Christian Eriksen becomes the latest midfielder to claim a place in our Team of the Season for 2017/18.

The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker joins counterparts Mohamed Salah, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne in our line-up, having earned 7.14% backing in the recent midfield poll.

He also took fourth spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings thanks to a total of 199 points.

Yet that was down from a career-high 218 points in 2016/17, when the Dane delivered eight goals and 20 assists.

Although he netted ten times, Eriksen’s assists tally almost halved, dropping to 11.

Looking at the underlying numbers, there was a drop off in minutes per shot (from 23.8 to 33.3) and key passes (from 28 to 34) from the previous campaign.

Eriksen offered a consistent source of returns, with a goal or assist in 19 of his 37 outings.

Surprisingly, though, in spite of that security of pitch time, he played a part in more one goal on just two occasions, managing a mere four double-digit returns.

As a result, an opening cost of £9.5m in FPL deterred plenty of Fantasy managers in a season where many of Man City’s midfield (and Mohamed Salah) were delivering hefty returns for cheaper starting prices.

Nonetheless, Eriksen still bettered team-mates Son Heung-Min (178 points) and Deli Alli (175) to cement his role as the top Spurs midfielder in a season where the north London side were temporarily forced to play their home matches at Wembley Stadium.

The Prospects

Having returned double-digits for both goals and assists for the first time in his FPL career, Eriksen will remain one of the most reliable big-hitting midfielders around.
The underlying numbers show just why.

In terms of goal threat among FPL midfielders, only Salah bettered the Dane for both shots (144 to 97) and efforts on target (66 to 39).

The Spurs playmaker was ranked second only to Kevin De Bruyne for both key passes (105 to 95) and big chances created (19 to 16), a clear sign of his all-round Fantasy ability.

However, Eriksen’s limited close-range threat hints at why his price never went beyond £9.7 last term.

He placed just sixteenth in midfield for efforts in the box (35), lagging behind both Son (51) and Alli (45) for Spurs.

Indeed, he managed just six big chances to Salah’s lofty 43 at the midfield summit.

That lack of threat in the box, relative to the vast majority of premium midfielders, means that Eriksen is more of a “fire and forget” option and less a player whose form will oscillate.

With Mauricio Pochettino’s men now back at White Hart Lane next season, there’s a hope that they can return to the form of 2016/17, where their total of 86 goals was more than any other side.

By comparison, Spurs’ tally of 74 strikes was some 32 goals behind Man City in 2017/18.

Should Spurs up their output, then it’ll be hard to look beyond Harry Kane as their chief source of returns; the England forward looks the the likeliest to rival Salah for the captaincy in any given Gameweek.

Eriksen’s numbers show that he will always remain in the mix for those prepared to double up on Spurs.

But that lack of explosive potential, allied with the increasing competition from Son as the go-to Spurs midfielder, somewhat lessens his allure.

Eriksen - a great option to own if you stick with him for the season, but at his price he often loses out on a spot in your team to more explosive players.

      Yep.

He’s one of those players that scores goals in batches. You just have to jump on when he scores his first goal of the season.

Yeah, tends to be a slow starter though so feels overpriced vs other options for your initial draft.

          Yep, I agree.

Unless Spurs’ starting fixtures are really easy games then I’ll look elsewhere in that bracket.

Just doing a bit of World Cup number crunching and thought I would share as a lot of the teams I have pretty limited knowledge and that might be the case for a few other people as well.

I have calculated the odds of each team remaining unbeaten in the group stages based on bookies odds. This gives a good picture of the competitiveness of each group and highlights teams which are heavy favourites in their group and should hopefully score plenty.

    Group A
    Uruguay 53%
    Russia 41%
    Egypt 14%
    Saudi Arabia 2%

    Group B
    Spain 64%
    Portugal 37%
    Morocco 7%
    Iran 2%

    Group C
    France 69%
    Denmark 23%
    Peru 8%
    Australia 4%

    Group D
    Argentina 62%
    Croatia 31%
    Nigeria 9%
    Iceland 7%

    Group E
    Brazil 73%
    Switzerland 15%
    Serbia 12%
    Costa Rica 5%

    Group F
    Germany 63%
    Mexico 16%
    Sweden 14%
    South Korea 6%

    Group G
    Belgium 58%
    England 51%
    Tunisia 4%
    Panama 2%

    Group H
    Colombia 41%
    Poland 32%
    Senegal 20%
    Japan 12%

I was surprised to see Peru so low after the momentum they have gained the last few months according to the article on here. I will probably put a couple quid on them to do well in the group stage.

Agreed - I'm not a betting man but could see them running both France and Denmark very close, they play with great precision and unity and I wouldn't be shocked to see them top their group - I definitely don't think France will walk it as they're expected to.

Sané looks like a must-have to start the season with considering he will be fresh from not making Germany’s WC squad.

Think he is straight in for me. Should be 9.5 max too so might be better than risking Sterling/KDB.

Yeah if he gets the rest over the summer he will be a safe bet for fpl in the opening weeks.

I can not believe a player of his quality has been left out of the squad. He was pretty ineffective in that friendly against Austria but i do not think that is the reason.I know he has good competition for his place in that German squad but still something must have happened behind the scenes to say he got the chop.

        Yeah, it’s really strange.

Low has used Draxler a lot more and I imagine that's who'll start. It was a straight choice between Brandt and Sane and Low has obviosuly just made his decision from there.

I wonder what were the deciding factors lowe used in making his decision?

I think Sane is a better player than Brandt but i wonder if it was to please the home crowd in Germany seen as Sane does not play his club football there.

Definitely the stand out City option.

Them signing Mahrez means they'll have 3/4 wide players who predominantly play RW. With Sane being dropped from the NT, he is a shoe in at LW for the start of the season.

It wouldn't be surprising if FPL rack up his price even more.

      1. Fantasy Gold
        • 12 Years

Surely they can’t bump his price up just due to him missing out on the WC?

I thought that it’s all based on previous performance and where their prices finished at the end of the season.

Ah, this will be (theoretically) invaluable - we all love getting a player on set pieces. Of course, the number of goals scored from set pieces for any one team at a short tournament like this is stupidly small so the actual impact is very low but I'd inevitably waste my own time doing the research otherwise!

True. Nice to use as a deciding factor sometimes though.

Milo was one of the best value mids last season, purely because he had pens.

Yep, he's an extreme example though and taking a random 3 game selection from his season would still only give an ok chance of a return.

Anyway, I was thinking less about penalty takers (which is a more reasonable deciding factor) and more about when we painstakingly research Senegal's regular corner takers, etc. which is more or less madness 🙂

Arsenal interest in Fellaini is genuine and it sounds like he’s more likely to sign for them than he is to renew with MUFC or sign for AC Milan. Has already spoken with Emery, who wanted to sign him for PSG.

    Eriksen is so consistant.
Of all the concepts talked about in FPL (the idea of rotation and coverage and captaincy options and percentage ownership), the one valid tactic not discussed a lot (and should be a hot topic pre-season) is 'set and forget' options. Patience is always suggested as a better option than chasing points but there really is a lot to be said for picking a few 'tent-poles' to leave undisturbed for a season and concentrating the efforts on catching the streaky runs of other players.

Intrigued by the term 'tent-poles' here. I understand from context what it's meaning, just interested to know if you've made it up or if it's in wider use and I've simply never heard it used this way before.

As to your actual point, I think it depends. Diva makes a good point at the top of the page - overall he's excellent but if you nail your transfers you can beat him with some astute moves jumping from one mid to another and save some cash into the bargain. Also possible to be worse off though so maybe a few more reliable 'tent-poles' is a decent tactic.

Also, sure he's constistent but he has periods of form too. From week 1 to 12 ish he was gold, but then dropped off a bit iirc. You can get on and off him same as any other mid, but a bit like KDB he's bounds to return sooner or later

Sure, pretty unusual for any player not to have some degree of highs and lows of form, he's just one who is more likely to tick over a little in his lulls I think. At least that's my perception, someone like Ludo will probably rock up and make me look silly with some facts shortly...

He is a pretty steady player, with arguably 2 periods of quite bad form amounting to 11 GWS total, with several meh spells where you wouldn't mind not owning him. The "lull" you alluded to I've put in brackets, with a PPG of 4.9 (not including the game he missed) over that period.

I just made up tent-poles (tm)

At the end of every season I stare in disbelief at the dead-team that could have won

To be honest I think the idea is more to help you focus on actual proper use of your transfers. Eriksen or KDB or Azpi haven't scored for 4 weeks - "these are not the problems you are looking for" !

It's a variation on the 'form is temporary, class is permanent' saying I guess. Hard not to get itchy feet when your big hitting midfielder has returned 7 points in a month though 😉

'Tent-pole' movies are often referred to i.e. big blockbusters which film companies expect to make returns from and set other releases around 🙂

I kind of agree but it's a bit simplistic way to look at things. Players like Eriksen also have dry spells, like GW9-14 and GW34-38. It would take ridiculous amount of patience to persist with him when he was blanking and Sane was on that crazy streak.

A 'set and forget' Eriksen might fetch you 200 points but starting with Eriksen and then jumping to Sane and later Sterling when patterns were emerging would quite comfortably outscore Eriksen's 200 season points.

"If" you can predict the dry and non-dry spells then by-gad this is the true alchemy we all seek.
Not all players seem to guarantee the kind of points people like Eriksen has done season on season (for his bracket) and so it';s a way of taking a "slot" and making it redundant to the decision-making process
I would suggest "Redundancy of slots" should be every FPL players goal.

Yeah, although I think a valid tactic is having one or two players like Eriksen and Azpi as set and forget options to have there for the season and then use transfers on trading in and out the others that are more 'streaky'.

Dunno, having Eriksen in the last 1/3 of the season was great...

Yes. This is what I'd like.
Two of these guys. The keeper slot doing it's thing. Aleays maintaining (updating as required) at least two guys covering % ownership & captaincy must-haves and then the weekly transfer comes down to maintenance or the magic bean hunt.

If you have a reasonably good bench, a good keeper, and lets say three stalwarts that are in your team longterm, then you have a pool of 7 players to transfer regularly. That's a decent number imo, although the practice will be different I'm sure.

Eriksen is my favourite FPL player to own. Always delivers when you need him to, class act, bonus points galore. It's incredible that he's made the FFS TOTS three times in a row now.

Yeah he's the kind of player I love to have - keeps ticking over and can be shifted without too much worry if the fixtures really turn, because I'm usually not afraid of missing hauls.

He's not usually a captaincy option, for me, but he's the kind of player that helps provide a platform for consistent green arrows if you nail your captaincy or more explosive options

Yup very consistent player. But I wonder about his price tag this year. Should be 10m which might be a lot?

Interesting pick. Mids have great odds but never fancy them to outscore forwards unless someone does a Mo Salah.

Or, perhaps more aptly, James Rodriguez. I back Spain to at least reach the final, and they need a goalscorer - either Aspas will suddenly step up and take the mantle or Isco and Silva will score 4/5 goals each a piece at least.

I’m personally not so confident about Spain reaching the final but I could be wrong they do have a great team. Just feels like anyone could score from that team and goals will be spread.

Just don’t think Uruguay will last that long in the tournament. But yes these strikers can score 5-6 goals in the group stages and run away with golden boot.

I hated these posts last season, but what do you think, viable?

    Dubravka | 4.0
Robertson Sandro Mendy Pereira | Boly
Salah Sane Mkhitaryan Jota | 4.5
    Aubameyang Tosun | 4.5

I think best case 0.5 under, worst case 1.5 over
