Our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers have answered some of your questions in time for your Gameweek 2 preparation.

Key subjects topics have been touched on such as transfer strategies, the unexpected impact of returning World Cup stars and Marcos Alonso’s (£6.5m) impressive Gameweek 1 haul.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 2 Question Time:

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

Ben McNair – Australian FPL manager Ben has four finishes inside the top 5,000 so far and is an expert in all things metrics-related.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

Josh and Brandon from Always Cheating Podcast – The brains behind popular American-based FPL podcast ‘Always Cheating’.

QUESTION 1 – FPL GENERAL

Is Gameweek 2 a definite time to save a transfer unless your team is in dire straits? Considering the planning that goes into an initial squad, is saving a transfer wise?

General: “I always plan to save my transfer in GW2 so that I’ll have two free transfers for GW3 which gives so much more flexibility.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a definite time to save though. Already, there are a couple of players that I want to bring in as soon as possible, Mendy and Mane in particular, which may change my plans this week.

“It’s important to keep an eye on the possible price changes this week as well which could prevent you from making the moves you want to make later in the week especially if you’ve got £0.0m in the bank.

“Saving a transfer is wise, but if there is a player you feel is essential, go get him.”

QUESTION 2 – BEN MCNAIR

With players from the latter stages of the World Cup coming back earlier than expected, is an international break Wildcard the most viable option to bring them in or is there a better time to do so?

Ben: “We feared the worst as the Gameweek 1 team sheets were revealed, but those of us who avoided World Cup semi-finalists got off lightly.

“A rare N’Golo Kante goal may have been what hurt our rank most. Harry Kane lacked sharpness and Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard played just 44 minutes between them. Importantly, the players we did choose tended to perform well. In the wake of it all, the only late returner attracting a lot of early transfers is Paul Pogba.

“The short answer to the question is that we need to wait and see. Using free transfers and the odd judicious hit might see us through the reintegration of World Cup semi-finalists. The Wildcard will be there when we need it.

“It’s nice playing the Wildcard in an international break as there tend to be a few more price changes and injuries and – let’s be honest – we get to enjoy the kid-in-a-candy-store experience over what would otherwise be a barren weekend.

“But, I wouldn’t get hung up on it. When you have several fires to put out and the prospective performance of a Wildcard squad looks a lot better than that of your current squad – that’s the time to play it.”

QUESTION THREE – HOLLY SHAND

How quickly do we jump on cheap bandwagons like Pedro, Kante, Jorginho, Neves or Wilson? Is it wise to wait a week or two or get in early and make some money?

Holly: “I would give it at least another week before jumping on the cheap bandwagons.

“Some were involved in very fortunate goals and face tougher opposition in Gameweek 2. Chelsea host Arsenal and Pedro could well lose his place while Wolves travel to Leicester and therefore won’t have home advantage.

“Moves to these low budget players will probably involve a downgrade, so you’ll still be able to afford them at a reasonable price in the next couple of weeks, if it emerges that they are the real deal.

“Holding a free transfer this week gives much greater flexibility further down the line.

“Keep them on the watchlist for now. You’ve built a team for the season, not just for one Gameweek.”

QUESTION FOUR – ALWAYS CHEATING

Do you think it’s too early to look at getting Alonso or Azpilicueta in the team? I read articles that said they wouldn’t get forward as much as least season but that wasn’t what happened in Gameweek 1?

Josh: “I hate to say ‘it’s too soon to say’ but…it’s too soon to say. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.

“The pros: strong upcoming fixtures, Sarri’s Napoli squads were some of the top defensive teams in Serie A, Alonso has great attacking instincts and Azpilicueta has been perhaps *the* preeminent set-and-forget defender for years.

“The cons: Chelsea are still transitioning from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 and the four-at-the-back set-up should, in the long-term, hinder Alonso’s attacking potential.

“The centerback situation is completely unsettled and I don’t expect the team to truly clamp down on defense until it is.

“Also, they were playing Huddersfield, a team with one of the least-potent attacks in the Premier League. Only a week previously, a very similar squad was roundly defeated by Manchester City with Alonso and Azpilicueta not getting forward too much.

“I think the cons outweigh the pros at this point, though if I were going to pick someone in their defense I’d go with Azpilicueta for his consistency, link-up play with Morata, and the fact that he should see more attacking returns as a fullback than he did as a centerback.”

What are people's thoughts on squad value?

Neves looks almost certain to rise in value for example, is it worth jumping aboard?

no only worth jumping on board if you think there will be points as well as price increase

I landed on Helder Costa, very tempting to lump on Neves (WGTA almost persuaded me to switch prior to GW1 kick off), but rather not use a valuable FT to do it..

Neves is card magnet, judging on last season's stats. Know's how to pick a hollywood pass through bodies, and scores belters occasionally, and also on set pieces.

I'd like to see him one more game vs 11 players on the pitch. No point in jumping to Neves right now in my opinion.

      Points over value.

Squad value increases when you have players who are performing well and so become popular.
Rather than worrying about making money just ask yourself if you think Neves will over-perform vs his price and whether he fits in your team.

yeah, last season has instilled a sense of wariness, given I had to use 12 of my first 16 FT between GW1-18 on transferring out an injured or suspended player. saving a FT this GW, even if I don't use 2 next GW feels quite luxurious

if there were no price changes, I'd barely consider it. given it's a move I had pencilled in for GW3, I'm considering it's viability this week, given there could easily be a 0.2 or 0.3 swing by then

I'd probably make the jump if you didn't have anything pressing to do. This weekend will probably be close but after 5-6 gameweeks I would expect Mendy to be comfortably ahead on points.

What are people doing regarding Foster/Fabianski rotation?

Fabs has got the home game this week (Bournemouth), but I'm tempted to keep Foster in (away to Bournemouth). Watford will keep it tight and Burnley are always lacking in attack.

I've stuck with Foster. Watford are more likely to be tested this week defensively but West Ham look all over the place. They played so high, Wilson and King and their wingers have pace... I've convinced myself Fozzy is the better option.

What to do with Sanchez? Picked over Mane so I could downgrade easily, which obviously didn't work out this week. Is Bernado the best city midfield option or is it too early to tell?

Not an official answer, but the easiest way to download YouTube content imo is to use VLC player and open as a network stream.

So the dream team for the week has 541 formation with the lone striker the lowest scorer. I think I’m happy I’ve gone with a 442 formation. I used to always try and pack in an extra premium forward, but don’t think it’s worth it now.

Yeh I expect those will score very well and I have Aguero for now, but it’s choosing whether to go a 3rd striker at 5.5-6.5 or an extra defender at that price. I’ll take the defender unless a cheap forward comes out of nowhere.

anyone know why Mahrez was subbed so early? looked like city’s biggest threat

I think it’s because Man City have 9 midfielders that would walk into the starting line-up of any of the other Premier League teams.

Yeah, he had one shot near the post, and good FK.

I don't know, KDB had to get some minutes, and Mahrez was the casualty. Does that mean he will be dropped, I don't have a clue, I hope not.

To waste time. Arsenal were starting to gel. KdB needed minutes under his belt too.
Wasn't City's biggest threat imo. I'd say Sterling and Mendy on that Left Wing.

    For what its worth

I planned on saving my FT in GW2, but considering what I saw and the inevitable price rise this week

I brought in Mane for Sanchez. Nice downgrade as planned although no the downgrade I was expecting to make.

being able to do this was the reason a kept the flexibility to not trebling up on Liverpool or City Players from the start.

Yeh my hands are tied having treble Liverpool TAA,Salah,Firmino.
I will have to wait until week 3 before I consider Mane.
However I only have 2 City

I had exactly that, so I swapped TAA for Holebas which meant I could bring in Mané for Mahrez...

Considering this now. TAA,Sanchez > Bellerin,Mane in GW3 for free

          Tripling on Salah,Mane and Bobby

      2. RubberDucky
        8 years, 12 days ago

I only have two city (kun and Mendy)

The city midfield is more like a minefield at so im happy to give it more time to see if an how to invest there.

I took out Aguero to accommodate KDB. I knew the risks of his game time GW1 but wanted him long term. So not so bothered he scored zip.

    1) save transfer (grandiose plans for jota and King to Zaha and Fraser after GW2)

    2) bednarek > playing 4.0 def (peltier or Bennett)

    3) gunnarson > playing 4.5 mid (Stephens)

anyone considering 442 with two mid ranking forwards like arnie and zaha.

there’s so many top mids like sterling, kdb, alli etc that might be better value than aguero/auba/kane

Advice - what to do? Hold transfer or bring in City player? Considering KDB or BSilva for either Eriksen or Jota out for BSilva. 2.0 ITB.
    Fabianski, Foster.
    Mendy,van-Bis, Tomkins,van Dijk, Daniels,
    Eriksen, Mane, Jota, Ricarlison, Cairney
    Aguero, Firmino, King.

    Thanks.

I really messed up and thought I left myself .5 to do Luiz -> Mendy for GW2 (seemed logical at the time). Thinking of doing King -> Wilson to free up the funds (-4) Anyone know if he'll still be on penos? Any thoughts appreciated

Wilson may loose pens as he missed. King to Wilson for a hit is way too side ways.

Yep. Sanchez was only ever going to stay in my team 2 weeks then move on to Hazard,Erikson,Pogba,Ramsey which ever one looks the best option from week 3.

I’d keep both of them until wk 3
