The best set-piece takers and targets for FPL Gameweek 2

Fantasy Premier League managers are encouraged to factor the Gameweek 2 set-piece match-ups in their transfer plans in the next few days.

In the first of a new series of Members articles we will assess where set play situations can be exploited each week.

Where this differs from the set-pieces tab is that we have added extra detail on how many of each set-piece has been taken so far, which players have had the most attempts from set-plays in terms of goal efforts, as well as how like teams are to receive or give away free kicks or penalties.

That way, by comparing each team’s overall set-piece data to find any mismatches, individuals expected to benefit from these situations will become clearer.

We ran similar articles during the World Cup and found them to helpful to Fantasy managers, hence why we have decided to bring them to FPL.

Obviously we only have round of data so far so it may difficult to find too many over-arching trends right now, but we’ll be building on this template every week for Members to use when making their transfers or deciding on team selection.

Any differences between the takers here and on the set-pieces tab are purely because that individual is not available in Gameweek 2. For example, Junior Stanislas is an important figure in set-pieces for Bournemouth but will not feature at West Ham through injury, so we have removed him the list of potential takers for this weekend’s match.

Surely Lossl will replace Hamer soon again?

Hamer was widely seen as dreadful by Huddersfield supporters on Twitter, from what I saw.

One of the largest issues was his distribution during the game - he looked very poor in that department.

Would expect Lossl to return this week or next.

      Hamer was abysmal last season.
For me it was a huge shock that Wagner preferred him over Lossl, but I don't think it will take him too long to change his mind.

So the big question for many this Gameweek is will Sergio Aguero start against Huddersfield?

We don't know but I've been looking at last season to try and get some clues, looking at their minutes when both Aguero and Jesus were available.

The only home game Aguero didn't start in this scenario was Stoke City, when he was recovering from his rib injury. He started every other home game when both he and Jesus were available.

    Everton - Aguero 90, Jesus 45
    Liverpool - Aguero 90, Jesus 57
    Crystal Palace - Aguero 90, Jesus 0
    Stoke City - Aguero 0, Jesus 63
    Burnley - Aguero 76, Jesus 14
    Arsenal - Aguero 62, Jesus 28
    Southampton - Aguero 90, Jesus 74
    West Ham - Aguero 85, Jesus 45
    Tottenham - Aguero 58, Jesus 32
    Bournemouth - Aguero 90, Jesus 0
    Chelsea - Aguero 85, Jesus 5

    Total Minutes - Aguero 816, Jesus 363

that's not the big question. More likely Aguero and Jesus will start.

maybe, maybe not. I can't see Aguero being benched. Especially given the result last time. This is a chance to get 2 more points than last season!

there has been some quotes from Pep that they failed to break down deep defences with 5 at the back last year (the case of HUD) and that they have been practicing some new system over the summer just for the matches like this... not sure if we can draw some conclusions from last season setups...

Not sure it’s about rest; I guess it depends on Pep’s idea of the ideal formation to beat Hud. Hell, he could play 1-6-3and still win. FWIW, I think Kun starts alongside Jesus

Last season it was "common knowledge" that he was rotated with Jesus in the league. This was not the case. Aguero missed ten games through injury and was benched for two during recovery from the first knee injury. He was subbed off 8 times though, but on 4 occasions had already scored.

You can never predict a manager like Pep but I think this shows that the idea Aguero is constantly rotated is somewhat exaggerated.

    8. Captain Roberto
      • 6 Years

Pep of course changes formation and personnel a lot, so perhaps he will drop Aguero. But considering he has consistently stated that the Premier league is the most important trophy, far beyond the champions league and the cups, I would expect him to play his trusted and best forward. And since we know what history actually shows im wondering on what basis anyone would say Pep would bench Aguero?

    Van Dijk Walker Tarkowski
    Jota Mane(C) Neves Sanchez
    Firmino Rashford Aguero.

Double Wolves and Rashford + Sanchez is a problem i need to solve now, any thoughts of it?

Emery prefers a 4-1-4-1 for aggressive pressing. thinks the 4-4-2 is for positional control. but with these two fast athletic asstets up front he may try and get them both in. Auba may go out on the right and mix it about with Lacazette through the middle. No one really knows because Emery, id imagine, will be just trying to get his best players on the pitch before trying to be too fancy with systems.

Re the Salah vs Aguero captain thing, it seems like the opinion is split on who will be best (in terms of points) for this week. Surely if that is the case it's best to go for the differential (Aguero)? The way I see it is it's much better than having to pick a differential captain later in the season where the best players are owned and captained by everyone, and you are sacrificing forecast points to try and move up the rankings with a differential/high variance approach.

I also still think if you are going down that route then you have to have an obvious tab or sticky article for people to see. Otherwise you just wont get people going by that rule. I see a lot of RMTs on the posts followed by a Please Post Over Here but how many actually then do?

I've spent almost no time over in that section looking at RMT/G2Gs. But if there were a tab up top i may be tempted to jump in occasionally rather than attempt to remember that link!

Lots do! I agree, see my response on one of your previous comments.

There was no way we could get that implemented in the lead up to the season unfortunately, when we saw how well the RMT articles were doing.

It worked well when there was one near the top of the Community Articles, but having a tab is on the horizon as redirects are obviously not ideal

I appreciate I have repeated my comment when the RMT subject has come up. But no more than Ive seen the comment made to post elsewhere.
It will definitely be a good addition to the page, and once people are used to it being there i think it will be used well.

          Cheers

its world cup lag and squad mates taking their positions. but beyond that only Jose and Pep know the long term thinking. no one on here can say when either will play with any certainty, only that they didn't play and were replaced by fit younger players who had pre-seasons.

Sorry guys but I’m thinking crazy, would anyone take Salah out (have Mane) and bring in Sterling (c) for one week
The rest of my team I’m happy with and then would be hoping Crystal Palace could hold Liverpool to say 2 goals and well, Man City will go crazy
    Too risky?

The risk is not in doing the trade - becasue it may wokrs spectaculalrly and you dont lose value (which was the argument people made 2nd half of last season when trading out Salah)

The risk is you commit to 2 transfers when it is possible you may get another injury or 2 and lastly Slalah may outscore Sterling (MCI has a 0-0 vs HUD last season and Salah/Liv can score any number of goals any game

Thanks, I’m not sure yet, it won’t cost any transfers and if my team stay healthy I’ll be fine, if Sterling scored big I could keep him and just captain Mane in GW3

Just a not on Mendy - his previous injury list is pretty poor: https://www.transfermarkt.com/benjamin-mendy/verletzungen/spieler/157495

Whilst this is never going to stop him being in picked in FPL terms, those more prone to injury can often take longer to recover. So if he does become injured, a speedy recovery might not always happen.

Seen quite a few people’s arguments for captaining Aguero this week as “why have an 11m player if you don’t captain him”

Couldn’t the same argument be made for Salah? I.e. if you captain Aguero over Salah, then what’s the point in having Salah? Damage limitation?

    1. Agger
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

More because Palace have kept 4 clean sheets in their last 5 games.. and Salah is playing away and it will be a tight game..
Whereas Aguero is at home against a team which offers no attacking threat which means it'll be attack Vs defence and could get very messy

      1. Les Bleus
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

        That’s a fair argument!

Honest I nearly made the same comment as you about 15 mins ago.
I don't get the why have a big player without captaining him argument.
You have to be able to be fluid enough and play the options you have to their strengths.
I have both Salah and Aguero but I'm not gna be losing sleep over not captaining one or the other.
I'll pick it based on exactly who i think is best for a given GW.
