A quick look at the “transfers in” column in the Fantasy Premier League game reveals a similar pattern: the top 14 most-bought players of this round all delivered attacking returns in Gameweek 1.

Sergio Aguero (£11.0m), whose 78,000+ purchases make him the 15th most-transferred in FPL asset, is the first player to feature in the list who blanked on the opening weekend.

All ten of the most-bought midfielders ahead of the Gameweek 2 deadline found the back of the net on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, while the seven most-purchased defenders all either provided an assist or scored themselves on the weekend just gone.

This knee-jerk brand of transfer activity is nothing new, of course, and hardly restricted to Gameweek 1. With so many “active” FPL managers involved at this stage of the season, however, the bandwagon effect is often more pronounced in August.

With that in mind, we’ve delved back into the archives to bring you a potted history of the statistical trends between Gameweeks 1 and 2, and ask if we should pay heed to the form players on the opening weekend of the season or resist the FPL faddism and price rises.

We’ll also examine the difference between goals scored and clean sheets recorded across the two Gameweeks.

2017/18

Gameweek 1
31 goals (3.1 per match –  average over the season was 2.68)
8 clean sheets
Gameweek 2
22 goals (2.2 per match)
7 clean sheets

Players who scored in Gameweek 1 = 25
Players who scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2  = 6 (Lukaku, Pogba, Mane, Martial, Rooney, Okazaki)
Players who assisted in Gameweek 1 = 23
Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 4 (Eriksen, Mkhitaryan, Calvert-Lewin, Mahrez)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 3 (Huddersfield Town, Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion)

2016/17

Gameweek 1
28 goals (2.8 per match –  average over the season was 2.8)
2 clean sheets
Gameweek 2
22 goals (2.2 per match)
7 clean sheets

Players who scored in Gameweek 1 = 26
Players who scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2  = 3 (Aguero, Ibrahimovic, Capoue)
Players who assisted in Gameweek 1 = 21
Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 =  1 (Sterling)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 0

2015/16

Gameweek 1
30 goals (3.0 per match –  average over the season was 2.7)
5 clean sheets
Gameweek 2
24 goals (2.4 per match)
7 clean sheets

Players who scored in Gameweek 1 = 27
Players who scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2  = 6 (Mahrez, A. Ayew, Barkley, Gomis, Kompany, Redmond)
Players who assisted in Gameweek 1 = 25
Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 7 (Albrighton, Hoolahan, D. Silva, Kone, Lens, McArthur, Y. Toure)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 3 (Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United)

2014/15

Gameweek 1
26 goals (2.6 per match –  average over the season was 2.57)
4 clean sheets
Gameweek 2
23 goals (2.3 per match)
7 clean sheets

Players who scored in Gameweek 1 = 25
Players who scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2  =  4 (Aguero, Dier, Naismith, Ramsey)
Players who assisted in Gameweek 1 = 20
Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 2 (Fabregas, Sigurdsson)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 =  2 (Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur)

2013/14

Gameweek 1 (11 matches contested)
28 goals (2.55 per match –  average over the season was 2.77)
7 clean sheets
Gameweek 2
17 goals (1.7 per match)
9 clean sheets

Players who scored in Gameweek 1 = 23
Players who scored in both Gameweeks 1 and 2  =  3 (Giroud, Soldado, Sturridge)
Players who assisted in Gameweek 1 = 23
Players who assisted in Gameweeks 1 and 2 = 1 (Aguero)

Teams who kept clean sheets in Gameweeks 1 and 2 =  4 (Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United)

Thoughts

For the five-year period we have analysed, there is a notable drop-off in goals scored from Gameweek 1 to 2.

Although there was one more clean sheet recorded in Gameweek 1 last season than there was in the following round of matches, nine fewer goals were conceded in Gameweek 2.

The clean sheet counts increased from Gameweek 1 to 2 in the previous four seasons, too, with the number of goals conceded dropping.

It is noteworthy that a significant number of players who recorded attacking returns in Gameweek 1 in 2017/18 and 2015/16 carried their form into their subsequent fixtures, while there were fewer FPL assets who scored or assisted in both of the first two Gameweeks of 2016/17 and 2014/15.

The significance here is that these last two seasons both came immediately after major international tournaments – as is the case in 2018/19.

Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas, for example, were the only two players involved in the 2014 World Cup who delivered attacking returns in both of their first two fixtures of the 2014/15 Premier League season.

Disrupted pre-seasons in the summers of 2014 and 2016, like this year, affected Gameweek 1 in the subsequent campaigns and we have yet to see the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs at full strength.

While the form players of Gameweek 1 this season have understandably – and justifiably – attracted Fantasy interest, the portents from previous campaigns suggest that we can’t expect many of them to replicate their opening-day heroics this weekend – particularly with so many variables still to be introduced (remaining World Cup contingent returning, deadline-day transfers now considered for selection etc).

A cautionary note, too, for the new owners of Benjamin Mendy, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wan-Bissaka et al: not one full-back/wing-back has registered attacking returns in both Gameweek 1 and 2 in the past five seasons.

Of course, this is Fantasy football. The much-underestimated component that is pure, unstatistical chaos can make a mockery of our analyses and render this kind of scrutiny an exercise in futility.

The findings above, however, at least provide food for thought for anyone still mulling over a transfer or two ahead of the Gameweek 2 deadline on Saturday morning.

I missed the game and the highlights but when I checked in here and on Twitter in the 24hrs after the City game, the consensus seemed to be that B Silva had a dreadful game and was very lucky to grab any returns. I can’t see any semblance of that opinion on here now. Anyone still think B Silva is a questionable pick?

You mean, KDB’s injury ensures he’s nailed on and therefore a good pick? Fernandinho is pretty nailed on too, for less money ...

Of course, but you take my point, surely. Being nailed on isn’t enough to make them a good pick. They have to be playing well enough to get returns.

Anyway, seems like the “poor game” opinion wasn’t as universal as it appeared on the day.

Yes IMO based on Peps comments and KDB injury he should be settled. Also hes the only MID that can essentially play inside and both wings if need be for them. Peps rotation affects him LEAST

Guardiola said "at the moment, it's bernardo plus 10 others". And that was before the KDB injury.

Not sure why people think he was dreadful tbh. In my opinion, he's about as nailed as you get in that city midfield.

He's a punty pick mainly due to the rotation issues. But then again, so is every City mid/fwd except maybe Sterling & Fernandinho.
Yes, he had an average game against Arsenal but the thing is he still managed to get returns. Going back to the Chelsea game, he was arguably their best player. So I wouldn't call it questionable but a calculated risk with a high ceiling.

Pre-season goals don’t mean very much. I’m just trying to verify what I read, here and elsewhere. Sounds like that opinion wasn’t as widely shared as it seemed at the weekend.

Performance on here is only measured in points scored in the week just gone as I'm sure you know.
I wouldn't own him if he was £9m but at £7.5m I don't mind if he misses a couple of games or gets a few 2 pointers.
He seems to have good potential at his price point and I prefer mids in other teams in the premium bracket so he slots in nicely.

Don't see the issue or the discussion here. He's a 7.5 attacking asset in the best team in the league that has become more nailed due to KDB's injury. He may have done very little against Arsenal, but he still got 8 points.

Mane if you don't have 3 Liverpool already.
Maybe stretch to Sterling if you can find the extra money.
If not then Eriksen should still do well this season or Mahrez if you think he will play often.

Got 3 pool and Sterling is annoyingly just out of reach.

Could get Bilva as part of a move to free up cash for switching Firmino for Auba with a view to getting Mané later. Hard to tell at this point how the Pool and City landscape will look in a month.

I don't know what your team looks like, but could you use it as a transfer to free up cash for an Auba transfer next week?

Those Arsenal fixtures are pretty glorious

If you were to bring in Auba, how much cash would you need to free up?

Definitely don't sell... But why don't buy? He was already the most nailed City forward, for the lowest price, and now KDB is injured! I'd be making KDB --> Bilva in a heartbeat.

      • 11 Years

Pep said he was nailed before the injury to KDB. An ideal short term pick for the first few weeks has now turned into a fantastic long term pick. He'll probably get rested occasionally, as will anyone else, but for that price he's by far the best City attacking player to get.

Salhurst park can be a tough nut to crack i know, but watching the Salah dude cruise through the defensive lines of any team must be known to other managers.also if you predict both games what do you get? I am a owner of both Kun and salah and predict salah to outscore kun by a mile this week my mind is set . could you please explain to me why so many bosses thinking different, thanks in advance and hope everyone will have a great game week. 🙂

Salah quite likely to get 1 goal and or an assist, unlikely to get more than this.

Kun has a decent chance to fill his boots against a really weak Hudd team. When he is hot he is capable of putting 3 or 4 goals in easily

Putting the C on Salah all season will ensure you get all his hauls and all his blanks. Might prove to be better than rolling the dice and picking a C all season, which has the potential for you to miss more hauls overall. Statistically though, putting the C on different players throughout the season, such as Aguero in this match will do you better than not. It doesn't mean that Salah can't outscore Aguero this week, but if this weekends fixtures were played 10 times, the chances are Aguero would outscore Salah 6 or 7 of those times. It's impossible to know if this weekend will be one of the 3 or 4 times Salah does better, so the maths dictates Aguero is the better option.

Well I think the scores will be :
      Palace - Liverpool 1-3
      City - Hud 4-0

I am going with Kun because:
      1. He is the best attacker in City
      2. He is on pens
      3. I have 4 players playing the Palace-Pool game (Robbo Salah Mane Zaha), feels like an extra risk to captain one as well

Tough decision. Mili's appeal comes from the possibility of Zaha getting tripped and Palace getting a peno. Neves hardly has a touch in the oppo box, so you'd be relying on belters from him.
I'd say Mili, I still don't trust Joe Gomez to keep up with Zaha's pace.

Are you going to drop Liverpool assets between weeks 5-8. Very bad run of fixtures. I might lose VVD and Mane then and just keep Salah. Anyone else looking at this?

    1. Rostah

Think I'll be keeping all 3 of Mane, Salah & Robbo. Wouldn't put it past them to get returns in those fixtures & getting them back would probably be a pain. Depends on if there's another player I really want as well.

Most of the Cedric moves will have been to WB to catch the price rise. That's happened now, and no one will draft WB in for Liverpool, so Cedric should be safe.

Don't see why he's being shipped anyway, Southampton got a CS, he was just unfortunate to be taken off early.

You have the ideal scenario C Kun get the points wait for a double price rise then go Kun > Auba 🙂
If it also included a City mid in with 2FT then it's perfect.

I had Auba from the start hoping to escape without Kun for a second week but I doubt it. Either way Auba is good from GW 3 and I got 3 City so not too bothered.

The transfer does actually look like you said, but an Aguero haul would likely accompany price rises, so it would feel really wrong selling off the back of good returns and spurning free money... then again points over pounds and all that

Captaining Mendy doesn't seem totally crazy, but with Agüero in my team maybe he's the more logical choice, thoughts?

Same spot, about the safest time to try Mendy defencewise but Kun just has more upside I think and pep did say Mendy was a bit too gung-ho

How credible is Mendy as a captain pick this week? (Salah and Aguero owner).

I feel like with Mendy you're almost guaranteed 6 points from that game - Aguero has the higher ceiling of course.

Agreed. That’s pulling me towards Mendy is Huds will be camped in their own half with Mendy being able to get forward....a lot.

I think it's relatively safe. I've cpt defenders before and it's stressful. Waiting on a clean sheet is by far the worst but it has worked. Baines comes to mind from a few seasons ago.

Could work as a punt. I'd prefer captaining a mid/ forward player though.

I don’t disagree with this concept. But in recent years, defenders have become midfielders. Man city had 2 goals last week, both assisted by a defender.

Thinking of doing Mata to Maddison. Any other options at 6.5 I should consider?

I think he’ll be the best 6.5 mid this season. Leicester have some great fixtures coming up.

My thinking too. Will probably make the transfer tomorrow evening as no rush with prices.
