The 2017-18 season nostalgia picks:

A number of players made their way into my squad before the game opened, last season’s returns fresh in mind..

Andrew Robertson’s end of season form was painful to observe as a Virgil van Dijk owner. At 6.0 he is ready to take up the Marcos Alonso mantle of most desirable defensive option in my opinion.

Mo Salah. Not out of fear. For the joy of FPL points.

With Danny Rose progressing to the World Cup Semi-Finals, Ben Davies was always going to be my next defensive target. The defender served many of us well at the beginning of last season, with double-digit potential and rotation over the opening fixtures less of a concern, he’s a must for me. I am conscious that I held onto Davies too long last season – this year I have earmarked Ben Mendy as my exit strategy, as and when.

Similarly, for Sergio Aguero, an early World Cup exit promoted him to the top of my summer watchlist, the anticipation of Brazil reaching the latter stages and rendering Gabriel Jesus a late starter seemed too good to be true. Aguero was a player I brought in ‘early’ last season at the moment everybody else switched from Morata to Firmino, GW17. I held him all the way through to GW32 so am familiar with the rotational fear that accompanies waiting for a City team sheet. I don’t know if he will be a long term pick, or if I’ll shift to Aubameyang after a few weeks (one of my preferred choices before the fixtures were released), but he’s nailed into my GW1 squad for sure.

Marko Arnautovic is another player I earmarked for inclusion at the end of last season. He’s just a fun player to own.

Kenedy is the final player in this group. A player I was keen on bringing into my squad last season, but for numerous reasons, never got round to, and watched on enviously as he returned a brace two or three gameweeks later. My squad structure includes two 5.0m midfielders and despite poor opening fixtures, he’s a player I’m keen to rotate in and out of my starting XI.

The desirables:

With Manchester City’s outrageous fixture run GWs 2-7, doubling up on attack seems bordering on essential. Having opted for Sergio Aguero, I am keen to leave a third slot open for manoeuvre after one or two weeks, once the returning KDB and co. are back in the mix. Riyad Mahrez is the player I’ve chosen. He’s a player that I’ve felt inclined to ignore over the past two season’s since his well earned price hike following the title winning season. But his FPL returns for Leicester last season, 16pts more than Sane make him almost irresistible in the City lineup. De Bruyne may well end up being the long term hold (or a double up partner) but for now, Mahrez IN!

Christian Eriksen is my third premium midfielder and it is the disarray at Spurs that draws me to him. With Kane potentially making a late return to the first team post-WC, I’m expecting the goal-thirsty Denmark version of Eriksen to step up to the mark.

My final desirable is Josh King. Early drafts included Zaha in this spot, and there are one or two 6.5 forwards I wouldn’t completely rule out – Wood, Mitrovic. King’s end of season form was mildly reminiscent to that of the previous season. Early sound bites from King about being unhappy played out of position last season lead me to believe he is about to recapture something of that form.

The uncertainties:

James Tomkins was a Free-Hit player I owned for Blank-Gameweek-35 last season. A modest 6-point return betrayed his involvement on the day, Livescore kept me informed of his numerous efforts on goal – so close to being a Free Hit hero! However, with Aaron Wan-Biassaka providing the role of 4.0 budget pick, I do wonder if doubling on Palace defence is a little much…

Cedric Soares was another early pick, a player that has always flattered to deceive in FPL. I am concerned about Mark Hughes ability to muster defensive resolve in his back line, not to mention a tummy bug denting his preseason return, so this 4.5 slot is very much up for grabs.

James McArthur was a non-pick last season thanks to the kindly priced Luka Milivojevic. However his goal scoring heroics did not go unnoticed. The arrival of Kouyate (and potentially RLC) could be a concern with the midfield options available to Hodgson fairly numerous. Helder Costa, Ruben Neves and Tom Cairney are all side steps I’m considering.

The Goal keeper pair is something I’ve toyed with a little. Pre-price releases, Dubravka at 4.5 was pencilled in as a potential set and forget, but with the early fixture run, a 5.0 valuation and the arrival and modest pricing of Portugese legend Rui Patricio at Wolves, my head has been well and truly turned!

Tapping in to Sean Dyche’s backline is something that I’ve been conscious of tinkering with since the game opened. With the defensive options receiving a token 5.0m valuation across the board, I see Joe Hart (assuming he hasn’t been brought in as cover for Lindegard!) as a reasonable budget route into the Burnley backline for the short to medium term – a spell that includes a very enticing opening run of fixtures.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

Yes 100%.....in 12 years I think I’ve wildcarded game week 2 in 10 of them, with the new transfer window I highly doubt that I’ll go past gw2 without doing so again.
As the post says, it’s a team for 2 weeks only. Would expect only maybe Shaw to survive, an that’s doubtful knowing Maureen

    Hi!
Third try. News of the Everton Signings scared me away from Siggy.

I agree with the "Who's go the assist" research on Value and plan on 4 or 5 premium defenders all season. Please don't bother telling me I have spent too much in the back. I plan to spend more, upgrading Wan-Bissaka once I know who to upgrade him too. No rush with the CP opening fixtures. Not feeling good about the Chelsea defense right now. Everton fixures too good to pass up. Want whichever of their forwards is starting while their fixtures last.

    Fabianski - (norris)
    Mendy - Walker - Robertson - Van Aanholt (Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah - Mane - - Richarlison - (Cairney) - (Stephens)
    Aguero - Tosun - Zaha

    0.0 left over.

I have had other commitments steal my time this pre-season, so I'm far less aware of news and definately any template thinking this time. Like, say who is the most secure Everton forward. If any. Not sold on Mane but expect to make changes once the first few weeks are done and Arsenal has great fixtures.

    Thanks in advance!

Looks good if you really believe that defense is where the value is. I'm really unconvinced though. Defense has never been a big source of points in FPL and with the top 6 all possessing insane attacking talent I can't see that many clean sheets except against bottom 5 type teams.

      Good picks otherwise.

i think spending that much on def is fine as long as you have a clear strategy and are fine with ur team structure.

I also think you are limiting urself too much only having players from Liverpool city palace and Everton, you should try and spread the risk a bit maybe king or arnie instead of zaha or Tosun and maybe a change in def to united chelsea or spurs

      1. Dougal McGuire
        • 15 Years

I will add players from the teams you mentioned once I know who from them is going to be playing. I have no faith in any Man U players right now and not sure Chelsea defenders will be as good this season. Spurs have bad fixtures now. But, Arsenal week 3 is good, and we will find out who is playing at Man U soon, so yes, diversity will happen soon.

Attacking wise, why not go with good players with good fixtures?

        Thanks you for your feedback!

I like it, still looks balanced for a team with a strong defense. I'm going for the premium defense this season too, I've spent too much effort failing to chase the points up front in previous seasons, so fancy a change this time round.

    Who to start?
    A) Mendy (Arsenal A)
    - Will most likely concede, but can deliver attacking points.
    - Safer option because more people will have him and City cover def

    B) Hughes (Brighton H)
    - Seems like more "punty" with starting him over Mendy, but he got a really great fixture and can deliver.

    Thoughts?

Thought on this No Salah one please.

    Lloris Hamer
    Robertson Mendy PVA Jonny Peltier
    Sanchez Mane Jota Sessegnon B.Silva
    Kane King Sorloth

Possibly go Aguero for first game with cash left for Kane.

    Thanks

Yeah. Probably change it to aguero for first game or two before the whole Jesus rotation headache kicks in. Then Kane could be a good shout.

Hi guys could do with some help, got my team all set with 2x 4.0 defenders and 1x 4.5 midfielder to save funds. Does anyone know any players that would get playing time in that bracket as I reckon these will be 0 minute type players. Thanks in advance

Pretty happy with this. With all the uncertainty surrounding the early gameweeks, I don't think I mind having a £5.0 defender on the bench:

    Ryan / Button
    Mendy / Robertson / Sakho / Pereira / Wan-Bissaka
    Salah / Mane / B. Silva / Gross / Maddison
    Aguero / King / Kamara

Gross is a gross pick. Have you seen the state of his fixtures?

His last two PL goals were against Spurs and United, I'm not overly worried tbh. He's also at a nice price point where I can hop off either for an Arsenal mid or one of the 6.5s

    DDG

    Cook Mendy Robertson

    Salah Maddison Sanchez Richarlison

    Aguero Mitrovic Arnie

    Subs: Hamer Wan-Biss Stephens Peltier

    GTG?

Everyone has a lot at the back. I'm not sure why. There are lots of great options for cheap that will emerge. 5.5m city, Liv RB etc. Not how I play FPL. I'm gunning from the top.

    Patricio Foster
    Bailly, TAA, Jagielka, AWB, Peltier
Salah, B. Silva, Jota, Cairney, Gunnarsson
    Aguero, Aubameyang, Firmino

jagielka likely to lose his place might just play the first game not much after that.
Also think uve spent too much up top I would swap firmino for mane for team structure.

Maybe Firmino and Jota to Mane and King or something like that
