Uruguay deliver on promise as Russia fail first real test

Russia suffered their heaviest ever World Cup loss just two matches after recording one of their best ever wins in the competition.

Their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay on Monday will surely quell interest in their Fantasy players as they head into a second round match-up with Spain.

Meanwhile, Uruguay finally lived up to their potential after two flat performances in their two opening matches.

URUGUAY 3-0 RUSSIA

TOP SCORING PLAYERS

  • Luis Suarez (£10.5m) – 6 points
  • Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) – 6 points
  • Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Diego Godin (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Martin Caceres (£5.5m) – 6 points
  • Sebastian Coates (£5.0m) – 6 points

It was a disastrous afternoon for Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) owners on Monday as Russia failed their first real test of the World Cup.

Having found the net three times in his opening two fixtures, Cheryshev scored an own-goal and was substituted in the first-half after Igor Smolnikov (£4.5m) was sent off. His score for Gameround 3 was minus one after being the most transferred in player (175,000+ new owners).

Luis Suarez (£10.5m) opened the scoring from a free-kick in the 10th minute, after Rodrigo Bentancur (£5.0m) was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. The Barcelona man fired the set-piece straight into the bottom right-hand corner, thanks to Sergei Ignashevich (£4.5m) clearing Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) out of the wall.

It was Diego Laxalt’s (£5.0m) shot from outside the box which took a huge deflection from Cheryshev on its way into the net. Initirially the Uruguay man was accredited with the goal but later in the half it was confirmed Cheryshev would be given the own-goal.

That came through after Cheryshev had been replaced by Mario Fernandes (£5.0m) in the aftermath of Smolnikov’s sending off. He was shown a second yellow card in the 36th minute for a foul on Laxalt.

Russia offered more threat in the second half although Fernando Muslera (£5.5m) was only forced into one save due to the strong defensive work of Diego Godin (£5.5m).

Uruguay rounded off the scoring late-on with Cavani finally getting his first goal of the tournament, after 12 unsuccessful attempts. Godin’s header from a corner was well-saved by Akinfeev but Cavani was on-hand to knock in the rebound.

Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) did not feature in the match despite starring in both of Russia’s previous wins.

URUGUAY XI (3-5-2): Muslera; Coates, Godin, Caceres; Laxalt, Torreira, Bentancur (De Arrascaeta 63’), Vecino, Nandez (Rodriguez 73’); Suarez, Cavani (Gomez 93’).

RUSSIA XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Kudryashov, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Smolnikov; Gazinskiy (Kuzyaev 46’), Zobnin; Cheryshev (Fernandes 38’), Aleksey Miranchuk (Smolov 60’), Samedov; Dzyuba.

SAUDI ARABIA 2-1 EGYPT

TOP SCORING PLAYERS

  • Essam El-Hadary (£4.5m) – 7 points
  • Salman Al-Faraj (£5.0m) – 7 points
  • Mohamed Salah (£8.5m) – 6 points
  • Abdallah El Said (£6.0m) – 5 points
  • Abdullah Otayf (£5.0m) – 5 points

Owners of Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary (£4.5m) were delighted with an impressive eight-point haul even though his side were defeated by Saudi Arabia. The 45-year-old saved a Fahad Al-Muwallad (£6.5m) penalty in the first-half and also an additional two points for saves.

Meanwhile Mohamed Salah (£8.5m) pulled in six points but could have easily added more to his tally as he missed a sitter in the first half. Having opened the scoring by chipping over the goalkeeper from an Abdallah El Said (£6.0m) pass in the 22nd minute, he was put clean through again moments after and dragged wide.

At the end of the half Egypt conceded two penalties. The first was given away for handball by Ahmed Fathy (£5.0m) but El-Hadary saved Al-Muwallad’s effort.

Shortly after, Ali Gabr (£4.5m) was adjudged to have bundled Al-Muwallad over and this time Salman Al-Faraj (£5.0m) slotted home.

Saudi Arabia were the more exciting side in the second-half and got their deserved winner in stoppage time when Salem Al-Dawsari (£5.0m) lashed home after a flick-on from Abdullah Otayf (£5.0m).

SAUDI ARABIA XI (4-3-2-1): Al-Mosilem; Osama Hawsawi, Al-Burayk, Yasser, M Hawsawi; Al-Faraj, Bahbir (Aseri 65’), Otayf; Al-Mogahwi, Al-Dawsari; Al-Muwallad (Al-Shehri 79’).

EGYPT XI (4-2-3-1): El-Hadary; Abdel Shafy, Hegazy, Gabr, Fathy; Hamed, Elneny; Trezeguet (Kahraba 81’), Said (Warda 45), Salah; Mohsen (Sobhi 64’).

Of course there's a lot to be sorted out yet, but we could have had a half of the world cup made up of Portugal, Russia, Denmark, Croatia, England, Japan, Mexico & Switzerland.

England would have been actual, genuine favourites to reach the final. Then again, I may actually prefer to play Spain over their perennial luckbox neighbours...

Interesting, yeah. The Columbia match is just a few hours before the Belgium/England one. It's possible that it could affect how the teams come out and play.

England have come to the party in way better shape than i expected and have a good chance of going deep but are surely going to get found out eventually.

England have yet to be really tested and it will be interesting to see how they go against Belgium even if it their B team and the last 16 opponents.

Maybe England might even survive to the semis where i think Croatia will knock them out.

Unless Germany top their group and there's a major shock in group E, whoever loses the England - Belguim will have a much easier route to the semi finals, specially if Colombia don't top their group. Senegal/Japan/Colombia followed by winner of Sweden/Mexico-Switzerland.

Wondering how they will approach this.

Both England and Belgium will play to win. Any team looking for so-called easier draws in the next round aren't in the right frame of mind to be at the World Cup.

I don't think that's entirely true. Yes, you have to beat the best teams to win, but It's really advantageous to get an easier draw so that you're not burnt out mentally and physically for the last games.

Like I said, any team thinking like that is in the wrong frame of mind. It's advantage to the so-called underdog team in that case as they know that type of opposition are complacent. They should back themselves to beat anyone or stay at home.I don't think Southgate thinks like that, despite what some supporters think of him.

If we had to win to get the easier route we’d be absolutely going all out to win and dreading the Brazil/France/Uruguay/Spain/Germany nightmare half of the draw. I don’t see the difference, logic says play the second 11 v Belgium to keep could-be important players match ready and sharp, hope for the worst and then have a fresh first 11 for the knockouts either way.

Lots still to play for, but throwing out some ideas here. Thoughts?

    Kane, Kaku, Griez/Costa
    Coutinho, Lingard, Carrasco, Isco, Bentacur/Layun
    Carvajal, Muenier, Trippier, Mojica/Pavard, Sabaly/Sakai
    Muslera, Lloris/Pickford

Interesting we still need to pick players that are likely to be knocked out despite the increased budget. Might not be a bad idea to go with someone like Sakai/Sabaly/Inui just to keep as bench fodder later.

I meant to go with one of those to leave them on the bench in later rounds. If 4 good teams make the semis it will be really difficult to have a team of 15 starters.

Germany will most likely get Brazil in the first round, so its a toss up. I was trying to avoid both, but Coutinho made the squad as there aren't many standout midfield options for France.

2 of each of Brazil and Germany means with one of them losing, you will have to make at least 2 transfers to get rid and then have only 1 more left for other needs. I'm trying to avoid Brazil/Germany as much as possible and then bring the winner in later. With that said, you pointed out that I only have .1 itb, so maybe setting aside some cash is a good idea. cheers and good luck!

So I know it's way too early to make a team for the next round, but what's everyone gonna try to do?

In the knockout rounds, I usually try to get 2 total fodders and a 4.0 GK to maximize my team value on the field. Oddly enough, C. Sanchez is probably coming IN with his lovely 4.4m price tag and the fact he'll at least play. I hope Nigeria progress so I can field Uzoho, and maybe Idowu.

Is this the wrong approach? Will this year be one where maxing on team value up top won't be as important as having a decent bench?

    1. SW6
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 10 months ago

It depends heavily on fixtures and what each side of the draw is like. I think there's a balance to be made in choices between value and coverage in a way that there is not in FPL.
E.g the likes of Quintero, Layun, Cheryschev, Akanji may be tempting to include in a R16 team but too many and suddenly in the QF half your team is out. I think it is the same for premium players too. Eriksen will likely be a poor pick even though he has been good value in the groups. I would also probably avoid having more than 1 player each from Portugal, Uruguay, Brazil, Germany (if they play each other). On the other hand, it looks like Spain may have a good potential path for a couple of rounds. And it becomes tempting to pick someone like Iniesta over a currently performing player like Coutinho or Kroos.

This is exactly why saving WC to QF is the optimal strategy. Picking players like Pavard, Meza and Varela felt clever at the time but those extra rotation risks on top of the usual R3 rotation chaos forced my hand early - I fully expect it to bite in the QF.

      2. Yankee Toffee
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 10 months ago

I made a quick draft above with the round of 8 in mind as I used my WC and BB with this in mind.

I will probably have a squad of 12 or 13 and a couple bench fodder. This has always worked for Euros and WCs in the past.

As the pool of players grows smaller, there will be less and less difference between teams and harder to make up ground. So try and use max cap, BB and WC early imo.

Also because we only have 3 FT in the round of 16, look to get in players from teams who will most likely move on. And avoid difficult matches like Germany vs. Brazil, just like SW6 said. Although with a lack (imo) of standout midfield assets, esp from France and Belgium (despite KDB is too expensive), its hard not to include Coutinho.

      3. SW6
        • 11 Years

Also you have to be prepared to gamble, it is maybe easier in R16 when there are some mismatches but from QF onwards you have to be bold. I remember last World Cup I had 5 or 6 Germans and just 1 Brazil for that semifinal and it was great. I don't think hedging your bets and trying to get 2 or 3 from each team is a good strategy. If you want to really do well you have to take risks and hope they come off.

That's true. I remember a few years back when Spain won the world cup, the leading positions in the fantasy game were those who had gambled on including a large number of Spanish players. Those who had hedged their bets and included a spread of players from different teams were left trailing.

first time playing this game. Whats the strategy for now ?
current situation is BB used, left with max captain.

As such, should i focus on a solid 11 and unusable subs ?
Max captain on semi or final.
Am i doing it correctly ?

I think so. I'm planning on like a 12 or 13 man team. Max captain in the QF (2 days with far more choices in games same as in semi and final)

I’d have 15 useable players, as some of them are bound to be knocked out and 3FT next round isn’t much to tidy up the damage...good chance that those of us without a WC will have a depleted squad for QF and SF, before catching up for the Final.

After yesterday results, Morroco and Iran ties agianst 2 strong teams, do we think today will bring suprises also?
    I would bet on Peru.
Roumers said that maybe Croatia will go without top players (Mandukiz, Rakitic, Versalijko) because of yellow cards. do we thing Iceland can beat them? they beat them already 1-0 in the group qualifications.
Argentina VS Nigeria - anything can happen, you just dont know what u will get from this Argentina side....

Yeah I have absolutely no idea what's gonna happen in Argentina vs Nigeria. The only thing I think is highly likely is it'll be high scoring.

yea, it seems that Iceland will be a low scoring game, Maybe the first 0-0 or that they will get that goal.
What do you think about France? Draw here looks also likley IMO

If you have someone you plan to Captain later in the round you might as well stick it on someone today. I have little faith in Griezmann but he will get it today because I want to put it on Kimmich tomorrow. France play super well and Griezmann gets 8 points or so, great. I can hold.

An obvious hike in penalties this tournament, and controversy everywhere, but do you think VAR is working?

The manner in which VAR has been deployed this World Cup has really surprised me.

I genuinely thought this would be a major tournament too early for the system to give an acceptable account of itself, but I'm relieved that it's been virtually seamless.

The longer term benefits of this (eradication of despicable simulation etc.) will be a great positive for the game and the tension created is really quite engaging.

I'm beginning to think that the frankly laughable deployment during cup matches in England last season (Liverpool v WBA springs to mind) was intentional on the part of the FA/Referee body(?) to whip up public dismissal of the system as to 'take back' control for ref's.

The manner which the 'Ref' in each of the WC matches (excl. IRN-POR) has had the final review and decision has been a real winner.

      High 5 VAR!

    4. SW6
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 10 months ago

My issue is that VAR has worsend refereeing performances; they are relying on it and not making decisions. I think that is poor for the spectacle of the game. I am not sure it is being implemented in the right way; it is not transparent about what is happening or who is making decisions (the ref or the VAR team). That could be seen last night. The ref did not think that was a penalty to Iran, he got the call to check it and probably felt obliged to give a penalty because he had been told to review it. Ok an issue with the ref but his performance is swayed by VAR, again.

I think VAR will be a good addition to football when implemented right. But the World Cup was not the place to test it out. Refs should have been given more chance to gain experience with it and the process should have been more thoroughly improved in domestic leagues and tournaments first

"he got the call to check it and probably felt obliged to give a penalty"

So true... think there may have been a few penalties overturned after review, but has there even been a single case so far of a pen not given after being told to review?

fully agree, it doesn't feel like the ref is in charge still with the VAR refs, if they tell him to check it then he seems to inevitably give a pen

Even in it's infancy, even with the incompetent/ inexperienced refs, it has still managed to get most decisions right. It's clearly the way forward and it's a joke that we won't see it in the PL next season...

It is working there is no argument. Proof is in the pudding. Look how many decisions have been overturned. Meaning they not been screwed over by imbeciles dressed in refs clothing.

VAR is a success . Even if you don't like it no one can say it's not done it's job already

The problem for me is threefold:

      - 1. The spectre of VAR hangs over every marginal decision and you don't know how long play is going to continue before it is stopped to be pulled back for a VAR call.

This means that the passage of play immediately following any appeal is going to be influenced by the psychological impact of the a potential appeal and retrospective decision, and so the way the game is being played is being fundamentally changed by VAR technology.

It is also very frustrating for the neutral, let alone a partisan fan, not to know whether the the passage of play following an appeal is going to count for anything. Eventually we will have a counter-attack resulting in a goal following a dismissed penalty claim, which will be entirely annulled by the original VAR decision, which is all very well if the original appeal turns out to be valid but...

      - 2. VAR is not being used to correct clear mistakes; it is being used to let referees off the hook in marginal decisions, but if the decision is marginal then the players should be given the benefit of the doubt - defenders in penalty cases, attackers in offside situations and handballs leading to goalscoring advantage, any player who is accused of a red card offence. At the moment, VAR is being used to overturn 60:40 decisions one way or another and this simply isn't right. If a player appeals for a penalty and it isn't given, and half of neutral observers think it's a penalty and half don't, but the ref decides based on VAR that there probably is a case, just about, on the balance of probabilities, having seen the incident ten times from ten different angles, then the original decision should stand. It completely undermines the authority of the referee and leads to players appealing all the time which means...

-3. Since VAR is mainly being used to award penalties, this is a free hit for attacking players. Every time they go down in the box they're asking the ref to conduct a VAR review. This puts enormous pressure on the ref because they might not take the opportunity to review something which later turns out to be a clear foul, so the temptation is to review every little thing and in slow motion it's very easy to spot tiny infringements which do not really constitute a foul in a contact sport like football. There is no corollary to this attacking 'free hit' because I do not recall an attacking player being booked for simulation following a VAR review for a penalty claim. There needs to be more fairness in VAR then - the rewards might be greater but so must the risks if players are caught on video review to have been cheating.

      Phew. Sorry!

For what it's worth, I am in favour of VAR in principle, but far too much is being referred. The men upstairs need to be overturning the clear travesties of justice and trying to find fault in marginal decisions.

        I agree completely.

What we want is decisive referees who are corrected by VAR if they miss something or make a completely obvious mistake. Instead Fifa have instructed refs to be less decisive and VAR is then forced into influencing more marginal decisions.

It'd doing exactly what I thought, and posted, that it would. It's just added another layer of controversy and drama. To that end, and because I like the controversy and drama, it's working just fine.

      Two points I will make.

Interesting that folk are blaming the refs for it's shortcomings when it was the fact that refs are cr*p that we wanted it in the first place. There s no magic forest of perfect refs waiting to be called upon. The refs that were cr*p before VAR will continue to be the refs that are cr*p when interpreting VAR.

      Also.

      As I posted last night...VAR PREDICTION...and soon...https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=b2H9-98CjSI

All in all I quite like it

There is going to be much more moaning when the PL season starts with no VAR and wrong decisions are made than there are now in the WC with VAR.

I just wish people would keep an open mind and not be dinosaurs like Alan Shearer. Yes, there are teething problems and at the end of the day humans are still making the ultimate decisions, but it will get better if people and the media let it.

Actually thought Linekar made a superbly articulate response to Shearer last night and Shearer had nothing in response, just a Trumpesque shrug or indifference to anyone holding an opinion other than his own. Pathetic punditry. First time I've actually had any respect for Linekar, he's normally so wooden.

He did. Shearer's piss was still boiling at that stage though so he couldn't even comprehend an alternative, sensible, considered viewpoint.

Linekar is actually I think one of the best pundits the BBC has, he just rarely gets the chance to use it as he's focussing on his presenting duties first and foremost.

VAR is excellent, it's not perfect and there will always be subjectivity in football so two refs can see the same thing and form 2 different opinions. Especially in terms of 'intent' and other less clear cut parts of the game.

What it has done is ensured everyone gets an extra look and things missed at the time, notably obvious ones to tv viewers are seen by the ref.

It'll never be perfect, but it has made everything a lot better.

I think there is an easy solution to most of the issues with the system - give teams two appeals per half, with an appeal returned if successful, very similar to tennis.

I would have it so that if anyone in the team makes a recognised appeal sign then they are automatically entitled to that appeal, and/so if a player fraudulently appeals then they cost their team a potentially valuable review opportunity.

If a team choses not to review, or runs out of reviews and the ref misses a stonewall appeal in their favour, then they cannot complain as appeal management would become a part of the game.

I would love to see this.

Can we pick eliminated players in our squads in McDonalds fantasy in order to "bulk up on a better first XI"

seem to remember you could do this 4 years ago

or will those players simply be off the table come Thursday night

In previous iterations, once teams are eliminated their players disappear from the game.

So if you just want to put out 11/12 strong players then it’s wise to pick the 3/4 cheap players that you will keep until the end. This will allow potential savings of 0.5/1.0m per player, depending on the teams left in the game by the later stages.

Stick with Salah (6pts) or twist for Cueva, Coutinho, Quintero? Currently at a very high OR which makes me kinda want to gamble since I have no ML this year but it feels a little bit light...

    what would you do?

Of your remaining players, see a maximum points of 7, so would only gain little reward.
