can't help but comparing him to Suarez's 295-season.

Suarez only played 33 games, which means he had a ppg average of: 8.939
Salah played 36 games this season, which means he had a ppg average of: 8.416

I think an average of 0.5pts per game is very significant. Therefore i still rate Suarez's season higher than Salah's

It’s a good point, although I do rate that to the best of my knowledge Salah has never bitten someone on the ear in a football match.

A fair point. But what about Salah being a midfielder and playing for the most part on the wing. Salah started cheaper too so better value and the fact it was his first season make it impressive too I think. If Salah wasn't such a BPS dodger he could have got even more points though.

Truetrue. But Salah receiving cspts and extra pts for goals prob makes the bps-argument moot. I dont want to put value into the equation, but if its a deciding factor for you, id say their difference in price prob gets negated by the fact that Suarez was a standout captaincy option from gw6-38 in his 295season, whereas Salah did'nt really receive that "status" until halfway through the season.

Remember also that Salah is classified as a midfielder so gets more points for goals, assists, clean sheets.

However, I think what's been most impressive with Salah is his consistency. People have been going on about ceilings and floors a lot this season and Salah has a both a low floor and high ceiling.

Suarez in 2013-14 accumulated 40 bonus points. His other numbers for that season are 30 goals (one of his 31 goals was originally credited as a Joey O'Brien OG), 25 assists and 6 yellow cards.

#FPL Managers will happily pay £14m for Salah

That is way too much even for Salah. That too based on one season. Something like 12-13 million is more realistic. And then 14 million the following season if he keeps the same output.

      14m ain't bad.

If he has good fixtures, I'll certainly still consider him for the start.

If not, he still offers a relatively safe route to points during an unpredictable period. Especially as a captain, even if he's not great value.

Regardless of all that, as you say, managers are still going to be willing to pay 14m. It's up to us to choose better teams than these other managers. Whether or not that will include Salah is up to us. But the fact that I would consider him for 14m suggests to me that it's not too much. Depends a lot on the price of other players, though

      1. CloudSky

This is true. If he still has a 30% ownership from the get go at 14 mil, they priced him just right.

I think all of this is inevitably going to boil down to a 13.5 mil price tag.

13 mill most would have, 14 would discourage many but 13.5 is just that little bit more frustrating for us all.

Has anyone done an analysis of how much Salah would have got this year if classified as a forward? I cant imagine there's a massive difference given the every baps he'd have got. Perhaps enough to justify 0.5m difference?

          Quick and dirty answer is:

Thanks for this great article Ragabolly, it's confirmed some of my thinking, namely:

    1. Consider using TC in GW38, due to DGW disappointments and GW38 being more 'free-flowing' and exhibition level
    2. Staving off the BB for as long as possible (DGW37 worked ok for me), so I can have a 4.0 reserve GK and 1 x 4.0 DEF most of the season

i only came around 2.5 millionth, i was wonderinjg what is the key to this game as i really want to improve next year. can anyone help me out?

is it about trying to find the most consistent squad for the whole year and changing as little as possible or would you say it is more about just frisking the fixtures every couple of weeks and making a couple of changes , do you guys look ahead to max of 2-3 fixtures?

i definitely made too many hits and will avoid this next season.

    can anyone give any advice?

You should be able to improve on a 2.5m position by choosing the GW1 Scout Picks (including Salah if he's not in there already), putting the captaincy on Salah, and not changing your squad for the rest of the season.

I think an important discretion to make is to take all the lessons this place teaches (be patient with transfers, plan intelligently list goes on)
But unless you're going to pay for a membership so you can crossreference your picks, be very careful about just blindly following the template. Remember, the template is always more reactive than proactive.

      Play boring, play predictably.

The scout picks, along with the watchlist, are a fine way of keeping track, as they are all there based upon sound reasoning, and, the majority of the time, good statistical analysis.

Place your captain on either the first or second placed captain pick from the poll each week and you'll be in the top 50k in no time.

Personally i think best to worst goes something like this.

      Bailly - Jones - Smalling - Lindelof - Rojo.

But realistically only Bailly and possibly Jones are good enough for what Utd want to be. None come even remotely close to the CBs they've had in the past 30 years

To be honest the state of CBs in football is absolutely dire right now. Probably because the game has changed, but go back 15 years and there were probably 10-15 world class central defenders. Right now... Ramos, Godin, maybe Bonucci

Team chemistry might be a problem for a season but they are rumoured to be spending big, as well as loaning decent quality players.
