The second of Sunday’s trilogy of World Cup matches is the Group F encounter between Germany and Mexico, which takes place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Kick-off is at 4pm.

The match will be of much greater interest to Fantasy managers than the lunchtime meeting between Serbia and Costa Rica, with Germany players in particular widely owned in the McDonald’s FIFA World Cup game.

Die Mannschaft’s backline warrants special attention, with Joshua Kimmich (£6.5m) the most-bought German player: 26% of McDonald’s FIFA managers own the Bayern Munich full-back, who recorded an incredible nine assists in ten qualification appearances.

Manuel Neuer (£6.0m), who missed most of 2017/18 through injury, and Mats Hummels (£6.0m) are owned by 22% and 14% of Fantasy managers respectively, meanwhile.

Thomas Muller (£9.5m), who top-scored for Germany during qualifying and who scored five goals in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, is owned by 16% of Fantasy managers, perhaps a surprisingly low percentage given his tournament pedigree and midfielder classification.

No Mexico player is owned by more than 1% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA, which is not a huge shock given the tough nature of El Tri’s opening group match.

Juan Carlos Osorio’s side scored on more occasions and conceded fewer goals in qualification than Costa Rica and Panama, the other two CONCACAF nations who made it to Russia.

Goalscoring has been an issue in recent friendlies, though: Giovani dos Santos’ strike in the 1-0 win over Scotland was Mexico’s only goal in their last four internationals, which were all contested against European opposition.

No UEFA nation scored more goals in qualification than Germany (43), while only Spain and England let in fewer goals than Joachim Low’s side, who conceded four.

Set-pieces could be an area to watch today: Germany scored twice as many goals from direct corners (eight) as any other UEFA nation during qualifying. No European country had more goal attempts from set plays, either.

The 2014 World Cup winners haven’t been in such commanding form in 2018, however: the unconvincing 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia on 8 June was their first victory in four internationals contested this year.

Yes! Got zero Germans in my team. Now time to bring them in as there is a mass overreaction to Germany losing. Mexico are decent, Sweden and South Korea less so.

Hector and Werner. Maybe a cheeky punt on Brandt as he looked lively.

Werner didn't look great I thought. Guess he could score a few if some more chances came his way

    Fantastic match. Top stuff.

    Great counter attacking by Mexico.

Worryingly dominant second half for Germany though...better things to come from them for sure.

Disagree with the commentator saying it's one of the world cups biggest shocks . Tad unfair on Mexico. Ever since the days of that legend Hugo Sanchez they been a team capable of beating a top team

Not really. Mexico have been a solid WC team for years, expected to get out of the group stages

Expected to get out of the group stages, yes! Expected to beat Germany, no! This is the same Mexico that lost 2-0 in a friendly to Denmark and barely beat Scotland at home.

Plus my comment was more about how the ex-champs lost the first game not about comparing the two teams, although that Senegal team was good and came in with good form to the tourney

Actual match not similar at all, I can't stand France since that game, it was one of the worst games I've seen at wc

So you're proving my point. France wasn't as good as Germany that year and they were not as heavy a favorite

Also forgot to mention that Germany beat Mexico in Confederations Cup with their B team or did we all just suddenly forget all about that?

Don't diminish what they accomplished today. they were not expected to beat Germany. No bloody chance in hell were they expected to win by anyone.

lol I'm in the same boat as you with the Cap fails. I'm going with Munier but that's only because I dont have that other bloke. But honestly my best advice thus far would be to do the opposite of what I'm doing so hope that helps

When Khedira makes your first team, and Mario Gomez is your impact sub - it's not all good. Good thing they are not in a tougher group.

Gomez is a decent Plan B. He's better than anything England have up front aside from Kane. Khedira is 1st choice at Juve nuff said

Doing the analysis on the groups, particularly on England’s half. If Mexico can win there group, Germany will play the winner of Brazil’s group (Brazil) in the last 16. That’s why the odds on Germany have grown massively in the last 5 minutes.
One of the big dogs out at the last 16.
