A genuine captaincy conundrum is not something Fantasy Premier League managers have experienced much this calendar year. For the second half of last season (and well before this point, in truth), the common sense – some would say “dullard” – approach was to set the armband on Mohamed Salah and forget as the Egyptian delivered attacking returns at a freakishly consistent rate.

Over 1.5 million FPL managers indeed placed the armband on Salah for Gameweek 1 of this season, more than double the amount of the next-most captained asset, Harry Kane.

Salah duly delivered with a comfortingly familiar eight-point haul in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham United, yet here we are, a week later, considering overlooking the man who racked up a record-breaking 303 points in FPL last season and who scored/assisted a goal in 27 of his 36 league appearances in 2017/18.

In the article below, we first assess the fallout of the Gameweek 2 Captain Poll before analysing the Opta data and Rate My Team (RMT) ratings ahead of the forthcoming deadline on Saturday morning at 11:30 BST.

The Captain Poll

Well over 12,700 of our site users had voted in our Captain Poll by the time this article was written and as such the results are a decent barometer of what the wider community are thinking with just over 24 hours to go until the Gameweek 2 deadline.

With around 44% of the public vote at the time of writing, Sergio Aguero (Β£11.0m) heads the list of nominations. Manchester City were mightily impressive in the 2-0 win over Arsenal last Sunday – only Everton had more attempts on goal than the league champions (12) in Gameweek 1 – and next welcome a Huddersfield Town side who shipped three goals at home to Chelsea in their opening fixture.

The Terriers’ 0-0 draw with City at the Etihad in May will still be fresh in FPL bosses’ minds, with David Wagner’s troops limiting the Citizens to two shots on target in the whole 90 minutes and leaving Manchester with what turned out to be an invaluable point in their fight to beat the drop.

The backdrop to that fixture has to be reiterated, though: Pep Guardiola’s side had already wrapped up the league by that point, while Huddersfield were scrapping for their lives at the wrong end of the table. Aguero, indeed, didn’t feature in that match, having been ruled out of City’s run-in after knee surgery.

Aguero blanked last weekend but the 32.5% of FPL managers who own the Argentinean forward would have been looking beyond Gameweek 1 to this run of half-dozen fixtures that City face between now and the end of September – kicking off with the Terriers at home on Sunday afternoon.

Only three of the ten-most captained players of Gameweek 1 actually found the back of the net and all of them feature in the match at Selhurst Park on Monday evening.

Mohamed Salah (Β£13.0m), who had garnered 26.5% of the Captain Poll votes at the time of writing, was one of those players.

Salah scored in this fixture last season when Liverpool left south London with a 2-1 victory, as did Sadio Mane (Β£9.6m), who is the sixth-most backed captain ahead of Gameweek 2 with 2.6% of the nominations.

Wilfried Zaha (Β£7.0m), who was the only other name to score in the list of the ten most-captained Gameweek 1 players, registered an assist in that win for the Reds at Selhurst Park in 2017/18.

Liverpool and Palace also met in Gameweek 2 last season, albeit at Anfield, in a match that Salah started only on the bench.

Palace only kept four clean sheets at home last season, while Jurgen Klopp’s side registered just five clean sheets on their travels – but as we’ll discuss later, both sides’ defences have made huge strides since the turn of the year.

After his eye-catching, lung-busting performance in Gameweek 1, Benjamin Mendy (Β£6.1m) is something of a maverick choice of captain for the 5.8% of voters who have backed the French left-back.

Mendy’s total score of 15 points was the highest of any defender in Gameweek 1 and the former Monaco wing-back has recently overtaken Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the most-bought defender of this round: over 250,000 new FPL managers have acquired Mendy over the last seven days.

Mendy has already matched the total assist count of Fabian Delph and Danilo for last season, both of whom deputised at left-back in the Frenchman’s injury-enforced absence.

Almost 750,000 FPL managers surprisingly handed Harry Kane (Β£12.5m) the armband in Gameweek 1, with the World Cup Golden Boot winner’s participation at St James’ Park in some doubt before kick-off due to his late return to pre-season training.

Kane subsequently banished fears of a non-appearance in the north-east by playing the whole 90 minutes of Spurs’ 2-1 victory, though was distinctly off the pace and didn’t manage a single shot on target.

However, a home fixture against newly-promoted Fulham, who have real injury problems in the centre of their defence, after another full week of training has persuaded 3.4% of our voters to back Kane to end his August goal drought; the England striker is the fourth-most popular captaincy pick in our poll.

Richarlison (Β£6.6m) completes the top five, with 3.0% of the votes cast directed his way. The Brazilian opened his Everton account with a brace in the 2-2 draw with Wolves last Saturday and the Toffees now face a Southampton side who have kept just three clean sheets in 17 away league matches.

Yeah, I mean these are anytime odds which is most relevant for FPL.

The prices don’t always matter to me, unless there are relative standouts.

It’s nice to see the order bookies rank them* (*other factors are obviously taken into account in their ranking - popularity and amount of bets on certain players dictate odds).

Out of curiosity, would you tell me what you think about this?

I bought Richarlison this week, not chasing last weeks points.... because i know time travel is impossible, but actually because i was close to choosing him pre season, and I think hes gonna hit a good run of form with some great fixtures, looks nailed as the main playmaker/creative talent in a good team.

I was close to choosing him, and his points last week to me signal form. Im probably gonna keep him for months.

was it a bad decision? should i have kept my transfer?

That is a good point though. You haven’t given Mkhi a chance and you’ve immediately switched to a flagged Richarlison.

You didn’t buy Mkhi expecting hauls v City and Chelsea, you surely bought him for fixtures after that.

      3. Hotdogs for Tea
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 10 days ago

        the thing is ...
Mikhi played against the best team in the league, Richarlison played against a promoted team
if Richarlison had played even better, but had been unlucky and not scored ... would you have bought him ?
If Mkhi had scored a goal and played badly .... would you have sold him?
Has much changed since you selected Mikhi over Richarlison ? Is one isolated game a good reason to throw out all your pre-season deliberations ?

If you look at the both players’ stats there was not much between them, except for the goals. Mkhi & Richarlison both had 2 goal attempts, both had very similar number of touches, passes in attacking positions etc. (but Richarlison edged it as would be expected playing Wolves rather than Man City) but Mkhi created 2 chances whereas Richarlison didn’t create any chances whatsoever ...

You decided to pick a player that had two very hard fixtures, then sold him after one game for a player that played a much easier promoted team. Personally I think that is very knee-jerky in the extreme and not worth a transer on the basis you had committed to Mkhi for certain reason that haven't chnaged.

But that is just my opinion and not worth a jot πŸ™‚

Not sure I’d trust Richarlison. I feel his score was slightly flattering last week considering his shot conversion was 100%. Who knows, maybe he has indeed become the most prolific goal machine of all time and will never miss a shot again, but the previous 9 months suggest otherwise.

Eriksen is a good differential captaincy pick though

I really don't think FPL captaincy is about being maverick (although both Rich and Eriksen might score well), it's about following the herd. Salah/Aguero is the safest way to go, or perhaps Kane if you think his August trauma is past him. If you want differentials, look past the captain - in the long term you'll lose out on not picking the/one of the most popular.

        1. MTPockets

Quite possibly. Stats don't compare favourably but only one game so fairly meaningless. 3G/5A from 30 games last season, but in the Championship. Has played for England U20 and Wales so must be alright. On my watchlist now.

I feel like with pep using inverted wingers this season and overlapping full backs this can make Sterling the most nailed on in their attack as he is the only established right footed winger in the squad

    1. Eden Wizard
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 10 days ago

Ridiculous use of "Inverted winger" ....inside forward no need to over complicate.
Jesus & Sterling right footers can rotate LW but, tend to agree Sterling is nailed.

      1. Ask Yourself
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 10 days ago

To a normal person it’s not that ridiculous, is basic football knowledge to know what an inverted winger is which is exactly what pep is using. Doubt Jesus will be used out wide again

        1. Eden Wizard
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 10 days ago

By definition of you saying inverted wingers play narrow, Jesus couldn't play out wide ... so you’ve ruined your own argument there.

They can stay out wide or cut inside depending on the activity of the full back in this instance that I am talking about this is not a argument of definitions

Chelsea v Arsenal will be interesting. The amount of passes Chelsea's back 4 and Jorginho got is ridiculous. They love to hold onto the ball deep.

But Emery likes to press high.

If Chelsea can pass around the press with with Luiz & Jorginho, Hazard will have a ton of space to exploit on the counter.

Interesting. Haven’t got any players in this game so this gives me something to look out for when watching it

I've got Rudiger. I have high hopes for tons of baps from pointless passing around the back πŸ˜‰

Him and Luiz were basically controlling the game at the halfway line! It was kinda cool to see.

But Huddersfield were defending with 11 men deep, so you'd expect more pressure on the CBs against Arsenal. Wouldn't expect Rudiger baps this GW!

Rudiger will score the winner, heard it here first πŸ˜‰

It wasn't pointless!! It was drawing players deep! I love Sarri-ball.

Passing around a press that involves Mkhi and Ozil will be as easy spreading utterly butterly on a cold winters morn.

Good point. You've convinced me to do Sanchez -> Hazard πŸ˜€

I predict a ton of space for Hazard.
I like how Emery press, but limited time together and players like Mkhtarian and Özil up there doing the work doesn't scream ball-winning against the upper-echelon teams.

    Fab

    Mendy Robertson PVA Shaw

    Salah Richarlison Neves

    Kun Zaha Lacazette

    DDG Sess Stephens Peltier

Any changes needed? - thinking I should keep Lacazette now for the upcoming good fixtures from GW3 and save the FT?
