Captain Sensible – FPL Gameweek 2

A genuine captaincy conundrum is not something Fantasy Premier League managers have experienced much this calendar year. For the second half of last season (and well before this point, in truth), the common sense – some would say “dullard” – approach was to set the armband on Mohamed Salah and forget as the Egyptian delivered attacking returns at a freakishly consistent rate.

Over 1.5 million FPL managers indeed placed the armband on Salah for Gameweek 1 of this season, more than double the amount of the next-most captained asset, Harry Kane.

Salah duly delivered with a comfortingly familiar eight-point haul in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham United, yet here we are, a week later, considering overlooking the man who racked up a record-breaking 303 points in FPL last season and who scored/assisted a goal in 27 of his 36 league appearances in 2017/18.

In the article below, we first assess the fallout of the Gameweek 2 Captain Poll before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) ratings ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

Well over 12,700 of our site users had voted in our Captain Poll by the time this article was written and as such the results are a decent barometer of what the wider community are thinking with just over 24 hours to go until the Gameweek 2 deadline.

With around 44% of the public vote at the time of writing, Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) heads the list of nominations. Manchester City were mightily impressive in the 2-0 win over Arsenal last Sunday – only Everton had more attempts on goal than the league champions (12) in Gameweek 1 – and next welcome a Huddersfield Town side who shipped three goals at home to Chelsea in their opening fixture.

The Terriers’ 0-0 draw with City at the Etihad in May will still be fresh in FPL bosses’ minds, with David Wagner’s troops limiting the Citizens to two shots on target in the whole 90 minutes and leaving Manchester with what turned out to be an invaluable point in their fight to beat the drop.

The backdrop to that fixture has to be reiterated, though: Pep Guardiola’s side had already wrapped up the league by that point, while Huddersfield were scrapping for their lives at the wrong end of the table. Aguero, indeed, didn’t feature in that match, having been ruled out of City’s run-in after knee surgery.

Aguero blanked last weekend but the 32.5% of FPL managers who own the Argentinean forward would have been looking beyond Gameweek 1 to this run of half-dozen fixtures that City face between now and the end of September – kicking off with the Terriers at home on Sunday afternoon.

Only three of the ten-most captained players of Gameweek 1 actually found the back of the net and all of them feature in the match at Selhurst Park on Monday evening.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), who had garnered 26.5% of the Captain Poll votes at the time of writing, was one of those players.

Salah scored in this fixture last season when Liverpool left south London with a 2-1 victory, as did Sadio Mane (£9.6m), who is the sixth-most backed captain ahead of Gameweek 2 with 2.6% of the nominations.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), who was the only other name to score in the list of the ten most-captained Gameweek 1 players, registered an assist in that win for the Reds at Selhurst Park in 2017/18.

Liverpool and Palace also met in Gameweek 2 last season, albeit at Anfield, in a match that Salah started only on the bench.

Palace only kept four clean sheets at home last season, while Jurgen Klopp’s side registered just five clean sheets on their travels – but as we’ll discuss later, both sides’ defences have made huge strides since the turn of the year.

After his eye-catching, lung-busting performance in Gameweek 1, Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is something of a maverick choice of captain for the 5.8% of voters who have backed the French left-back.

Mendy’s total score of 15 points was the highest of any defender in Gameweek 1 and the former Monaco wing-back has recently overtaken Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the most-bought defender of this round: over 250,000 new FPL managers have acquired Mendy over the last seven days.

Mendy has already matched the total assist count of Fabian Delph and Danilo for last season, both of whom deputised at left-back in the Frenchman’s injury-enforced absence.

Almost 750,000 FPL managers surprisingly handed Harry Kane (£12.5m) the armband in Gameweek 1, with the World Cup Golden Boot winner’s participation at St James’ Park in some doubt before kick-off due to his late return to pre-season training.

Kane subsequently banished fears of a non-appearance in the north-east by playing the whole 90 minutes of Spurs’ 2-1 victory, though was distinctly off the pace and didn’t manage a single shot on target.

However, a home fixture against newly-promoted Fulham, who have real injury problems in the centre of their defence, after another full week of training has persuaded 3.4% of our voters to back Kane to end his August goal drought; the England striker is the fourth-most popular captaincy pick in our poll.

Richarlison (£6.6m) completes the top five, with 3.0% of the votes cast directed his way. The Brazilian opened his Everton account with a brace in the 2-2 draw with Wolves last Saturday and the Toffees now face a Southampton side who have kept just three clean sheets in 17 away league matches.

With Mahrez and Sterling there I think he's going to be out of the team as much or more than he is in it. I would get rid.

surely we learnt last year about city rotation? just because he didnt play the whole game last weekend doesnt mean he isnt an amazing player who scores loads of points in a city midfield that rotates more than my sons spinning top..

What I found owning Sane for a large chunk of last season was yes he was rotated alot and still scored a fair few points...but the constant price drops I had to take made a big difference later in the season

Very nice although assuming you are on a WC, I would pick someone more nailed than Shaw. And what formation do you plan to play? 4-4-2 and rotate the strikers?

Yeah the plan is 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, depending on best fixture from Kenedy, Ings and Jimenez.

Any ideas on someone instead of Shaw? And are those 5.5 strikers nailed?

Not sure on the Chelsea doubleup in defence. If Mourinho hints that Young will start i would get him over Shaw, and downgrade Kepa to a 4.5.

Kun have a higher chance of scoring then Salah this week.
The only reason to pick Salah over Kun is because he is 100 % nailed.

Kun nearly always starts home games. Pep always plays Kun against teams who sit back. e.g.Huddersfield

So Pep made a few small tactical tweaks against Arsenal compared to last season that haven't been spoken about which sort of has quite a high fantasy impact.

Last year Pep regularly played with his full-backs inside and his wingers on the touchline but this weekend he switched it up. He had Mendy available to play over Delph/Zinchenko at left-back and also brought in arguably the best out-and-out winger in the league in Mahrez. Mendy and Walker, the most complete full-backs in the league, provided a dual threat of being able to come inside and also adding width(check their touch maps). This meant that Pep could also use his wide players on the opposite sides and they could cut inside with more freedom compared to last season, hence the left-footed Mahrez on the right and the right-footed Sterling on the left. Both players also posses the ability to play wide and compliment their full-backs and this maybe suggests why Sané hasn't been in contention throughout pre-season.

City's heavy reliance on cutbacks for assists last season( https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DkjnHvsXcAAOW3_.jpg ) and Sané's large assist total from that area of Pep's system suggests that Mendy's two cutbacks against Arsenal are just a sign of things to come(maybe for Walker too?), whilst there will be added goal threat from Sterling given that he is now playing on the left and cutting infield like the goal on Sunday.

The only part of Pep's system he wanted to improve but didn't during the summer was the #6 position that Fernadinho occupies. With the attacking nature of a Pep side a lot of energy and mobility is required with this position to cover large amounts of space and negate counter attacks, as well as the technical ability to suit the heavy possession. Fernandinho is now 33 years old and his alternative, Gündoğan, isn't quite as mobile. Delph is also an option here during the season but against Arsenal Pep used Lapore and Stones as his centre-back partnership, two young defenders who are very aggressive with their positioning and willingness to step out to somewhat negate any fast transitions from Arsenal. They of course used the tactical fouling that is a feature in every top sides game nowadays.

Basically, City are going to be good again. Buy Mendy, buy Sterling.

May be wrong but it felt like Mendy was a lot more attacking then Walker, and Walker was a little more defensive then last season, anyone else think that? Mendy a far better option

        • 12 Years

Mahrez likes to start almost on the byline for attacks and cut inside whilst Sterling generally sits a little more infield, hence the more aggressive positioning of Mendy for providing width. Also Pep worrying about my last point, quick transitions and not upgrading Fernandinho means that Walker generally sacrifices his positioning a bit more and drops into a 'third centre-back' role.

        1. RiskyBusiness

Yeah it did seem like that, I think Walker is probably slighlty more reliable defensively then Mendy too

Playing The Sun game (With 3 transfers before the end of the month), I'm considering transferring Sanchez -> Walker, doubling up with Mendy, and playing 4-4-2 instead of 3-4-3. With City's upcoming fixtures and Walker being nailed on and having decent attacking threat do you think this is a good move?

Like I said above to RiskyBusiness, Walker is definitely taking a more central role than Mendy or at least did for the Arsenal game. The Huddersfield game will give us a better indication of how Pep will go about unlocking deep blocks.

Same with the Community Shield, Mendy was being told to go very far forward almost playing with the LW and Walker was staying in line with the CBs. They shifted the midfield so the space in front of Walker was filled but on the left Mendy was given license to not really worry about what was happening behind him

I do not want to get shouted at for posting it on here so I will tell you to look at the City touchmap in the members area.

The ball is spending a lot more time deep on the right(Stones-Walker side is strong(er) on the ball) before quick transitions to Mendy in a higher area, in fact all of the chances created came from the left and these quick transitions behind Ozil which was something Pep was probably targeting. Walker is certainly playing a 'third centre-back' role but this can change against the weaker opposition.

Great post Parm. So from what you write it seems to me that both Sterling and Mahrez are essential, and neither Sane nor anyone else can offer their threat. I'm looking at a case for having Mendy, Sterling and Mahrez!

        Thoughts?

I like Sterling a lot, even at £11m. I am actually considering moving Mané onto him after the Brighton game in GW3 and I would captain him this week if I had him/could get him.

No individual Man City player is essential, but it may be unwise to have fewer than three of them.
Mendy, Walker, Sterling, Mahrez, Bilva, Aguero etc
Is Aguero still one of the best three Man City choices?

They will definitely vary from game-to-game, he is up against Huddersfield in a 5-3-2 deep block so will change it up, maybe not the players but the roles.

I can see Delph being used a lot, he is definitely an alternative to Fernadinho and he *can* play left-back. What would be interesting is if he replaces Gündoğan and provides a bit more of a *shield* for Fernadinho and allow Walker to be that attacking full-back we all want him to be.

    7. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years

I noticed that change, but I'm not sure Mahrez can play on the left. And even if he does, Sane would be a better option there. So I expect Sterling, who's versatile and can play both sides, to start most games, and the other two to be rotated.

And even though he used inverted wingers in the Arsenal game, his system of traditional wingers on their strong sides was his most successful last season, which he may go back to. If Sane plays on the left, he provides the width, hence Mendy doesn't bomb forward, as seen in the first half of the community shield. That being said, Pep changes formations even mid-game sometimes, so Mendy looks a great pick.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

If Sane starts with Mendy I can see them alternate overlapping with coming inside, fatally discombobulating any opponent!

      2. Parm
        • 12 Years
        5 years, 8 months ago

I think we might be seeing Mahrez in a midfield spot soon, maybe even against Huddersfield in place of Gündoğan. He played their in pre-season so it is definitely something Pep is looking at.

Last season he didn't have Mendy which was a large part of this sort of flexible gameplan, now he can ask his winger/full-backs to play inside/wide and they are very capable. There is a lot more potential combinations for wide areas than there was last season.

    8. SADIO SANÉ
      • 8 Years

Mendy's first assist wasn't a cut-back, he also played as an inverted wing-back for large parts of the game (just like Delph did) - think it will be fluid and will change against different opponents (maybe even '352' against certain teams) - Mendy is not actually nailed yet imo. But yeah, Sterling is a great pick and good chance I'll get him next week

It will be fluid not just for opponents but periods in any given game. Pep basically now has really complete, can play in/out wide players and also Sané as a wide alternative but he is a bit more limited. Mendy & Mahrez will improve City's game and flexibility so much this season.

Great post. However Pep won’t stick with 1 system all year round. He wants unpredictability. I’d expect he’d also play the system last year and Mendy/Walker play as inverted full backs with Sane wide left and Sterling wide right. Mendy also positioned himself as a left centre mid against Arsenal. Sterling could be a great option this year as he is the only right footed winger. Sane, Bilva and Mahrez are all left footed and Pep probably wouldn’t like playing 2 wingers of the same foot

        1. Parm
          • 12 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

This is my point. Last season it seemed as if Pep would be stuck to using his full-backs inside and his winger on the touchline. Now he has the flexibility by having Mendy & Mahrez(along with Walker & Sterling) to switch this up in-game as all four players are functional in both areas. Last season he had Zinchenko/Delph who could ONLY play as an inverted full-back and Sané who ONLY played wide on the left. Major upgrades and way more flexibility. He can use the same players but in completely different roles.

He could play on either wing, it is just that Walker/Mendy will be restricted to only playing infield as Sané hugs the touchline and is more of a 1v1 winger than Sterling/Mahrez.

You make it clear why Pep was patient and so determined to get Mahrez. Never understood why he wanted Sanchez though.

Anyway, I've only gone and done it. Sacrificed a 0.1 price rise by shipping out Bilva. Now my City trio are Mendy, Mahrez and Sterling!

Anyone considering Aguero/4.5m mid to Sterling/4.5m fwd with a switch from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2? Not going to do it this week but might be worthwhile if we start seeing some rotation up top.

Great post... I only have Bilva from City at the minute, so with 2 FT’s i’ll Take a look post Huddersfield & see how best to get in Mendy and either Sterling/Mahrez/Sané/Gundogan for Alexis & either Shaw/Cedric/Coleman depending on how things go

Do you think City’s low block will take advantage of Huddersfield playing 11 behind the ball because if so surely Sané will play wide to format the sentinel approach used by Pep in previous situations? Mendy could overlap of course. What do you think?

        1. Parm
          • 12 Years

Sané starting wouldn't be a shock but I think other than David Silva over Gundogan it will be the same line-up. Mendy now adds the width to the left, Bernardo/David will be floating to occupy the deeper central areas a usual 'inverted full-back' will provide.

Agüero has become a key player with his all-round ability under Pep. He is finally showing the willingness to press and show for the ball in deeper areas which Pep wants from his striker and he will always get chances. He still has that little bit of selfishness we want from an FPL striker and of course penalties are always a factor. I'd be really worried going into this run of games without him.

Cheers Parm! Great post! I also realized that pep told the wingers to cut inside instead staying outside like they did last year and that mendy and walker were now overlapping instead of playing as inverted fullbacks. What I’m not sure about is whether or not they’ll be attacking from the left so much and having mendy play so high. I think that part of the reason they did that was because that was the side ozil was on and he isn’t known for his defensive effort. One reason though they could continue to attack through the left is because walker could move in and then they could have a 3 back.

It’s an unpopular opinion around here saying Jota isn’t cut out for it.

I rate Jota overpriced and only as highly as someone like Van La Parra.

So I read the question similarly to “sell Van La Parra for a 6.5(-4)?” Absolutely.

        Current team:

        GK: Fab/Foster
DEF: Mendy - Bailly - Ward
MID: Salah - Sanchez- Richarlison - Neves - Pedro
        ATK: Firmino - Aguero

        A) Sanchez to Eriksen, Bailly to Robertson, Ward to PVA
        B) Sanchez to Mane, Pedro to Madisson, Ward to TAA
        C) Some combination of the two.

          Bottomed.

The only way I can bring Sterling and Eriksen in is to remove Salah. So...is having Mane and Firmino enough to compensate?

          I have Tomkins and WB.

I didn’t plan on using WB unless called upon from bench, but I think I prefer him to Tomkins as my starter.

Go Tomkins. If Palace score vs Pool it's more likely to be from a set-piece (Tomkins) than from open play with the RB involved

I find it really interesting that Mendy is sitting 3rd in the Captain poll.

I'm not looking to be convinced, as I don't have him but I do see his qualities.
I just can't see a real reason to expect a repeat of GW1.
I think it shows a lot of the chat in here can influence people.
Maybe i'll be proven wrong over the weekend but I cannot see by going for someone whos primary job is to create/score goals.

          Just saying.

It’s more of a he will probably get 6 points and we’re unsure over the other twos point hauls.

Any team can lose a goal though. Then you are back down to a 2 pointer.
I'd definitely be peeking out from behind the couch if Id picked him.

However, I'm going Kun and will be bricking it that he doesn't start haha

          Should I start :
          A) Maddison (vs Wolves at home)
          B) Fraser (vs West ham away)

Can we have an option C of both?

Both are very good options. Wolves look leaky, Maddison was very promising GW 1. Fraser looked excellent and he could be one of the stars of the week again. Surely there's someone worse who you can bench?
